Chapter 29

As everyone made their way into the house they were met by the blank faces of Kagome's family. No one said much of anything to the appearance of even more demons in the house, resistance it seemed was futile and the more they protested the more showed up. Explanations they were certain would come at a later time, perhaps when everything had calmed down. Until then they would grin and bear it.

Shippou was having a grand time now that he was reunited with Kagome, he spent the first several minutes curled up on her lap, snuggling into her stomach. It was an adorable picture that Kagome's mother could not help but smile at. Aside from Youko she had never seen a Kitsune before, although she was curious why there were some key differences between the two. Such as why Youko had fox ears and Shippou did not.

Kurama gave the body over to Youko. Kuronue was more comfortable with him in that form obviously, as well as the fact that Kurama did not want to sit there listening to Youko become obnoxious about being trapped in their body. Of course when he sat down it was close enough to Kagome that they were just barely touching. Kagome blushed slightly and turned her attention to Shippou while Kuronue quirked an eyebrow in amusement. It would seem the kitsune had been busy in his absence.

Kuronue had no problems with most humans, hell some of them had made very interesting bed partners for both him and Youko. However he had never seen the Fox act quite so…. What was the word he was looking for? Devoted? Perhaps that was it. The look he would get in his eyes when he looked at the girl, how he would brush up closer to her on occasion, his manner of speaking to her. The girl was definitely someone special to him that was for certain.

“Youko who is your friend?”

Kuronue decided to see exactly how special this girl was to his partner. They had shared bedmates many times in the past, however he knew that if Youko was serious about this girl there was no way that he would allow another to touch her. He knew that Youko would never attack him though over anything that involved a woman so alittle flirting was a perfectly safe way for him to evaluate their relationship. Anyone else would be courting death.

He stepped forward away from the wall he had been leaning on and calmly walked up to her and gently picked up her hand, kissing the back of it gently. He noted how Youko had narrowed his eyes at him, he seemed to be repressing a growl. Kuronue smirked, so he was serious about this one. He wondered what was so special about her that she managed to snag the one demon that had been virtually unattainable if you were looking for a serious relationship.

“The name is Kuronue, it is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you as well, I'm Kagome.”

Kagome was taken back by the forwardness of this demon, he wasn't like any she had run across. She was not so naïve that she did not recognize the thinly veiled flirting that he was doing. He held her hand a few seconds longer than necessary, the sensual way he carried himself. If there was anyone who could rival Youko for raw sex appeal it was this demon in front of her. He seemed nice enough but the attention he was bestowing on her made her rather uncomfortable. Youko noticed the way she leaned in closer to his side and decided to put an end to the flirting his partner was doing.

“Yes, that is my old partner. He is a terrible flirt so pay no attention to him.”

A look passed between the two of them before Kuronue resumed his current position but not before winking at Youko. It was then he realized that the bat had been doing that on purpose to get a reaction out of him. Even after being dead for so long it would seem that he hadn't changed a bit. He found the oddest things amusing at times.

“So Youko, care to let me know what it is that I have missed?”

Back to business, they really didn't have time to play around even if it would be fun. There would be time for that later on.

“Well to start off when you first saw me today, I have to tell you that wasn't an illusion.”

Kuronue looked at him strangely. How could it not be an illusion? He looked human, he smelled human, hell he even felt human. Unless somehow death had screwed up his senses then what Youko was saying made no sense at all.

“Excuse me?”

“Let me explain… After you died I quit working for a while, it just wasn't the same with you gone. However eventually I grew bored and started pulling jobs again. Somewhere along the way I grew careless. I paid for that mistake with my life.”

“But you're not dead.”

“No, but then again neither are you.”

“Good point, keep going.”

“As I was saying I pulled my soul out of my body as I took my last breath and took refuge in the human world. I floated around for a while, disembodied looking for a suitable host which I eventually found. I merged my soul into the body of an unborn child, who is the red head you saw earlier today. ”

Somehow he wasn't surprised that Youko had managed to pull that stunt off. He didn't even know that had been possible but if anyone could manage to escape death, it would have been him. He was more interested in how he had evaded being taken to the spirit world by the Ferry Girl. She was damned persistent as he had found out when they had met. She insisted that he had to go with her, he insisted that he would stay and watch over Youko even if he was dead. Huge argument and several wacks to his head with her oar later he ended up going with her. He still wasn't sure how she had managed it, he had no body, the damned oar shouldn't have hurt. Stupid ferry girl, stupid oar.

