Chapter 44
“Are you sure Kurama? I don't feel anything in there.”
Kurama laid a hand on the mirrors surface, feeling the thrum of magic that coursed through it. Botan may not be able to sense his presence but he did. For now Youko was safe even if he was trapped in the harmless looking weapon. There was a slight chance that Koenma could extract his soul and force Youko back into his body. It was that hope that kept him from breaking down once again. He swore that if Koenma could do this for him he'd make sure that Youko never came to the surface again. Youko would die if that were to happen. His heart was already breaking; he couldn't handle being completely alone.
“I'm positive Botan. He's in the mirror and I think Kagome may be in there with him as well.”
Kuronue cleared his throat interrupting any further conversation. Five pairs of eyes immediately locked with his own. Some staring with hostility others with no obvious emotional overtones. He needed to know what exactly had happened, he had no idea what they were talking about aside from the obvious fact that Kagome was dead and somehow Youko had split from Shuichi.
“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?”
“Just who the fuck are you?”
Kuronue looked at Yusuke with distain but it was Hiei who answered the question. “That is Kuronue, one of Youko's old friends.” The fire apparition glared at him for a long moment as the bat demon knelt down beside Kagome's body, gently taking one of her hands into his own. “Explain now Kuronue. Before I lose what patience I have left.”
Kuronue didn't say anything for a long moment. He could feel everyone's eyes on him; he knew that he had failed. He was supposed to have kept her safe and she had managed to escape him. Now she was dead and he placed the blame squarely on his own shoulders. Yes, she was the one who had rushed headlong into danger but could he honestly say he would not have done the same thing if he had a mate that was in danger?
“Kuronue!”
Hiei's sharp voice cut through his thoughts and he looked into Kurama's eyes, wincing at the grief they contained. “I failed her. I thought I had managed to talk some sense into her. Instead what I said only encouraged her to come here.”
Kurama couldn't believe what he was hearing. `What the hell did he say that would encourage her?' Kurama glared at his friend with all the intimidation that years of living with Youko had given him. He wanted answers and he wanted them now.
“And what pray tell did you say to her that would send her running here?”
Hiei laid her body down gently and stood ready to intervene if it became necessary. He did not believe that Kuronue would engage in a physical altercation with Kurama but he had no doubts that Kurama would attack his friend if he said the wrong thing. And Kurama could not be injured if they were to have any hope of rejoining Youko's spirit into his body. He himself would reserve judgment on what had happened until the entire story came out.
“Basically I told her that she'd be nothing more than a distraction and that in this fight she'd be useless.”
“And the stupid girl just had to prove you wrong. Fucking wonderful, even I know better than to say something like that. Let's get this cluster fuck of a mission over with. Koenma should be able to fix at least part of this.” Yusuke turned to Botan, obviously waiting for her to make a portal. As she did so he cast one last glance at Kurama and Kagome's body. `Personally I think you'd be better off dead if you're that damned stupid but Kurama wouldn't be. If Koenma brings you back you better not hurt him again or I'll kill you myself.'
Hiei heard his thoughts but remained silent. He did not agree with Yusuke's train of thought but then he knew Kagome better than he did. Still, he was furious for what had happened. He would deal with her in his own way if Koenma brought her back to life. But by the same token he would not allow Yusuke to touch her.
“That is my mate you're talking about Yusuke. Watch how you speak of her.” Kurama picked her up off of the ground and stood up.
Hiei picked the mirror up and used the Jagan to peer inside. What he saw had his eyes widening momentarily. `They chose now of all times to do that?' Kuronue gave him a questioning glance but Hiei ignored him preference to watch what was happening inside of the mirror. He'd have to remember to ask the Fox later how he managed to pull that one off.
Yusuke gave no comment in return, what he would have said would have been cruel and Kurama did not need that right now. He limped through the portal and into Koenma's office followed quickly by the others.
Koenma looked up upon everyone's arrival. He had been watching the entire fight on his computer monitor and he was extremely unhappy about how things had played out. He had his ogres bring in a cot before the group had arrived. “Set her over there Kurama. We have much to discuss.”
Kurama did as he was told and stood next to her, waiting to see what Koenma had to say. The Demigod glared at each of them in turn, looking considerably more intimidating since he was in his teenage form.
“I'm extremely disappointed. To begin with let's start with you Kuronue. The main reason I granted Kurama's request to bring you back to life was because Kagome needed someone to look after her when Kurama could not be there. As I can see by what happened out there my trust in your abilities seems to have been misplaced. I am well within my rights if I decide to return your soul to the Reikai. However, I think it would only add undue stress on everyone concerned so I am only going to say this one time. Do not make me regret my decission.”
