Normally when one fell victim to genjutsu, it only made them live through their deepest fears. It was different for everyone: some would see their loved ones dying, others would be killing those loved ones, and some would find themselves dying because of spiders or heights… However, all they were, were illusions. They never actually happened and they never physically damaged the victim. For those cases, all it took were a few cups of peppermint, chamomile or mint tea and constant reassurances that they didn’t kill anyone, wouldn’t kill anyone, or wouldn’t die.
This case, however, was so different. There were no illusions and no fears being relived. His mind and psyche had been attacked. From what they managed to piece together from his rambles, he had endured three days worth of physical attacks in only a moment. Three days worth of pain in about three seconds. It was terrifying, and made her fearful of the once peaceful Uchiha.
If he could do something like that to Kakashi, who also had a Sharingan eye, what could he do to someone who didn’t have it?
As they healed his body of non-existent injuries, Kagome did her best to soothe his mind with the calming and relaxing teas. It was all she could do, as she had no powers or ability to slip into another’s mind and try to heal the damage done. Though she did feel useful. If not for the calming teas she could brew and infuse with her natural healing ability, they wouldn’t have managed to get him relaxed and fixed up as soon as they did.
Yet, as she was getting ready to leave and get some answers from Sango and Miroku, Gai had rushed another victim in. Uchiha Sasuke. The second victim of the day of what Kakashi and those nearby called ‘Tsukiyomi’.
The next three hours were a repeat of the previous three. Only the damage seemed to be worse to Sasuke, as they quickly found out that instead of receiving three days worth of pain, he relived the night of his clan’s massacre and all the pain and hatred that came with it. Kagome found herself empathizing with the poor boy. The events that caused her to head back to Demon Country were just as tragic as the losses he had suffered. His story was so similar to Sango’s that she couldn’t help but feel empathic.
Dusk had already fallen by the time she stepped out of the Konoha Hospital causing her to shiver. While her hair and the rest of her body were no longer damp, all she had covering herself was the bathing robe from earlier. She rubbed her hands up and down her arms, trying to get some warmth into them and to keep from shivering.
She was about to become a kunoichi again that’s why she couldn’t go around showing such weakness. Her time spent in Demon Country had done nothing but hinder her progress as a ninja, but she didn’t regret it. She was terrified to think about how she might have grown up if she stayed in Konoha, allowing her bitterness and helplessness to fester.
A warm hand pressed against her back and began leading her down the street, much to her surprise. For once, he didn’t startle her as she had become better at sensing his unique aura.
“Hello Kouga-kun… Off-duty for the night or have I caused trouble again?” she teasingly asked.
She could hear him grin wolfishly underneath the rat mask he wore. “You’ve gotten better. I remember when I used to be able to sneak up on ya and steal you away.”
The family he came from, the Nakamura Clan, was distantly related to the Inuzuka Clan and the Nishimura Clan that Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru belonged to. The Nakamura Clan was more closely related to the Inuzuka Clan and the Nishimura Clan. As such, any member belonging to the Nakamura Clan like Kouga, entered into a pact at birth with ookami. The pact was very similar to the Aburame Clan pacts and instead of having a familiar, they took on the very characteristics of the wolves. Kouga boosted faster speed, quick healing, enhanced sight and hearing, wolf claws and a tail. The Nishimura Clan made similar pacts, but with inu. Which explained the exotic looks and enhanced smell of Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru.
Kagome chuckled, “And that would always get Inuyasha angry and start a fight between you two.”
He sighed heavily, “Those were some good times between us… Haven’t had a good spar since then.”
In an attempt to lighten the mood, Kagome poked him in the side, “You still haven’t answered my question, Kouga-kun.”
“I figured you’d need help finding your way over to Sango’s to get some clothes,” Kagome resisted the urge to wrap her arms around herself as she felt Kouga look her over. “Though, I think I’d rather take you back to my place… Ow! I was just kidding, Kagome!”
“Pfft,” Kagome stomped ahead, “Teasing my foot! You haven’t changed at all.”
