The Enigma Called Love
Part 5 - Little Incidents Before Breakfast

Kimishima yawned loudly as he sat in his buggy waiting just outside the wall separating the City from the rest of the island. Checking his watch, he saw that it was almost 5:30AM. “Damn that Cherise, why'd I have to come out here so early just to pick her up? She couldn't have made it later in the morning, and let me sleep in a little.”

Just then, what looked like a streak of pink flew out of the nearby tunnel before skidding into a turn and heading almost near where Kimishima was parked before stopping and a figure with orange hair and pink sunglasses leapt out of the driver's seat. What startled Kimishima the most wasn't his driving or his rambling about how he had “shortened the world once again,” but that he was wearing a HOLY uniform.

Son of a bitch, HOLY's gotta be run by a bunch of lunatics if he's on their payroll!

Then, the passenger side door opened and out came a figure Kimishima recognized. Looking rather cross, Cherise pulled something out of the back of the car and then rammed it into the guy's face. “Dammit, Straight Cougar, you ruined the cake I was saving for TK's birthday tomorrow!”

Cherise knew Cougar was not much controllable, especially when it came to his obsession with speed. HOLY had lost track of how many cars Cougar had wrecked with his alter: Radically Good Speed. First the cars were broken down and remade in Cougar's image, and then, especially if pushed too far, the vehicles would explode. Commander Zigmar had tried threatening to have Cougar personally pay for two new cars for each one he wrecked, but it seemed Cougar had built himself quite the nest egg since joining HOLY. Despite his obsession, however, Cougar's loyalty and understanding of secrecy were unquestionable. This was why he had been assigned to deliver Cherise and her supplies.

His face covered in vanilla frosting and chocolate cake, Cougar removed his sunglasses, also covered in cake and icing, wiped some of it off with a finger and then tasted it. “Hmm, not enough sugar. Anyway, Cherie, it wasn't really ruined until you just hit me with it, and you bought cake mix as a back-up, right?”

“It's CHERISE, you grammatically-and-memory-challenged ding-dong! And it was still ruined originally by your insane driving-!”

“Keep it down, will you? It's too early for any fighting!”

Both officers looked to see a sleepy Kimishima walking over to them, his buggy parked just a few feet away. Cherise bowed towards him. “Morning, Kimishima, and thanks for picking me up.”

“Yeah, yeah, but why so early?”

“Because, I'm going to cook breakfast. A real breakfast, mind you.”

Using a handkerchief to clean off his face and glasses, Cougar then proceeded to help move the groceries Cherise had bought the day before into Kimishima's buggy. “Hope you got enough room for everything. If you'd like, I could drive you all to wherever you're going-.”

“And wreck Kimishima's ride? I don't think so!” Grabbing Kimishima aside, she explained “His power transforms vehicles into literal speed demons, but most of them blow up afterwards.”

Eyes bulging from this revelation, Kimishima pointed at Cougar threateningly. “Keeps you mitts and your alter off my ride!”

Backing away slowly from the buggy after putting in the last of the groceries, Cougar nodded in compliance. “Okay, okay! She means a lot to you, I respect that. A man should respect his wheels. After all, wheels are what give us speed, and with proper respect, they get you to wherever you want to go faster, thus showing the owner its respect as well-.”

“OH PUT A CORK IN IT!!” Cherise shouted. She took several deep breaths before facing a somewhat scared Kimishima. “Word to the wise, Kimishima; if you someday join HOLY, don't ever ask to be on his team.”

“I'll make a note of it, after I get you to Kazuma's and then I'm crashing for a few more hours.”

“Oh yes, thank you for reminding me!” Cougar leapt at Cherise and handed her an envelope. “Please do me this kind favor and deliver that to dear Kazuya for me. Well, I am off! Until tomorrow, Cherie! And remember; be here no later than 5:30PM!”

“IT'S CHER-! Oh fuck it,” Cherise said, exasperated, as Cougar jumped back into his car and took off back through the tunnel. “That guy really needs a life, a brain, a woman, or whatever.”

“Can we go now?” was all Kimishima said before letting out another yawn.

Wherever he was at that moment, TK knew one thing: he felt peaceful for the first time in what felt like eternity. He was standing on a cliff overlooking the ruins of a large city, one he didn't recognize. These ruins were now covered in a variety of plant life, and seemed to have been for a few centuries. Guessing from the distant howl of a wild animal, there were no humans at all here.

Suddenly, TK noticed something a few yards to his right. It was a very broad and much rusted sword sticking out of the ground. It, too, was covered in vines. But what seemed very odd was that he seemed to recognize it, though he knew he had never seen it before.

