The Arrangements
Emerald eyes stared blankly around the circular room that was Dumbledore’s office, his mind failing to acknowledge the difference between the cold stones and the portraits of previous sleeping headmasters as he tried to process what Ron had told him. He was a girl?
Harry was sure Ron and Hermione had been mistaken, the Metamorphic potion was only supposed to make small simple changes; not something so complicated as a sex change. But as the wizard looked down at himself and saw the clearly visible signs; Harry knew they were right. The very same hospital pyjamas that had been loose fitting on Harry that very morning were now straining against the two large breasts that were barley covered by Harry’s now too small robe.
Suddenly, Harry felt a hand on his shoulder and looking up; he saw Hermione’s concerned eyes gazing at him. She and Ron had refused to leave his side and were now sitting beside him in as they waited for the headmaster to come to a decision. Ron was sitting on Harry’s other side and was amusing him self by examining the office, unlike Hermione; Ron was finding the situation rather amusing. It wasn’t every day after all that your best friend gets turned into a girl. Hermione on the other hand wasn’t amused, she had been growing paler and had also taken to nibbling at her nails; something Harry had never seen her do before.
“Are you okay Harry?” her voice was filled with concern as she gazed at Harry, the potion had also taken a few inches off his origin height so that now they were now around the same height and looking each other eye to eye.
“Yhea, I’m fine Hermione, just a little shock up.” Harry replied, giving her a quick smile before looking back at the portraits on the wall; watching as they slept peacefully in their frames and Harry couldn’t help but wish he was able to disappear into one of the frames and out of this nightmare.
Harry was brought from the depths of his mind however by the sound of some one clearing their throat. Looking up in the direction of the sound, Harry saw professors Dumbledore, Slughorn, McGonagall and Snape looking in his direction, watching him with cautious eyes; as if he was about to have an emotional outburst. Not that Harry could really blame them; it wouldn’t have been the first time his emotions got the better of him
Surprisingly, it wasn’t Dumbledore whose eyes held that same sadness Harry had seen at the end of the last year that spoke first, neither was it Professor McGonagall who was looking more worried than Harry had ever seen her before. In stead, it was the some what nervous looking Professor Slughorn; but whether it was because of his personal involvement in the situation or because of what had happened to his student was any ones guess.
“Well, you see Harry my boy; I’m afraid their really isn’t much we can do for you except wait.” Slughorn said as he looked away from his students before continuing. “The Metamorphic potion normally wares off within hours, but I’m afraid it wasn’t a normal potion you drank Harry; so I’m afraid there is no guarantee it will ware off. And if that’s the case Harry I’m afraid to say there might be nothing we can do for you.” At that, Slughorn quickly moved to the back of the room and away from the wizards gaze.
“But…” Hermione exclaimed, desperation evident in her voice, “but professor there has to be something we can do for Harry. There just has to be…”
“Yhea why doesn’t Harry just drinks the Metamorphic potion again.” Ron quickly suggested. “Harry drank it as a boy and it turned him in a girl, so then it should turn him back into a boy if he drank it as a girl, right?”
“I’m afraid, Mr Weasley that that is just not an option in this case.” Dumbledore answered sadly as he turned to face the trio. “While the theory of your idea is correct, I’m afraid that is just not that simple. Werewolf Fangs have never before been used in a metamorphic potion and so the outcome can not be so easily predicted in Harry’s current state.”
“He saying that just because Harry became a girl when he drank it before doesn’t mean he will change back into a boy if he drinks it now.” Hermione explained as she saw the confused looks on Harry’s and Ron’s faces.
“Quite right Miss Granger, so I’m sorry to say Mr Weasley that the solution won’t be that simple.” Dumbledore said sadly as he looked away from the trio and sat down at his desk. His good hand began rubbing his temples as he placed his other withered black hand on the cool wood; obviously deep in thought but about what Harry couldn’t tell and he could only hope that his headmaster was trying to think of a way to solve his present predicament.
“Um Professor, what’s going to happen to me know?” Harry finally asked after minutes of uneasy silence, worry filling his voice and shining in his olive eyes.
Looking up from his desk, Dumbledore gazed at Harry for several long, agonizing seconds before answering “Well Harry, I am afraid that all depends on tonight. I’m sure that madam Pomfrey won’t object to you staying at the hospital wing and in the morning if you are back to your normal state, I’m sure you would like to join your friends for breakfast and answer the school’s questions on the experience.” At that, the old man gave him a small smile; the whole school would obviously know what had happened to Harry by the morning. Even if the students in his potion’s class hadn’t told everyone they knew about him collapsing, highly unlikely Harry thought; the Slitherin’s always loved a good joke and a laugh at his expense. Then Snape would almost certainly let Harry’s predicament slip at breakfast, even if someone doesn’t ask him about it. At that thought, Harry felt a cold wave of dread wash over him and the very thought of what Malfoy might say made him shiver.
