Chapter 17
Youko cast a serious look over to the fire apparition who was watching them silently. They needed to talk, but now was not necessarily the time. Hiei was likely the only one who could give them the answers they needed about the past now. Such as what had happened to Naraku? Had he been killed off by someone? Or could they expect an attack soon?
Hiei seemed to understand what the look conveyed for he nodded and opened up his mind to the kitsune. He had not been overly eager to do this earlier for emotions were still running quite high from their fight. But for now Youko seemed to be much calmer, at any rate his arms were occupied and from the looks of it he would not be moving soon.
`You have questions.'
`We do. What happened to Naraku?'
Hiei thought back through the centuries. He hadn't given Naraku any thought in a very long time, not that he had any need to. At the time while he was disgusted at what the bastard was doing none of it was directly against him so it wasn't really his concern. Now he was beginning to wish he had been keeping better tabs on the situation at the time.
`If I remember correctly he disappeared but to where I do not know.'
If he disappeared it could mean a few different things. Had he gone back in time and killed the half breed? Or had someone else beat him to it? And if he went back into the past then he had the added issue of figuring out how a soul could exist in the same time period twice. He somehow did not think that it was possible, but if anyone would be able to give him the answer to that question it would be Koenma. He'd need permission from him anyway to go back anyway. To go without it would be risking the Demigods wrath. Something he preferred to avoid at the moment.
`Is the any information you could give us that might help us deal with this situation.'
`No Fox, my information is basically as limited as yours. I left the area shortly afterwards having no reason to stay.'
So they had hit a dead end in that general direction. That did not mean their resources were exhausted by any means. A talk with Koenma was in order. If Naraku was somehow going to come after her he would have to be involved anyway. He'd likely send the entire team after Naraku which suited him just fine although the deathblow was his by right. He would not allow anyone else to take that from him.
`I'll be back later Fox.'
Without waiting for a response Hiei disappeared out the window. He would see what information he could dig up himself before Kurama went to Koenma. Naraku was powerful, it would be best to have as much knowledge as possible on him. There was something else that needed to be done though. If they were going to go up against him then they would need as many allies as possible. One mistake could give him the jewel as well as the girl.
Youko watched him go and pulled Kagome in closer to him. She hadn't spoken in a very long time, he was almost certain she had fallen asleep but a soft sigh proved otherwise. Nothing could be further from the truth in fact, her mind was racing with the knowledge she had gained today. She wished she could get her mother's council on what had happened. If anyone could understand what she was feeling now it would certainly be her.
“Kagome are you okay?”
“I guess so.”
“Do you regret what I had to do?”
She had to stop and give serious thought to his question. Did she regret his actions to save her? Granted she was thankful that she was alive on one hand but was it worth it? She wasn't sure how he managed to do what he had done. He didn't even know her did he? To willingly tie yourself to a stranger was hard for her to even comprehend and she was more open-minded than most people.
Would he come to love her? She couldn't see either of them being stuck in a loveless relationship but neither would she ever stray from their “Marriage” if you wanted to call it that. It wasn't in her nature to be unfaithful to her mate. If she hadn't have met Inuyasha first she could have easily seen herself falling in love with him from what she knew of him up until this point. She didn't know if she could ever love again at this point, the wounds in her heart were too raw.
And there was still so much in her life that she had to do, the first of which was finish the jewel and go kill that bastard Naraku. She could not leave it unfinished, too much was at stake. But who would help her now that the rest of the group was dead?
Youko remained silent while she thought. Neither him nor Shuichi expected an immediate answer from her, it was a complicated question. He could understand if she was torn in her answer.
“No, I do not regret it.”
Hope flickered in both Shuichi and Youko at her whispered words. They had both dreaded the answer to the question. Neither were sure how they would have taken it if she had rather they left her to die. He nuzzled her hair, enjoying the closeness.
She was getting tired again, the stress of the situation getting to her once more. When Youko noticed her small yawn that she tried to hide and the fact that she was nodding off he picked her up and carried her back into the bedroom, setting her down carefully. He stood over her for a moment as if undecided about something. Finally he sat down next to her on the bed and ran his fingers through her hair while he watched her drift off to sleep.

Kagome walked silently through the camp where the massacre had happened. Strangely enough there was no evidence of what had occurred, it was as if it had never happened. The campsite was untouched. She wasn't sure why she was here, but she knew there had to be a reason behind it.
She sat down on a large rock and waited for what was to come. She did not have to sit there long however before he came for her. Her image of him was heartbreakingly perfect, every last detail of him was flawless.
Tears fell as she tore herself up from her seat and she rushed towards him throwing herself in his arms. It felt right to her, being surrounds by his love. How she wished this wasn't just a dream.
“I'm so sorry Inuyasha, I tried to hold it off I really did!”
Guilt racked her soul over what she had done. His blood was on her hands, having been the one to kill him. She had always thought it would be Kikyo who would be the one to cause his death if anyone were to ever take him down. How wrong she had been, she had never once thought her power would lash out at him. Even though he had been on the brink of killing her she still felt guilty. Better for her to have died then to have purified her love.
“Shhh Kagome, it isn't your fault.”
How could he be so forgiving over what she had done to him? And now the fact that she was mated to another so soon after killing him was just another betrayal against him. She didn't deserve his love. All she could hope for was his forgiveness.
“There is nothing to forgive Kagome. I know what happened with you and the Fox.”
“How can you stand to be near me Inuyasha?”