Go on. Take it.

The gentle, feminine voice startled TK. It, too, was familiar, but it somehow made him feel great sow and self-loathing. “Who are you?” He looked around, but found no one else with him.

It's your sword. It is time for you to take it up again.

“But it's not-. Why do I feel that I know you?”

Turning back towards the sword, TK gasped at the sight of a beautiful woman with green eyes and flowing red hair.

“It's okay. I don't blame you,” the girl said before she closed her eyes and, suddenly, a katana ran her through from behind.

That was when TK sat up in his straw bed, gasping for air and covered in cold sweat. Everything he had seen and heard in his dream vanished from memory, saved for the lingering words “I don't blame you.” TK looked around, and saw Koga snoring away in his doorway. Relieved that he didn't wake anyone up, given that there were no sounds of swift footsteps heading his way, he stood up and stretched his arms. Suddenly, he paused to sniff the air.

Yeech! I need a shower.

The first thing Kimishima did when he entered the abandoned clinic was to plop himself on the nearest sofa and fell fats asleep. This left Cherise alone to bring in her stuff, but she didn't really mind. Then, after she brought in the last back, she suddenly felt a familiar glomp at her side. She smiled, however. “Hello, Kanami.”

“I knew you'd be back, Cherise-san. What's all this?”

“The groceries I promised to bring with me, though I really only brought a third of what was on my list. Do you mind helping me make breakfast?”

Kanami's smiled broadened. “You bet! We'll surprise everyone.”

“Okay then. Now, first we need to put the cold foods away, and then we'll start cooking.” Cherise suddenly paused. “Uh, after I use the bathroom.”

“Better use the one upstairs. The downstairs one is broken.”

Cherise made her way upstairs quietly to avoid waking the rest of the gang up. Up ahead of the bathroom, she spied Koga, still asleep, in the doorway to TK's room. She wanted to go and check on TK, but her bladder told her she couldn't wait for very long. First thing's first. Her hand reached for the doorknob…

Which turned by itself, and the door opened, though Cherise didn't have time to look up to see whom it was. The only thing she knew was that he was naked, and she was definitely sure it was a HE.

“Ah, that felt goo-. GAAH!!!”

When the door suddenly slammed loudly and the lock clicked behind it, Cherise finally looked up, her face bright pink. Her legs moving on their own, she found herself backing into the wall, her eyes fixated on the door.

Was that… I just saw…

No longer needing to use the toilet, Cherise quickly went back downstairs and joined Kanami in the kitchen. “Okay, let's get started on some omelets. Where's your frying pan?”

“Is everything-?”

”Yes. Perfect. Frying pan. Please.”

Deciding not to inquire any further, Kanami want to the lower cupboards and dug around for the largest frying pan she had stashed away. I'll never understand grown-ups.

Koga woke up after getting a rude kick in his side. “Wha? Wha?! Oh, morning, Kazuma-.”

“A fine guard you are, Koga,” Kazuma snapped, pointing into the room. “Look! Anybody missing?”

Seeing the empty room, Koga said, “Oh yeah. No worries, he's in the bathroom taking a shower. I saw him go in. And don't worry, we hid all the sharp objects in the house from him, remember? And last I checked, nobody's ever died from drinking soap and/or shampoo.” Seeing the scowl on Kazuma's face, Koga sighed heavily and stood up. “Okay, we'll go double-check on him.”

The two walked over to the nearby bathroom door, which Koga tried to open, but it was locked. He banged his hand on the door loudly. “TK, open up!”

Forget it, Koga! I'm not coming out!

“TK,” Kazuma growled, “it's too early to be pulling this crap on us, now get outta there! It's the only working toilet left in the house!”

No way, Jose! I'm gonna stay in here and die from embarrassment, which will be any minute now.

Koga and Kazuma exchanged puzzled looks. This was a new approach for TK: dying from embarrassment. However, before they could ask what he was talking about, a heavenly odor caught their attention. Whoever was cooking breakfast, it smelled wonderful. “Just come out and get downstairs, kid! Breakfast must be ready because we can smell it out here.”

The two headed downstairs followed by Dearka, who seemed to be lead on by the aroma as well. Entering the kitchen, they found Kanami setting the table while Cherise was finishing up the last of breakfast on the stove. “Morning, everyone,” Kanami said politely. “We're just about ready.”

“Smells great,” Dearka commented. “Uh, Where's TK?”

“Upstairs. He's locked himself in the bathroom trying to die from embarrass-.” Kazuma was cut off as Cherise was making “eeping” noises as she nearly dropped the last omelets out of the pan, her face still pink. Suddenly, he and Koga understood the situation, looking at each other and nodding slowly.

