Harry Potter - Series Fan Fiction ❯ werewolf chronicles: Chamber of Secrets ❯ Chapter 4 ( Chapter 5 )

Wee - more chapters, and I generally don't have much to say… `cept the boring stuff, like:
NOTES: First off, I do not own Harry Potter, nor am I making any sort of profit off this work - the world of Harry Potter belongs to J.K Rowling!
Second, this will follow closely to the original plot J.K. has laid down in her books but the whole story is told from the view point of my own original character! So events and occasions will be slightly altered to fit my character into the picture! Thus the `alternate universe' genre.
Now then, boring stuff:

Chapter Four: The Howler
Renee yawned as she walked her way down with Padma to the Great Hall for breakfast; the dream of crashing (well, almost crashing - she always woke up before it happened) into the black-haired, green eyed boy on the broom had her up more times in the night than she could count. She yawned again.
`You sure you're alright?' Padma asked.
`I just need some food in my stomach - that will wake me right up.' Renee replied; she hadn't really eaten much last night since she had been so nervous; she was starving now. They made their way to the Great Hall and headed on over to the Ravenclaw table, seating themselves towards the middle. Renee licked her lips - she had smelled the food before they had even gotten down the marble steps - and began piling her plate with a few pieces of toast, a good helping of eggs and couple strips of bacon. She chatted with Padma and the other students around - many were older than her, so she asked them for a few tips on classes, since this would be her first day.
Before it even came through the windows of the Hall, Renee could hear the fluttering of hundreds of wings heading towards the castle. This must be the owl post mom told me about. Wonder if she sent something to me? Renee lifted her head up towards the openings, the students closest to her wondering what she was looking for when sure enough, the owls came flurrying into the Great Hall, circling around the tables till they found their person they were delivering their letters to.
Renee watched and soon picked out a brown hawk flying amongst the owls, which seemed small against them, despite being a hawk. Renee stood and whistled, holding her arm out as the hawk turned its head to the sound and glided gracefully down to her. It landed with ease and perched on her arm; many of the students were staring with interest.
Renee took the envelope in its beak, the hawk making clicking noises with its tongue.
`I'm gone two days and you miss me? You're such a baby, Calamir.' The hawk, Calamir, only bowed its head, before stepping up her arm to perch on her shoulder, rubbing its beak against the side of her head. Renee laughed, gently stroking the feathers on its head.
`Alright, alright - you can stay for bit till I give mom - and Irenee - my reply.' Renee sat down, and reached for a piece of bacon from her plate, and held it up for Calamir. The brown hawk snatched it from her fingers, ducking its head as it tried to devour the meat.
Renee tore open the envelope, pulling out the letter from her mother:
Renee,
I hope everything is well and you are enjoying yourself. Now, I understand classes start today, so please let me know how they are; I'm so excited to hear about them! And be sure to be careful with your wand - remember what Mr. Ollivander said.
Everything is fine here - your brother won't admit it, but he misses you dearly, even if you are learning to become a witch. Silver has seen good fortunes so far for your future - that's a very wonderful sign, Renee. Oh - and give my regards to Albus when you can - and I am expecting some delightful wizarding souvenirs when you get the chance!
Love,
Mother
Renee smiled - she should be expecting a letter from her brother fairly soon then. Despite the distain he had be showing earlier, and his threat of not writing or associating with her, she knew he would give up within the week she was gone. Renee put the letter down and reached for another piece of bacon to feed to Calamir, seeing he was done with the first piece.
`Your mom sounds nice.' Renee jumped a little, looking over at Padma - she had almost forgotten where she was.
`Y-yeah. My mom is pretty nice. She was really excited when we got the letter about Hogwarts.'
`Your mom knows Dumbledore? Like personally?' Another student next to her asked; Renee was a little startled, before nodding her head. She supposed calling someone by their first name was considered personal, so then yes. Her mother never really went in depth about her “acquaintance” with the headmaster. Renee folded up the letter and stuffed it into her pocket. She was about to reach for her goblet when what sounded like an explosion made her knock it over; a woman's voice rang loudly throughout the Great Hall.
`… STEALING THE CAR, I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SURPRISED IF THEY'D EXPELLED YOU, YOU WAIT TILL I GET HOLD OF YOU, I DON'T SUPPOSE YOU STOPPED TO THINK WHAT YOUR FATHER AND I WENT THROUGH WHEN WE SAW IT HAD GONE …'
Renee spun in her seat; Calamir screeched and spread his wings, only to hide himself on her lap. Over the heads of the other students cramming their necks to see who the voice was talking to, Renee spotted a redhead boy, but he was sinking so low in his seat, she wondered if he would disappear beneath the table and not resurface again.
`… LETTER FROM DUMBLEDORE LAST NIGHT, I THOUGHT YOUR FATHER WOULD DIE OF SHAME, WE DIDN'T BRING YOU UP TO BEHAVE LIKE THIS, YOU AND HARRY COULD BOTH HAVE DIED…' Renee watched as the boy next to the redhead one, tilted his head down; he was obviously trying to pretend he couldn't hear it. Which was a difficult task considering the voice was loud enough to echo off the walls of the Hall, and make the plates and silverware rattle.
`… ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED, YOUR FATHER'S FACING AN INQUIRY AT WORK, IT'S ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT AND IF YOU PUT ANOTHER TOE OUT OF LINE WE'LL BRING YOU STRAIGHT BACK HOME.' The walls finally stopped shaking, the dishware coming to a stand still. Renee watched as a red envelope (which she guessed was where the voice had come from) fold itself up and then burst into flames, leaving nothing but ashes left in front of the redhead boy.
She went into thought as a few students laughed, and then gradually, the chatter picked up again. A thoughtful expression came to her face - now she remembered. There had been a lot of talk about it - about two boys who apparently had flown to school from London in a car. They supposedly had landed in the Whomping Willow and only barely managed to escape its angry branches. Renee had thought it was just someone's wild imagination, but it seemed this letter proved it really did happen. A new question now popped into her head - what had been that letter?
Renee prodded Padma.
`Wha-what was that about? Why did the envelope yell like that?'
`It's called a Howler - scary stuff if you ask me.' Renee glanced at the student aside of her; even though she asked Padma (who had barely opened her mouth to reply, before being cut off), she thanked him anyways.
Renee gazed down at the brown, quivering feathery lump on her lap; she began stroking his feathers gently, softly coaxing Calamir to calm down. Like her, Calamir did not like loud noises and that howler letter had been enough to scare the poor bird almost to death. Finally, Calamir lifted his head up, stretching out his wings and hopped himself up on the table. Renee told him to go wait in the school owlery till she was ready with her reply to mother. The hawk screeched before taking off, flying out the window and up to the owlery tower, where Renee would find him later.
