Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter and make no money from the writhing of this fanfic. If I did, the entire story would focus on the marauders era instead of pansy-ass Harry and his “friends”.
Summary: Sirius passes through the veil to find James waiting for him on the other side. Together, they wait to welcome the treacherous Marauder, Peter Pettigrew. Mwaaaahahahahahha!!! Peter gets what's coming to him…or rather what's waiting for him…
Sirius passed through the veil, the look of mingled fear and surprise still etched on his wasted, once-handsome face.
As soon as he regained his balance, he rushed back towards it. “Why that conniving, good-for-nothing slut!! I'll show her….”
Till he collided with something that felt like glass. He was understandably enraged.
“WHAT?? Why can't I…” Then it dawned on him. “The veil! Dammit! I'm dead!”
“Brilliant observation, mate” Drawled a voice from behind him.” Sirius turned around so fast he crincked his neck. “Ow! Who- James!”
He froze for a moment, staring at his long lost best friend. Then he launched himself at James who was grinning like a maniac. The two old friends embraced tightly, as if to make up for all the lost time. Then James held Sirius at arms length and looked him up and down. “You look like hell.”
Sirius tried to scowl but couldn't quite manage it because a grin kept breaking out. “Well you look smashin' as ever, mate.'
James smiled arrogantly. “Well of course…what'd you expect? I live in heaven.”
Sirius looked back at the veil with concern. “But Harry-?”
James smiled. “Don't worry about him. He'll be fine.”
Sirius shook his head. Then he looked around. It felt like they were standing in midair and there were, what appeared to be big billowing white clouds all around them. He turned to James.
“Is this-?”
“Heaven?” James snorted. “Of course not. This is…how should I put this? It's like an in between station. Kinda like kingcross.”
Sirius nodded. “So have you been waiting here all this while for me?”
James snorted again. “Are you outta your mind? Spending years here doing what? Staring at the damn clouds? No, I and Lily went straight to heaven. I heard about the fight at the ministry so I came to watch.”
Sirius shook his head. “You came to the border between the Two Worlds to watch a fight. Why am I not surprised?”
Then something else occurred to him and he frowned. “Wait a minute. You heard about the fight at the ministry? From whom? Angels?”
James nodded. “Yup. I've made friends with a lot of `em. But some don't really seem to like me all that much; can't imagine why.”
Sirius gave him an all-too-knowing look. “I can imagine why. You jinxed their robes purple, didn't you?”
James looked horrified. “WHAT? Me? Jinx an angel's robes purple? Why would I do such a thing?? Sirius, how could you even think something like that?”
Sirius didn't appear to be buying it. James conceded. “Yeah I turned them green.”
Sirius nodded sagely. “Puke green?”
James grinned and messed up his hair. “Heehe well you could say that…”
Sirius sighed. “We'll discuss that later…now, can we go? I can't wait to see heaven and Lily.”
James grinned an impish grin that had made many a Hogwarts professor's hair stand on end.
“Well actually, I thought we'd wait here for our old pal Peter…”
Sirius's grin was positively malicious. “Shit, I'd love that but I can't see Peter going to heaven so there's not much chance of us meeting him, is there?”
James was still grinning. “Actually, I…arranged things so Peter will have to pass through us first on his way to hell…”
Sirius narrowed his eyes. “You arranged things…?”
James waved his hand. “I'll tell you all about it later. First, we have a…guest…to deal with…so, the plan…”
…
While James and Sirius caught up on the time lost, Peter was coming closer and closer to dying and as he became more and more steeped in sin, he tried his utmost not to think about death. Time passed and when Peter finally died, choked by the silver hand, he was pretty depressed, to say the least.
Now, it's more or less normal for someone who's dying to be depressed, but for Peter, it was worse because he knew he was going to hell and to make a bad situation worse, he hadn't even really enjoyed the sins he had committed to get a pass into hell in the first place. Most of his life was spent in trying not to die and now that he was dead, he had nothing much to look forward to except eternity in hell. Joy!
As he died and crossed the border between the worlds, Peter, shoulders slumping, prepared to go wherever one went after crossing over. Until-
“Wormtail, mate! How simple splendid to see you!!”
Peter froze. His mind went completely blank except for the thought ohopleasepleasepleasepleaseno!
That voice…it couldn't be! Please let that be the Devil…Please let that be the Devil, he prayed
Trembling, he slowly turned around. His face paled and his life flashed before his eyes in a way it never had when he was actually dying. James!