Dearka gave them a strange look. “Okay, what's up now?” Koga whispered into his ear, his expression changing form shocked to understanding. Smiling, he said, “So, did you like what you saw, Che-.”

Koga and Kazuam moved away as Dearka was hit square in the face with the very frying pan Cherise had been using. “Owowowowwowow! Hot, hot, hot, HOT!!”

“This is why we kept our big mouths shut,” Kazuma stated as he pealed the pan off of his friend.

“Imgoingoutsideabit,” Cherise quickly stammered as she raced out the back door.

Kazuma sighed, placing the pan in the sink. “Koga, go get TK outta the bathroom. Break down the door if you gotta. Come on, Dearka, we gotta put aloe stuff on your face before you look like something out of a horror story. Kanami, would you please go after Cherise and then wake Kimishima so he can join us?”

“This is no way to start the day, lemme tell ya,” Koga grumbled loudly as everyone left the kitchen. “TK, GET OUTTA THERE OR I'LL KICK THE DOOR DOWN AND YOU WITH IT!”

**************

Due to Koga's “negotiating,” TK finally had left the bathroom. However, he immediately returned to his room, where he put on fresh clothes and hid under his blanket. Koga had tried to convince him that there was nothing wrong, but TK refused to leave his room in fear of what Cherise would do to him. Finally, Koga gave up and left, promising to save TK some of breakfast.

How the hell could I have done such a thing?! I flashed a girl! I'm glad it wasn't Kanami, other wise I'd be in the hospital by now courtesy of the guys, but did it have to be Cherise?! She's going to beat me within an in of my life, with tape measure and anything else not nailed down.

There was a sudden knock at the doorway, and then came the last voice TK ever wanted to hear at that moment. “Guess who?”

TK froze, still hidden under his blanket. It was Cherise. Just keep quiet, TK. Maybe she'll go away if you don't make a sound. You're not hiding under a blanket; you're an oddly-shaped pile of clothes. This wishful thinking faded when his stomach gave out a low growl. …Maybe she didn't hear that. He heard footsteps moving closer to him, and he shut his eyes tightly. I'm not here, I'm not here!

“Now, where could he be? A-HA!”

Feeling the blanket pulled off of him, TK took one look at Cherise, who had the blanket in one hand and something else in the other, and he leapt back. Quickly, he began bowing on his knees like crazy, repeating “I'm sorry” over and over.

“TK, stop it! I feel bad enough as it is.”

Now TK looked right at Cherise. “YOU feel bad? I'm the one who flashed you.”

Once more, Cherise's face went pink. “Well… Not intentionally. Besides, I'm the one who…. Peeked.”

It was then TK fully realized that Cherise was even there in front of him, and out of her uniform. “Um, why are you back out here?”

“Told you I'd be seeing you again, didn't I? Back at the medical camp?”

“And I thought you were joking, and Kanami, too, saying you kissed me.”

“You mean, you don't remember? Then again, you were passing out when did, so, of course you might have forgotten or not notice.”

“Then it's true?!”

“Yeah, but don't ask me why I did. Maybe I did it because… well, I did knock you out. Maybe it was a small way to apologize for it. Oh, yeah! Here. Hurry, before it gets cold.” Cherise then knelt down beside TK and handed him a plate loaded with omelets. “I made it myself, with help from Kanami.”

It took a moment before TK finally took a bite of one of the omelets. “This is good,” he said, taking more bites. “Better than my mom's cooking.”

Cherise grinned with pride. “And there's more where that came from. I brought other foods for you guys to try while I'm here. And to answer your question, I'm on a new assignment: once a week, I come here for two days to see how you and Kanami are doing with those jokers you hang out with.”

Just then, Kimishima appeared from one side of the doorway. “Hey, that's an insult! Dearka and Koga are the jokers in this group-!” He was cut off as Kazuma's foot suddenly came down on him, pinning him to the floor, hard. Seconds later, Kazuma and the others appeared at the doorway, too.

“Kimishima, you idiot! We're supposed to be watching them in secret!”

“And I think you blew it for the rest of us, Kazuma.”

“Please don't mind us, Take-kun, Cherise-san. Go back to becoming boyfriend and girlfriend-! MMPH!”

”He he, little kids say the cutest things these days, don'tcha think?”

TK and Cherise looked at each other, nodded, and then faced the gang before taking a deep breath.

WILL YOU GUYS GET LOST AND LEAVE US ALONE?!?!

To be continued…
