Chapter One- A New Home

Kagome sat in the car with a far away look on her face. Her mother had been worried about her well being ever since she came back for good from the federal era.

She never told anyone what had happed two weeks ago when she returned teary eyed and battered. She told her family that she didn’t want to think about it and bring the memories back to her mind. She didn’t want to remember what he had done. All they knew was that Naraku was dead and she had the complete Shikon no Tama.

“Kagome we’re here.” Her mother said. Her voice full of concerned for her daughter.

Disturbing her from her dreaded thoughts Kagome looked up at the step that headed up to her grandmother’s shrine. She had always loved coming here to visit grandmother Genoa. It helped her forget her travels to the past, if only for a little while.

Getting out of the car she looked around the humongous shrine that her mother had insisted she come to stay until she snapped out of her depression, if that was possible. Sighing softly she moved to the trunk of the car and pulled out her one suit case.

“Now Kagome, your grandmother said she had some business to finish up, but she’d be back late tonight. You’re to make yourself at until then.” her mother said taking a small box of items she packed to make her feel more at home.

Kagome just kept walking as she opened her grandmother door, knowing she always left it unlock incase she ever showed up.

“I know you’ll be fine Kagome. Your grandmother has you enrolled in a private school for the fall. She wants to help you, we all do sweetie.” her mother said, trying to get something out of her daughter.

But Kagome just kept moving into the house on the shrine, quickly glancing at the table in the hallway, a pang of hurt hitting her as she saw the framed photos on the table. One of them was a picture of her seventeenth birthday with her family surrounding her and her ‘69 forest green mustang. It was the same day she had returned for good. Her mother and grandmother had made the decision that she would move to her grandmother’s shrine.

Another was a photo she had given to her grandmother a year ago. It was the whole group together, happy and in high spirits. Sango and Miroku stood together with Kirara between them. Kouga stood next to them with Ayume by his side, as he finally took her as his mate. Kaede stood with Shippo in her arm next to her holding Rin with Sesshoumaru behind her and him at the end. Tears filled her eyes at the memories of that day again.

Next to that photo was one of her and grandma together for the New Years festival last year. Her grandmother had wanted her to have a real vacation to relax.

The last photo was another group of people Kagome had meet during the festival. Though she knew they wouldn’t remember her.

‘Not even he would remember that night.’ She thought sadly.

“Kagome, dear, Why don’t you start unpacking and I’ll make you something to eat tonight before I go.” her mother said from the kitchen, taking her attention from the pictures in the hallway.

Bending down she picked up the small bow of keep sakes and her suit case and headed for the room her grandmother had reserved for her only. Ever since she could remember she had this room to herself for it had been her father’s room when he was growing up. Her mother had told her she was conceived in that room.

Ever since she could remember she had refused to change a thing in the room, loving how well it was set up. Her father had taught her the love of good music before he passed away. He had left behind only a dozen 80’s and 70’s band posters for her and his record collection. Everything else went to her mother. She had added to the room a few things, but it still looked the same as her dad had left it for her. AC DC, Led Zeplin, Def Leppard and even some band from her generation donned the walls of the room.

Sighing softly Kagome quickly unpacked her things in their right place. She already had some clothes here that she didn’t bring home, knowing her mother would throw them out. It was why she loved coming out to her grandmothers during the breaks she got.

Pulling out a shirt that showed more skin then her old uniform she laid it out on the bed along with black mini skirt. She had planned to go out on the town tonight and find out what had changed since New Years. Finishing with the unpacking and finding shoes to match she left the room to find out what her mother had made for dinner.

As she entered the kitchen in time to see her mother put a plastic container in the fridge.

“I made you your favorite Kagome, oden. Just heat it up and you’ll be set to go.” Her mother instructed, “Souta’s father is coming to take him for the weekend. I should get back home before then to make sure he’s packed.”

Her mother pulled in into a hug but she just stood their, unresponsive to the love her mother gave to her. If only she knew what had happen in the past. Would she still hug her? Care for her?

Letting her daughter go she headed out to her car, instructing her daughter to call her when her grandmother came home, and that she would drop off her mustang during the week. Kissing her good bye she left, closing the door with her daughter standing in the hallway.

