A MATTER OF THE SOUL
Chapter 8
Kagome, Sesshomaru, and Ryo walked in silence to the shrine. The silence was peaceful, but the way Ryo was watching her was not. Like a wolf watching it's prey. It unnerved her slightly. They were at the top of the stairs, greeted by the whole group. Rin, Shippo, and Kanna had come running out first. Rin immediately attaching herself to Sesshomaru's leg, Shippo jumping to Kagome's arms resting on her side, and Kanna standing beside Kagome, eyeing Ryo.
Kanna tugged at Kagome's green uniform skirt. “Kagome… he feels like Kagura…” Kagome smiled knowingly at Sesshomaru, who nodded in response.
Inuyasha, Kouga, Miroku, Kikyo, and Sango came out of the house, all slightly wary of the new youkai. Kagome looked to Sesshomaru. Stepping forward, he introduced Ryo. “It's very good to see all of you again. Though, it has not been as long to you as it has to me. This is one of mine and Kagura's children, Ryo. I have much to tell you about this world that you may not know.”
Kagome stopped him with a raised hand. “I think you should join us for dinner. I, myself, have not eaten yet.” The group shared a knowing look at the word she left out, `today'. Sango and Kikyo had been the first to notice the she'd been neglecting breakfast to get to school early. Then, Miroku realized Kagome had quit taking her lunch with her. Finally, it was aware to everyone that, in order to get more work done, she was sacrificing her health. She slept little, getting home late, leaving early. To say they were concerned would be a severe understatement.
They made their way into the house via kitchen door. Miroku and Kikyo resumed their place at the stove, alongside Kagome's mother, as it was their night to help make dinner, and the children continued their homework with Souta in the living room.
Sesshomaru was watching Ryo closely, as was everyone else, except Kagome. Ryo stared at Kagome like a wolf looking at an animal that it had never seen before, wondering if it would taste good. Inuyasha growled at him and Kikyo filled the air with small traces of miko ki. Kirara, who had previously been in the living room, had taken to guarding the doorway to the living room. Kagome realized that if everyone continued with this level of hostility that the kitchen would soon turn to a battleground.

The three of them ran, yelling to each other. Kurama had a decent idea of what was going on. Just as miko hated all youkai, most youkai hated all miko. There was a good chance that the two youkai he had sensed were tracking the mikos, trying to kill them, or capture them. She was going straight into an ambush. Kurama had informed them of his scenario.
It was Yusuke who shouted a plan. “I say we just bust in and take them by surprise. None of them feel that powerful, so I say we just surprise them. We should take the mikos with us to keep them safe, just in case there are more youkai after them.”
~*~*~*~
The door flew open and it seemed like everything happened at once. Sango was wielding a long jagged kitchen knife, shielding the Higurashi matriarch. Kirara had transformed, but remained in the doorway to the living room. Kagome moved closer to Kirara, intent on protecting the children. Sesshomaru and Ryo were nearest to the now open door, swords at the ready. Naraku could feel the familiar jaki from Sesshomaru's sword. Sending out his youki, he helped fuel the already powerful sword. Everyone sent a questioning glance at Kagome, but she just shrugged.
A blue light shot through the open door and hit both Sesshomaru and Ryo, the impact sending them flying into the rest of the group. Three men stepped into the kitchen. The one in the middle with thick black hair tied back in a ponytail shouted and raised his hand, finger pointed. “Surrender the mikos, and no one gets hurt.”
Kagome dashed into the hallway, trying to get to the children. Kirara was following behind her. Quickly shifting forms, she let Naraku's youki envelop her. Once in the living room, she gathered the children, who were at first afraid, having never seen her in this form. Her body having very little change to it, except red eyes, her pitch black hair just a bit longer, and her human nails, long black talons. Her aura however, was that of a youkai, completely masking her miko ki. She took the children and Souta into the basement, told them to hide as best they could, tied her sword to her hip, then returned upstairs. Removing the shield that hid her power, she walked into the kitchen. Everyone stopped. No one but Ryo and Sesshomaru had seen her transform, and even then she had had all but a small fraction of her power hidden. Her friends could tell it was her, but they were awestruck at her appearance. The spirit detectives were halted by her shear power and beauty. Only when Kirara nuzzled her hand did her friends return to the battle at hand.
Kagome whispered into Kirara's ear that the kids were in the basement and to go down there and protect them in case anyone else came. She also told her to keep Souta down there, knowing he didn't want to be included with the children. After Kirara left, Kagome yelled out, “Outside!”
Everyone followed her order instantly. Once outside, the groups stood apart from each other. The one with spiky red hair scanned the group a few times. He spoke loud and calm. “You, miko! Why have you joined with youkai to help them hunt your own kind? The other miko is missing. What have you done with her?”
Kagome laughed slightly, drawing all eyes to her. “I am not missing! I am here.” She held up one hand and let the talons return to normal, then called her miko energy to it. A pale lavender orb appeared in her hand. She held up her other hand and let miasma drip from it. “Now give me a reason not to kill you where you stand. You have come into my home, destroyed my kitchen door, scared my friends and children, and demanded that I and my friend be turned over to you. Tell me why you deserve to live.”
A black blur shot between the two groups. A youkai barely 3 inches taller than her knelt before them. He had gravity defying black hair, with a white starburst. A white headband concealed a point on his forehead, from which a great deal of power was coming from. If she had x-ray eyes, she would have been looking at an implanted Jagan eye. He was covered by a black cloak from neck to ankle. He was quiet for a moment, then stood facing Sesshomaru. His voice was rich and deep, something sweet that left the feeling of velvet being rubbed over your skin. “Lord Sesshomaru, Lady Kagura had asked me to retrieve Ryo. She feared him to be causing mischief in Ningenkai again.”
