Chapter 9: Screams In The Night

Kagome reluctantly let Willow apply a small amount of the stink formula like a perfume, she still refused to touch the stuff herself.

"How long does this stuff last?" Kagome asked hesitantly when she caught a whiff of it.

"It fades in a couple of hours," Willow said as she capped the bottle, "the rest washes off with soap and water."

"So, what do you say we try the stuff out?" Buffy glanced over to InuYasha.

InuYasha was scowling at Willow. He could smell the stuff from his cell and wasn't happy about it being on Kagome.

"Come on InuYasha," Buffy held open the cage door, "go get her."

InuYasha slowly stood up, scowled at Buffy and walked with no great hurry to Kagome's side.

"*What do you think InuYasha?*" Kagome asked hesitantly.

InuYasha grimaced, "*You stink.*" he stated and took several steps away. In some very small place, he felt relieved. Mostly though he was just annoyed.

"*Great.*" Kagome said in fake enthusiasm, "*We're back to that.*"

InuYasha smirked in amusement. At least now he could concentrate.

"What'd he say?" Xander asked Kagome.

"It's working." Kagome answered, "Now what do we do?"

"The attacks are beginning to branch away from the strip mall," Giles motioned to a map of Sunnydale with thumbtacks marking the attacks, "there doesn't seem to be any pattern yet. Only that the attacks are getting more dangerous and involving more people, and that it seems to be gaining strength. If we don't stop this…imp, now it could become a real problem."

"But InuYasha can still track him!" Kagome piped up, "He can help us find him before it gets any worse!"

"You want to go on patrol with me tonight?" Buffy asked, "Maybe he can pick up the trail again."

*

So it came to be that Buffy and Kagome walked slowly through the town after midnight, with InuYasha on all fours in front of them searching through the streets for a fresh scent. When they couldn't find any new trails there, they tried the park in hope that the imp was hiding.

"I don't see anything." Kagome sighed.

"I thought InuYasha would smell it before you could see it." Buffy said conversationally, peering through the trees keeping look out for the usual demons.

"No I mean-" Kagome squeaked as she fell to the ground, "I mean I CAN'T see anything!" Kagome finished unhappily.

"*Get up.*" InuYasha called back to her without looking back, "*Your slowing us down!*

"*Oh, don't worry about me InuYasha!*" Kagome called ahead to him, "*I'm fine*"

"*Keh!*"

"Well, that sounded rude." Buffy helped Kagome stand.

Kagome nodded, "It was. And thank you."

"No prob." Buffy smiled as they started following InuYasha again, "Why do you put up with that? I mean, if you can drop him with a word, why not use it?"

"He doesn't really mean it." Kagome smiled back at Buffy, "He acts tough but if I was really hurt, you'd see a completely different side of him. As long as he didn't know you were here."

"*Keh! This is useless!*" InuYasha cursed as he stood and turned to face the girls, eyes glittering in the dark, "*It hasn't been here.*"

"… I can't decide if that's sexy or disturbing." Buffy mumbled to Kagome, addressing InuYasha's eyes.

"I know." Kagome giggled, "InuYasha wants to call it a night. It's not here."

Buffy nodded, "I'd like to get some sleep for school tomorrow."

Kagome turned to see InuYasha standing close to them, "*See InuYasha! Buffy thinks school is important too.* InuYasha doesn't understand that school is important here."

"*Keh!*"

"Oookay." Buffy stepped back a pace and started to lead them back to her house, "If mom asks, we went to the Bronze. It'll hurt a little, me not you, but it's safer then the truth."

"It must be difficult doing your duty without your family knowing what you're doing." Kagome sympathized, "but sometimes, having your family helping you can also be difficult."

"I can imagine." Buffy agreed.

"To explain my absences from school, my grandpa said I had rumatism." Kagome said, "Among other things."

"Ouch." Buffy winced.

*

InuYasha leaned against the living room wall feigning sleep and hugging his sword. The girls had already retreated upstairs, after a brief encounter with Buffy's mom (who would be discussing this latter), to shower and sleep. He could hear the water turning off in the shower now, and he just knew that the last of that damn stink fluid had been cleaned off Kagome's freshly washed skin.

He remembered that smell when it was unsullied by the stench. Enticing and invigorating, if lacking the subtlety of Kagome's natural scents. He could remember how she smelled when she had finally given up in the kitchen. She had wanted him. That was her smell. He could almost separate the fake from the real.

This was getting him restless. Soon Kagome would be up there, tucked in bed and sleeping soundly, with that smell on her. Maybe he should go check on her. Just to be certain.

InuYasha stood up slowly and crept carefully through the house. He paused on the second floor, listening to make sure that everyone was asleep before he moved down the hall to the room Kagome was staying in. as quietly as he could he opened the door and walked in. The room was brighter then her room at the shrine, street lamps here cast their light into the windows making it easy to see the girl lying in the bed.

There she was, sleeping innocently. Giving off that smell. This was ridiculous. This was cruel. Tricking some poor girl into giving off a scent like that. What was wrong with these people?

InuYasha leaned over her, taking in more of the perfume that mixed so deliciously with her own sweet smell. Placing a hand on the other side of her for balance he leaned in farther, breathing delicately.

Kagome shifted uncomfortably in her sleep, uncertain of his close proximity. InuYasha stilled until she settled again. Then lowered his head to taste the air above her exposed shoulder.

InuYasha had long ago stopped thinking about what he was doing, or how incredibly risky it was. All that occupied his mind now was the remembered taste of her skin, and the anticipation of the feel of her flesh under his fangs.