Suddenly Dumbledore’s smile vanished and his eyes turned serious as he woke the wizard from his thoughts. “However Harry, if the potions effects on you have not worn off, then we will have to assume that you will remain as you are until a cure can be found. Now Harry if that is the case, I’m afraid that you would be unable to remain in the boy’s wing of the Gryffindor Common room and so I’m sure professor McGonagall will take care of all the arrangements?” At that the wizards aging eyes quick turned to the woman who was standing beside him.
“Of course professor Dumbledore, I’ll go and inform the house elves that while Potter and Miss Delacour are in Hogsmeade; his possessions are to be moved from the boy’s dormitory to the Girl’s.” the professor replied before turning her gaze back to Harry before she took her leave, sympathy evident in her orbs. Although she didn’t show it much, Professor McGonagall did feel a lot of sympathy towards Harry because of the things he went through and this would be perhaps one of the worst and most challenging trials that could happen to him, it was such a great change and that boy had had enough to deal with in the last few years. Following behind her, Snape also gave Harry one last glance before disappearing back to his dungeon. His cold eyes however had none of the transfiguration teachers warmth, instead Harry saw that his professor found the situation quite comical.
“Um Professor, why would I be going to Hogsmeade tomorrow and why with Fleur?” Harry suddenly asked, confused by his transfiguration teacher’s statement.
“Well Harry, you see if you are to remain as a girl then you will need girl’s clothing, so providing you are still in your current state tomorrow morning you would have to buy some more appropriate clothing then you have now.” Dumbledore said matter-of-factly before continuing “And with Miss Delacour because she has recently become a member of the order and has volunteered to be the one to teach you about being a girl when we sent world requesting a volunteer . She has also requested to be your personal Guard in and around Hogwarts”
All eyes in the room turned to Hermione as she suddenly stood up and asked “Professor Dumbledore! Why should Harry need that ‘woman’ to teach him about being a girl? I’m his best friend surly I would be a more obvious choice.” Her eyes were now gleaming with anger at having been not been thought of for Harry’s aid and maybe even fury at being overtaken by Fleur Delacour.
Surprisingly, the headmaster seemed unfazed by Hermione’s outburst, instead he just watched her with those twinkling eyes that seemed to stair deep into your soul. “Well miss Granger, while undoubtedly we had considered you for the position, however with your N.E.W.Ts so close, I thought that it would be to much pressure on you.”
“But Professor, I can handle it. I’m always teaching and taking care of theses two” Hermione quickly pleaded, gesturing back to Harry and Ron as she finished.
Professor Dumbledore didn’t respond, he only examined the desperate look in the girls eyes before smiling kindly at her and saying “Very well miss Granger, if you really wish to do this then please stay behind as there is something I must speak to you about .” As the headmaster finished, suddenly a deep gong rang through the castle and the eyes of all remaining occupants of the office quickly turned to a small clock that was situated on Dumbledore’s wall. “Ah 9 o’clock, well Harry I think you had better make your way to the hospital wing for bed and then Mr Weasley you may return to Griffindor tower. Uh Horace…” turning his attention to the potions teacher who was at that moment about to enjoy a goblet of the headmaster’s best wine to ’calm his nerves’. “When you have finished your wine, escort these boys down to the hospital wing and explain to poppy please and then would you take Mr Weasley back to his common room.”
Grumbling quietly to himself, Professor Slughorn quickly downed his wine before hurrying the two students. However before leaving, Harry quickly glanced over his shoulder and asked “Um Professor, Neville won’t get in trouble for putting that fang in the potion will he?” Giving the boy a quick smile, Dumbledore replied “No Harry, Neville will not be punished. Even in a situation like this, one cannot be to harshly punished for ones accidents and I believe Mr Longbottom has been punished enough be the thought of what might of happened to you.”
After watching as her two best friends were almost dragged out of the office by their potions teacher, Hermione turned back to the suddenly serious glare of the head master.
“Now Miss Granger, how much do you know about werewolves?”