Koenma waited for a response as his words sank in. He would not tolerate failure a second time. Kuronue only nodded, he had half expected Koenma to send his soul back to the spirit realm. This at least would give him the opportunity to apologize to Youko, he was certain he was quite furious with him.
“Yusuke, I am appalled that you would treat a body so. It is because of this we have an added problem. In case none of you noticed during that escapade Kagome's half of the jewel was absorbed into the mirror. Now I must find a way to remove it. Hiei give me the mirror please.”
Hiei peered into it once more to see if they were finished yet. By the looks of things it was going to be a while, Youko was in his element and she had finally consented to a physical relationship. The fox was not going to let a moment go by considering neither of them knew what was going to happen to them after they got out of the mirror. Reluctantly he placed the mirror on Koenma's desk.
Koenma looked at him oddly, it wasn't like Hiei to take such an interest in things. He picked the mirror up; at first he could not sense anything in there. Until he touched the glass that is, his spirit energy bringing a picture into focus. Hiei smirked as Koenma's eyes widened, setting the mirror down rather hastily.
Kurama looked sharply at him, wondering exactly what it was that he was missing of this exchange. “Aren't you going to free them from the mirror?”
“Hmm? Oh yes.. Well, they are rather indisposed at the moment; I don't think it would be wise to bother them. However this gives us time to discuss our options. If you haven't noticed the tie that Kagome has with the jewel is affecting the current state of her body. It's healing of it's own accord even though she is technically dead. I won't need to do anything aside from have Botan guide her spirit back into place.”
Some of the tension went out of Kurama and he sat down heavily. He wondered how long it would take for her body to repair itself. “And what of Youko?”
Koenma regarded the young man before him carefully. There were a couple of options open concerning Youko. He wondered which he would choose. “There are two options, the choice is up to you and Youko. I can rejoin the two of you or I can give Youko his old body back. However, if Youko obtains his own body he must return to the Makai. That would mean that Kagome would end up either returning with him or they would have to separate. He could not stay in the Ningenkai on his own.”
Kurama was torn. He knew that normally Youko would jump at the chance to have his own body back but the Makai was a dangerous place and it was likely that Kagome would be killed simply because she was a human. When it was discovered she was a miko every demon in the realm would be after her.
He also felt very lost without Youko inside of him. He had often wondered what it would be like to have peace and quiet in his own head. Now he had it and he hated it. Call him selfish but he wanted the arrogant kitsune back. “I don't think it's a good idea for her to go to the Makai and I know Youko will not leave her. So I vote that we rejoin.”
Koenma nodded, he was fairly certain that would be his answer. Now they just needed to get the two souls out of the mirror. He looked into the mirror once more, it would seem that they were taking a brief break. He maintained contact with the glass and projected his mind into the mirror. `If you two are quite finished. It's time for you both to vacate the mirror.'
Youko pulled her into one last loving embrace. There was no telling what was going to happen now; he had no desire to let her go. “Always remember that I love you Kagome. No matter what happens after we leave here, I promise we'll find each other.”
Tears slowly made their way down her cheeks as she buried her face into his chest. She was deathly afraid of what was about to happen, she'd be perfectly happy to remain in the mirror as long as Youko was with her. However she knew that just was not possible.
”I love you too Youko.” Desperately she pressed her lips to his, pouring her emotions into one last passion filled kiss. When they broke apart they turned towards the mirrors surface expectantly. Both dreading what was to come.
Koenma's hand glowed, drawing them out of the mirror. The jewel however hit the surface and dropped to the ground once more, unable to pass through.
Everyone in the room watched as two clouds of mist appeared in front of Koenma. One of shimmering silver, the other a mixture of silver and pink. “Youko you have a choice to make. You can either decide to rejoin with Shuichi or you can have your old body back. However if you decide to have your own body you must remove yourself to the Makai. Kagome can go with you if she wishes however she will not have the protection of the Reikai if she does. Or you two can separate. However if you choose to do that then for the most part you would not be able to see each other. Occasionally Botan could open a portal for her to visit however it would not be a common occurance. The choice is yours.”
Without hesitation Youko's spirit drifted over to Kurama and waited. Botan went over to him and grasped his energy with glowing hands, slowly pushing it into Kurama's body. The change in Kurama was immediate, his eyes brightening visibly.