“Well, leave it to you to pick out one of the more beautiful humans I have seen to take over. Shouldn't surprise me, you always were the most arrogant, vain creature to walk the Earth.”

“You're one to talk Kuronue. You are just as bad as I am. Back to the subject though, I didn't exactly take over the body. You see, there are two of us in here. Myself and Shuichi, we coexist peacefully. Most of the time anyway, unless he is arguing with me about something stupid.”

`Yeah, only because it's your points that are the stupid ones baka kitsune.'

`Quiet human.'

Kurama retreated grumbling in the back of their head promising that Youko would pay for that later. He'd have to think of the perfect revenge. He in fact already had plans for revenge on Yusuke for what he had done. He just needed to talk to Keiko first to find out when she was free for an entire evening. Youko wanted bloodshed, he himself would settle for mental torture. He rather enjoyed plotting against people who pissed him off, and at the moment Youko was included in that category.

“Must make for some interesting conversation.”

“You have no idea.”

Kagome watched the two play off of each other with interest as did Hiei. This wasn't a side to Kurama that was usually seen by anyone. He was always so serious and calculating. It would seem that between Kagome and Kuronue there was a good chance of the old Youko making a comeback. Whether that was a good thing or not remained to be seen in Hiei's opinion. They would have to be careful if that was the case. They did not need to raise the ire of the Reikai.

“Get on with it Fox, there are things that must be done.”

Kuronue's attention was diverted to the Fire apparition. He had completely dismissed him after it was determined he was an acquaintance of Youko. Apparently they were pretty good friends since the Kitsune hadn't reacted adversely to his words or the tone of voice he had used.

“Alright Hiei, no need to get bitchy about it.”

“Hn.”

“Youko watch your mouth around Shippou.”

“Yes dear.”

Kagome rolled her eyes at his tone and pulled herself up off the couch to introduce Shippou to her mother. The guys could finish working all these details out without her help. Youko had everything he needed to get Kaede to give him the sword. Or at least she hoped so anyway.

They found her mother out on the front porch and sat down next to her. Shippou looked at Mrs. Higurashi curiously and committed her scent to memory. By her smell alone he could tell that she was related to Kagome, so it was most likely her mother. It was confirmed when Kagome introduced them.

“Mom, this is Shippou. I traveled with him in the feudal era and he needs a place to stay now since the others are dead. Kurama found a way to bring him back to us.”

Her mother did not know if bringing Shippou into the family was necessarily a good idea or not but she would not turn the kit out. He had no where else to go, they would just have to figure things out as they went along. Perhaps Kurama would have answers for the problems that were sure to pop up. For instance he had no birth certificate nor anything else that proved he existed. How was he to enroll in school? He was going to get a proper education if he was going to become a part of their family.

“Hello Shippou, do you want to live with us?”

“If you'll let me.”

“I don't see why not, you can have your own room even.”

“Thank you Mrs. Higurashi.”

“Call me mom Shippou, it will be easier to explain if people ask about you.”

“Okay Mom.”

Kagome was glad that her mother was being so understanding of Shippou's problem. If she had said no, she wasn't sure what they were going to do. She was sure that Kaede would take care of him but she knew he wouldn't be happy. Besides, this gave Souta someone to hang out with now.

“So do you want to explain to me why there are three demons in our living room Kagome? We know about Kurama but what about the other two?”

“The shorter one with the spiky hair is Hiei. I met him only a few weeks ago, back in the Feudal Era. At first he was following us because he was curious. He didn't hang around for very long but I met him again the night of the attack. He carried me to the well. He didn't have to help me, I'm still not sure why he did. But if he were going to hurt us or try to take the jewel he's had plenty of chances. I consider him a friend now.”

“You always did have a way of making friends with everyone. He seems extremely distant.”

“He is. I can't help but think he had to become that way in order to survive.”

“You might be right, now what about the other one?”

Kagome didn't really want to admit that she didn't know that much about Kuronue. She was certain that Youko had greatly toned down his story concerning what he and his partner had done. And what she did know she wasn't sure she wanted to tell her mother. Admitting that there were three ruthless thieves and murderers sitting in her living room having a chat might not go over all that well. Not that she would blame her mother if she flipped out, under different circumstances she probably would as well.

