A Matter of the Soul

Chapter 2

The next morning, Kagome removed her self from the still sleeping children to go help the others prepare breakfast. It was quite early and everything was still and quiet, except for the annoying voice in her head that kept asking about breakfast. The chill crept through her pajamas and made Kagome shiver. Dew clung to blades of grass. She'd miss all of this once she went home, the nature. More that anything though, she'd miss her new family.

|Aww… how precious| Naraku said flatly.

Promptly ignoring him, Kagome went to where there were people up and about.

Kirara mewed and rubbed against Kagome's leg in greeting. Kikyo turned from preparing a fire and smiled warmly. Kagome smiled back. Kagome was suddenly reminded of her need to speak with the older miko and knew that now was the perfect opportunity.

“What can I help with?” Kagome began casually.

“Inuyasha and Sango have gone to gather herbs, spices, and possibly some vegetables. Kouga and Sesshomaru are hunting, Kagura is sharpening a knife in order to…” Kikyo paused with a grimace, obviously unsettled with the thought, “prepare what they catch.”

Kagome thought for a moment before looking around as if she were expecting something to jump out at her at any minute. Which in a way, she was. “Then where is…”

The older miko laughed, causing Kagome to relax a small bit. Finally after gaining control of her laughter, Kikyo set Kagome's nerves at ease. “Relax… Miroku is gathering water. Filling the pot for breakfast and filling up all the canteens. I figured it would keep his wandering hands busy.”

Kagome let wry smile slip onto her lips. But as quickly as it came, it vanished. She cleared her throat and her voice took a more serious tone. “Kikyo… I wanted to ask your opinion of something.”

Kikyo's soft brown eyes gazed straight into Kagome's cool blue ones. She nodded her head for Kagome to continue. Kagome organized her thoughts on how to ask this for a moment. Finally she said simply, “Would it be possible to take others with me through the well?”

Kikyo's eyes widened at this. They had all been worried they'd lose Kagome, but no one had even thought of the possibility that others could go through with her. Of course, there was no telling what the well would allow. She knew Shippo had once tried to go through the well, but that was before the jewel was completed. Maybe the power that the whole jewel supplied would be enough.

Kagome watched Kikyo's face trying to read the emotions there. Surprise, curiosity, thoughtfulness. She had to wonder if Kikyo would think she was being selfish by wanting to take people with her. She just couldn't help it though, she didn't want to return to her time all alone. A scoff was the reply of her mind mate. She gripped the pink jewel that dangled from her neck and felt calm flow into her from it.

Kikyo sighed deeply. “There's really no telling Kagome. I mean the well use to only let you and Inuyasha through, but the jewel is whole now, and it's much more powerful than it was when it was in shard form. I don't see why we couldn't try it out.” She smiled fondly at the younger girl.

Kagome's eyes sparkled with hope. “We? You mean you would actually want to go with me?”

Kikyo tilted her head to the side a smile tugging at her lips. “Of course I want to stay with you. You're my sister Kagome. I'd never leave you all alone if I have any say in it. And I'm sure the rest agree with me.”

Kagome lunged at the taller girl and hugged her fiercely, tears of relief and happiness dripped from her eyes. Kagome felt as if a gigantic weight had just been lifted from her heart.

|Weak human|

+Shut up. + Kagome snapped back at him.

Just at that moment Inuyasha and Sango returned with baskets full of vegetation. Sango, seeing Kagome's tears, immediately went to her aid, followed closely by Inuyasha.

“Kagome? Kagome what's the matter?” Sango was caught off guard by the bright smile Kagome gave her.

“Oh Sango, I'm just so happy. We think there might be a way for me to take others with me through the well.” Sango looked shocked before joining Kikyo and Kagome in a huge hug.

Once everyone got back from their appointed tasks and breakfast had been finished, Kikyo, Kagome, and Sango stood to gather everyone's attention.

Kikyo was the first to speak and she spoke with a light and cheerful tone. “We think, that because the jewel is whole now, it has enough power to allow others to travel with Kagome when she finally has to go back. I have decided that I will go with her.”

Sango spoke next her voice a cheer. “And so have I!”

Kagome was smiling, but it faltered slightly when she spoke. “I know that this is your time and your home, and I would never want to pressure you to come with me, but it would mean a great deal to me. Is there anyone else who wishes to go?”

The three children quickly jumped to Kagome's side. “We're going with you Mamma.” Shippo spoke for them. Kagome smiled down at them, but then turned her gaze to Kagura and Sesshomaru, silently pleading their approval.

Sesshomaru shook his head, his voice cool and deep. “I cannot go. I must watch over my lands. Rin shall stay with you. She needs a mother figure and children to play with. Also, I will try to find you. I shall live for a long time Kagome, I will live to see your era, I am sure.”

Kagura looked discretely at Sesshomaru. She would stay with him, if he will have her. Turning her attention back to Kagome she smiled. “I shall stay as well, if you will allow it Lord Sesshomaru.”

He nodded his consent. He most certainly wasn't against the idea. He had found her to be excellent company. “You may stay with me.” And no more was said on that matter.

Soon, Miroku, Inuyasha, and Kouga had also decided to go with Kagome. Kagome couldn't believe it. It had been more than she dared to hope for. The all wanted to go with her. All of them! She was overjoyed. She did however, slightly wonder about her mother's reaction. Would she mind having so many people for a little while until Kagome could find a place for them all to stay? She wasn't sure how she was going to work out getting everyone who needed it into school. Or how she was going to make enough money to support them all, until they were settled, that is. Right now, she didn't care. She just had this calm reassuring feeling that everything was going to work out. That night she slept easy knowing that tomorrow she would be going home and taking her new family with her. Not even Naraku had dampened her mood.
