Chapter 34
Naraku snarled in frustration. He had watched the girl who had become his obsession through the mirror looking for an opportunity to snatch her away but she was always surrounded by those other demons. He had an attack prepared for when the two unfamiliar ones left her alone with the dark demon but then the bitch had to disappear down the well for reasons unknown. Now that they were all back he was set back to watching and waiting. And waiting was all he had done for the past month. It was beyond infuriating.
He had thought it would be easier to snatch her from her own time, not more difficult. It was as if there were some God somewhere mocking him. Well, he may not be able to do anything about the gods but there was something he could do about one other who he knew was laughing at him. Kagura, the eldest of his children. She had been having a difficult time hiding the amusement that she had been feeling over his predicament. Perhaps it was time for another lesson to be learned.
“Why don't you go out and explore the city Naraku? Surely you will be able to find something to hold your attention.”
While reminding Naraku about the outside world might not have been the best idea for anyone concerned it would divert his attention off of her. She knew he was rapidly losing patience with everything and everyone. She waited for his reaction. He would either do exactly as she suggested or she was in for a very long day of excruciating pain.
“Perhaps I will. You will accompany me and explain how this strange world works.”
Kagura almost smiled, this could be amusing indeed. It would be too easy to see how many accidents that she could get him into. After all, he wouldn't know what a cross walk was for, perhaps he could go play in traffic and become acquainted up close and personal with modern day transportation.
“As you wish Master Naraku.”
A short while later they were both on their way into the city. Naraku took care of shielding their presence. They did not need to run across the ones who had defeated his puppet. Not yet anyway, retribution for their interference would come later. For now he wanted to learn more about the world he was going to conquer.
He sneered as people passed them by openly staring at him. Kagura could have told him it was because of how he had dressed that was attracting their attention. But he also knew that it was unlikely that he would adapt his style of dress to be more suited to the era they were in. She did take note of the open admiration he had however for the shorter skirts the women wore. Some of them were the same length, if not a few inches shorter than the uniform Kagome had so often worn in the past.
“Such indecent clothing women wear these days. The view is enjoyable, several of these women would be a welcome addition to the castle as concubines. You will see to it Kagura.”
Kagura said nothing, just continued walking next to him. What he was asking wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to accomplish. It wasn't as if she could grab women and haul them off on her feather, not in this time anyway. However she knew the pain that was waiting for her if she refused or questioned his order.
As they got closer, the traffic greatly increased as did her fantasy of a tour bus running over her Master. When one passed by her the fleeting thought of pushing him in front of it crossed her mind but she dismissed it. She couldn't guarantee that it would kill him. She didn't even want to consider what the punishment would be for that transgression.
“What are these foul creatures?”
“They are called automobiles. They took over the role the horse played as a means of traveling.”
“Strange, then they move by way of magic? I sense no living energy from them aside from the humans inside.”
“No, it isn't magic, but I am unfamiliar with the way they move. I was never overly concerned with such matters.”
“You will make it a concern. You were the one that was supposed to be able to tell me everything about this time.”
“Yes Master.”
Had Naraku been something other than what he was he would have stood with his mouth slack, in awe of the buildings that he was seeing. He had indeed picked a good time to live in, there was nothing like this back in the feudal era. He doubted that it had been the humans that had been the ones to build such structures, certainly it had to be the demons that had survived to this time. He wondered how powerful the beings were who inhabited these dwellings. He watched the humans walk in and out of them at random. Perhaps they ventured inside to worship the masters of such places. There was only one way to find out, and he needed to size up the competition anyway. With Kagura following closely behind him, he stepped into one of the buildings.
***************************************************************** ***************************
Kagome was beginning to feel smothered. She had thought she had it bad before but it was nothing like it was now. Since she had inadvertently broadcast her feelings to anything with the slightest hint of spiritual awareness, telepathy or empathy she had someone with her around the clock and quite frankly she was getting sick of it.
Would it kill them to allow her to have some time to herself? To think, grieve, or anything else she wanted to do? Youko was by far the worst about shadowing her but even his human side was beginning to join in on it. And if it wasn't Kurama then Kuronue had taken up the job as guardian much to Hiei's relief. Granted, Kuronue was a better conversationalist then Hiei ever was but there were times that if she had to have someone watching her she would rather it be the fire apparition. At least he left her alone for the most part, only bothering her if there was something pressing that he needed to know.
