Chapter five

Yusuke slipped the key in to its lock hearing the sound of the metal grinding against metal made him cringe. He locked the door to the cafe as a sigh escaped his lips. He slipped the key into his pocket as he began to make his trek home. `Oh yeah I gotta get ready for Kain's party...SHIT! I forgot to get her a present!' Yusuke blinked when he noticed his feet had stopped in front of his apartment complex. “I guess I'm losing my mind...” He mumbled as he climbed the stairs.
His fingers slipped into his pocket retrieving a small ring of keys. flipping through them he grinned in triumph when he found the right one. Again he cringed as he opened the lock and opened the door. He kicked off his shoes before stepping inside.
Placing the keys in the coffee table as he passed. He began to shrug of his jacket as he made his way to the bathroom. He smelled and was NOT planning on going to some party with the aroma of sweat and musk from his adventure into the very old storage room. The dust had clung to the air and he had the pleasure of it being attracted his sweaty body.

He tossed the jacket absentmindedly onto the bathroom counter. He turned the knobs until he found the right temperature. Proceeding to pull his shirt over his head he stopped as the shrill ring of the phone echoed.
`Why? Why ME?' He mentally asked. Tossing the shirt into the hamper he stomped over to the phone and nearly pulled the man made contraption out of the wall.

“What?!” He ground through his clenched teeth.
“*Yusuke, whatever the matter it'll have to wait.*” An all too familiar voice stated. Yusuke's anger faded as soon as the sensual baritone reached his ear.
“ Kurama, what's up?” worry laced his voice. For Kurama to worry it had to be of significance.
“* Strange occurrences have been brought to my attention, and I do not mean as in little things, dismembered children with no residual aura of any kind becoming possessed and foretelling a grim future and a black fog slowly descending upon the city is what I am speaking of!*”
Yusuke paled as his eyes grew.
What?” Yusuke screamed into the phone.
“I thought demons agreed to stay within the Makai!”
“*They have Yusuke, but there is always a rebel, do not tell anyone, act calm, for all we know it is a demon trying to scare humans.*”

Yusuke's back was pressed against the wall as he slid down to a slumped position.
“I know Kurama, but a demon who is already showing us his deck? This just isn't right. If there was why not wait to flaunt his hand?”
There was silence on the other end that caused his blood to quicken.
“* Maybe they already have waited and played the game, before we even knew we were players. This could have been an elaborate scheme, or a horrible game. We will have to wait.*”

“Is that all we can do now? Wait? Wait for a possible threat to the human race? The race we were raised by! Kurama I don't think I can sit on the side lines as some egotistical demon goes around fucking with the people I care about.” Yusuke stated.
“*I agree Yusuke. But if we go scouring the city for a renegade demon it'll tip them, that we are officially in the game, which could be what they are planing, our move...*”
“I feel like I'm in a one sided chess match with an unknown player. And I don't even know the rules or how to play! Its frustrating!”
“* I feel the same Yusuke, most likely not to the extent in which you are at, but I do feel the same.*”
“I know Kurama! but what do you want me to do?!”
“*Keep your eyes peeled and alert the others when you spot some thing, other then that act like nothing is happening...*”
“I'll do it, but I won't like it...”
“*I know Yusuke...now good bye all contact must be minimal from this point on...*”
“I understand good bye.”
The line went dead when Kurama cut the connection. Yusuke Hung up the phone.
One of his hands raked through his hair in frustration.
With a shout of frustration his fist embedded in the wall. When the dust had settled a large deep dent lay in the wall displaying the young toushin's anger.

Yusuke used the now dented wall as a crutch to get up. little rivulets of blood dripped down his arm.
Stepping onto the cool tiled floor of the bathroom. The former detective turned on the shower and began to strip off the dirty clothing. where he once stood lay a pile of clothing.
As the warm water washed over him he tensed. He could never relax, especially when he was supposed to relax, he found out the hard way.
____________Flashback ____________________

Yusuke sunk into the onsen, letting the warm water relax him.
He knew he was supposed to hurry and he would, when he wanted to.
*
He was relaxed as he finished putting his fighting pants. He was not ready for the attack Raizen initiated.
“What The Hell?!” Yusuke shouted.
“ I said to hurry up!” The gruff voice of his demon father growled.
“And you thought I would listen?!” Yusuke asked sarcastically.
“Though its no matter, you need to never have your guard down, many will want you dead, and you must always have your guard up. Especially when you are not supposed to. Enemies will attack when you are at your weakest!” Raizen growled and chuckled at the same time.
It did not go unnoticed by Yusuke. “What the hell? are you P.M.S.-ing?”
Raizen smirked, “No Roizen, I am fighting, what I was meant to do!” He growled gripping Yusuke's neck and shoving him into a nearby tree, breaking the defenseless plant.
Yusuke pulled himself up his bare back was covered in abrasions.
Raizen smirked. “That particular tree's bark is used to make poison, very potent, even worse when in blood, it will leave scars..." Raizen chuckled. Yusuke growled, this time initiating the attack.
____________________Flashback ended______________

