Part 2. Usagi's P.O.V.
' Ever wake up and have a feeling that something strange was going to happen to you? '
Her alarm clock had gone off five minutes ago and Usagi knew that she should get out of bed very soon before she rolled over and feel asleep again. And be late for school like every day of her ten years and counting of school ever since that fateful day her mother woke up to drop her off at kindergarten. Kindergarten had been fun. Pretty much like every day of her first six years of life, only now it had a schedule and lots of kids to play with. Some fun, some mean. Especially a cute, ten year old little boy with raven hair, blue eyes, and had called her meatball head. But Usagi had simply kicked the boy in the shines and thus started the long ' Usagi verses Mamoru war.'
' Baka still calls me 'Meatball head. Maybe I should kick him somewhere else instead of the shines, ' Usagi thought with a wicked little smile, pondering over that indulgence she had gotten away with, with her folks and teachers when she was younger and cute. A young lady doesn't kick boys.
' When they're jerks, they oughta, ' the blonde thought, her gaze lingering on the wall opposite of her bed. Painted just the faintest shade of rose, not a sickening Barbie tm Pink, adorned with an anime calendar with the month of May on display, and some random fantasy poster that wasn't anime, but something imported out of Europe she had bought at the mall with Naru a few years ago. Usagi rolled onto her back and gazed up at her window, the sunlight shaded behind the thin white curtains. Something was pulling at her. She closed her eyes, having no fear of falling back asleep, and the feeling grew stronger as she concentrated on it. Her fingers twitched as her body threatened to act on the pulling sensation.
" Something's tugging at my soul, " Usagi murmured to herself. There came a pounding on her closed bedroom door. Her mother.
" Usagi! Get up and get ready for school or you'll be late again! "
" Alright, Mom! " Usagi called out, surprising her mother that her daughter was fully awake and the blonde tossed back the covers. She made a mad dash for the bathroom in typical Usagi fashion to wash her face and brush her hair. She almost collided into Sammy, who was surprised to see his sister up earlier then usual, exiting the family bath and re-entered her bedroom to dress. Breakfast was consumed in a less hurried pace and Usagi was out the door, not even forgetting her lunch or schoolbag, all the while still feeling that sensation that she had to do something besides going to school on a school day.
Usagi paused outside on the sidewalk of her doorway and chewed on her bottom lip, thinking to herself as precious non-late for school moments hurried by. Being a huge fan and consumer of magical, shoujo mangas, Usagi wondered if this was the start of such a journey for herself?
' Wouldn't that be cool? To just wake up one day and be given magical powers? To start on some kind of quest that'll change my life? ' Usagi thought with a grin on her face. Her smile faded as she continued on with that thought, ' But nothing in the sense of Yu Watase's works. I do not want my maidenhood in jeopardy of gorgeous and tragic generals; bitchy so called best friends, or psychotic, power hungry families. '
Nakago: * Glares at author * Onna…
Purple Mist: Sorry, Nakago-kun, but you are gorgeous and tragic and we all know you wouldn't have listened to that little blonde bitch anyway.
Nakago: * Shudders * I can't believe Tamahome had a child with that…female.
Purple Mist: Miaka's okay, kinda. * To all NakagoxTamahome yaoi fans * I wouldn't mind of seeing what their kid would have looked like. ^_^!!
Nakago: ~_~;;;
Slapping her cheeks in a wake up fashion with both hands, Usagi broke herself from such thoughts and headed towards her school. Then a warm wind brushed passed her from behind and Usagi turned in that direction. She had heard something on that wind. Or thought she had. Something like a faint, sad voice calling to her. ' A voice from long ago and calling to her from through time… '
" Usagi! Hurry up or you're gonna be late for school! "
Usagi turned and saw Naru up ahead, waving at her to join the red head's side so they could walk, well run now, together to school and just make it before the gates closed after the last warning bell. Usagi looked behind her again to where the wind came. Turning to join Naru, another wind picked up, stronger, almost urgent this time and scattered a few loose maple leaves about her.
' Please… '
Usagi turned sharply. This time she knew she had heard someone calling to her. Someone needed her help. With a nod the blonde accepted her new fate and hurried down the street. Naru called out to her friend, but Usagi turned the corner and she was gone. And if the red head didn't hurry up, she would be late herself.
' Damn. You better tell me what's going on late, Usagi, ' Naru thought and hurried off to school.