InuYasha opened his mouth distractedly and began to lower his head farther to wrap his jaws around her shoulder.

Kagome squeaked and jumped in her sleep, snapping InuYasha out of his haze. He straightened and looked down at Kagome.

`*What the hell am I doing?' he managed to think before Kagome screamed loudly. The sound caused InuYasha to throw himself against the wall a few feet to the side of her bed.

Kagome sat up straight, eyes wide with fear. Her hand went up to feel the tingling patch of skin on her shoulder, "*A dream.*" Kagome mumbled dazedly, then darkly, "*Too many vampire stories.*"

"Kagome?" Buffy stopped running a few steps past the door, "InuYasha, what-"

Kagome noticed InuYasha sprawled against the wall for the first time.

"Buffy?" Buffy's Mom's voice drifted into the room announcing that she would soon be there.

The girls turned to the hall then back at where InuYasha used to be, then to the newly opened window.

"Kagome?" Buffy's Mom stood in the doorway, "Is everything alright?"

"Yes, I had a bad dream." Kagome blinked in confusion, "I'm sorry I woke you."

"That's alright." She looked around the room suspiciously, "Buffy, what are you doing here?"

"I heard the scream." Buffy answered simply.

"Fine," She put her hand to her head and stifled a yawn, "Then let's all get some sleep. Buffy, close the window for Kagome, Ok?"

"Sure mom, `night." Buffy watched her mom leave before she walked over to the window, leaned out slightly and looked onto the roof. Two males, one in all red the other in all black, were sitting with their backs against wall, "Angel?" she whispered, surprised.

"Hi Buffy." The far male gave a small wave of his hand, "I told you I was a friend of Buffy's."

"Keh!" was InuYasha's reply.

"Buffy?" her mothers voice drifted back into the room, "aren't you going back to bed?"

"I'm just helping Kagome calm down." Buffy called back, she shut the window on the two demons and turned back to Kagome, "So, what was really going on in here?" she asked as she took a seat next to Kagome.

"I really had a nightmare." Kagome answered, "I don't know why InuYasha was here. I dreamed I was being chased by a vampire and he was going to bite me."

"You travel with demons and vampire stories freak you out?" Buffy lifted an eyebrow to show what she thought of that.

"Yeah, it's weird…" Kagome sighed, "Actually my nightmares are almost exclusively about algebra."

Buffy laughed with her, "Just remember, they can't come in unless you invite them. Good night."

"Good night Buffy." Kagome smiled.

-

Angel gave InuYasha a half smirk, "You were going to bite her?"

"Shut up!" InuYasha barked.

"It's no fair to do it while there sleeping." Angel prodded again.

"You still haven't explained what you're doing here." InuYasha scowled.

"I came to see Buffy." Angel became serious again.

"This is Kagome's room." InuYasha reminded him.

"I heard a scream." Angel explained.

"You heard her. Bad dream." InuYasha folded his arms and closed his eyes to signal the discussion was over.

"Have you told her how you feel?" Angel asked him, "You should talk about these things before you try that again."

"What makes you think I feel anything?" InuYasha didn't open his eyes.

"…You jumped out the window when the mom woke up." Angel answered, then leaned over slightly before adding in a lower voice, "And you where blushing."

"Don't you have to see the *youkai exterminator*?" InuYasha changed the subject hoping to get rid of him.

"Right." Angel assumed he was referring to Buffy

InuYasha settled in to spend the night right there while Angel moved across the roof to find Buffy's window.

"Hi Angel." Buffy was waiting for him, "Have a nice talk with InuYasha?"

"Yeah, what do you know about him and this Kagome?" he asked.

"Uh, they come from Japan where they work together putting a jewel together." Buffy struggled to summaries what she knew, "Why?"

"I think he was trying to mark her." Angel said.

"What?" Buffy asked darkly.

"Demons, more powerful demons, will mark humans and lesser demons to show that they belong to them." Angel explained, "It connects them to their master and gives them some powers… this is all in human superstition already. I'm surprised you haven't heard about it."

"InuYasha was going to make Kagome his minion?" Buffy was thoroughly confused.

"No… damn, I wish humans were more superstitious these days." Angel glanced back toward InuYasha, he could probably hear them, "It's not just minions. Witches were thought to be the lovers of the devil and carried his mark."

"Oh, he was going after her as a lover. Well that's different." Buffy relaxed for a second, "Except that she was asleep, eww."

]

"Which is why I'm asking if you're sure about them." Angel continued.

"Well," Buffy thought back, "When they found each other in the library was super fluffy and the scene in the kitchen was leaving PG-13 way behind… I'm just glad I got there before any clothes came off. It's probably still the experimental perfume that Kagome got doused with."

"Ah." Angel took in the information. It looked like this InuYasha was on the up and up.

"That's not what you came to tell me is it?" Buffy asked.

"No," Angel leaned closer to her, "there's a new vampire in town."

"And?"

"He's powerful."

Buffy nodded and hide a yawn, he always said that.

"No, he's really powerful. Like a nasty demon." Angel pressed, "And he's looking for something, something that can make him more powerful."

"What?" Buffy said, slightly more interested.

"I don't know." he leaned back, slightly embarrassed, "I just thought I'd give you the heads up while I was in the area. I'll be back when I have more."

A/N: Not much to say this time, I hope you enjoyed the chapter and I really hope you review. I do have the rest of the story pretty tightly outlined but I'm not giving any promises as to when I'll get the rest out(that just curses it), I'll just say that I'm working to get the last few chapters out by the end of the month.