Yusuke smirked at the memory, he had learned a lot from the old geezer.
His glamour fell. His scars openly displayed.
He wouldn't do a damned thing differently if he could go back in time.
*
Snatching a dress shirt, Yusuke walked out the door of his apartment. dressed in only jeans and a crisp white tank he felt many lascivious gazes upon him.
He noted Most of them women, but some men. This was occasionally the reaction he received when he was in Makai.
Though there he was also wanted for his power and lands, his good looks and age were a plus.
He was the right age to mate. It would be many, many a millennium before he looked even a month older, he had found out that Raizen had been over 3000 years old when he died, and was still considered young.
*
Keiko smiled as she ran to answer the door everyone was coming, a slight frown flashed across her lips as she gripped the door handle. `Where are you Yusuke?' It was late even for him.
When she looked at the person standing in the door way she was surprised to see Yusuke.
He was staring at the plant by her front door. He seemed to be in his own world. Keiko was almost afraid to bring him back. The look on his face was one she had never seen before.
Fear.
It scared her yes Yusuke had been worried before, and would show it, but the shear amount of fear in his eyes had her floored.
She felt a chill go down her spine.
The longer he stayed in his thoughts, the more the scowl on his lips grew.
“Y-Yu-Yusuk-ke?” Keiko stuttered.

Yusuke snapped back to reality hiding all his thoughts behind a smirking facade.
"Hey Keiko, what are you scared about? The rumors starting to get ya?"
Keiko stared at him in awe. Yusuke hi everything, he looked to have never even gave death a second thought, even though he had died two times.
It scared her that he could be so scared one minute, then look like he was having the best day of his life.
`How many times has he hidden his fear?' That thought scared her, for Yusuke to even be worried, it would have to be big.

She wasn't so sure she wanted to know what it was.
“Hey anyone home?” Yusuke chuckled at the shocked look on her face, though she noted, it was hallow.
`Why is it only now that I realize that he hasn't laughed like he did before he died the first time...?'
Keiko gave a weak smile. “S-sorry, I'm just tired...”
Yusuke raised an eyebrow.
Keiko quickly changed the subject. “Hey is that a gift for my mom?”
Keiko asked, indicating the wrapped package beneath his arm.

Yusuke nearly sighed when she changed the subject to something simple and less tense.
“Yeah...”
Keiko's eyes gleamed as she pushed the incident to the back of her mind.
Yusuke grinned.
“Tell me! Tell me!” Keiko demanded.
“Shhh!” Yusuke looked around making sure no one was nearby.
“Nothing special, just what she has been asking for.”
Keiko's jaw dropped.
“Y-your lying!” Yusuke grinned.
“No, I'm not.” Keiko couldn't believe it.
`You should start looking at Yusuke again, there is a lot we don't, and never will know...' Keiko's mind reminded her that she really knew little about Yusuke, or was it Roizen?
She couldn't think about this now! She cleared her head of all thoughts and gaped at the young man.
“You mean to tell me you went all the way to Hiroshima to go and get it? At this time of year?”
Yusuke nodded.
“and exactly how did you get there? Train tickets to there aren't cheap! and air plane tickets aren't that easy to get...And didn't you say you didn't have a gift for her earlier today?! It would take at least a few days before you got there by car !”
“Cool it that's why I was late, I had to go and pick it up, and I didn't take a train or a car or a light rail or anything. I ran.”
Keiko looked like a fish out of water.
Yusuke thought she was going to have a heat attack when she came back.
The look on her face was one of not disbelief, but sadness.
“I really don't know you anymore...”
Keiko sighed.
Yusuke smirked.
“Keiko don't be stupid, you know me-”
Keiko looked at him with saddened eyes. “No Yusuke, I don't I used to be able to say `Yusuke can beat up three or four people at once. and still have room to fight.' or I would be able to say `Yusuke doesn't have a gang of a hundred thugs at his command.' But now I don't even know anymore! You came back some one else! for all I know there could be some horde of demons ready to fight if you even give the slightest hint, or if anyone messes with you they will back you up! I just don't know!”
Yusuke gave her a confused look, but it soon turned into an indifferent expression that made Keiko's blood grow cold.

