~Chapter One~
Scent
The slow dripping was starting to grate on Kagome’s fragile nerves. If InuYasha saw her like this, he would have a conniption fit.
She sat in her bathtub, a thin sheen on blood slowly separated from the warm water that filled the tub. Her tears had long since stopped and though her hands began to prune, she still felt as grimy and dirty as she had when she left Sengoku Jidai*. Every breath she took required more effort than the last. Her chest constricted in inexorable pain every time she breathed in, but she didn't mind, instead, she welcomed it.
Her pain swept her away from the memory of Kohaku and the anguish reflected clearly in her best friend’s eyes. Naraku was still out there, but the last attempt of the InuYasha-tatchi* had cost them Sango’s heart.
Naraku had finally grown weak. Kagome was at last able to retrieve four of the six shards that he had cheated from them. With only two shards, he must have panicked, ordering Kohaku (whom Sango had been pleading with) to rip open his own back with his kusarikama* . Sango could only watch as he fell into a bloody heap before her.
“Kohaku! Onegai*!” Sango sobbed almost hysterically before Miroku arrived at her side.
There, in the middle of the clearing, among Naraku’s severed parts and Kohaku’s shattered remains, Sango finally broke down. She let herself fall to the floor using Miroku as her only support.
Kagome let another arrow loose before throwing her bow to the ground. “Sango-chan!”
“Stupid bitch! Pick it up!” InuYasha was screaming at her, but it almost didn't register to her. “Kagome! Pick up your damn bow!”
She did, but just a few moment too late. She let a thick scream through her dry lips as the tentacle struck her on her shoulder. She managed to pull an arrow out of her quiver as she stabbed the tentacle with it. It writhed for just a moment before falling from her shoulder and onto the ground.
“Kagome!” The young girl turned to her protector and offered him a small smile and a nod. Through her pain, she drew up her bow and notched an arrow.
She smiled at him again before mouthing “Bakuryuuha*”
He gave her a marked frown but nodded. Kagome could still hear her friend’s piercing wails and winced at the pain in her voice.
The attack had succeeded, but it had turned out that it was just another of his many clones, commanded by a small shard and a wooden doll.
She let out a small sigh, and pulled up the drain in the tub. The tinted water began to swirl like a small twister above the drain, and she lifted herself out of the porcelain bathtub.
He’ll come back soon. You know that, Kagome.
Even if he does, he won’t be too worried. I told him I was fine already and he didn’t question me. Kikyou was more important. He body was…
“Don’t finish that,” Kagome said to herself.
She shook her head, letting the water splatter on the mirror in front of her.
Maybe I’m just fooling myself. He can’t be the one, could he?

It was late, but he barely noticed.
Kikyou was gone. The smell of bones and graveyard soil was still thick in the air, but he refused to look back at the barren spot of earth behind him. He could smell himself, tainted by the scent of death.
Get up. Kagome’s hurt. Sango’s hurt. Your pack is suffering, so suck it up.
This would be the first time he would ever admit to himself that maybe Kagome needed him. But more importantly, he needed her. He needed to hear her sweet voice, to see her soft face, to feel comforted by her scent.
He took in a deep breath as he approached Kaede’s shuuraku* .He was only a few feet away, so he could hear the young monk’s gentle voice clearly. From what InuYasha could understand, it had been about six hours since they had faced off with Naraku’s clone, and Sango had yet to speak. Her eyes were glassy, but she had smiled at Shippou. Even Inuyasha had offered her a smile once, but she still hadn’t spoken to anyone, despite Miroku’s gentle coaxing.
A small Sakura* fluttered into his snowy hair, and he lifted a clawed hand to take hold of it. The scent reminded him of Kagome, but he’d only allowed himself to admit it silently in his own mind. He knew, though, that Kagome’s scent was a beauty all in itself. Her radiance permeated his mind like her scent and it had taken him a year and a half to fully appreciate it.
InuYasha pocketed the blossom and turned away from the shuuraku and toward the Bone Eater’s Well instead.
In only a few short leaps, he was standing before the well, a heavily disturbing scent entered his nose. It was Kagome’s blood. It caused the hair upon the back of his neck stand on end. Gooseflesh marred the arm of the hanyou*. He reached the well in only one stride and was down the well in an instant.

Kagome coughed. She was getting chills though she was dressed in a large sweat suit. It was one that InuYasha had worn when he had come to her time, modern-day Tokyo, just three weeks ago.
Even without InuYasha’s strong nose, she could smell his woodsy scent woven within the fabric. She took in a deep breath of his essence and shivered again.
The young woman’s family had left earlier in the day. With her jii-chan* in the hospital, Mama and Souta weren’t home as much. She’d only agreed to go once to see him, and adamantly refused seeing him anymore.
“Get it together, Kagome.” She stood in the kitchen, boiling water for a cup of hot green tea. All she wanted was the chills to go away.
Her shoulder was stinging, but she hadn’t touched it at all. It was starting to worry her. The bleeding had slowed to a slow, gelatinous ooze.
She didn’t sense InuYasha’s youki* at all, even after he’d entered the shrine through an open window. In fact, she didn’t notice him at all. Not until he put his warm hand on her shoulder.

A/N: This is probably going to be about 10 chapters. Was originally going to do a long one-shot, but I decided that I wanted it to be a chapter fic. Sorry, I’ll make a one-shot just for all of you that love those. (I, myself, love one-shots. No waiting for updates. Yay!)
A Very Big Thank You goes to my beautiful beta Devil’s Dance. She’s so cool!

Japanese Terminology:
Sengoku Jidai- The warring states era. It’s about 500 years ago.
InuYasha-Tatchi- It literally means InuYasha’s group

Onegai- Please (Have you ever heard of the anime “Onegai Sensei?” I think that’s the most lewd and perverted anime ever written with *GASP* plot.)
Bakuryuuha- Literally Backlash Wave. It is InuYasha’s second attack with Tesusaiga (His father’s fang sword)
Shuuraku- It a village made of straw and wood huts
Sakura- Cherry blossom. It’s light pink and white and has a very natural scent. It isn’t strong and you have to take a very deep whiff to get a scent at all