Naraku had yet to make another appearance and they couldn't track him down for some reason which was pissing Hiei off to no end. That his Jagan could be blocked by Naraku's shield was irritating. He was supposed to be able to find anyone he needed to and now this bastard hanyou was thwarting everyone's attempts.
Shippou was finally getting over his clinginess now that he had adjusted to being alive once again. He was spending more and more time with her, now their mother which was all to the good. He was growing quite attached to her, the bond of mother and son quickly beginning to form. Souta now had the brother that he had always wanted, even if they did bicker about things from time to time. Shippou was true to his kitsune heritage in one thing. He was greedy, attempting to keep everything he found interesting under his control. Perhaps it stemmed from being an only child, but it was something he was going to need to work on. Youko just grinned and had said that the behavior was normal.
If Youko was anything to go by then it was definitely normal. She had thought that Inuyasha had been possessive, but when Youko shifted into one of his moods he put a whole new definition on the word possessive. At those times not even Shippou could touch her. Kagome didn't know exactly how to feel about that. It infuriated her to no end that he attempted to control who she came into contact with but at the same time she was touched that he cared so much for her that she brought out his fiercest protective instincts.
She had to smile when she thought of how he reacted once they got around to talking about her going through the well. He could decide whether to hug her or yell at her, it was quite amusing. However when he told her she was never to do that again he wasn't prepared for the reaction she gave him. Until now she had been pretty easy going about everything. She hadn't been herself, after all she had a lot on her mind. Now that things were somewhat becoming normal again she fell back to her normal behavior and Youko didn't quite know how to deal with her.
Kuronue thought it was funnier than all hell. The Great Youko Kurama had chosen a mate that was actually more stubborn than he was, if that was possible. They were perfect for each other in his opinion, she could deflate Youko's over inflated ego with a few careful words. She was the only one that could get away with it too, Youko gave her liberties that even he had never been allowed.
Kuronue liked the girl a lot, she had a wicked sense of humor like they did and she was not afraid to play but at the same time she took her responsibilities seriously. Youko had taken over attempting to train the girls powers with varying results. She had managed to shield her mind after some hard work but she still couldn't channel her energy into anything but her arrows. Youko was a grueling taskmaster though and eventually Kagome had had enough. She wanted a day to take a break and do something else. Training sessions always ended with her getting a migraine and for one day she didn't want to have to deal with it.
Kuronue watched the two of them square off with each other. The battle lines were drawn and neither one had any intentions of backing down. Both Kuronue and Hiei watched them with interest. The look on Youko's face had been priceless when she had told him in no uncertain terms that she was taking the day off.
“Kagome, you know you need to learn this. Sit down with me and lets begin.”
“I said no Youko. I'm taking the day off, that's the end of it. I want to do something else for a change.”
“Hmm That might be able to be arranged then. Let me escort you to the bedroom to show you what I have in mind.”
Kagome twitched, that was certainly not what she had in mind when she said she wanted to do something else. Youko may sleep in the same bed with her occasionally but she certainly was not ready for anything physical and he knew it. Youko stared at her, his expression on of mischief.
“You pervert! I am not doing that with you!”
“Those are your options love. Chose which you would prefer.”
Kuronue looked over to Hiei who could only shake his head. It was obvious to the both of them that Youko had said the wrong thing to the girl based on the expression on her face.
“He has a death wish doesn't he?”
“Hn.. I think you might be right.”
“Well, he's certainly managed to piss her off that's for certain.”
Pissed off would not begin to describe how she felt at that particular moment. Although she didn't know it, Youko had a reason for acting the way he was. Her power was tied so closely in with her emotions. She had refused to train today so he was forcing her into it in a roundabout way. Angering her would call the energy up and she would be forced to control it in order to avoid injuring anyone. As he stood there he watched her struggle with it and finally subdue the energy. Her control over containing it was getting better, now if only she could call on it when she needed to.
“Bravo, it didn't take you as long as it normally does to shove it back down.”
“You jerk! You made me mad so you could force me into training? I ought to slap you silly!”
“You love me too much to do that.”
“Do you care to test that theory?”
Youko looked at her uncertainly, fairly sure she wouldn't strike him but with the dark expression that was on her face he wouldn't lay odds on his safety. He was attempting to figure out how he could get himself out of this current predicament when he heard the faint sounds of footsteps approaching. He quickly gave control over to Kurama and waited to see who it was that approached.