Usagi paused when she reached a crosswalk to catch her breath right outside the Crown Arcade. She spotted Motoki through the glass and walked inside. She almost headed over to the Sailor V game before she corrected herself. Now wasn't the time for video games! Usagi walked right up to the fellow blond and surprised the young man, causing him to almost jump when he turned and found Usagi-chan standing before him with the most serious expression on her normal pretty and cheerful face. Why Mamoru picked on the shorter blonde was a mystery to him. Normally the brunette was much more mature then that.
" Usagi-chan, something I can help you with? " Motoki asked. He crossed his arms and gave her his best scolding older brother look, " Shouldn't you be in school? " ' Wow, Usagi cutting class? She doesn't hate school that much.'
" Motoki-kun, I need you to hold onto this. It'll get in my way, " she said, pressing her school bag into his hands. Again, using her shoujo manga references, Usagi knew off the top of her head that there was nothing she would need in what ever strange world she was heading into and the less personal stuff she had to worry about loosing, the better.
" Nani? "
" Arigato, " Usagi smiled when the young man took her school bag. She turned and left the Crown before he could ask her anything more and paused outside the doorway again.
Usagi drew in a deep breath, slowly released it, and closed her eyes, relaxing her body and focusing her senses. " Okay, I'm ready, " She murmured. Something warm and misty, causing her skin to tingle in a pleasant way, enclosed around her left wrist and tugged her down the street and further away from the Cross Road district. Usagi opened her eyes and gasped when she saw a white, almost see through, dragon like creature leading her. It's long tail that ended with violet scales and feathers were wrapped about her wrist. More of the same scales and feathers gathered about the creature's head and Usagi could see golden eyes looking straight ahead.
' Demon. This is a demon! ' Usagi thought to herself as it lead her through the crowded streets and towards a bus stop. Childhood tales of horrid and ugly demons that ate little girls who didn't eat all their vegetables to the adult animes were snake like demons seducing or molesting schoolgirls played into Usagi's mind as she stared at the little creature. All demons where something to fear and run away from seemed to be the general public opinion, but then there were animes and mangas where the demons were good guys and heroes too, so maybe this was a good demon? But this pretty little creature seemed more like a messenger or servant than anything else. ' What about it's master? ' The little demon coiled up around her arm at the bus stop and peered at her. There was no malice in those golden eyes, just an honest curiosity. Usagi smiled. The little demon was rather cute and she decided that perhaps all demons weren't something to fear. Besides, its master was probably the one calling her and Usagi knew the owner of that sad voice wouldn't harm her. It was a feeling and a hope.
As if reading her thoughts, a smile spread over the little demon's dragon like face and both turned to the bus when it pulled up to a stop. Climbing aboard Usagi stopped, needing to pay the bus the fee for the distance she had to take and peered at the creature for the information. It gestured to a district an hour from her neighborhood. Reaching into her pocket, Usagi froze when she remembered that her bus pass was in her school bag.
' Damn, ' she thought and almost jumped when money suddenly formed in her hand. Peering at the demon only the blonde could see it nodded at her, letting her know the money was its work.
" You gonna stand there all day? " The bus driver asked.
" Gomen, " Usagi murmured and dropped in the coins. She took a seat in the middle and stared out the window. After an hour filled with stops, Usagi climbed off the bus and turned to the demon wrapped around her arm. " Where to next? "
It uncoiled and pulled her up the street in an un-hurried pace till they came upon a temple. A quick glance at the name read Sunset Shrine and Usagi was led up the steps. A few people lingered about; some on their day off and no one took notice of a girl in a school uniform who was clearly supposed to be in school considering the morning hour.
' Wonder why I'm here? ' Usagi thought, peering around the place. She paused by a large and very old sacred Go-Shinboku God tree. A strong presence had been with this tree for many years a long time ago she mused and wondered briefly if this tree had anything to do with the demon wrapped around her arm?
" Demon! How dare you desecrate this sacred temple!? "
Usagi turned and gave a shriek as an elderly man came charging at her with sacred scrolls pinched between his index finger and thumb. She leaped away in time and the old man crashed comically onto the pathway. The few people buying shrine tokens or praying peered at the sudden scene.
" Crazy old care taker is at it again, " someone murmured to their friend.
' He must be able to see my demon guide. But I know it isn't evil so he must just assume all demons are, ' Usagi thought, peering down at the old man. Since he wasn't getting up right way, nor did he look able to anyway, Usagi stood up and allowed her guide to lead her to a mini shrine.
" Bone Eater's Well? " She read out loud and glanced at the demon in the corner of her eye, " Am I suppose to go in here? "
It nodded. Shrugging, Usagi made to enter the shrine when someone grabbed her arm. Turning she found the caretaker at her elbow.
" You mustn't go in there! " He glared at the demon around her arm,
" Demon, I command you to let this girl go! "
" You had better let me go before I start screaming, " Usagi hissed.