He laughed nervously and rather shakily. “James! H-how nice to see you…after such a long time!”
Perhaps dead people didn't know what killed them? He thought hopefully and a little desperately.
“If it isn't our favorite treacherous rat!” said another voice from behind James and Peter paled further, all hope flying out of the proverbial window. Sirius! Oh shit I am so dead! No wait, that I am. Oh shit, I am so screwed!
James and Sirius were idly playing with their wands smiling lazily at him and he knew from his experience as a marauder that when the legendary duo were so casually happy, with wands in their hands, it was never a very good thing for somebody and in this case, that unfortunate somebody was him.
He laughed nervously and backed away but really, there was no way to go. “Wh-What are you guys doing here?”
James gave him a brilliant smile, which if he didn't know the man better, he would have taken as warm. “Why we were waiting for you, of course! What else?”
“He-hehe y-you really didn't have to do that, you know.”
James smile widened and Peter's heart skipped a beat. Why was the damned thing beating anyway? Wasn't he supposed to be dead?
“After all you did for us- me, Lily, Sirius, everyone- how could we let you go unwelcome, mate? We'll repay you…”
James held Peter's gaze and whispered the last word. “…tenfold.”
Peter gulped. “Tenfold? You'll repay me tenfold? You-I - I mean you really don't have to do that. I mean if only you knew how sorry I am, James. I'm so sorry! I- I had to! The Dark Lord forced me to! I had no choice-“
His stuttering ground to a sudden halt as James pointed his wand lazily at his chest. “Spare us the theatrics, wormy. Even a buffoon wouldn't fall for that bullshit; much less twice.”
Peter closed his mouth and thought desperately, trying to find some way out of the situation.
“Why- How are you guys here anyway? Aren't you supposed to be in heaven and me in hell?” he asked hopefully.
“Oh you will be.” Replied James absently. Peter felt a sudden hope. “After we're done with you.” Cue enter sinking feeling, stage right.
“What do you mean after you're done with me? You can't delay the proceedings of the Other World!”
“I can, actually.” James told him. “I had a talk with the Devil.”
For Peter, the situation had started to border on the surreal. “You had a talk with the Devil??”
“Yup. I told him about your…actions during your life and how we dearly wished to repay you for them. He also saw our biodata and saw that we are more than capable of doing so, so he agreed.”
Peter frowned. “That's it? He just, you know, agreed? You didn't have to give him anything in return?”
James waved his hand. “Yeah, we had to promise to torture you.” Peter's upper lip wobbled. “T-torture me? He allowed you to break some major rules just so you could torture me??”
James blinked. “Well of course. He's the Devil, after all.”
Hn. That was true. But still-!
“Al-alright. So what do you plan to do to me?”
James and Sirius looked at each other, disturbingly identical grins on their face. “We'll make you experience the one thing you're most afraid of in the whole world…worlds…whatever.”
Peter almost sighed in relief. Oh good. It can't be that bad. They have no clue whatsoever what I'm afraid of.
James pointed his wand at him and Peter found his legs bound together at the ankles, hanging upside down, robes falling over his face. His eyes widened in recognition. Snape, this is what we- they did to Snape! Well thank god I'm wearing clothes underneath the robes, unlike Snivellus who was wearing just underwe- aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!
As he felt the cool breeze on his legs, he realized that James had jinxed his clothes away. He was now, just as naked and ugly as Snivellus had been that day, so many years ago. Well at least he didn't have the whole school watching-
“So who wants to see me take off Wormy's pants?” called James and as the clouds cleared, Peter felt the burning humiliation of hanging upside down in his underwear in front of the entire dead wizarding population, that was looking quite amused.
Eyes wide in horror, he turned to look at Sirius who was watching the show contentedly. “The thing you're most afraid of, Peter. Humiliation…being alone without a powerful protector. There is no one here to save you today, Petey. Not Snake-face, not Lupin, not Harry.”
“Peter's mind was going curiously blank as the extent of his humiliation hit him. “Why…” he whispered. “Why didn't you just send me to hell?”
Sirius laughed a cruel laugh. “Because, Wormtail, haven't you heard? Hell hath no fury like a betrayed friend…especially us.”
To be continued…will mostly be a two-shot. Review please, even if it's a couple of words. It makes my day. ^_^
