InuYasha Fan Fiction / Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ A Matter of the Soul ❯ Prologue

[ X - Adult: No readers under 18. Contains Graphic Adult Themes/Extreme violence. ]

Umm… Chapter 1 was actually written before this. Which is why it might seem like there are two introductions. But I realized I was either going to have to write a prologue or a REALLY long flashback. This seemed the most proper choice.

Warnings: Possible OOC, lemon and or lime in future, language, violence, alcohol, and who knows what else. But I thought I'd warn ya just to be safe.

Disclaimer: I do NOT own Inu Yasha or Yu Yu Hakusho.

A Matter of the Soul
This is just a little bit to tell you what happened. Better explanations about Kikyo being alive & what happened to Kanna, Kagura, & Kouga in the next chapter.

Prologue

How could it end this way? She didn't breathe as she watched the last of her comrades fall. Without him none of the others could be revived. Sesshomaru was the only one who could use Tensaiga, the life giving sword. They had worked so hard to gain the upper hand on Naraku. Kouga hadn't been in the best of conditions to begin with, physically or mentally, having lost his pack and nearly his life to Naraku. That had only been two weeks ago. Not that Naraku cared if they were fit to fight him.

She had watched them all die. Picked off one by one. First Kanna and Kagura, whom had been freed by her traveling group. They were his own offspring, though she still didn't quite understand how. Then had been Kouga, Naraku finishing what he had started. Though she had tried to purify all the tentacles flying towards Inuyasha, one pierced his heart as he tried to protect Kikyo. And Kikyo had cried as she clutched onto Inuyasha's dead body, feeling regret that she was the cause of his death. Real tears from a real body. Her distraction caused her own death as well.

She herself had stayed near Sango, back to back, fighting Naraku's hoards of youkai. She varied between the katana Sango had trained her to use and firing arrows long distance. Shippo stayed on one side of the two girls, keeping a foxfire barrier up protecting the girls and Miroku from most lesser demons. Miroku was on the other side, using his wind tunnel to suck in demons that got through the foxfire. Sacrificing himself, Miroku sucked in a large serpent youkai, along with many of Naraku's poisonous insects. Sango went to his side, pleading for him to stay alive. Once again the small distraction was all Naraku needed. Three tentacles took two lives, Sango and Shippo. As the tears fell from her blue eyes, she held Shippo until the last of his life ebbed away.

Laying his body aside Kagome watched the last one standing. Sesshomaru, clearly worn and loosing badly, lasted only a few more minutes. Throughout the match, Naraku fought dirty. As seconds passed she felt something welling up inside her. The tears had long since ceased. Her body was covered in sweat, dirt, and blood. They were all dead, because of Naraku. She would not let him have her half of the jewel. She would protect it like she was destined to. She would avenge her friends. She would KILL Naraku! As she looked into that evil smirking face, she felt something snap.

She waited. She would listen to his last words, the way you were suppose to when you killed someone.

Naraku strutted to where Kagome sat, clearly pleased. “I will have the jewel now, miko.”

At her continued silence, he let out a frustrated sigh. “Your friends are all dead! Who is it that you believe will come to your rescue? It is of no use to fight me!”

Finally, she stood. And the look she cast him was more fearsome than any he had faced before. Her eyes were stormy blue. He could swear he could see violet flashes of lightning. Her movements toward him were fluid, as if she were in no great hurry, but not held back by fear either. The lavender power that had begun to gather around her body had his mind made up about what he had to do. He drew forth the souls of her dead friends.

Kagome stared had at him. How dare he remind her of all she's lost! Did he honestly believe she was going to hand over the jewel? To him?! There'd be a cold day in Hell first!

Her power surged forward, violently ripping limb after regrown limb off of Naraku. It tore through every demon, purifying each one, that made up his body. Finally down to the last one. Naraku, the full demon Naraku. Not the hanyou Naraku or the human Onigumo. The soul in charge of the body.

She wanted to savor this, hear his screams, as she purified him out of existence. He was little less than sludge as it was, but the soul was still in there. She knew by the maniacal laughter that surrounded her. He was `tsk'ing her. The bastard was about to die and he still thought to harass her! But this was Naraku. Suddenly she caught sight of the bright orbs floating above the pile of sludge shaped Naraku. There were eight. Four demon souls, three human souls, and one hanyou. Tears threatened to rise as a gasp and her will left her. Inuyasha, Sango, Kikyo, Miroku, Sesshomaru, Kouga, Shippo, and Kirara were accounted for. But what about Kagura and Kanna? Had they been reabsorbed into him? Had she purified their souls? She was suddenly weighed down with guilt. Why was Naraku doing this?

The laughter suddenly stopped. His voice thundered through her ears. “Miko. I offer you your friends' lives returned.”

She looked around, not sure where to focus her eyes. “I'm not ignorant of your treachery Naraku. I know you can't do that without the jewel shards. Besides, we see how well that worked for Kohaku.” She spat bitterly.

The voice was mocking and snide. “Oh, I don't doubt your intelligence miko. But you are still incorrect. I can return their souls to their bodies. Their bodies were only recently separated from their souls, it would be simple. Although, if you wait too long, the souls may just move on. What do you say miko?”

The first thought in her mind was to question him on the two missing demon souls. “Where are Kagura and Kanna?”

He chuckled darkly. “Oh, that's right they had become your acquaintances, hadn't they?”

Two more souls, Kagome recognized as Kanna and Kagura, floated in.

She chewed her lip thinking it over carefully. She knew that whatever he wanted in return would be a heavy price, but she'd pay anything to get them back. Anything that is, except the jewel. But surely he knew better than to ask for that. “What do you want in return?”

Obviously not, by the delighted tone of the demon. “I seek the jewel miko, as I always have.”

Kagome huffed at the ridiculous statement. “You know I won't do that.”

He seemed to roll an idea around in his head before slowly speaking. “Then, I seek a vessel. Something to sustain my soul so that I may live. My body now you have thoroughly destroyed, and with nothing to start from, I can not restore it. Perhaps one your demon friends who I am so graciously returning to life? The wolf? No, not a dog person. The cat, perhaps? Hm… no, not fond of the fur balls.”

Kagome could have laughed. Who is this demon? The one that was so carelessly cracking jokes. His next words stopped any thought of laughter.

“Maybe the kit? Yes, he could be the one…”

Before even thinking about her words she all but yelled. “No! Your soul may enter my body, and mine alone. Also, Kagura will have her heart returned to her and Kanna will have freewill of her soul. On these things I will NOT negotiate.”

“So be it.” Were the final words before her world went dark.

Um… so… yeah. That was an idea that came to me the other day & I decided to incorporate it into this story. It isn't something I've seen done before or at least not in the way I've set it up. If someone has… then I haven't read it & just agree with them that this is a great plot twist.