“He's a friend of Youko's from his past life. He seems nice enough even if he is a bit of a flirt. Other than that I don't know much about him.”

“Just be careful, I'm not sure what to think of everything that has happened. To find out there are still demons in this time worries me. Although after seeing how Youko reacted last night I think you are right about him. He won't let anyone hurt you if he can help it. The others I don't know enough about to make a decission. I'll have to trust your judgment.”

“Thank you Momma, I'll do my best.”

Back in the house Youko was finishing up explaining about their newest set of problems, namely Naraku. Hiei had filled in everything he knew about the hanyou and now they were waiting to hear if Kuronue was willing to help them defeat him. Youko was fairly certain he knew what his answer would be. Kuronue always did love a challenge, this time would more than likely be no exception.

“So let me see if I have everything here. Naraku is from the past, he somehow altered a time portal to allow him through. He wants to kill Kagome, who is the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama. The jewel was shattered and Naraku has about half of it at this point. He somehow managed to kill off her entire group who was gathering the pieces of the jewel but she survived. Now we have to go to the past to pick up a sword so we can fight this guy? Am I missing anything?”

It had been a lot for him to take in although the idea of going back in time to before he was even born was intriguing. He wasn't sure what the big deal was about this sword but if it was enough to interest Youko then there had to be a reason. He saw no reason to say no to this request. The worst that could happen was he'd end up dead again. While not a pleasing prospect he had gotten used to being without a body.

Hiei gave Youko a pointed look. So far he had danced around the fact that he had taken a mate. He wasn't sure why either, it was obvious to all concerned he cared for the girl. If he would have looked into the Kitsune's mind he would have seen the reason. It wasn't embarrassment or anything of the sort. It was actually the fact that Kuronue would pounce on that tidbit of information and give him hell for it. The mighty Youko Kurama, fallen for a human girl. And a Miko no less. He'd find it funnier than all hell.

“Hn. The Fox forgot to tell you that Kagome is his mate.”

Author's Note: Alrighty, I'm going to be grouping a bunch of reviewer responses in this little note since there was such a large result to my question on the pairing vs triangle thing. It would take forever to answer each opinion individually and I'd end up repeating myself quite a bit.

The pairing is going to stay Kag/Kurama. As much as I love the idea of throwing Kuronue in there I was well aware that it would have been difficult to pull off and make it believable. It would have involved me going back through the story and rewriting a good portion of it which I would have been willing to do in order for the story to flow right. However the lines seem pretty divided as to Kuronue's addition. I feel I could have pulled it off, it just would have taken a bit of work. But leaving it as is, is fine with me as well. It just means that once this is done I go back to working on my other stories as well as trying to think of another plot for a new story where the pairing would be Kuronue/Kagome if not a triangle. I have a very, very hard time seeing Kuronue/Kagome together without Youko in there somehow. The two thieves are a package deal to me, always have been.

Now to get to the individual responses. If I miss anyone I apologize in advance, when I logged on today I had over fifty emails that were either signifying reviews or actual emails with comments on the idea. I know I am bound to miss someone here.

Kura-kun-lovr: Don't worry about it, I rather liked the idea myself. I'll end up starting another story with Kuronue featured in it so please tell him not to worry about it. He's definitely hot enough for any of the stories I could ever hope to put out, I can only hope that he continues to enjoy working with me for my stories. Now if I can get my plot bunnies to cooperate for that story.. hmmm. I had been thinking along the same lines as what you suggested for Kuronue being brought in if that was the direction the story were to take. Great minds think alike. It was my pleasure to bring him back to life, I still say they shouldn't have killed him off in the first place. Damned, evil people who did that to him.

Whirleeq: A sequel would take too much energy I think lol We'll leave it as it is and I'll think up another story. Inspiration is bound to strike me sooner or later. The co-authoring a story is a good idea. I'll role some of my plot bunnies around and see if any of them nibble on me. Thanks! :)

KogasAngel: Sesshoumaru will be coming in soon (I know I keep saying that, it will happen sooner or later I promise) Sango and Miroku's reincarnations won't be coming into it, their memories wouldn't exist in order to bring them in. If I were to bring them in I'd feel obligated to pair them up with someone if not each other and I'm having enough of a hard time with Kag/Kurama at the moment lol

Shadowfoxdemon: I'll come up with another story featuring them I'm not sure when though. I need to finish one or two of these stories first. Koenma will end up flipping out if I make it so Youko and Kuronue decide to revert to their old lifestyle lol although I'm sure Kagome would wring Youko's neck so we'll see what happens.