Kuronue was already in the tree next to Hiei waiting to see who their visitor was. Kagome quickly surpressed a groan, she did not need this. Not at all. She cast a warning look over to Kurama which plainly said `Keep a leash on him' and then turned her attention back to the interloper.
“Hi Hojo, what brings you here today?”
Author's Notes: Yes, I know I am evil, you should know this by now. Please refrain from giving me death threats, or other warnings of impending torture of any sort. There should be another update coming tonight if I can decide what to write.
Reviewer Responses:
whirleeQ: I'll be fairly easy on him. He'll probably be banged up some but it's more the mental torture that he's going to be put through that might drive the lesson home. For the relationship, you are very right which is one reason why I jumped a month in the time frame here. Words alone won't make her feel any better, only time will and if I managed to drag this story out that long without giving people the lemons they want I might not survive the experience to finish my other stories lol I hope to be doing more from Kagome's perspective, there are just so many characters that have to have depth added to them and I haven't even gotten to Yusuke and Keiko yet. *Bangs head on desk* This can't reach fifty chapters, it just cant. Naraku will probably have a run in with the police soon, it's how I'm thinking of bringing the rest of the YYH gang into it. Too many stray thoughts running around in my head. Perhaps I can form them into something that sounds halfway decent :-)
Gem: we started down that road. Poor Youko, whatever has he gotten himself into?
Autumn Norris: The only reason I had that chapter written the way it was is because regardless of whether he wants to use it or not I feel that if Inuyasha were to die since the Tetsusaiga is a Family Heirloom he would want it to stay in the family. So at that point I cannot see him leaving it to just whoever picked it up. As for which episode's have what, I am afraid that since I do not have cable here I cannot watch any shows so I have no idea about the episode that you are referring to. My apologies if I offended you on how I portrayed him.
Rose Fury: There probably won't be much if any fighting between the two of them. They are just two totally different personalities that for the most part won't be able to stand being around each other.
Rabid: of course not. Now if you told me you hated me or something like that then I would be crushed lol We had a storm raging here most of the day. A tornado touched down less than a mile from my house, so I stayed off of the computer. I look forward to more conversations between the two of them, I think Kuronue's just going to annoy the hell out of him for a while *Snickers* Don't even mention writers block, I almost got it today with this story, I was going to pull my hair out.
inuyuyu_15: Training has started but I'm not sure how far Youko is going to get with her. She might slap him into next year with his perverted comments.
Natsumi Tsuchi-Ookami: As much as I wish I could disagree with you I think you are right. There are more than ten chapters left. This is going to end up being a never ending story I just know it.
crazy-punk-gurl: I haven't decided if I'm going to send her to Genkai's temple or not. Perhaps if I want to push the 75 chapter barrier. Butter knife eh? Sounds painful lol
Person... : Oh she won't approve, but this is the over confident, assuming Youko we're dealing with here. He's not even taking into account that she's going to object. What a surprise he is in for.
Shabopo: Perhaps Hiei might bring Yukina over to visit with Kagome instead of the other way around. Especially since he is spending so much time at her home. Hmmmm random thought, since Naraku is eventually going to kidnap Kagome, what happens if he takes Yukina at the same time? *Goes deep in thought* I think I like that. Hiei is gonna go into a homicidal rage.
Arbor: After talking with you through these reviews I am quite certain I am going to like whatever it is that you write. So, post post post! :-) As for Youko, I wonder if he would come with us willingly or if we'd have to attempt the bondage thing with him. Interesting mental image there, Youko tied to the bed.
bloodbunny: His brother is definitely in, he's already been giving me suggestions and then demonstrating what he has in mind. Such talent, I am constantly awed by him. In fact he's dragging me off of here now, he said practice makes perfect, wonder which idea he's wanting to repeat this time.
Yoko-Sesshoumaru: Glad you are enjoying the story so much. This one will probably be the first one finished, then more than likely either C.O.S. or Y.W.B.M. I wouldn't worry about people staring. They stare at me all the time for some strange reason. I perfected my imitation of Hiei's glare. Makes them back off real quick. :-D
MoonlightdemonKita: Glad to see him happy again.
Thanks to everyone who reviewed, until next time.
