There was a time, Mina, thought when she would have gladly denied her family ties, ignored their very existence. Moreover, she had every time she ran away, left them for several weeks until her temper had cooled off, and then came home to hugs and kisses. That all changed however the night the horde had come. Evil men dressed in black and masked, they had tortured and killed her family, everyone. Gone. Just like that in the span of a few short but oh so long hours her world had been destroyed. The terrible memories of that night bucked in the back of her mind, trying to take over. As she lay in the grass looking through her front sight, at the horde of evil bastards, as they gathered in the clearing below. It had taken two long years but she was finally ready. She watched as they popped out of nowhere magically. Well magic would not save them this night; the dark thought covered her in cold numbness. She waited the wind almost dead giving her the best chance for a clean shot.
Breathing deeply she adjusted her rifle and took aim. They wouldn’t even be able to hear the shot from this distance, shaking slightly she put her finger on the trigger. Could she really do this, take their lives so easily? They may not even be the ones who attacked her. The image of her eight year old niece’s bloody and tear streaked face came to mind, and Mina squeezed the trigger. A man dropped with every shot, she watched as they turned this way and that. Trying to find where the attack was coming from, some disappeared others drew their stupid sticks, as if that was going to do them any good. Within minutes the men had all disappeared, leaving the bodies of the nine men Mina had killed.
Pulling back Mina began methodically disassembling her rifle setting it in its case and cleaning up her spent shells. Throwing the case into her bag she jumped down from her tree top perch and started a swift jog through the woods. It took a little over forty minutes to reach the edge of the woods and ten more to get to the run down building Mina was working out of. Putting her bag down on the only chair in the place, a rickety old wheelie desk chair, she pulled off her hood and let down her white hair from its bun. It fell down her back to just below her shoulders and pulled back the top half with a clip that had been left on an old three legged table that had been pushed up against the wall for stability. She pulled out several maps crossing off the clearing she had just come from. Having just ambushed them she didn’t expect them to come back again. The bags under Mina’s eyes appeared as deep bruises almost over shadowing her near clear green eyes. Flipping through the maps and notes she had made Mina picked her next location with careful consideration, she would only get one more easy ambush, and then they would figure out that their meeting places had been marked, if they were smart that is.
Sighing deeply Mina stretched her aching muscles. And picked her next point of attack, another clearing this one on the opposite side of the forest. A dangerous place she knew but one that would allow her to exact the most damage possible. Rolling up the papers and placing them into their carrying container Mina slowly packed up her ‘war room’ leaving everything packed in one corner. She walked over and dropped onto the couple of blankets that she turned into a pathetic make shift bed. Unable to settler her mind after the events of the night Mina picked up her note pad and began to write.
Morning came quickly and found Mina bustling down the main street towards the street vendors. She made several stops picking up food and supplies along her way. It took most of the morning to make her way down the street to Dizzy’s table. Dizzy is a small older woman with dark skin and deep brown eyes and probably the only person Mina trusted. Setting down the large pack she had been carrying on her back, just behind the table Mina waited for Dizzy to finish with her current customer. A tall boy with unruly dark hair, glasses and bright green eyes, but what Mina noticed above all was a scar he carried on his forehead just above his left eye. Beside him was a timid looking girl with frizzy brown hair who’s eyes shot back and forth around the street, and a slender red head who stood just back from them. Though she never turned Mina new the girl had noticed her attention and was assessing her. Tugging her hood further forward so it would cover her face Mina smirked. The smallest of the three seemed to be the one to look out for, though Mina put no stock in appearances given she herself was a world class shot though no one ever believe so without being shown.
The boy chose quickly and left, to his friend’s relief. Dizzy turned and smiled ear to ear “Mina!” she whispered, “I’ve sold almost all your paintings. Please tell me you have more.” She begged quietly. Mina nodded and opened the pack showing Dizzy the art inside. “I’m going out of town for a few days maybe a week or so. This should be enough for now, I take it you have some quid for me?” Mina asked softly waiting patiently for Dizzy to look through the paintings. “oh yes, yes.” Dizzy moved back over to her lock box and opened it pulling out a bundle of cash, and handing it to Mina. Everyone seems to love your work!” she gushed “lucky me” mina responded without enthusiasm. Picking up the now empty bag Mina tossed it over her shoulder with the rest of her stuff and turned to leave. “wait, a week or so you say? Be careful ok, I want you back in one piece.” Dizzy looked almost motherly as she spoke, unable to speak passed the grief and longing for her own mother Mina nodded.