The three behind him looked slightly dumbstruck. “Hiei? What's going on?” The youkai with long red hair spoke, his voice carefully neutral, but silky and sweet. A voice to whisper sweet nothings into your ear.
Kagome shook her head, a slight smile quirking her lips, and mumbled to herself mostly. “What is it with this era's youkai having sexy voices…”
Suddenly all tenseness was gone between both groups. Kikyo and Sango shared looks with Kagome, letting each other know they had all been thinking the same thing, before joining Miroku, ever the pervert, in full out laughter. Inuyasha and Kouga were looking as if she'd just smacked them with a fish. Sesshomaru was trying to hide a smile and Ryo was grinning like a madman. Hiei's expression didn't change, though he did look over at the woman whom had spoken. His eyes widened a fraction, but that was all. Yusuke and Kuwabara weren't entirely sure what to do. It was obvious that there would be no more fighting, but Kuwabara still had a job to do. He hadn't known that there were this many youkai running amuck in Ningenkai. The mikos were also a problem. People, human, miko, youkai, whatever the flavor, this powerful could become dangerous. Now that he really examined their auras, he could tell that they were all heavily shielded. Even the two humans had some shielding, hiding extremely high spiritual energies. Kurama was still watching the miko… youkai… woman carefully. He felt the tension and rage in her melt away, but she still had a ball of purifying energy in one hand and the other was emanating a black glow and dripping acidic poison. He'd relax when both were gone.
Hiei, seeing the source of Kurama's distress, spoke to Sesshomaru. “Lord Sesshomaru, I do not know what my comrades have done to anger you, but I'm sure it was a simple misunderstanding. I ask you to overlook this small incident? Might your warrior back down?”
Sesshomaru considered him for a moment and nodded. “I can overlook this, however, Kagome does not answer to me or anyone. It is she who you must discuss with.”
Hiei looked to her. She answered to no one? Did Sesshomaru truly place her in such high regard? Further more, how is it that she can keep her body from tearing itself apart? He has always had problems with his own opposing elements, but to be miko and youkai? It shouldn't even be possible. Especially not at the same time like she'd doing now.
Kagome watched him as he watched her. The look in his crimson eyes was considering, not friendly, not unfriendly, just thoughtful. Those eyes were beautiful. That face was beautiful, no, handsome was more the right word for it. Something hard, chiseled from alabaster. Strong cheekbones, strong jaw, probably had a strong everything else too. She had a strong mental image of kissing, licking, nipping along that jaw, down his throat, chest, down, down. She worked him with her hands and her mouth. Then his arms strong, one of them tattooed, holding her up as she slipped her legs around him. Each thrust sent the Shikon off of her chest, only to fall down again. The sound of the chain clinking seemed louder than it should. She was choking, couldn't breathe past her own pulse. The world came spinning back to her. Hiei was breathing hard, a few feet in front of her. Licking her lips she remembered the feel of him in her mouth. God, she could still taste him.
Hiei couldn't believe what he'd just seen. The way she knew his body so perfectly, even his dragon tattoo. It was impossible that she could know that. They had never even met before. Even now his body was betraying him, he couldn't help but notice the rise and fall of her chest with each breath she took. The harsh pants coming from her swollen lips. It brought back the sensation of her tongue, her lips. This is INSANE!
Everyone was watching. No one wanting to move. Arousal was thick in the air, on the tip of everyone's tongue. Ryo growled viciously. He would get no where with the miko if the koorime got to her first. Kagome realized that she had fallen and shakily stood, looking cautiously at Hiei. She looked to the shrine, avoiding all eyes, “You may all leave, I have things to discuss with Lord Sesshomaru and Naraku.” She looked to her friends. “I will be busy most of tonight. I'm not sure what happened… but I will find out. I apologize, Hiei. Perhaps you should go…” Her hands still faintly glowing with miko ki and youki suddenly ceased. Like a candle just snuffed out.
Hiei nodded to Sesshomaru. “I will tell Lady Kagura that you have him under control.” He glared at the way Ryo watched Kagome as she walked to the shrine. Maybe it was just that vision, but he couldn't help the jealousy he felt. It's not like he was going to see her again, so either way it didn't matter.
~*~*~*~
Hiei stayed with Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara for a while. He agreed to help patch the holes in the barrier and monitor Ningenkai. It was part of what he did for Mukuro anyway. As long as he could stay away from that miko. He bid them farewell, promising that he'd speak with Kurama later. The rest decided that they would come back another day to sort out what to do with the mikos and youkai.
Inside the shrine found everyone in the living room. The children didn't know what was going on, only that something didn't go very well. Everyone else was acting like nothing happened. Knowing that Kagome needed some time to think it over before she could tell them. Meanwhile, Sesshomaru was informing the group of all the rules and regulations about youkai in Ningenkai. How the world was split into separate realms. Ningenkai, Makai, and Reikai. He promised them that he'd visit tomorrow with Kagura and bid them goodnight.
Kagome, after making sure everyone was in bed, the kids in the guest bedroom, the guys on the couch in the basement, and Sango and Kikyo, in her room, she sat thinking.
+ What happened today? That has never happened. I've never even met that guy but my body reacted to his and his reacted to mine. What the fuck is going on?! +
Naraku was silent for a second, before sighing, realizing it could be only one thing. | Kagome… You know that you have access to all of my powers.Did itnever occur to you that not all of them were offensive? You used a lot of energy today. And you haven'tbeen eating or sleeping enough. You haven'tkept yourbody in good enough condition to be able to replenishyour energy supplyas fast as you were using it.You were running low on energy, so your body subconsciously sought a secondary source. Lust, Kagome. I can feed off of lust. |
Kagome blinked, then blinked again, then rubbed her temple lightly. “Oh fuck.” She had another headache.
