Part the Seventh - Warming Up

Is she kissing me?

It happens quickly, yet in slow motion. I can see her moving towards me. My breath catches, my body stealing in anticipation. I'm held immobile by the look in her eyes. They're a darker blue, I notice.
Portraying a level of need that my body instinctively wants to answer.

Her fingertips touch me first. Caressing the skin on either side of my face. The increased heat from her presence brushes against me before her body. Then I feel her lips and I have to close my eyes, or else
I'll break the spell.

She's kissing me!

Whoever is watching out for me...thank you!

My arms wrap around her. Hands press firmly against her back, I pull her close so that she's crushed against me. She may be able to tell how excited I am from the ferocity, the passion I return in the kiss.

And one other distinct hint.

But if she's bothered, embarrassed or afraid, she doesn't show it.

She presses against me, as close as she can and I can't help but groan.
I can't describe how good it feels to have her in my arms. She fits against me almost perfectly. I'm amazed by the feel of her skin under my hands, her chest crushed against mine.

It would take no effort at all to undo the hooks on the back of her bikini top...I think....

Her lips part slightly on a sigh and I take advantage. It's a daring move for me and the moan I get from her is enough to boost my confidence. Planting one of my hands at the nape of her neck, I force her move to the left, tilting her just enough to kiss her more thoroughly.

The other hand caresses low on her back before moving upward to the back of her bathing suit top. My fingers fumble with the clasp, unsuccessful. Probably a good thing, because I hear the shoji of the pavilion close with a distinct rasp. There's a noise of some sort as someone clears his throat.

"I'm not interrupting, am I?"

Or rather, HER throat.

"Mizuki!"

The kiss is over too soon. Heat rises through my body and I feel the fire go from my forehead downward. And where Julia presses against my chest is an inferno so intense, I'm almost grateful as she moves into a more appropriate standing position. Almost. But as my arms loosen their hold, my body turns cold where she had previously been.

"We were just...."

"Talking. We were just talking." Julia smiles at me, her cheeks heated with embarrassment. I get a reassuring pat on my shoulder as she takes another step back. "How was your walk with Sano?"

Mizuki beams as she responds, "It was fantastic. There are gardens at the top of the hill. A park, too I think." She sighs happily.
"Anyway, I just came in to see if Julia was okay. I felt bad leaving her alone."

"But I'm not alone."

"I see. Do you like the hot tub, Nakatsu?"

"It's comfortable." Stupid! What kind of a response is that? "I might have to get one of these if I go professional in a few years."

"If?" Mizuki sounds surprised. Apparently so is Julia. I look her right in the eye and nod.

"A lot can happen between now and then."

"Well...I just want you to know that Sano and I will be turning in shortly. So...don't destroy the place while we're trying to sleep."

I open my mouth to respond, but the voice isn't mine. "Sleep, huh?
Well, we'll be sure to keep it down...as long as you do."

It's Mizuki's turn to blush. She smiles, waving as she leaves.
"Oyasumi."

"Oyasumi."

As the door closes, another uncomfortable silence fills the room. She looks at me out of the corner of her eye. I return the look.

Then we both break out into laughter.

"Umm...ano.... Would you...like to go inside," I ask uncertainly.
"There's some more...."

"We need to discuss?" Our ability to read each other is too uncanny.

And kind of nerve-wracking.

"Actually I was going to say 'cake in the fridge'," I lie. "But yeah...I suppose there's a lot more to...ah...talk about."

She smiles, nodding. "I'd like that."

We keep to ourselves as we crawl from the hot tub. I allow her to get out first -- purposefully, mind you, -- then go about the business of drying off. Wrapping the towel around my waist, I gather my discarded clothes and turn to leave. She's only a few seconds behind me, allowing me to go out the door first.

What's with the dopey smile, anyway?

It feels good to get inside, coming in through a small hallway that separates the living space from the kitchen. She excuses herself to change. I should do the same. Instead, I remove my wet shorts and put on the jeans and shirt I wore previously. It feels a little weird, not wearing any underwear, but it's not the first time.

As she re-enters the kitchen, I close the refrigerator door, cake in hand. Silently she pulls out two plates and two cups from the cupboard. There's a small smile on her face, causing one to appear on mine. She's changed into a pair of pajama bottoms and a v-neck shirt. Her hair is down, falling in waves of gold behind her.

Damn but she still looks sexy.

After cutting the cake and pouring some milk, we carry our snack into the living area, automatically taking seats across from each other in front of the fireplace. Thankfully, a fire is still burning. I place a few more logs into the pit to make sure it doesn't go out.

"So...."

There we go with the unison bit again!

"So...can I take the kiss to mean...?"

"I already told you I enjoyed last night," she counters, stuffing her mouth full of cake. I nod, taking a bite of my own cake. When she's finished she continues, "You know Mizuki and Sano planned a set up for us, right?"

"Yeah."

"Well...." She stalls by taking too big of a bite and chewing it slowly. "I think they may have something."

"With setting us up?" A chuckle escapes before I can stop it.
"We tried to bite each other's heads off when we first met."

"That's because you were jealous."

"Jealous?" I nearly choke on the milk. "You lied!"

"To help keep Mizuki's identity a secret! It's not my fault you were so clueless."

"You posed as her 'girlfriend'!"

"If you were in my position, trying to help out a friend, wouldn't you have done the same?"

She does have a good point. If I'd known Mizuki's identity then, I would've protected it with my life. "Maybe not EXACTLY the same...but yeah...I guess."

"I have to admit that I didn't like you when I first met you," she says, blushing. "You were trying to stop Mizuki from following her dream." She pauses, sighing. "I'm sorry things didn't go the way you wanted them."

I can't look at her when I answer, "So am I." But then I smile.
"I didn't like you for the same reason. You know, coming between Mizuki and me. The best guy won, though. Mizuki got what she wanted.
Honestly...it's great that it worked out the way it did." I finally look up at her. "I got to keep both of my best friends.... And make a new friend in the process."

I see her eyes widen. So does my smile. There's a moment of silence as we pick at the last of our snack.

"So...do you think...we could make things work? If we started dating, that is."

"Tough call," I reply. "I've never had a long distance relationship before."

"Me, either."

"I might suck at it." Actually, I'm CONVINCED I'd suck at it.

"Maybe...we should just work on the friends thing first."

"Yeah. Speaking of which...."

Her mouth is full of cake when she replies, "Hmm?"

"How about we take a hike up to that garden tomorrow? Maybe take a packed lunch or something?"

She seems genuinely surprised -- and pleased -- by the offer. "Like a date?"

I shrug, trying to be nonchalant, but the smile on my face gives me away. "Yeah."

It was settled. We talk about the picnic lunch and what to tell our friends if they ask. I have to laugh at her when she comments, "We tell them the truth.... And blame them if things don't work out."

I couldn't have agreed more.

We leave our dishes in the sink and decide it's time to turn in. Like a scared teenager on his first date, I walk Julia up the stairs to her room. Our clothes stay on this time, but I do manage to give her one hell of a kiss before wishing her a good night. The silly smile on her face makes my pride swell like a wet sponge.

"Oyasumi nasai."

Her blushing smile is the last thing I see before she closes her door.

And the last thing on my mind as I drift off to sleep in my bed.

Things are beginning to solidify in my head. My emotions seem clearer than they ever were before. I'm determined to get to know her better if nothing else. At least we could be good friends. She does tend to grow on someone after a while.

But I'm afraid that a part of me has already fallen in love with her.