`Thank God you are back Youko.'
`You mean you missed me Red?'
`Of course I did you Baka kitsune.'
Youko didn't even complain about the name-calling. Instead his tone took on a deep shade of worry. `What of Kagome?'
`Don't worry Youko; she'll be back with us soon. Her body just has to be repaired first. What happened in there?'
Youko smiled and instead of telling him he showed him, including calling up the sensations he had felt while touching Kagome. Kurama inhaled sharply and growled deep in his chest startling everyone in the room. `Everyone was mourning the two of you and you were doing that? You are the most shameless creature I have ever met.'
Koenma shook his head, afraid to ask what they were discussing. Instead he turned his attention to Kagome's soul. “Your body is repairing itself as we speak. I expect that within the hour it will be ready for you to return to. However if you ever do anything like this again I will lock you in a cell until this is over. Do I make myself clear?”
Satisfied that his point was made he turned his attention back to the rest of the group. “I'm certain that you all have other things to do besides crowd my office. You all can go. Kurama may stay if you wish.”
Eventually everyone filed out to return to their respective homes. Kurama sat next to Kagome's body observing the healing process. He still was unsure of how it was working but he was not going to question it. Hiei surprisingly decided to stay as well much to Koenma's consternation. He was not about to leave her on her own even if Kurama was watching over her. She found herself in trouble much too often for his comfort. He would have to keep a constant eye on her from here on out until this was finished.
Reviewer Responses:
Jasmine Fields: I thought it would be an interesting twist Hehehe
Gem: I am glad you enjoyed that, I had an unbelievably hard time writing that lemon believe it or not. For some reason I have that problem when trying to write the gentle, romantic scenes. Bah, give me a hard core lemon to write any day of the week lol I thought about smashing the mirror. Instead I'm going to play with the jewel being in there.
Kuramarose: he might just end up doing that lol Kurama still has to mate with her as well. Maybe him and Youko will take turns with her. Hmm could be interesting. Will have to think on it some.
Ookami K.: I will do my best.
Kogas Hentai Luver: I honestly can't say who's my favorite anymore. Hiei is just so…. Hmmm.. Well…. Edible… Ummm.. Sexy… hmmm.. *drools a bit* Where was I again? I'm glad you enjoyed that chapter so much, I'm looking forward to the next lemon. Kurama and Youko taking turns with her *fans self* This is going to be fun :-D Poor Kag has no idea what she's in for now though, everyone is going to be on her ass for a long time over this stunt. If she thought it was bad before she's in for a surprise lol
bloodbunny: she'll be back soon :-)
SIT!: Thank you, I try my best to draw the readers in with the character development :-)
Miko Of Avalon : The story isn't over quite yet though it's getting there.
Rabid: *Glomps you* Youko has always struck me as quite the romancer for some reason. Sure he can be the “Throw her up against the wall and take her on a moments notice” type on occasion but honestly he's never really struck me as being really into that sort of thing as a common occurance. I could be totally reading him wrong though, who knows. You had me giggling for near five minutes over the necrophilia/pedophilia remarks. I swear we are demented individuals. Could you imagine watching your soul mate being reborn and then have to wait for them to grow up? Talk about torture. You might be right about Yusuke. He's holding a major grudge against her right now which does not bode well. He will have to watch his mouth around her. LOL I'm not going to kill Kuronue off. I like him too much to do that, though your side plot was a good idea lol
katiepatie: *runs screaming from the lawn gnomes* Arrghhhhhhh!!!
Shabopo: I never was sure about the mirror. So I took a chance and prayed lol I agree with you about Koenma, I originally intended it to be all the jewel that brought Kagome back but decided against it. Since Koenma brought Youko back if he refused to help Kagome then the spirit world might be looking for a replacement prince lol
Feathergriffin: I understand completely. I despair about finishing two of my fics. My muses have just up and vanished, never to return it seems.
Kagome-reincarnation: Yes, everything works out
Vixen Of The Flame: Thank you!
Kita: Here you go :-)
Kitsune-Miko-Tenshi: Nah, you didn't offend me at all.
inukuramaRmine: The muses strike when they strike. If I manage to finish a chapter they won't allow me to hold off on posting it. They are evil like that lol
kuramasgal: ask and you shall receive :-)
Tenchi-No-Kaze: Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Kirin Kage the Shadow Girl: Thank you
Night Ember: LOL I'll take your word for it on the torture. And thank you, I was rather worried about how the lemon turned out.
