Part 4 – The Storm’s Approach (Cont)
Kouga stopped, looking to Sesshomaru who had remained quiet, his one hand resting on his knees. Kenshin noticed only now that the man, or youkai as they had called themselves, had only one arm. “I believe my friend has something to add to my story.”
Sesshomaru looked at Kouga with a level gaze, his expression never changing. Finally he turned his eyes to Kenshin and began to speak in that low and hypnotic voice. It was like the noise a rattlesnake made prior to striking. “I was the next to learn that Yuki was not my brother’s child.”
Inu Yasha waved as Kagome disappeared over the rim of the well. Yuki ran up and peeked in. She turned and looked at him. “Where Mother go?”
Inu Yasha walked up to ruffled her hair, making her giggle. “To her other home. She’ll be back soon, don’t worry.”
Yuki slipped her hand into his. “Yuki go too?”
He looked at the girl beside him. She had grown very quickly. She was almost as tall as Kagome but she was only 15 winters old. Though it seemed she had stopped growing. “No Yuki, you have to stay here and keep me out of trouble.”
This brought another giggle from her. “Father is always good. O pretty!”
Yuki let go of his hand to chase a butterfly that flew by. The wind brought Inu Yasha an unexpected scent, “Sesshomaru?”
He turned to greet his brother as he exited the forest on the other side of the well. “What brings you here Sesshomaru?”
“I must speak with your mate.”
“She’s—“ Inu Yasha stopped as he heard cries from the village. “Yuki?”
The girl was no where to be seen. His heart lept in his chest as stomach sank. Ignoring Sesshomaru’s concerned question, the hanyou took off at full speed for Kaede’s village. As he got closer he could smell blood. Inu Yasha entered the village in time to see the fifth villager fall, with Yuki’s fangs buried in his neck. She looked up as he called her name. Her teeth were stained with the blood running from the corners of her mouth. She came at him but suddenly leapt to the side as a man appeared from around the side of a house, swinging his sickle. “No!” he screamed running between the villager and Yuki.
Yuki was now trapped in the junction of three huts. Her eyes blazed with fire, snarled like a caged beast, as she slashed at him, no recognition in her face. He could hear the other men telling him to get out of the way, that they would take care of this monster.
“She’s not a monster,” he said, remembering his own long ago pain at those words, “Yuki.”
She growled and swung at him again. He narrowly avoided getting her claws in his face. He grabbed her arms, pinning them to her side, innerly troubled that he could barely hold her. “Yuki, it’s Father!” he cried over her screams.
She struggled harder and slipped from his grasp, striking at the nearest human. Sesshomaru appeared from nowhere, slipping his arm around her waist and holding her to him as she kicked and screamed. Seizing his chance, Inu Yasha took her head in his hands, forcing her to look him in the eyes. “Stop this daughter, you are making Father angry.”
“Fa…Fatther?” she asked, her struggles ceasing, the red slowly left her eyes. “Father mad at Yuki?”
“Not if you give me a hug,” he replied as she reached for him.
Sesshomaru let her go and she buried her face in Inu Yasha’s hair, sobbing. He looked at his elder brother, who gave him a questioning look. Inu Yasha merely motioned for Sesshomaru to follow. They left the village.
When they had once again entered the cool forest, the silver haired youkai finally asked his question. “What just happened?”
Inu Yasha put Yuki down so she could run ahead, as she often liked to do. “Is that a good idea?” Sesshomaru asked, “Considering what just happened?”
Inu Yasha nodding, keeping an eye on the girl, “She’s never lost control more than once a day. Yuki is not my child…she is Naraku’s.”
Inu Yasha said nothing more, that statement explained everything. Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Why did you not kill her when she was born?”
“Kagome did not think that she would be evil like him.”
“Why not dispose of her now then?”
“We can’t. Just look at her Sess,” he nodded toward Yuki who had stopped and was rolling in the grass, giggling happily. She reminded Sesshomaru of Rin when she was small. A smile came unbidden to his lips as he thought of his mate, but he understood what Inu Yasha meant. He had never seen that side of his niece before and he too cared for the child as she was now.
“How old is the child?”
“15 human years,” Inu Yasha replied.
They had caught up to Yuki, who was sitting up. She smiled up at them with the brilliant smile that only a child has. She held her up her hands and Inu Yasha lifted her into his arms. “Yuki love Father.”
He held her tightly. “And I love you too.”
Sesshomaru watched the two and sighed. He could feel that something bad was going to happen but he didn’t know what. Suddenly he remember what he had came for. “Brother, when your mate returns, Rin would like to see her. She is worried.”
Inu Yasha chuckled as he swung Yuki around. “First births always are frightening. I will send Kagome to her when she gets back.”
Sesshomaru nodded his thanks and then silently took his leave.
“Both Sesshomaru and I came to the same conclusions seperatly. We both knew that Yuki’s strength would only continue to grow. One day we happened to meet and we agreed that should Inu Yasha and Kagome need us to restrain the girl, we would lend our strength to theirs. Mirouku and Sango would not learn of Yuki’s problem until the day Kagome died.”