" I'm warning you, child, you mustn't enter that shrine. Horrid monsters will pop out and eat you! " He bellowed, his arms raised and hands locked in that 'camp fire horror story' gesture, looking quite foolish, and causing only everyone around then to stare again.
" Uh-huh, " Usagi remarked and entered the shrine. When he grabbed at her, catching her skirt to stop her, the blonde shrieked, turned on her heels, and smacked the elderly man away. " Pervert! "
Hurrying down the stairs before he could try anything, Usagi hooked one leg over the well's side and hoisted herself onto the edge, scrapping off a few of the hundred dozen scrolls, some torn, pasted all around it. Peering down into the darkness for a moment, the girl felt a little fear swell inside her that came from not knowing what was inside the darkness. It wasn't called the Bone Eaters' Well for nothing she mused. Deciding for her the demon around her arm pulled Usagi into the well and both were swallowed up by the darkness.
" Oh, crap! " Kagome's grandfather remarked when he found the well empty of both demon and the girl. " But I thought only Kagome or those with powers could travel through the well. …The demon! "
* - * - *
Usagi felt dislodgement in time and space sweep through her as she slowed in her falling and came to drift through the air in the well. Her guide was gone, having vanished the moment the space around her changed from darkness to her lit up surroundings of a night's sky hued with blue and purple lights. Usagi turned onto her back, her long hair and skirt trailing up as she floated downwards. She couldn't see the entrance to the well anymore.
" Where am I going? Demon guides and now weird gateways. What's next? "
As is to answer, something reached out and grabbed her left hand again, turning her over. This time Usagi saw no tiny dragon like demon, but a young woman, years more mature then herself and peering up at her. The woman wore an overflowing white silk kimono with a violet obi, her feet were bare, and her long, dark hair was free and floating about them. Her skin was light like Usagi's and her eyes were a light rose color that held many years of wisdom, kindness, and grief. The woman reached out and grasped Usagi's other hand, pulling her down so they could face each other equally with their legs tucked comfortably under them.
" You were the one who's been calling me, " Usagi said, realization dawning on her.
" I am, " the woman answered.
" Why? "
" This well has become a link between your time and mine. My time is the Sengoku period. "
" Oh, wow! Then are you some kind of ghost or demon? " Usagi asked.
" I'm the murdered soul of a demon, yes. " An amused smile spread over her face. " Does that frighten you, human? That priest went through great pains to keep you from me. " Usagi shook her head. " Good. I sent one of my servants to find me a strong soul, human or demon, of one who might help me. "
" Help you? How? " The demoness study Usagi for a moment before closing her eyes, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. That gave the blonde the sense that her story was a sad one.
" I am a demon, yes, and like you believe, not all demons are evil. I was one who was gifted with the powers of healing and regeneration. Humans and demons alike came for my treatment and I aided them all, taking no sides. I lived peacefully in my palace with my servants and a few humans I was teaching my knowledge of medicine when they came in search of it. Because I took no sides in those I treated, several humans in a village that lived by grew to hate me because I treated demons that were known to devour humans. I lacked powers to defend myself or even the demonic strength that every other demon seems to possess… " The demoness' hands tightened their grip around Usagi's with her suppressed grief and anger as tears ran down her face as memories of her death replayed within her mind. " The humans stormed my palace, pillaging and burning my home, killing the ones who had come to me for treatment, humans and demons alike, my pupils, and beheaded me before the ones who survived the attack. My body was thrown in this well and the murderers left unpunished. I… I want… "
Tears ran down Usagi's cheeks, the grief of the one before her touching her very soul. This was no trick of any cruel demon in search of a human kill or other malice that stories she had read or those of the closed minded had often tried to inflict within herself. She reached out and pulled the demoness into an embrace, trying to comfort her in a motherly manor she had learned from her own mother.
" Is there anything I can do? " Usagi asked.
The demon looked up at her and nodded. She wiped the tears away with the edge of one of her kimono sleeves. " I was hopping that someone with power and strength would avenge me, my friends, and patients and carry on my work. "
" Y-you mean me? " Usagi asked. ' Wow. This is kind of like one of my mangas. ' " But I have no super powers or anything like that. "
The demoness shook her head. " Yes, you do. You were someone else in another life, someone with great power and strength. If you were made more away of this power, you could focus it, maybe even give it a solid form as a crystal. As for physical strength, find a strong demon and absorb theirs. Or bond with them so they might share it with you, if you can find such a noble demon. Perhaps there is one… "
" I was someone in another life? " Usagi asked.
