A Hana Kimi challenge fanfic

Written by Miyu, Vampire Princess

AUTHOR'S NOTES: You're probably wondering, "Already?!?!" Yeah, it's still raining ideas over here. At least it's not snow. Told from Nakatsu's point of view. Working up to the lemon here. Bear with me, onegai.

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Hana Kimi or the characters in this story. I am simply borrowing them for my own amusement. I do hope Nakajo-sensei will forgive me.

Part the Fifth - Starting a Fire

"Lunch is served!"

"And if you don't like it, you can drive into town and get your own."

Lunch was served later than planned. My fault I know. But the noodle bowls the girls brought back tasted better than anything I could've whipped up. The fish was wasted and the vegetables beyond hope. The odor of warm noodles and vegetables was enough to make my mouth water.

It made the kitchen smell better too.

"What did you get, Mizuki?"

"Let's see.... There's tempura udon for Nakatsu. Here you go. Chicken udon for me....Hey! Don't touch! More tempura...and California rolls for Julia.... And seafood soba for Sano."

The meal itself held little activity. I caught HER watching me from time to time, but again she remained silent through the meal. There was some small talk about Sano's and Mizuki's wedding plans, but we otherwise kept our mouths full of food.

Until a bowl dropped.

"Julia, you okay?"

"I'm fine. I'm fine. I'll clean this up."

Serves her right for making a mess with her noodles.

At least she can't laugh at me this time.

Yeah, that's right. Laugh it up! As if making fun of me for burning our lunch wasn't bad enough! Oh no. She had to bat those baby blues and be a sarcastic bitch about the poor cleaning job. I'm a cook not a housekeeper! Besides, no one else seemed to mind.

I think....

I did see Mizuki cleaning the range top. Again! I feel badly about that. She said it was no big deal. Maybe to her it wasn't. I hate messing up!

And to top it all off, my own body turned on me. Every glimpse I caught of Julia, every sound of her voice, brought back memories of last night. I wanted to kiss her, feel her fingertips caressing my back. To feel her legs wrap around my waist as I dived into ecstasy. To hear her gasp and moan my name in my ear.

I don't want to admit it, but she looks pretty alluring in a pair of blue jeans and a mock neck shirt. She's cut her hair since I first met her, too. It's not as long, but still shines like gold. Sophisticated but comfortable. It's a good look for her. Especially the blue sweater. It really highlights her attributes...mainly her eyes. Yeah, her eyes.

Damn, if I'm this into what she's wearing, maybe I am gay.

But I'm more interested in seeing her WITHOUT her clothes. That makes me normal. The hard-on I'm trying to hide by crouching by the fireplace also reminds me that I'm all right. In pain, but normal.

I can see her out of the corner of my eye. She's in the kitchen with Mizuki. Much to my surprise, they both volunteered to make dinner. Can she cook?

I'm doubtful, but she'll look good trying.

The sleeves of her shirt are pushed up so she can play in the sink. Her hair is pulled back in a simple ponytail, doubled up so it won't get in her face. Her legs look never-ending long in those jeans. She's not too skinny, but not fat either. And the way she leans over the counter while she and Mizuki laugh at each other...gives me a great view of her--!

"Ouch! Hey!"

"You can stop staring any time, genius."

"Huh? Oh yeah, right."

Sano chuckles. I go back to poking at the fireplace while he pats my shoulder. Then he gets up and walks into the kitchen to check on the girls. He seems pretty supportive -- of Julia and me -- but he's got things on his mind too. A wedding is a big deal. Plus college. I briefly catch the kiss he gives to his fiancee, then I hear laughter.

Her laughter.

I could listen to it forever.

That fireball of determination I had earlier? It dwindles as reality -- the reality as I see it -- settles in. Could it work? Would it work? Does she remember?

When we talk, I just know I'm gonna screw it up. I'm pretty sure about how I feel, but there's still so much I don't know. What's her favorite food? Her favorite color? Her favorite band? It's easy enough to ask, but the right words...they'll never make it out of my mouth. If they even form in my brain.

Will she want to make it work?

It hurts to think about it. Seriously, I'm giving myself a headache. Shit. Guess I should relax before dinner, come up with a plan.

Slumping into a chair near the fireplace, I watch the logs burn. My thoughts turn over in my head one at a time. After a while, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Or rather, I can smell it.

"Dinner's ready!"

The atmosphere at this meal is no different from breakfast and lunch. Well, perhaps more humorous. Mizuki and Julia go back and forth, teasing and joking. Sano even joins in. I get in one or two good lines, mainly directed at Mizuki. One glance tells me Julia is holding her tongue. She wants to defend her friend, even in jest. That's cool.

Our eyes meet briefly as we all burst out laughing. Her eyes widen instantly, as if she's surprised, then she looks away quickly. I can tell one thing for certain with that look. She remembers last night. The light flush of her cheeks confirms it.

The fire's back! With a vengeance! I stuff the last of my rice into my mouth, hoping that I don't die choking on it. Meanwhile I try to keep the dirty thoughts out of my head.

Both of them!

When the meal is over, the girls excuse themselves to the hot tub. Sano and I start to clean up. There's a comment about doing "a better job than afternoon". Sano nods and I hold back the urge to stick out my tongue. There's giggling as they leave the kitchen, and groaning when we realize just how many dishes there are to wash.

"Tonight might be a good time to talk to her," Sano suggests in a hushed tone.

"Maybe."

"Maybe? We're only here one more day...or have you forgotten?"

Umm...yeah. I did.

Shit!

"No time like the present," he says, throwing the wet towel in my face. "You've been complaining you haven't gotten to use the hot tub, and I'm sure I can lure Mizuki away."

He sounds more certain than I'll ever be about this. Taking a deep breath, I simply nod. The water's turned off. The wash sponge is dripping dry.

And I feel like throwing up.

After a change of clothes, I head back downstairs. The fire is still burning in the fireplace. The dishes shine in the dimming light from outside. The sun is setting and the porch lights look like tiny fireflies against the darkening sky. It's a calm atmosphere.

Too bad I'm too nervous to really notice.

Opening the door to the pavilion, I'm blinded by a wisp of steam. It disappears quickly to reveal the four-person hot tub. The water's bubbling invitingly. Sano held true to his promise, too. No Mizuki in sight.

Just Julia.

Her hair's wrapped in a towel. So is the rest of her. I can see part of her bathing suit and my mind suddenly begins to imagine exactly what it looks like under the towel.

The suit. The suit!

She looks up just before untucking the towel around her chest. The blush is more from the warmth of the room than embarrassment. Still, she turns around, pulling the towel apart. Carefully she lowers it, revealing a suit I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams. My lips form a little "o", and for once I'm grateful I can't whistle.

"Why are you just standing there? The water might get cold."

The tease!

Quicker than I plan, I drop my towel, shuck my shirt and move to get into the steamy water. My toes feel like they're burning at first, but I adjust to the temperature in no time. Settling into an opposing corner, I allow the bubbling water to soothe, to calm. Gathering my resolve, I dare a glance at her. Almost immediately we're spouting:

"We need to talk!"

There's a looming silence before we speak in unison again, "You go first." "No, you go first."

Again with the silence, then as one we ask, "Do you remember last night?"

The answer is just as immediate and again in stereo. "Yes!"

Well, that settles that.

The hard part is done.

But what about the rest of it?
