A Matter of the Soul
Chapter 5
It had been about a month since they had all settled in, making it early November. Everything was going smoothly, Kagome was almost passing her classes, she had perfected the wall between her and Naraku, the kids, after a few lessons on how to deal with people and basic school rules, they were enrolled into elementary school, under the Higurashi last name. The principal had given Kagome odd looks when she signed the parent signature line, but had assumed she had adopted them. He was very kind towards her, helping the children. She told him that they had been orphans that she took in, so they might not be entirely up to date with basic math and science.
Kikyo, Miroku, and Sango picked up quick as well. Kouga and Inuyasha, not so quick, but still did well. They would probably be able to hold their own in high school. How she had managed to condense years worth of knowledge into a mere month? Simple, she didn't. She had skipped over anything that was unimportant and went straight to what was being taught to her now. After going over the basics, of course.
Souta being 16, had gotten a job at the grocery store, and was helping support the large family. He delivered groceries to people, the old, the sick, and the rich. He was really starting to work his way up the ladder. He even had preferred customers. Nice to know her little brother was successful. She herself worked at the school. After explaining her dilemma, many people to feed and not enough money, they allowed her to work at the school, three hours everyday after school. She filed things for teachers, mailed letters to homes, helped organize festivals, and other such activities. It paid okay for the amount of time she worked, but really the one bringing home the bacon was her brother. The school also allowed her to use it as extra credit. If her grades dropped any lower she'd be transferred to a different school. She was really trying to keep them up, but with as much time as she'd missed from her first trimester and previous years, her GPA had dropped perilously low. She had half of this trimester left, and she hadn't figured the math, but even if she scored all A's, it still wouldn't raise her GPA enough to remain in this high school.
And this was just her problem with the school system. She had yet to figure out a way to get her friends into any high school. Exchange students, maybe, but they had no legal citizenship and no transcripts. She'd looked at the process of student acceptation and still had yet to find a loophole, or any way around the system for that matter. The kids got a fresh start, but her older friends were in trouble. Had she brought them here just to screw them over? God she hoped not.
Standing on the bus that Friday evening, Kagome was ready to drop. Her only comfort came from the jewel tucked safely beneath her uniform blouse, its power hidden underneath wards. She had gone out to a jeweler and had a chain made for it. It was stainless steel, meaning it would not break or wear down easily. The jewel had been surprisingly cooperative, even allowing a small hole to be drilled through it to allow a stainless steel loop to go through it in order to attach it to the chain. Since its completion that was the only time it had ever left her neck. The chain had been made to fit around her neck with a good two inches of breathing space. It was long enough to sit comfortably in between the points of her collarbone, but short enough that it wasn't coming off unless you broke the chain. It had no clasp. Therefor while she couldn't take it off, no one else could either.
Everyday, she got home at 8:00 in the evening, ate dinner, did her homework, and went to bed. Tonight as she walked home, she felt a slight prickle of energy at her back. It was like a hand slowly stealing breath from her. It was not malice she felt, but more a curiosity. Like a child poking a balloon, wanting to know what happens when you poke it hard enough. Something about this energy seemed familiar the longer it pushed against her own.
|Youkai.| She heard Naraku say just before a devilishly handsome youkai appeared in her path. He breathed arrogance and by the condescending glare he was giving her, it wasn't just her imagination.
His voice was deep and frighteningly familiar, “You are not what I had expected of the Great Miko.”
The way he'd said Great Miko, made it sound as if it were a title, why was he confusing her with this Great Miko person? Or better yet, Why did he sound exactly like Sesshomaru?
