As they were rushed through the palace doors, Kagome couldn't help but gawk at all the fancy carvings and large cobblestone pillars. The size of the room in itself was huge, but the ceilings were so high that Kagome could see birds nesting in the rafters. Slowly, she felt her jaw being closed. Turning to see who had done this, her eyes rested upon a small boy standing on a chair. His hair was a reddish orange and he had a large poofy tail and fox feet.
"Not quite the strangest thing I've seen..." Kagome thought, narrowing her eyes when she realized she was being impolite by staring. "I'm sorry-" she started, but the little boy cut her off.
"It's okay!" he said with a bright smile. "All first-timers to the palace stare. Either at me or the walls." he said as he showed with broad arm gestures towards the walls where he had being drawing hieroglyphics just a moment before. "I'm a Kitsune." he continued, this boy was not afraid to talk to strangers.
"Oh..." Kagome stuttered, she didn't expect to see someone of his kind here, for there were many Kitsune's in Japan, who often spent their time playing tricks on humans. They were cute creatures, non-the-less, but Kagome couldn't help but wonder what one was doing in the palace.
"I'm Shippo by the way! What's your name?" Shippo asked questioningly. This Kitsune obviously was fond of humans, and her Grandpa was too busy studying the walls to notice the odd young boy.
"I'm Kagome." She said finally, assuming it was alright to make friends with Shippo.
"Kagome..." he said her name, tasting the words as if they were the most strangest dish he'd ever eaten, but he quickly cleaned up his confusion by placing a bright smile on his face. “I like that! It's unique!" he bounced off his chair and came running up her hakama to take a position on her shoulder. "I get it!" he said finally, realizing who she was. "You two are the healers from Japan that have come to help the Pharaoh!" his smile broadened, as if the fact that she was helping his Pharaoh brightened his mood from the excited behavior he already had. Kagome laughed as he struggled to stay on her shoulder as she moved to stand by her grandpa. "Don't fall off now!" she said joyfully as his tiny hands grabbed the sleeve of her hakama. "Grandpa, look. I made a new friend!"
"That's good!" The old man's eyes softened as he saw his granddaughter laughing with the young Kitsune. "This trip has been good for her after all..." he sighed. Kagome didn't have very many friends back home in Japan. Because she was a priestess, all the other kids in the village would laugh and dance around her playing the old, "Kagome, Kagome" game. (A/N If you have not seen Inuyasha: The Final Act, I suggest you stop reading this and go find somewhere online where you can watch it!! Anyway, it’s a children’s’ game that has the kids holding hands, dancing around another kid who sits in the middle. There is a rhyme that goes with it, and when the children are finished, the person in the middle has to guess the name of the person behind them. –Kagome would always guess the correct person, so the kids would tease her and call her a freak.)
"Hey!" Shippo suddenly jumped off Kagome. "If you need to get to the Pharaoh, I can get a servant to take you there!"
"That would be great, young scribe." Grandpa said, shifting his robes as he talked.
"I can take you there instead." a voice said.
"Who-?" was all Kagome could get out of her mouth before a younger teenager, still older than herself, came out from a door towards the east of the long palace corridor.
"I am the new High Priest, Seto." he said after what seemed like ages, (A/N: He had to walk across the corridor, taking his own sweet time) and came up to them, greeting each with a polite nod of the head.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Kagome and her grandfather said in unison, just as they had practice so many nights on the boat. Shippo hid behind Kagome's head. Something about the new young priest did not seem right to him. The High Priest turned to the Kitsune.
"I would be honored to take the healers to Egypt’s Pharaoh." he said in his cool, calm voice. Kagome felt Shippo tremble, and put her hand on his back to keep him from shaking. "It is us who should be honored." she said, meeting his gaze. For a moment, there was a flick of silver in his eyes, but he turned around so she couldn't see his face anymore.
"Shall we?" he said, and without waiting for an answer, he took off towards what seemed to be the longest hallway in history.
