Zabuza was defeated after a grueling battle, but Kakashi sustained many injuries, forcing Team Seven to stay at Tazuna's house until he was well enough to travel. The team was introduced to Tsunami, Tazuna's daughter, and Inari, Tsunami's temperamental son.

Chapter 3

 

Kagome sighed. Of all the chores available, why did I choose shopping?! Five people have tried to rob me! Five! If they really needed money, they should just ask, I would be happy to help. After all, Sesshou-nii gives me way too much money. But I guess they don't really expect me to give them anything even if they do ask.

Kagome felt sad at this last thought and vowed to help finish the bridge and liberate the Land of Waves, even if she had to stay behind. Meanwhile, she was doing the best she could to help the people. So far, she had given out a lot of money that she received from the academy and from her brother each month.

They probably anticipated that I would try to help anyone who came along. I really am too predictable.

Kagome had also used her Alice to control plants to grow vegetables and fruits for the local villagers. But it still wasn't enough. Poverty was still extremely widespread and it would continue to be that way until Gato's hold over the country was broken.

She walked back to Tazuna's home, which she had left at dawn before anyone had woken up. Kagome was greeted with open mouths from the boys and a venomous glare from Sakura. The reason for this reaction? Kagome had changed out of her fuku into a black fighting outfit. It was a Chinese-styled sleeveless dress with a skirt that had slits all the way up to her mid-thighs. She had on wearing black shorts and black finger-less gloves. There was a weapon pouch on either side of her hips and she was wearing the standard ninja sandals, except hers had long black ribbons that wrapped around her ankles.

“Uh, hi. I bought some groceries.” Said Kagome, a bit daunted by the others' reactions.

Naruto recovered first and jumped, yelling, “Wow Kagome, that outfit looks awesome on you! You should have worn that from the start.”

Kagome grinned at Naruto. “Why? Do you like that it's even more form-fitting than my uniform?”

Naruto blushed and stammered, “Uh, N-no, it's j-just that I-I thought that it would be easier t-to fight in.”

Kagome laughed at his reaction and waved her hand at him. “I was joking! I knew what you meant. But I just couldn't resist teasing you! You are really kawaii when you're embarrassed.” This made Naruto blush even harder and he rubbed the back of his neck in an embarrassed way. While this was going on, no one but Sakura noticed that Sasuke was glaring a hole in the side of Naruto's head.

Sakura became even more jealous than she already was. What is Sasuke jealous of Naruto? He's never jealous of anyone else, at least not when it's because of a girl. What's so special about Kagome?

After Team Seven had eaten, they went into the forest to train. Kakashi-sensei set the genins to climbing trees with their chakra. Kagome made it up the farthest the fastest, earning loud praises from Naruto and glares from Sakura. The others weren't nearly as successful. Sakura was pretty good at controlling her chakra, but she didn't have very much of it to use. Naruto and Sasuke were the worst, but they had more chakra to practice with. Of course, they immediately turned it into a contest.

This training continued for several days, with Kagome and Sakura guarding Tazuna because they had already mastered it. Sasuke was also able to master controlling his chakra and joined the girls. Unfortunately, Naruto was still having difficulties controlling his huge store of chakra, so he was still going at it.

A few days after starting the training, Naruto was still practicing, but soon fainted from exhaustion. He stayed in the forest all night and just slept on the ground.

The next morning, Naruto abruptly woke up when he was tapped on the shoulder. Huh? What happened? Where was that giant bowl of ramen? Ramen! Oh, wait, I remember now. I fell asleep in the forest.

After he completed this train of thought, which took about one second, he took a look at who had woken him up. It was a “girl” who looked to be about fifteen and was wearing a pink kimono.

“You shouldn't be sleeping in the forest, you might get sick.” “She” gently chided.

“Huh? What are you doing out here?” was Naruto's reply, not even bothering to answer the question.

“I was gathering herbs. See?” The girl held up a basket.

At the same time that this conversation was going on, the others had finally noticed that Naruto was missing.

“That Naruto! He probably got lost in the forest. There's no need to worry about him, let's just eat breakfast.” Was Sakura's view on this.

Sasuke just hn'ed and continued eating his food. Kagome was rather annoyed at her teammates' complete disregard for their other member and volunteered to look for him.

Chances are, he probably exhausted himself training and is now in the forest sleeping somewhere. I'd better go find him before he catches a cold. Now let's see, I'll just use my miko powers to locate his aura.

Kagome quickly found Naruto's distinct aura and sped towards him. She found him picking herbs with an older “girl”.

“Naruto! You should take better care of yourself, you'll catch a cold if you keep on sleeping outside.” Kagome bounded over to him with a mock look of despair. “If you get sick, I'll be stuck with no one to talk to. Sasuke is conversation-challenged and Sakura is obsessed with Sasuke and hates me!”

“Sorry Kagome, I'll try to be more careful from now on.” Said Naruto with his hand rubbing his neck.

“By the way, what are you doing? These look like healing herbs.” Asked Kagome curiously.

“I'm helping this girl pick them! She said that they were for someone very important to her.” Naruto pointed at the “girl” with the basket.

Kagome was amused. “Uh Naruto, that's not a girl. He's a boy.” Hearing this, Naruto immediately jumped up with a horrified look on his face. “But he's prettier than Sakura!”

Kagome giggled. “I have to agree with that statement. By the way, what's your name?” She asked the question of the fifteen-year old boy.

“My name is Haku. How did you know that I was male? Most people can't tell.”

Kagome shrugged. “I thought it was obvious. Even if you look a bit feminine, you're still obviously a guy. I guess I'm just more observant than most.” She smiled at Haku, which caused his heart to beat just a bit faster. “Why don't I help you pick the herbs? How are you going to use them?”

“Well, I was planning to make a tea out of them.” Haku was surprised that someone would so readily agree to help, much less two in the same day.

Kagome thought for a minute before asking, “Are this person's injuries internal or on the outside?”

“They are mostly on the outside.” Haku was confused about why Kagome was asking questions about Zabuza's (which is not known to the others) injuries.

“Well, it might be a bit more helpful to add a pinch of stinging nettles. It should help with this person's injuries and restore some energy.” Suggested Kagome.

Haku was surprised and touched by Kagome's kindness. She must be a very compassionate person if she is willing to help a complete stranger. From her outfit, it's obvious that she's a shinobi. Many shinobi wouldn't care less about others. I think that she would protect everyone no matter what.

“Well, I'd better be going. Thank you for your help.” Haku stood up and smiled gently.

“No problem, we're happy to be of service!” Naruto grinned. Haku walked away just as Sasuke arrived on the scene to tell them that Kakashi-sensei said that Naruto could help guard Tazuna. As they walked back toward Tazuna's house, they heard screams from the bridge.

Kagome took command. “Naruto, can you go check on Tsunami and Inari? Sasuke and I will go to the bridge.” Naruto and Sasuke nodded and split up.
