Vernon started referring to his mum as “Virginia” after she abandoned their family.  That was her Christian name, after all, even if there was nothing Christ-like in her action. 

The Saturday she exited the house for the last time started out normally enough.  She had made breakfast, put on a load of wash, got dressed.  He saw her tuck a grocery list into her clutch.  As she turned to say goodbye to him, a tremor ran down her slim throat.

While he understood her need to escape his dad, he never forgave her absence. Where was his escape, his sanctuary?