Instead, she lived in a simple four-room apartment that had enough room for a few people to be in it without it seeming crowded. Artifacts and scrolls from her clan were adorned throughout the rooms creating a comfortable, old-world feel. It was better than most other apartments that boasted only one room. As ninja were hardly in Konoha for long periods, they were hardly anything more than sleeping quarters.
It made Kagome feel unbelievably homesick. It reminded her of her hometown in Demon Country. Everything had an old feel to it, and each home was luxurious as Sango’s. Her own home was strewn with similar artifacts along with decorative ornaments. She wondered what was still left in her old apartment that she once shared with Kikyou.
Miroku and Shippou were already waiting for her and Kouga with Sango. Only Kouga was still in his ANBU gear, but inside the safety of Sango’s apartment, he removed the mask. After seeing her friends in only their ANBU gear since she arrived, it was strange to see them looking like normal ninja. And looking so similar to how they did as teenagers. They only difference was that they were older and their eyes held sorrow and maturity they didn’t before. Kagome supposed she looked the same as they.
Kagome sighed and sat down with them. Deciding to cut through all the small talk she didn’t want at the moment, she said, “Uchiha Sasuke was brought in a few hours ago by Maito. He was suffering in much the same way as Hatake-senpai. Will you guys explain what happened with Itachi now?”
Everyone looked away, lost in their own thoughts. They were probably trying to figure out where to begin. Kagome made it easier on them, “I already know Itachi killed his clan almost five years ago now. I overheard it from most of the medic-nin. What I want to know is what happened? The last time I saw Itachi, he was a sweet, polite boy who hated killing. Of course, he was, like, six or seven, but still… What happened to make him change so much?”
“To tell you the truth, Kagome-sama,” Miroku said with the same calmness he possessed as a child, “no one knows. While he wasn’t the most skilled Uchiha, he was still a prodigy. He became an ANBU Captain at thirteen, and soon after killed his cousin. Or so everyone believes. Not long after, he slaughtered the entire clan, save for his little brother. Today was the first time since then that he’s been back in Konoha.”
Shippou spoke up, “I heard from Gai that him and his partner were looking for Naruto. They want his… well, you know… And Sasuke went looking for Naruto, hoping to save him and kill his brother.”
Sango and Kagome shared a long understanding look. Sango knew the pain of losing an entire clan within a night. Much like Sasuke, Sango also held a long-standing pledge that she would avenge her clan and kill the one who killed them. Everyone in her living room made the same pledge, but for different reasons. The same man who killed Sango’s clan also gave Miroku’s family their deadly kekkai genkai, killed Kagome’s sister, helped kill off most of Kouga’s clan, and killed off Shippou’s two favorite sensei and parent-like figures, Rin and Sesshoumaru.
Kagome looked down at the floor they were sitting on and shook her head. “I can’t believe people can change so much over ten years. I’m almost scared to think about what else has changed for the worst…”
Kouga and Shippou wrapped an arm around Kagome, squeezing her between them. While they may not get along much, they always put aside their differences for Kagome. To Kouga, she was a great friend, and to Shippou, she was the older sister he never had.
“Don’t worry, Kagome-chan!” Shippou smiled brightly at her, “Not everything’s as bad as that! The Inuzuka clan’s actually put out a mutt that’s not half-bad.”
“Tch,” Kouga scoffed, “he’s still flea-ridden.”
Sango chuckled, “You only say that because he’s in a pact with a dog. If he had a wolf for a partner, we all know you’d be singing a different tune.”
“Damn straight! Only wolves can be trusted, not those wimpy little mutts!”
“Says you, dog-breath,” Shippou mumbled beneath his breath, causing Kagome to giggle.
Kouga immediately turned to Shippou, “What was that?”
Shippou grinned mischievously, “I said your breath smells like dog!”
As expected, Kouga lunged for Shippou, only for Miroku’s shakujo to meet his head. From next to Kouga, Shippou snickered until Miroku hit him with shakujo as well. “Play nice now, children.”