“Well not much professor, while I have read all about them, we have only been taught about them once, when professor Snape took the defence against the dark arts lesson in third year.” Hermione said nervously. “ Werewolves are supposedly some of the most powerful and dangerous magical creatures known to wizard kind. However it is only when the wizard or witch who has been bitten is in their wolf form that they are truly dangerous. The wolfs saliva acts like a transport system for the virus, after entering the victims body through the wolfs bite it begins infecting human cells; creating a 24th pair of chromosomes. This makes the human host fitter, smarter, stronger and can also heal almost instantly.
“However it is also very unstable and reacts violently to a form of magical energy given off by the moon when it’s whole thus making the wizard turn into his wolf form. They are so dangerous in this form because not only are they much faster and stronger but also the curse gets moved to their fangs and…”
“Exactly Miss Granger” Dumbledore cut in. “The Fangs of a werewolf are the carriers of the virus. You see miss Granger, I fear that when Harry drank the Metamorphic Potion he may have been infected with the werewolf Virus.”
“But Professor, How can that be?” Hermione asked and the headmaster could see a disbelieving look on her face before she looked away. Afraid to let him see the tears that were building because of Harry’s possible predicament getting worse. “Harry only drank one ground up fang, I thought to become a werewolf you’d have to be bitten by one for the curse to take an effect as not enough of the virus would be injected into the human system for it to take an effect.”
“I am afraid Miss Granger, that in this case that is only half true .” Dumbledore replied solemnly. “You see while in the normal course of events that would be perfectly true but I’m afraid this isn’t normal. The Metamorphic potion as I’m sure you’re aware temporarily mixes with the drinkers cell’s to create the appearance change. This would of given the wolf virus time to combine to Harry’s cells.”
At that Hermione couldn’t hold back and the dam that held her tears back broke. Looking up her teary eyes met Dumbledore’s and she could see sparkling tears roll down beneath his half moon spectacles and into his silvery beard as she asked. “What’s going to happen to Harry, Professor?”
“As I said earlier Miss Granger, that all depends on tonight. If as I pray, Harry has returned to his normal state by tomorrow than I believe there is no need for us to worry about Harry becoming a werewolf as the effects of the potion would have worn off. However…” the headmaster’s voice suddenly turned serious. “…if as I fear Harry still remains in the form of a young women tomorrow morning then we must be on are guard. You see Miss Granger, my theory why Harry would remain in his state is that the Werewolf gene will have blinded to his Cell’s; along with the effects of the Potion. Now that I have told you this Miss Granger, do you still whish to help Harry through this?”
Hermione didn’t need time to think before she said in a determined voice “Yes professor.”
Giving her a understanding smile, Professor Dumbledore said “Very well miss Granger, you may help Harry through this if the worse should happen but I must also inform you that Miss Delacour shall still be coming to Hogwarts to watch over the two of you.”
However before Hermione could retort, the Headmaster said “It is for your own protection Miss Granger. I do know that Harry would never do anything that would intentionally put either you or Mr Weasley in danger. However if the virus takes hold of him then he may not act or think normally. You see Miss Granger, werewolves are very instinctual creatures and even a very controlled one like Remus can occasionally become rather unstable when angry so if you‘ll forgive me for saying this but given the recent events and emotional strain that Harry has been under; it would be fair to assume that he may become unpredictable at some point.”
The only response the sixth year could give was a nod of understanding as she listened to ageing headmaster, tears rolling down her rosy checks . “Now Miss Granger, I must insist that if Harry starts to act in any way unusual that you report it to either Miss Delacour, Professor McGonagall or myself; no matter how small.” And as she gave him one last nod, the head master said “Very well then miss Granger, but I’m afraid we must now end this conversation. Good night Miss Granger.”
**********************
Harry sighed happily as he lay his head on the soft hospital wing pillow, his mind at easy for the first time since he had woken up earlier that night; courtesy of an easy sleep potion from Madam Pomfrey.
Unable to remember anything prier to walking into the Hospital Wing with Ron and Professor Slughorn, he could only reflect on the series of comical events that took place since then. Like watching as a distraught Madam Pomfrey muttered to herself about potion accidents while trying to find him a larger, more suitable pair of pajamas and then seeing Ron blush as he changed; even if he only saw Harry’s back it was still a comical sight to see his face redder than his hair.
Still it hadn’t taken Professor Slughorn to hurry Ron up and say his goodbyes before leaving. This left Harry alone in the hospital Wing, watching as the darkness of night consumed him and the feel of his tired and aching muscles caught up to him. And before the peace of sleep finally washed over him, A comforting thought came to the teen.
‘ Well, at least I get to spend a lot of time around Hermione and Fleur.’
AN: Okay, I am really sorry it has taken me so long to update but I hope this makes up for it.