The walk through the wood would take a day and a half but it was faster than if she went around. Mina kept up a good pace for most of the day and stopped only once for food and water. Mina stopped at sunset and made ‘camp’ which consisted of her setting down her packs and leaning against them while she wrote in her note book. Not long after she stopped she heard a sudden crack, one she knew all to well. Yelling and screaming soon echoed around her. Setting her note book down, she quietly moved towards the noise. Three men had popped in not far from her two wore those hideous black costumes and the third was a young man with sandy colored hair, he was covered in blood and screaming though no one was touching him. “Filthy blood traitor! How dare you!” one screamed the other stood silently watching.
Mina reached for her hand gun, the one holstered at her lower back. As she touch the cold metal she thought about whether she should intervene or not this was a fight between two magic users. Or rather it was the torture of one by another magic user. ‘if I walk away and do nothing then I’m no better than them.’ The though hit her hard and Mina drew her gun reaching for the silencer in her boot she attached it and shifted for a better view. Targeting the screaming bastard first Mina aimed for the head, she would have to do this fast or risk a fight she couldn’t hope to win. Breathing deeply she took her first shot and dropped the tagget, leveling the second shot she squeezed the tigger and hit him. Waiting Mina held her gun ready, after a few minutes she slowly made her way towards the man who was now struggling to breath. Kneeling down beside him Mina was bombarded with images of her own family laying dead across their living room as the flames of the fire drew closer.
“are you alright? There dead now.” Mina told him, the man rolled over covering his face coughing. “my son, my son” he cried, his face covered in blood and tears held barely contained rage. A rage Mina new all too well. “did they take your son?” she asked unsure of what to do, the man spoke only in broken sentences and never to her directly. His mind it seemed had been destroyed, Mina sat with him through the night trying to clean and bandage his wounds. Just before dawn Mina woke from her light dose to a very small pop, she had her gun drawn in record time. Aimed at a creature unlike any she had ever seen before. It wore a dish cloth tied around its waist and another around its chest, the creature stopped when it saw Mina. Looking back and forth from Mina to the man, “master, master! Mistress sent Nessa to find master. Mistress is worried.” The creature tried to wake the man, it didn’t work. His crying and babbling had slowly died over the course of the night till he wouldn’t speak at all.
The creature, Nessa cried silently for her master. Mina turned away unable to bare witness to the scene. Putting her gun away Mina stood stretching her back, and walked over towards her pack. As she stepped by the man he grabbed her knee causing her to stumble and fall. “Help. You’ll help….revenge, pay. They must pay!” he babbled loudly holding her leg. As he began to rise to his knees Mina kicked out with her free leg catching the man in the jaw, unfazed by the blow he held her tighter. “Nessa, Nessa” the creature scurried over at his summons, looking fearfully towards Mina. “You’ll help say!” he demanded twice, Mina took a breath trying to calm herself down. “Yes, they will pay. I promise for you and my family.” Her voice was like ice but seemed to calm him. “no, not me….Cedric….my son.” Tears flowed down his dirty face. Reaching down he pulled out a small knife from Mina’s boot, and drew it across it the arm that held Mina’s leg. Mina watch worried as he covered one finger in blood and then placed the knife against her leg making a small shallow cut as Mina tried to hit and kick hit. Tossing the knife down he caught Mina’s right hand and drew a circle of there mixed blood on it.
“Nessa will aid and obey you until Cedric revenge is complete and the dark lord is dead.” He spoke with an odd deep and resonating feel. Nessa gasped and the man finally let go, sitting back he mumbled something unintelligible and went quiet again. Mina hurriedly scrambled away from the two feeling an odd tingle in her gut. &nb sp;