The demoness nodded, " Yes, from the royal bloodline of the goddess Serenity. You were reborn through a human mother, but it's there. It just needs bringing out. If you would help me, I would reward you and un-snare the bond that holds back who you really are. "
" And just up to this morning I thought I was a normal human girl. How I can help you? " Usagi asked. ' Is what she saying true? I don't feel very goddess like. '
" Would you let my soul merge with yours? Would you be willing to allow yourself to become both human and demon so that I can avenge myself and carry on what I was born for? My life was ended before it's time and I want it back, even if it wasn't the way it used to be. Please, will you help me? " The demoness asked.
" Human, goddess, and demon? That's quite a list, " Usagi remarked. She chuckled, " But if what you say is true, then I guess becoming part demon wouldn't make it so crowded in here. Will I still be me, as I am right now? "
" If we were to join you'd sense more of your goddess linage at night because of the moon, but during the day you'll be more or less of your normal self. You'll have all my knowledge, you won't hear my voice inside your head, probably have some of my quirks, and my servants will follow you as they had me. You'll have some of my memories that you will find helpful, but none of the night of my death. And I don't want you to. It haunts me enough, " the demoness explained.
Usagi nodded, " I think I can handle it. Then I will accept you and avenge you and those killed with you. "
The demoness smiled. " Thank you. " Usagi felt her eyes close as the demoness drew closer to her and the blonde knew nothing more.
* - * - *
Usagi woke up when a blade of grass tickled under the nose and she woke up with a sneeze. Sitting up and rubbing her nose, Usagi looked around. She in a clearing just outside some woods. The familiar Bone Eaters' Well stood un-shrined before her. With a little shiver, Usagi rose, dusted off her yukata, and turned to walk away from it. She paused.
'Yukata?' Usagi found that her school uniform had been changed into an elegant while silk yukata with a light violet obi. She smiled at the pretty gift and continued on her way. More of the dragon like demons flew down from the sky and joined her side, ready to serve or aid their mistress if needed. Usagi recognized the one from before, it was slightly larger then the others and had wrapped itself around her left arm in a familiar fashion.
" What do you wish, Mistress? " It asked, speaking for the first time.
" To find the old palace and restore it so I might have a home in this time when I come to stay here during my visits, " Usagi replied, petting the now solid demon, " but first I would like to find a strong demon, one with a good soul, and see about this share bond your late mistress spoke of. Maybe gain a powerful alley as I gather her enemies are not dead and could harm me if I'm not careful. I have yet to find this power she said I have inside me. "
" Wait for nightfall. The moon will be full and you'll be able to find under the guide of your linage, " her servant advised.
Usagi nodded and blushed when her stomach growled. She looked at her companion with a sheepish expression over her face.
" Time must have been disordered in the well, but my stomach knows it's time to eat. Know any place where I can find some free lunch? I don't have any money with me, left my wallet back home in the future and with Motoki, but I doubt anyone in this time would take it, " Usagi said.
" I'm sure we can find you something, " the little demon chuckled.
* - * - *
The moon was indeed full, as Ru-kun had said it would be. Usagi, needing to call the apparent leader of her servants something less ruder then hey you all the time had settled for naming him after her best friend and shortening it to Ru-kun. It didn't seem to mind. The others were gone, retiring to where ever it was they went to when their mistress didn't require their services. Only Ru-kun remained and watched from a distance as its mistress became more aware of her past self and her demon powers coming to show, reacting to her born with powers. Her very presence seemed to change in a marriage of demon and goddess reborn human and the air tingled with her different powers coming into harmony with each other.
When night fell, Usagi changed her direction and headed towards the lands she knew that were claimed by a powerful demon lord called Sesshoumaru. She was heading towards the lake that lay hidden by the untouched forest to help bring out her untouched power and knew Lord Sesshoumaru wouldn't come after her for trespassing on his lands if he felt she was trying to claim it. He might come after her sensing her human half, but it was a small risk she would have to take in using his lake. Usagi could sense the demon was home for a rest, something he and the child he kept with him needed. Usagi smiled to herself as the lake came into view. Who would have thought Lord Sesshoumaru would have taken in a human child? Much less save one's life. Though the demoness had been contained to the Bone Eaters' well after her death, news and gossip reached to her from her servants. That, and the sword he loathed, that healed and could bring back life, whispered to her soul. Even now. A sword with a will and healing abilities speaking to another being of healing as they sometimes did.
Usagi smiled. Perhaps Sesshoumaru wasn't the Sesshoumaru that he wanted the world to think he was. Not completely. Would he be a demon she could bond with? Perhaps the handsome demon lord needed a female companion who wasn't a child. Usagi blushed.
