Chapter Three (Alt. Version)

Once she was out of the clearing, she saw Rune leaning against a tree. He had a big grin plastered across his face. He was clearly amused by what had just taken place.

"Well, I guess you showed him, eh? He will think twice before picking another fight with you. But don't you think that throwing him against that tree was…a little bit much?"

"No, he deserved it! He was bad mouthing me and was being rude to me!" she stated, practically screaming again.

"Woah! I ain't picking a fight with you. Now calm down. I just want to talk to you." He said and held his hands up as a sign of peace.

"So are you going to talk to me about the mating rituals too? Just great!" she said and threw her hands up in the air and rolled her eyes.

"Now, I didn't say that. But I do want to a little bit. It's still mom and dad's job to tell you about that. I just want to calmly talk to you about why they are telling you. Will you at least listen to what I have to say?"

"I guess so. We can talk on the way back to the village." She said still a bit disgruntled from the fight she had with Kilik. He nodded and they started back to the village.

*~~~~~~~~Chapter Three - The Talk~~~~~~~~*

"You acted very childish back at the hut this morning. They were…" he started but was quickly interrupted by Jun.

"But I don't care about some dumb rituals! I…" but Rune cut her off.

"Will you be quiet and let me speak before you add your two cents in?" Juniper huffed and crossed her arms over her chest. "Now, as I was saying. They were only trying to talk to you about the rituals. They were not trying to force you to mate. They want to keep you sake. If dad had it his way, you would stay at home with him until he died. You're his favorite and only daughter. He barely lets Shippo or Akino near you. The only reason he does is because mom would s-word him into the future!

"He has been over protective of you since you were born. Your daddy's little girl. He knows your growing up and he wishes you would stay the little girl who would fallow him around all day. Understand?"

"Yes…but he needs to let me grow up." She said and uncrossed her arms.

"Your right." He continued, "He does need to let you grow up. Dad just doesn't want to. He knows he has to. Especially since your birthday is tomorrow. That's why they wanted to talk to you. You are of age since you're sixteen and since you're turning seventeen tomorrow, more male demons will notice you. They just want to protect you and make you aware. That's all they wanted to do. Now, have you calmed down a bit?" he asked as they came to the village.

"Yes, I feel a little bit calmer."

"Good. Now I think you should apologize to them before supper so no one is in a fowl mood. Okay?" Juniper nodded her head and headed to the hut.

*~~Mean While~~*

"Do you know why I said the s-word?" Kagome asked Inuyasha as he sat in a corner and pouted.

"No." he huffed, "Why don't you tell me?" he said sarcastically.

Kagome gave a sign before she began, "You were acting like a child fighting with her like that. She was upset and your fighting didn't help. Hopefully Rune is able to calm her down."

"I'm sorry. It's just…with her birthday tomorrow…I'm…I'm a bit edgy." He said quietly.

"Oh, Inuyasha." Kagome said as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, "I know how you feel. I know you don't want her to grow up, but she is. She'll be seventeen tomorrow and we have to let her grow up. Se isn't a little girl anymore." She finished and leaned her head on his shoulder.

"I know. But it's hard to let her grow up/ Demons tend to be very protective of their young. Maybe I'm over protective."

"It is hard, I understand that. It's hard for me too. You're not over protective. You're just worried about her. Don't worry. Okay?" she said and began to stand up.

"Okay." Inuyasha said and too up also, "They are back. I can smell their scents. Juniper must have been crying. I can faintly smell salt."

"We won't ask her about it. It's probably better that we don't. But I do think you should at least apologize to her for over reacting."

Inuyasha nodded and went to wait for them to come to the hut. He felt bad for making her cry. He had made his little girl cry. This greatly upset him but he did not show it. He went and sat back in his corner for them to come inside.

Juniper was the first to reach the hut followed by Rune. She felt better after Rune talked to her. She wasn't upset or angry anymore. She was her cheery self again and had a smile on her face when she walked in the hut. But as soon as she saw her father sitting in the corner with a somber look on his face, her smile faded. Kagome saw this as a time for father and daughter to be alone and dragged rune out to help her get firewood for supper.

They stood and/or sat there staring at each other in silence for a few moments. It was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The silence was making them both very uncomfortable.

"I'm…" they both started at the same time.