Though she first thought it was going to be dull and hard to get through the days, she found a distraction. Surprisingly, it was because of Kakashi. He just didn’t know she ‘borrowed’ a couple certain books from him.
While the titles didn’t catch her attention, she still picked them up from his belongings and thumbed through them. It only took her a moment to realize that Icha Icha Violence was the first book, and Icha Icha Paradise was the second part.
It took her a week to finish reading the first part since she didn’t dare take home his books. While she was reading them, she was a thief. She laughed and was brought to near tears as she read the action-packed adventures of Naruto in Violence. Though she didn’t usually go for action-packed books, she was thoroughly intrigued by that book. The Naruto in the book seemed so familiar and likable. When she reached the end, she was surprised to find out it had been written by Jiraiya. Which is when she realized it read more like Jiraiya’s autobiography.
As she put down the first book, she picked up the second expecting more action and adventures by Naruto. Only she ended up being thrown-off balance as it read more like a trashy romance novel. Before she reached the first romance part in Paradise, she had almost forgotten Jiraiya’s famed title as the ‘Super Pervert.’
Despite it being filled with romance and sex, Kagome couldn’t put it down. Romance novels were the guilty pleasure of so many women, and from the details he put in it, he was also hoping to market to men too.
“I didn’t know Miroku had rubbed off on you that much, Kagome-san,” Kakashi’s only visible eye crinkled when she jumped.
A deep red blush covered Kagome’s face at having been caught red-handed reading the perverted sequel to Icha Icha Violence. She fumbled for words before taking a steadying breath, “Well, there was nothing else to do while watching over Sasuke-san and you, Hatake-senpai. Though I never took you to be a romance reader.”
“And I’m not surprised to find out that you are, Kagome-san. Though you should know better than to go through other people’s belongings otherwise you might lose a hand.”
She brushed off his warning with a flippant wave, “You know I was surprised at this book… I was expecting something filled with more action and suspense like the first one, not all the… the… well…” She trailed off, not wanting to say just what was in the book.
“All the sex?” Kakashi looked at her strangely, not believing she was being a bashful academy student at the mere three-letter word. He quickly grinned underneath his mask at seeing her blush deepen. It was the first time since they first met that she blushed from embarrassment instead of anger. “Is someone still a-…”
His playful question was cut off as she threw the book at his face. She crossed her arms in petulant annoyance when he managed to catch the book. “If you’re well enough to talk and move like that, then I guess you’re ready to be released. I’ll go let your nurse know!”
His deep chuckles chased her out of the room as her avoidance of his unasked question was enough of an answer. It just figured that someone as pure-hearted and innocent as Kagome was still untouched. At least he finally had something to tease her with.
As Kagome stepped out into the hallway of the hospital, she found the place a flurry of activity. It hadn’t been this busy for two weeks, and Kagome dreaded the thought of someone else being hurt. Part of her didn’t even want to know what the cause of the frenzied activity was.
Yet, she squashed that part of herself and caught the attention of the nearest nurse. She, at least, had to let someone know about Kakashi’s improved condition. “Excuse me, but patient Hatake Kakashi is awake and alert.”
The nurse nodded her head, “I’ll send in a doctor to check his condition.”
Gathering her courage, Kagome asked her next question, “Could you also tell me why everyone’s in such a hurry?”
“Jiraiya-sama has returned with Tsunade… Apparently, she’s accepted the position of Hokage.”

Despite how renown the Himura Clan had been decades ago, Sango lived in a modest apartment. While it was larger than most other apartments occupied by ninja, she did have the money to afford better accommodations. And while she could have continued living in the old Himura complex, she refused to. There were far too many memories there for her to be at peace.Instead, she lived in a simple four-room apartment that had enough room for a few people to be in it without it seeming crowded. Two weeks managed to pass by quickly. Perhaps it was because there was nothing to do, or maybe it had to do with the fact that everyone was waiting for Jiraiya and Naruto to return with Tsunade.