" Now I know that's my other self speaking, " she said with an embarrassed school girl's giggle and decided to move on. ' Gods, I'm only sixteen for crying out loud! '
Coming to the lake's edge, Usagi glanced it over and nodded her head, pleased with what she saw. The trees were parted wide enough so that the moon would reach her here. The blonde stepped onto the water, not sinking as she walked to the very middle and paused. Ru-kun came to take perch on a willow's branch that dipped into the water and watched as Usagi closed her eyes and started concentrating. The air around her tingled with her demonic powers, taking on a light violet hue that those with the ability could see and the water rippled deeply against its surface.
' Please, Serenity, as I recognize myself as one of your daughters, I ask you to help release the power of my linage. '
A stream of moonlight cascaded around the girl and she could feel her whole body grow warm. Her forehead wrinkled as flashes of what seemed to be of her past life played before her closed eyes. A white marble castle enclosed in a huge clear bubble, the Earth from far away, laughter of many people, parties and balls with masked party goers, preferred secret places to be alone, and last a beautiful fair woman whose face Usagi couldn't see. Was this Serenity?
' Mother? '
The warmth in her felt as if it was drawing up from everywhere in her body, coming to collect against her heart. Usagi opened her eyes and looked down at her reflection in the water. She seemed to glow white with an aura of violet around her, the two colors blending into each other in evidence of her inner harmony. Moonlight showered around her and looking up, the distant orbit seemed to be glowing brighter. Usagi looked down again at her reflection, fascinated with what she saw. Her powers had raveled her hair free, pulling the fair locks above her head and a crescent moon appeared on her forehead, shinning at her for a second before it vanished, taking with it the moonlight. Her powers' lights faded and Usagi's hair fell free down her back once again. Right against her heart she felt what had to be her power, not as warm as before, but if she concentrated on it enough, she could feel it.
" But the demoness was wrong about something, " Usagi murmured to herself, " My power can destroy as well as heal. It's a two-sided coin. "
Looking at herself, Usagi made a face at the state of her hair and started to smooth it out so she might pull it back into her usual buns. Sensing someone approaching her, Usagi wondered if it was Sesshoumaru? Had he sensed the build of power and decided to investigate? Coming closer, the presence felt like Sesshoumaru and demon, but it wasn't him. When the person stepped into view, stopping at the lake's shore, Usagi saw it wasn't Sesshoumaru. The demon was male, looked to be her age in appearance, and oh, was he handsome. Perfectly toned for his age under a deep red kimono with matching pants, waist length, moon white hair fell freely down to his back, maroon strips on each cheek told of a noble linage birth like herself, emotional golden eyes, and what seemed to be puppy ears peeking up through the moon locks gave him an adorable puppy boy look. He was also clearly a hanyou. The nameless one also seemed to be as surprised to see her, as Usagi was curious as to who he was?
When he opened his mouth to speak, someone else interrupted him.
" Hello, goddess! " Usagi smiled at that and her guest seemed to find his voice.
" W-who are you? " He asked. Oh, his voice was handsome. Still soft in his apparent youth that hinted at the baritone it would become.
" I am Usagi, " she replied, holding up her hand as she approached him. Her demon side was whispering to her, tugging at demon instincts that her human side was holding back, their first battle. After all, she was only in high school. But still, she couldn't deny this part of her new nature. Usagi picked up his scent, something husky with the scent of the woods and left her slightly breathless. What was his name?
" Inuyasha, " her handsome new companion replied, but Usagi wasn't aware that she had even voiced that thought. Then he was holding her hand, his warm, powerful body by hers.
" Inuyasha. " Usagi smiled when she spoke his name. She liked it, how it sounded, rolled off her tongue with ease. How fitting. Usagi thought that she had found a fellow demon she could bond with. Perhaps he would be sympathetic after hearing her story and help her. Would he mind if she was also human? Maybe not if he was hanyou and his hanyou senses would have easily detected her human scent by now. But now this close to Inuyasha, Usagi sensed that he wasn't as hanyou as he was suppose to be. What was happening to him?
" And I am Myouga the flea. Lord Inuyasha's trusted servant, " that other voice spoke up, but Usagi choose to ignore the owner. Her once focus was Inuyasha. Then the blonde sensed a fourth presence. It wasn't Ru-kun, who had retreated once Inuyasha appeared on the scene. Inuyasha also noticed the fourth and wrapped his arm around her. Usagi smiled, liking his instinct to protect her and concluded that Inuyasha had a good soul.
" Sesshoumaru, " he growled at the direction of where Ru-kun had once been.