"You can go first." Inuyasha said quickly.

Juniper nodded and walked over to him and sat down beside him. "Dad…I'm sorry for actin so childish this morning." She began slowly, "I should have listened to what you had to say."

"I am also sorry. I shouldn't have gotten frustrated and upset with you. I also shouldn't have yelled like that." Inuyasha said quietly, not look at his daughter, "It's just…I want you to still be the little girl that would come into my room at night when she was scared. I want you to still think of me as your hero and the strongest man alive."

"I still think you're the strongest and you're still my hero, daddy. Nothing will change that." She said and then gave him a hug, "I love you, daddy."

"I love you too, Juniper."

*~~Outside~~*

"So what do you plan on giving Jun for her birthday tomorrow?" Rune asked his mother as he chopped firewood.

"Well from Sango, Miroku, Akino and the twins, she's getting a kimono…I think. Sango told me last week but I really don't remember. Then from your father she's getting a sword made from one of his fangs. Toutousai hasn't brought it yet. That's why your father is so edgy. Hopefully it will be finished and delivered by tomorrow. Then I have something special to give her and Shippo is giving her something. He hasn't said what it was though. Have you gotten your sister anything yet?" Kagome asked as she gathered the cut wood.

"More or less yeah. I have something in mind. I hope she likes it." He replied whipping his face clean of sweat.

"Really? What is it?"

"It's a secret. Even you will have to wait to see what it is."

"Well, then I know she'll like it. What ever it may be." With that they headed back to the hut to start supper.

*~~At Supper~~*

Everyone was sitting around the cooking fire silently waiting for their supper to finish cooking. Every once in a while someone would glance at someone else. They sat around the fire in this order: Kagome sat beside Inuyasha, beside him sat Juniper and beside her sat Rune. Then beside Rune sat Shippo. Then came Akino and then Miroku. Next were the twins and last was Sango who was also sitting beside Kagome. They all sat gazing into the fire. Occasionally Juniper or Inuyasha's ears would twitch. The silence was greatly bothering Rune so he decided to break it.

"Umm…I think supper is done." He said looking at his mother who seemed to be daydreaming.

"Huh? Oh! Yeah, I think it is done too." She replied back in a daze. Kagome and Sango quickly went about serving everyone their supper. Once everyone was served and had started eating, it got quiet once again. This time it was Akino who broke the silence.

"So Jun…are you excited about your birthday being tomorrow?" he asked timidly.

"Well…yes and no." she responded slowly.

"What do you mean by that?" Shippo questioned.

"Well, I am excited to get my presents and for the yummy food mom makes. But I'm not excited to get older."

"You do know that since you are part demon you will live for hundreds of years before you die. So you'll never grow old. You'll look like you're twenty for most of your life." Inuyasha explained to his daughter.

"I know but Akino's family is human and they won't live that long. Mama is also human and also won't live that long." She replied sadly as she stared at her empty bowl.

"Do you remember me telling you about the Shikon no Tama?" Kagome asked.

"Yes, you told me of how you broke it and then went out in search of the fragments. Then you told me that you destroyed it once it was completed."

"That's correct. But I never told you how we destroyed it did I?"

"No mama, you never did say how you destroyed it. You just said that you did."

"Well then, I will tell you how I did it. The Shikon no Tama had the power to grant a wish to who ever had it. So I wished that myself, Sango, Miroku and their children would have the same life span of that of a demon."

"So you mean that you and they will age like dad, Jun, and I?" Rune asked interested.

"Yes, they will age just like us. So you don't have to worry about seeing them grow old and die." Inuyasha answered his son.

"Do you feel any better, Jun?"

"Yes papa."

"Good, now why don't you go to bed now. Tomorrow is going to be a big day for you." Kagome said as she began to clean up the dishes. Sango got up and helped her while Miroku and Inuyasha took the already sleeping twins back to their hut and put them in bed. Juniper sat there for a few minutes and watched her father walk in the door as he came back from Miroku's hut. She then got up, bid her parents and Rune goodnight, and then went to her room and went to bed.

Skylar14: I haven't seen the end of the show so I don't actually know what became of the Jewel of Four Souls. I apologize for any mistakes concerning it. I hope you enjoy the chapter. I am not pleased with it but it will do. Please review!