“Easy, I love you Kagome. I've loved you for a long time, I should have told you how I felt sooner. Now I want you to listen to me.”
She could only nod and wait for him to continue what he had to say.
“I love you Kagome and I always will. While I may not be happy with how things turned out I understand that you didn't have many choices with what has happened to you. I don't blame you for any of it. The Fox did what was necessary and for that I am thankful. You are alive and that is what matters. He loves you Kagome, maybe as much as I do. Don't turn him away, you need each other.”
Kagome's legs began to give out on her. Funny how physical problems followed her even in her dreams she though. Inuyasha wouldn't let her fall though, he sank to the ground with her never letting her go.
“I don't know that I can Inuyasha. I love you. How can I love another?”
“It's in your nature Kagome, you have a large heart. Trust me there is room for him in there as well. He needs you as much as you need him. You have a rough journey ahead of you Kagome, I won't lie to you. This is far from over.”
“I know. I still need to finish the jewel somehow.”
Her life weighed heavy on her shoulders. She would complete the task set before her just as she had promised him that she would. She would not allow Naraku to win, even if it killed her she would take him with her.
“Naraku has to be stopped. There is much that the Fox has yet to tell you, ask him about it when you feel the time is right. He is worried about how you will accept him. Know he will do anything for you though. When times get bad, remember that.”
“I will Inuyasha. Naraku will come for me won't he?”
Inuyasha sighed and pulled her closer. He wished he could tell her exactly what was to happen. Even he did not have all the answers as to what was coming, and the answers he did have he was not permitted to tell. It had been one of the requirements for him to even come to her in her dreams. One way or another he was determined he was going to help her though, with whatever she needed. And right now it was her heart that needed healed the most. While he might not like the fact that she now belonged with someone else, he had to respect the lengths the Fox would go to for her. His devotion had already been proven.
“Keh, You know he will. The bastard won't pass up the opportunity to obtain you or the jewel now that we are gone. I am not allowed to tell you more but be on your guard. And know this Kagome, if there is a way for me to help you even with my death I will do so. You can count on it.”
“I miss you Inuyasha.”
“I miss you too but try to feel better. My time is running short here, remember that we all love you and stand behind you. If there is a way we will help you whenever you need it.”
“I love you Inuyasha! Please don't leave me again!”
Inuyasha kissed her lips softly and held her tightly to him before he started to fade leaving her alone in the clearing. She couldn't move from the spot where she sat, truthfully she did not want to. She was content to sit where she was, reflecting on all time they had spent together.

Author's Notes: Yeah I know this chapter was supposed to be more interaction with Kurama and Kagome but I needed to get Inuyasha back into the scene and bring out more of what Kagome was feeling. Expect to see Yusuke and Kuwabara in the next chapter as well as the explanation to Kagome of what exactly he is. Naraku is coming soon as well, either in the next chapter or the one after. I'm not sure yet.
Reviewer Responses:
MoonlightdemonKita: Just what I needed, dog slobber lol I don't mind though. Hope you both enjoyed this chapter as well.
Mija: That comes in the next chapter. I know, I'm terrible for drawing things out. I swear if I am not careful this is going to reach the same size as the other stories. Something I am desperately trying to avoid. My poor hard drive can't take the abuse lol Kagome doesn't realize how lucky she is as of yet but eventually she will. She just has to properly mourn the loss of Inuyasha. I hope I got it off to a good start with the dream. Somehow I don't see Inu as the type to want her to mourn him forever, especially when she has someone who cares for her as much as he did. As for Youko going back, I'm trying to work out the two souls in one place issue. Eventually it will come to me I am sure.
Rabid: Damn, I hope you feel better. Whatever it is you caught sounds downright horrid. :-/ Yes, they will have to figure this problem out soon. Seeing as Youko was the first one she saw, the first one to risk himself for her I somehow get the feeling she is always going to be a tiny bit closer to him than Kurama but I could be mistaken. If that's the case I foresee Youko being in charge more often. We'll have to see how that one plays out, Kurama needs his play time as well lol. Updates so far will continue as they have been, I'm really into this particular story at the moment. It's the email harassment that's driving me crazy now, I'm ready to just quit checking my mail for a while. I wish there was a big notice I could paste somewhere that says I'm not ignoring you just don't expect an email back lol Don't worry about the language. You should have heard mine when I saw my inbox today, I wasn't pleased. People here scattered in the face of my wrath. Speaking of which, they still haven't come out of hiding. Mwahaha I am scary :-D
phoenixs_paiste: I love Youko in his fluff and snuggle moments don't you? As for the rival, umm I hadn't named him since he wasn't going to have a large part in the story. It gets to be a pain keeping track of the OC's sometimes. And nope, Inu and Kag aren't related. He made it through the well through the bond they shared through the rosary. Although that would have been an interesting plot line. I love you Inuyasha! I love you too Kagome! Eh guys, your cousins. Sorry about that. Lol
Shabopo: That picture is perfect, exactly how I would imagine him looking at her. Now I am in the mood to draw again. I have two drawings of Youko and one of Yusuke I want to post once I grab access to a scanner. Hmmm now to find a picture of Kagome with the expression fitting the scene and I can draw to my hearts content :-)
killerkitty1106: It's probably going to throw him for a loop for a little bit. I'm not certain yet if he will stick around in the future for long. I have some thoughts for the final fight scene but it might play out better in the past. I'm not certain yet.
Arbor: Wherever have you gone?? I miss youuuuu my stalkerish friend.