Rabid: Have I ever told you how much I adore you? So many reviews today! *glomps you* Skipping chapters could get you a bit confused lol I'm sure no matter what you right will turn out good. And I will be very happy to read and review each and every chapter. The entire rival thing can pretty much be forgotten now. I never intended to explore that part of the story too heavily, it was just a means to explain how Naraku was going to get to the future. Fluff is good, I hope to throw a bit more in there soon but we have to have the grieving, angsty chapters first where Youko comforts her. I miss having fluff… You're right about the jealousy issue with making Shippou older. This way Youko isn't going to feel challenged by him and Shippou can have all the cuddle time he wants. Adding Kuronue would have been hard and would have involved me combing through the previous chapters, rewriting much of it. It could have been done with a bit of difficulty but I'm not going to worry about it much. Always another story to write. Kuronue is very much going to be the flirty but extremely dangerous type here. Just how I like him mwahaha. I might bring into it how Youko and Kuronue had a previous relationship with each other later on but… I'm not certain how well it would fly. I certainly have no issues with M/M pairings, hell some of my favorite stories are well written M/M. But people might come for my head. I barely escaped alive after reading my emails! You had to mention his outfit didn't you… *goes off into a daydream* Mmm yes where was I. I don't remember. Eh well lol

Arbor: *SQUEALS* My stalkerish friend has returned! How I missed you stalker friend!!! I thought about making Shippou be a pain in his ass, but decided to only give him a bit of a hard time. If we had experimented with the Mother/Son issue between Kag and Shippou then perhaps. But since I made them Brother/sister instead I can't have him play the “My mom isn't going to have anything to do with you!” routine. Hehe glad to see you back, even if six chapters did shock your system :-D

kagomeme2000: Sango and Miroku won't be making any further appearances in the story. They reincarnated and are most likely living out there lives quite happily now.

blackshadowz243: Thank you for your review! I'm glad you're enjoying the story.

crazy-punk-gurl: More than likely she will though Kurama is going to have to make arrangements with Koenma for the necessary paperwork for Shippou.

inuyuyu_15: I don't see Inuyasha reincarnating after Naraku is killed. If he is then I would not expect him to come back into Kagome's life simply because the threat is gone and it would be a constant source of pain for Kagome and he wouldn't want to hurt her like that. Thankies for the snacks!

Shabopo: Kuronue doesn't strike me as the type to just fall into society and play by everyone's rules just because they tell him he has to. So I foresee him getting himself into mischief from time to time. :-D And yup, that was the scene I was talking about with Botan, I was rather proud of her demise there myself lol I agree. I like playing around with parts of the story. There's only so much we can do with these fics before everything has been done before. Unless we go completely OOC and AU anyway. Like with WITN I'm making it so the jewel is working against them just like Naraku is. Some might not like it but hey, I needed to do something a bit different lol

Samantha: Sorry, until my writers block goes away on those stories they won't be updated. If you run across my muses send them home please.

angel-demoness7: actually I don't mind Kagome's mom at all, I just wanted to see her portrayed as I would imagine most mothers reacting to the news that their baby was mated to a demon she barely knew :)

drakeice: That would be a possibility if I ever decided to do a sequel. It's a good thought at any rate though I can just imagine it now. Youko KNOWS how Kuronue is, and finding out he was interested in his baby girl. Oh boy!

moonlightdemonKita: Glad to hear it, I can hear all the squeaky sounds coming from Jaken. Quite amusing!

inukuramaRmine: I'll be putting together another story when inspiration strikes me. Funny, when I want it to happen it won't come. When I don't need the plot bunnies they invade my home and take over.

Autumn Norris: Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information on him which is a shame. He so often gets passed over for the other characters which is completely unfair but I do what I can to include him in my stories whenever possible. I agree it would be one hell of a fight between Sess and Youko. As to who would win, I think it would entirely depend on the circumstances they came together under. Thank you for two reviews, I feel extremely special now! *Glomps you*

I THINK that is everyone. Thanks to all who reviewed! Until next time.
