Chapter 1- Owl Post and an Unusual Place
It was dark and cold in the almost dungeon-like room in the basement of the stone fortress perched on a stone island in the middle of the stormy sea. Raven sat on the damp floor of ark room in the Orphanage of Azkaban.
The orphanage sat on an island less than a kilometer from Azkaban Prison and was guarded by the same creatures, Dementors, cold, cruel beings that feed off of positive emotions. A person could go mad in their presence within weeks. Raven had been in the orphanage for thirteen years and she had little hope of ever being released. It was said that if you were not released from the orphanage by age eighteen you would be put in the prison and would eventually receive the Dementor's Kiss.
She sat alone in this dark room. It was her punishment for being outspoken. She had been put in the room six years before and never let out.
Long ago she had given up hope of anyone even remembering that she existed, let alone anyone releasing her, when through the small hole in the door to the dark room, through which food was usually pushed, came a letter written in emerald green ink on thick yellowing parchment. The envelope was of the same parchment and was sealed with a stamp of a large H. Raven was curious as to who would write her and why now? She looked at the address on the letter.

Miss Raven
The Dungeon
Orphanage of Azkaban
The Sea

There was no return address on the envelope. She tore open her letter cautiously, but excitedly. The first page of parchment she found was a letter, reading:

The next page was another letter that read:

Raven read over her letter over and over, not believing that this was real. She couldn't believe it. She had been accepted into one of the best magic schools in the world. A sudden sound broke her from her amazed thoughts. This was a sound she'd not heard in many years. It was the sound of the door to the dark room opening. A little dim light filtered in around the figure of a cloaked woman. She was clearly a strict woman. Her hair was pulled back into a tight bun and a pair of glasses sat on her face. Her eyes were fierce and Raven knew this was not a woman who should be upset.
Raven looked up at the woman clad in emerald robes and then looked down at her own clothes, a dirty tattered dress with several holes, tears and stains.
"Raven?" Professor McGonagall said.
Raven nodded timidly. Professor McGonagall motioned for her to follow and Raven stood. She followed Professor McGonagall into the dimly lit hall and the professor realized how poorly kept Raven was.
Raven was clearly malnourished and her long dark hair was matted and unkempt. Her dress was tattered and she looked like she hadn't had a bath in years. She guided the young girl past the Dementors and out of the orphanage. A small carriage pulled by nothing waited outside. Professor McGonagall climbed in, followed by Raven and the carriage took off flying toward the distant Black Lake.
Raven watched out the window of the strange magical carriage as they smoothly flew over the glassy black waters of the sea. The sky was dark with rain clouds and the air was thick with the smell of rain. Her head was spinning with questions and she didn't know which she should ask first.
"Ma'am?" Raven said timidly. "Ma'am, I don't wish to be rude, but who are you?"
Professor McGonagall gave Raven a rare smile. "I am Professor Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress and teacher of Transfiguration at Hogwarts. I am also head of Gryffindor House."
"Oh," Raven said, "And where are we going?"
"We are going to Daigon Alley to purchase your school things."
Raven tilted her head. How was she going to buy all this? She had never even held so much as a Knut, let alone enough to even pay for a wand.
"The Ministry has given you a vault with enough money to pay for everything you'll need for school," Professor McGonagall said, as if she had read Raven's mind.
The carriage came to a stop and the two got out into an area surrounded by brick walls. Against one of the walls sat a trash bin made of rusted old metal. Professor McGonagall approached the trash bin and tapped the third brick up from the trash bin three times with her wand. Almost instantly, the bricks began to shift and move. They formed into an arched doorway that lead to a crowded cobblestone street lined with shops, stores and cafes.
“What is this place?’ Raven asked.
“This is Daigon Alley.”
