CHAPTER TWO
There was no question t hat the child's eyes needed to be kept&n bsp;secret and Mikoto was an
obvious cho ice to keep him in her home. No one could enter the private residence of th e
Head and Clan orphans were under the guardianship of the Head of their Cl an Head, though
they were usually raised in the clan orphanage by other clan&nbs p;members. It wasn't that
unusual for He ads or their wives to take a special&nbs p;interest in one or two and welcome the m
into their homes though, so no on e would look too closely at Mikoto  ;taking care of the boy.
Especially when his only living relatives were an aunt& nbsp;on the front lines and a paranoid < br> grandfather.
The first few weeks&nb sp;with the child were disturbing. For the&nb sp;first week straight he used his
Mange kyo constantly. Both Mikoto and the Council&n bsp;were amazed by the pure chakra stores&nbs p;
that meant the child possessed. But af ter seven days those stores finally failed&nb sp;and a private
Uchiha Medic-nin had to be brought in to do a chakra trans fer. It was clear that if the child  ;
did not stop using his eyes then h e would kill himself before his first mo nth of life. Mikoto
had been unsure  ;of how to stop him, but finally she&nbs p;just settled on telling the child point&nbs p;
blank, since he had such an eerie  ;understanding of everything around him. She'd&nbs p;been both
relieved and disturbed, by t he child's obvious understanding.
For&n bsp;the first time since he was born Mik oto saw the child's real eye color. They were a dark
emerald green that mad e Mikoto gasp. She'd never seen green ey es. She'd known it was
possible of course, but no one in Konohagakure had s uch eyes. And it was a brilliant deep&nb sp;
color. Eyes like that, though beautiful,&n bsp;though eerily so and ancient, should have assured
the child would not have h ad the Sharingan. The only members of th e Uchiha Clan with dark
brown and b lack eyes could possess the Sharingan, blue&n bsp;or lighter browns meant the Kekkei
G enkai had passed the child over. It was& nbsp;oddly fitting to Mikoto that such a  ;powerful child
would be born with impos sible eyes.
He didn't activate his Mangekyo again, but he was constantly w atching Mikoto as she moved
about the&nb sp;house and when he was focusing on som ething he would sometimes activate a
nor mal three tomoe Sharingan.
A littl e of the tension in the house relaxed&nb sp;when news of her husband's survival came&n bsp;from
the battlefield, but he couldn't&nbs p;return home yet and since the information&n bsp;was so sensitive,
they'd been unable  ;to inform him of the child's birth.
It left Mikoto both weary and sn appy. She hadn't seen any of her friends for fear of news of
the child  ;spreading. Kushina would never spread anything&nb sp;around on purpose, but the girl
was&n bsp;talkative and Mikoto couldn't risk a slip . She knew her friend was hurt by t he silence,
but she knew Mikoto well&nbs p;enough not to press. Mikoto had always  ;opened up to Kushina
when she was ready. The Clan was hardly a help. Mikot o loved them, she really did, but for&nb sp;
them she had to be strong at all times. She hadn't been able to open&nbs p;up to her formerly
close cousins or&nb sp;friends since the day she married Fugaku.& nbsp;She would never regret the
decision,&nbs p;but some days, especially without a certain motormouth red head, were lonelier
than others. And Mikoto was having a lot&nbs p;of lonely days. Except for council meetings she
hardly saw anyone, rarely leaving&n bsp;the house anymore. Her only visitor was&n bsp;Kyoko, but those
were always tense.
The fact was that Haruto hated&nbs p;the Midwife.
At first Mikoto&nbs p;thought she was imagining it, but she grew more and more certain. Every
time&n bsp;the woman came the always quiet child&nbs p;would fuss until Mikoto picked him up and
wouldn't let her lay him down u ntil the woman left. He always activated  ;his Sharingan when
Kyoko visited and wa tched the Midwife with narrow unnerving eyes& nbsp;until the woman couldn't
take it an ymore. Mikoto had started to resent the child for chasing away the only company
she had, but the closer she came to giving birth, the more she started to&n bsp;wonder if there
might be a reason&nb sp;for the behavior.
Kyoko had sta rted to act oddly. Gone was her normal&n bsp;dignified air. Her clothes, which had
always been impeccable though old, were sta rting to show wear and her hair, always& nbsp;worn
up carefully, was being thrown  ;into a messy braid. If that wasn't enou gh Mikoto had more
than once caught  ;her wondering in places she shouldn't be&nbs p;in Mikoto's home. Then there
were time s that she seemed to be talking to herself. Mikoto forgave this though, suspecting&nb sp;
it had more to do with the strai n of the war and Kyoko's rising age  ;than anything else. The
woman had a&nbs p;rough year, losing her only soon in ea rly January and then her grandchild and
daughter-in-law.
But still some ol d instinct that had always told Mikoto w hen danger was near made her
watch the woman. Made her shorten their meetings.&n bsp;Made Mikoto not want Kyoko to be the
one who deliver her son. But Mikot o kept it to herself, scolding herself. Kyoko had always
been a loyal good woman. She'd delivered Fugaku and Fugaku's fa ther and even played
nanny to both when they were younger. She'd been involved&n bsp;in the birth of every Uchiha for
the past fifty years. Her loyalty was unquestionable. As unquestionable as her moral&nbs p;
standing.
