Chapter 32

Kagome knew she was in trouble when she saw Kurama's face. But then she knew that was going to happen as soon as she made the decission to go through the well. She only hoped that they wouldn't be too mad at her. After all, she had been of a help hadn't she?

Kurama wasn't exactly mad at her, upset yes. She had come through the well after being told to stay home. He wondered how she had known they were in the middle of a fight. The most predominant feeling that he had at the moment though was fear and he didn't care for it at all. Feelings of anger could come later. They could have lost her and there would have been nothing they could have done about it. He wondered how the hell she had gotten past Hiei. Certainly he would not have allowed her to leave.

Kurama went ahead into the house, he couldn't trust himself to speak at that moment. He didn't know whether to hug her or to shake her silly. They had wounds to tend to at the moment and a kitsune to wake up. He could only imagine Youko's reaction when he found out what happened.

`Find out what?'

Speak of the devil, guess he wouldn't have to wake him up after all. It was probably the feel of the well's magic a second time that had pulled him from his slumber. This was going to be bad.

`Your mate came through the well after us.'

`She what?'

`You heard me.'

`You're injured, what the hell happened?'

`Lord Sesshoumaru came for the Tetsusaiga. He's more powerful than we first thought. Without you there we were barely holding him off.'

`And she came through the well after us? Let me out Red, I have to see if she is alright.'

`She's fine although he almost had her. She managed to hold him off with her arrows until I could use the sword.'

`Let me out, if she's fine then that means I can yell at her. Let me out now!'

`Youko wait for a while. We need to find out why she came through to start with.'

`Trust me, I'll find that out while I am yelling at her!'

`Do you think yelling at her is going to do you or her any good Youko?'

`It would make me feel better.'

`I'm sure but look at her, something is wrong with her and I'm not sure what it is.'

`You're right, she seems sad. If you aren't going to let me out then go comfort her.'

Kuronue looked to Kagome taking not of the worried looks she was casting to Kurama. He wasn't the one she needed to worry about. Youko was likely to throw a fit when he found out she had placed herself in danger. And based on the way Kurama's hair was streaking silver it was a good bet that he already knew.

Kagome sighed, there wasn't anything she could do to change it now, not that she would have anyway. She kept her eyes on him, her gaze being drawn down to the Tetsusaiga. Inuyasha's sword.

`Inuyasha I'm sorry. Forgive me.'

“He'll get over it Kagome, though if you aren't careful he'll chain you to the bed so you can't come after him like that again.”

Kagome leveled a look at Kuronue that was one of fierce determination with a trace of sadness. If her mate or her friends were in danger she would not be held back from helping them. She would sacrifice herself if she had to as long as they were safe. It was something they were just going to have to get used to, it was part of who she was. She had failed once, she would not do so again.

“That wouldn't stop me.”

Kagome turned and walked into the house passing by Kurama who had listened to what they had said to each other. Somehow he knew that she meant exactly what she said. He shoved Youko down and followed after her. Youko needed some time to calm down before he allowed him to confront her. The idea that she would willingly place herself in danger frightened both of them. They couldn't lose her.

The three of them sat down in the kitchen and were quickly joined by Hiei who was looking less than pleased, especially when he saw the condition they were in. He glared at Kagome clearly unamused. He was waiting for an explanation that she was determined she wasn't going to give yet. Instead she busied herself with the first aid kit tending to Kurama's wounds first, then Kuronue's. When she was finished she sat back down and stared at Kurama defiantly. He was not going to make her feel guilty about going. She had enough to feel responsible for without him adding to it. Shippou had started to come into the kitchen when he heard they had returned but stopped quickly when he felt the tension in the room. Perhaps it was best if he left them to themselves for a bit.

“Hiei why did you allow her to leave?”

“Allow her to leave? Kurama her fucking barrier damned near fried me when I tried to stop her.”

His glare never left her face, they all had been under the impression she could not control her powers so how had she managed to call up a barrier in order to get away from him?

“I said I was sorry! It's not like I had any control over what it did to you.”

“But you called it up to begin with knowing I was going to stop you.”

“Hiei regardless of what you think of my abilities I assure you that I have no control over what it does or does not decide to do. It works when it wants to. You of all of us should know that since you stalked me in the past. Do you really think I would hurt any of you purposefully? I'm hurt you think so little of me!”

She got angrier by the moment, she would never hurt on of her friends if she could help it and she had thought they knew that about her. Apparently though she was mistaken if Hiei was accusing her of this. As her anger mounted she started to tremble with rage and her skin took on a pinkish glow.

To his credit he did not back down from the unintentional show of power. He looked over to Kurama who was watching her carefully. It would seem that he energy responded best to extreme emotions. Anger, fear, love, any intense emotion would bring them forth. She wouldn't have any control over them in that instance. She needed to calm down though before she inadvertently purified one of them.