“Keiko...No one knows who I am...I barley know. At times when I am in a fight and one of stabs me, my demon blood comes forth and whispers for me to kill them, let it take over, become fully demon...get away from all the pressure...Become Roizen, who I was meant to be. And Keiko, some times it is so tempting I nearly lose myself, but that would be too easy.
and occasionally I just wish I was human again, that I didn't have to deal with this shit, living for hundreds of years and having to watch as all who I knew while I was human grow old! With exception of Hiei and Kurama, everyone I knew and will meet in the human realm will die. And I'll have to bare witness...Sometimes death seems like the best way to get out, but then I'd be giving the bastard Enma what he wanted. Me dead! And if I were to lose myself, then he would have incentive to kill me. Either way I am stuck in the middle of everything, I human, yet not... I am demon yet, I am not. I can't stand it! I am being pulled I two directions Keiko!”

Keiko stared at Yusuke. She had never realized the extent of his pain, and she doubted she ever would.
“I-I am sorry Yusuke...”
*
“Okay, its time for you to open your gifts.” Mr. Yukimura stated.
Kain looked apprehensive, but smiled when Siranu turned the camera on to her. Sirano also known as Mr. Yukimura grinned as she picked up the first gift. and delicately unwrapped it.
(in Japan it is considered an insult to tear a present open, The actual wrapping is considered a gift as well be cause it is the presentation.)
As she opened the box a very big smile crossed her lips.
“Oh my, this is beautiful!” She exclaimed.
Siranu blushed and said `it was nothing....'
Yusuke watched as Kain unwrapped every gift so carefully and delicately as it was presented to her. He smirked a few times when she gasped. He stood as she neared the last present, his gift.
Drinking the last of his coke he headed for the door.
Never once looking back he had already greeted Kain and Siranu, wished Kain a happy birthday and stated to Siranu that he would be in tomorrow, he had no insentive to stay. Just as he opened the door he heard a very loud gasp, and a whispered `Kami...' fallowed by murmmers of `Why didn't I think of that?' or `Oh my, who ever must have bought that must be rich.' and his favorite, `I-It isn't th-that wonderful.'
He smirked as he walked out.
*
Kain stared at the beautifully embroidered Kimono. The silk slipped through her fingers she froze when she looked closer at the stitching. `i-its hand sown!'
Kain set the box gently on the ground as she lifted the kimono out.
It was beautiful! Not to the extent of a hime, but she would proudly wear it. It was a beautiful red kimono, red designs wound up the arms and wrapped around the torso.
The Obi looked to be woven from the purest gold. Turning it around her breathe caught.
The back displayed a beautiful sunset. It looked as if you were leaving a bamboo forest, and entering a beach, but only if the last bamboo on eather side of the sunset, guarding it, would permit. It was so beautifully and delicatley done she wondered if it was truly made by human hands, so clumsy and tired they grow.
As she pressed the Kimono to her chest a card fluttered to the floor. As she picked up the card she noticed the to gorgeosley crafted geta sitting in the box. She smiled, they weren't as beautiful as the Kimono, but they were beautiful.

Her eyes fell on the card. On it a message was written.
`Yo! Hey Kain, have a great birthday, don't mind that I left, but I don't want to get all mushy or have people I am a complete push over, I just might have to show them how much of a `push over' I am. Hope they don't stay and bug you, and good luck, you'll need it i'm guessing everyone will start to clear out after the party is over and you'll be left with the mess...*sheesh inconsiderate much?* Any ways see ya tomorrow, i'll be at work... anyways I think this is what you wanted, it was sorta at the last minute, but hey at least I got ya somethin!
Sincerly Yusuke!'
A small chibi was drawn at the bottom, it looked lke Yusuke giving a peace sign and sticking his tounge out.
As tears welled Kain's eyes one thought ran throught her head. `He writes exactly like his mother...'
“Kain?...Kain?” Siranu called. Kain Blinked and turned to her husband. “Who is it from?” He asked.
“Its from Yusuke...” Card still in hand she wiped her tears away.
Siranu looked taken aback, before a cheshire grin spread on his face. “The dope! He deliberatley made me think he didn't have a gift to out do me!...I have taught him well....”
Kain laughed when he said this. Keiko stood off to the side, a small smile graced her lips. `You bring so much joy, and you don't even mean to, you just do your damndest to make your friends happy...'
Her lips twisted into a frown. `just please Yusuke, make sure you don't get hurt...'