“He'll be&nbs p;born soon.†Kyoko observed a warm&nb sp;smile on her face as her glowing gree n hand
stroked Mikoto large stomach.
Mikoto nodded, smiling to herself and wishing desperately Fugaku would be back&nbs p;when that
happened. At least Kyoko was looking better. The woman's hair had cl early had some effort
but into it a nd her cloths were better than they had& nbsp;in weeks. And with that smile Mikoto&nbs p;
could see the kind old woman who'd&nbs p;given her candies when she was a child . It made
Mikoto feel ridiculous. Clearl y Kyoko had been going through a rough&n bsp;spot and she was
finally recovering from it. Mikoto supposed it might have b een Miaka's death that caused it.
It&nbs p;had been years since the old woman had lost a mother after all.
Har uto, who'd been left in his crib while&n bsp;Kyoko did her examination, eyed the scene with as
much distrust and frustration&n bsp;as a two month old baby could. He'd& nbsp;only allowed himself to
be put in&n bsp;the crib so long as the two women&nb sp;stayed within his sight. His green eyes&nb sp;instantly
bled red as Kyoko glanced h is way, causing the woman to turn back&n bsp;with a shiver. Mikoto
frowned. She k new the boy understood more than any bab y had a right to and she'd told
him quite plainly to stop harassing the&nbs p;Midwife.
“That's it.â& euro; Mikoto said pushing herself to her  ;feet abruptly, startling both the Midwife an d
the baby. Mikoto marched over to Haruto's crib and picked up the baby unc eremoniously.
Instantly big green eyes were&n bsp;looking at her innocently. Mikoto frowned  ;surprised by the
sudden realization that&nbs p;the child was quite cute. He'd been he r only companion besides
Kyoko for weeks and she'd only ever found his obvious&n bsp;intellect and unimaginable skills
disturbing.& nbsp;She'd never really thought of the fact&n bsp;that he was still just a baby. She&n bsp;shook the
thought off though. For no w Haruto needed a scolding and he needed it now.
“I've told you to stop harassing Kyoko-san.†Mikoto told him and under Kyoko's perpl exed
gaze left the room and marched  ;towards Fugaku's office. Haruto looked at he r wide eyed as
she opened the door& nbsp;to the office, revealing the small bed&n bsp;her husband used when his work
kept& nbsp;him in there for days.
Haruto looked panicked at the idea, clearly un derstanding what was going on, and Mikoto&nbs p;
almost relented. But she stopped herself.&n bsp;She would do this. She had to.
“I'll come get you when&n bsp;Kyoko-san leaves. Be good.†Mikoto  ;told him as firmly as she could
an d returned to the kitchen where they'd b een doing the exam. Kyoko had set out&nb sp;two cups
of tea.
â€& oelig;Is something wrong milady?†Kyoko&nbs p;asked old eyes concerned. Mikoto shook her& nbsp;head.
“I'm just teac hing the child how to properly behave.⠀ Mikoto explained taking the seat
across from the woman. The tea smelt swe et and of some unfamiliar flavor. â&eur o;œWhat is this?â€
â& euro;œIt's a new mixture, good for calm ing and for helping a restless child in& nbsp;the womb.†Kyoko
explained and&nb sp;then gave Mikoto a considering look. &acir c;€œYou do realize the child is st ill a baby.
He's going to be fussy& nbsp;and possessive of you. As the only person he sees, he's probably
identified  ;you as his mother and he's developed en ough to know I take away your attention.
Please don't be too harsh on him.& acirc;€
Mikoto frowned. That did&n bsp;make sense. Clearly she'd been mistaken t o believe the child's
behavior had a&nbs p;deeper meaning. It was ridiculous really. S he took a sip of the tea and
i nstantly felt relaxed.
“I t's quite good.†Mikoto said relishing the sweet taste coating her mouth. Odd& nbsp;she didn't
normally enjoy sweets. Kyoko& nbsp;smiled looking pleased. She took another  ;sip.
“Do you suspect&nbs p;it will be an easy birth?†Miko to questioned shoulder falling loosely to the
back of her chair.
â&e uro;œOh, very easy. I'll simply cut you open and take the child.†Kyoko& nbsp;said sweetly.
Mikoto's breath caug ht as her arms fell uselessly against th e table hands going limp her cup
fa lling out of them. The numbness was spre ading more quickly, more quickly than any&nbs p;
paralyzing agent she'd ever known. Kyoko&nb sp;was watching her was a sickly pleased  ;smile.
“Why?†Mik oto said eyes drooping and voice already  ;slurred. She'd only had two drinks it < br> shouldn't be affecting her so badly.
“Your war took my son,&n bsp;I'm taking yours.†Kyoko said sere nely, standing and coming to
stand besid e the already comatose woman. Smiling down&nb sp;at her, Kyoko hummed to herself.
Now& nbsp;I'll she needed was to kill the lit tle monster that had seen her and to&nbs p;get to the drop
point.