Kurama stood up and walked over to where she was seated. She didn't even notice that he had moved, she was too intent on trying to force the energy back down and was losing the battle. How could they think so badly of her she wondered. Easily her conscious answered, she had killed Inuyasha and they knew it. What was to stop her from doing the same to them? She had tried to forget what had happened, even for a little while. And now it had come back, worse than before. She couldn't escape it.

He knelt down next to her, heedless of the energy crackling around her. If Youko was the one dominant he would not be able to approach her much less touch her. He would have to be the one to calm her down. Kneeling before her he wrapped his arms around her slight form and held her close to him.

“Kurama…..”

“It's alright, she wont hurt me. Kagome, you must calm down. We know you wouldn't do anything on purpose. Even Hiei knows that, he's just upset you managed to get away from him.”

“No, he's right. I killed Inuyasha, I might kill you by accident as well.”

She tried to remove his arms from around her so she could leave the room but he wouldn't let her. He knew she had a lot of unresolved issues revolving around Inuyasha's death and she needed to deal with them sooner or later. If the time was now then so be it, but he wasn't going to allow her to do it without him.

“Let me go Kurama.”

Kurama grasped her chin gently in his hand and forced her to look at him. The despair in her eyes was plain for everyone to see. It was drowning her slowly and would eventually kill her if she couldn't deal with it.

“Kagome look at me… It wasn't your fault. Inuyasha nearly killed you. You had every right to protect yourself and that's exactly what happened. If you hadn't he might have succeeded.”

“No, because Hiei had arrived and killed the witch who had control over him.”

“You would have still died, Hiei would not have brought you to the well had Inuyasha lived. I would not have found you, and we would not be bound together. You would have bled to death instead. Inuyasha would not have been able to save you.“

“You should listen to the Fox, what he said is the truth. You were brought together for a reason, do not question it.”

They just didn't understand, how could they? They hadn't killed someone that they had loved. They hadn't watched death cast it's shadow in the eyes of someone they would have died for, knowing it was caused by their hands. They couldn't understand.

Now that her anger had been replaced her powers had receded back into her body. Depression took it's place as she relived the worst memory in her entire life. It was one she would never be able to forget. Her bangs hid her eyes as hot tears coursed silently down her cheeks, shattering when they made contact with one of Kurama's arms which was still wrapped around her. It was just one more thing to berate herself for, showing her mate and friends exactly how weak she was. She couldn't stop the thought that perhaps it would have been best if she had died.

Her thoughts were so open, her defenses down. Anyone with the slightest bit of telepathy could easily hear her unvoiced thoughts, see the memory that replayed in her mind. They could see her worst nightmare that had come to life as it replayed in her memory. Without a word Kurama stood and gathered her into his arms. He took her to her bedroom to try and ease the pain in the girl's shattered heart.

Neither Hiei nor Kuronue had said a word as he left with her. They had seen the agony she lived with.

Reviewer Responses:

Mija: Glad you're enjoying the interaction between them. Hopefully it will continue to go as well now that we are heading into the area that the fact that Inuyasha is dead has finally been driven home to her.

Ox King: As amusing as that would have been it wouldn't have fit in with the angsty feeling to this chapter. It was a cute thought though.

Jasmine Fields: Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for reviewing.

Rose Fury: With pleasure ;-)

Rabid: The limit always has the last word with you. I say kill it and get it out of the way. As for my spelling error I say BEH! Not sure if it was tangled fingers, the fact that the R and the E are right next to each other or the fact that I was typing in the dark. Maybe a combination of all the above. Eh well I will fix it eventually. I need to start spending money on the manga honestly. Might help out the stories somewhat. You know I had completely forgotten about her cat lmao He'll make an appearance eventually.

Arbor: I am Evil!!! Mwahahahaha okay, I'm done now. You're right about the hips things. *le sigh* I could stare at them forever, guaranteed I wouldn't be passing out though. There is very, very little that shocks me. So I say Bring it on Youko!!! Mwahaha. Bet this chapter wasn't quite what you expected lol He'll have his opportunity to express himself later on, I needed to get Kurama more involved with her without Youko's interference this time especially if they are ever going to cement the bond between that half of them. Hehe so when can I start reading what you've written? :-D

moonlightdemonKita: I do, just not sure how I am going to write it just yet. And Jaken made the mistake of hiding under my bed. *Tosses Cerebus his squeaky*

Dark Ice Kitsune: I am evil aren't I? Nice name :)

kirei kitty: No sleep and an over active imagination lol I may branch out into other anime's at some point but right now I'm just having too much fun with these two.