“Finally, I thought she’d never leave.” Kagome mumbled under her breath.

Heading to her room she stripped her self of her clothing careful of the bruises she had hid from her family she pulled on the skirt that covered the scratch marks on her thighs. The baby-blue shirt covered everything but a bite mark on the top of her breast. But she knew with a little cover up no one would notice.

Finally ready she left the house to head into town. Just as she was about to go down the stairs a black and pink portal appeared to her right. Jumping into defensive position she readied herself for an attack. It hadn’t been the first time a portal appeared at her grandmothers and they where attacked.

But no one stepped through the portal, but that didn’t mean she could let her guard down. She knew grandmother could make portals too. She’d taken her to the world where demons lived. Moments later a girl with bubble gum pink hair walked out of the portal. She recognized her instantly with the blue kimono she wore. She was one of the girls in the picture. Following behind her was her grandmother and the others in the photo, even a few extras.

“Kagome, you arrived. I hope your trip was an eventful one?” Her grandmother said, smiling at her granddaughter as she hugged her.

“Mom drove me here. She left not to long to go. She said you wouldn’t be home till later tonight though. What are you doing here so early?” Kagome asked, giving her grandmother a curious look.

“Boton here was kind enough to bring us here after our mission. I had hoped we would arrive before you to welcome you to the shrine, but your mother changed the plans again I see.” Her grandmother said, irritated at her dead sons wife. She never did like that woman.

“She said she didn’t want me to get lost. I could walk here in my sleep if I wanted too. She’s fussing over everything. It was irritating when she pulled a butter knife out of my hand, afraid I would cut myself.”

Her grandmother frowned at this. She knew very well her granddaughter wasn’t suicidal. If she took her own life it would only show to him that he had won.

“I will deal with you mother in the morning. For now why don’t we make dinner and introductions can be made. I’m sure you don’t remember everyone from last time. You may all spend the night if you wish.” She said to the group that arrived with her.

“Yukina and I can go buy us all diner. Yusuke, Kurabara, and Kurama can set the tables outside for us to eat.” One of the brown haired girls said, taking command quickly.

“Kagome, why don’t you get some music for us to listen to?” Grandmother asked.

“Yes grandmother.” Kagome said softly before entering the house.

“So old hag, what’s your granddaughter doing here? Shouldn’t she be home getting ready for school?” Yusuke asked.

“Kagome is moving into the shrine with me Yusuke. Tomorrow she will start school with all of you. You are going to help her out Yusuke.” Genkai demanded of her apprentice, “All of you please. She needs it.”

“Yeah right old hag. Like I don’t already have enough on my plate; I got toddler sending me away all the time, my own school work, and I’m already babysitting my mother when I can. I don’t have time to watch your granddaughter.” Yusuke said his anger building up as he thought of all his responsibilities, “I don’t even have time for myself, it why Keiko left me.”

Genkai watched as Yusuke’s aura grew dark with his anger at what Fate had given to him.

“It will only be for a while; still she gets into the swing of things.” Genkai informed the group.

“I don’t need a babysitter grandmother. I’ve taken care of myself on my own. You of all people should know I’m not as naive as I was two years ago.” Kagome said, surprising everyone as she stood at the door of the shrine.

Genkai turned to face her enraged granddaughter. All she wanted was for her moving here to be as smooth as possible.

“I just want to make sure someone’s there to help you when I can not Kagome. No more then that.” Genkai informed her, trying to keep her calm.

Her mother had already informed her of what could possibly happen if her granddaughter let her anger get the best of her since she returned.

“I. Don’t. Need. Any. One.” Kagome spoke sternly.

Her eyes, slowly glowing white. The Shikon no Tama glowed bright at the emotions coming off of it guardian. Her hair and clothes began to rustle around her as the winds shift and grew angry with her. The power coming off of her in waves turned everyone silent as the stared in awe at her. The power radiating off the beautiful girl before them far surpassed that of her grandmothers or Yusukes. Weather it was all her or the jewel was impossible to say.

“Kagome, I just want your transition here to be as comfortable as possible. That is all granddaughters.” Genkai said, soothing her granddaughter’s anger.

At Genkai’s words her miko energy returned to her as quickly as it had came. Yusuke was the one to notice the change in her power grow when it had.

“So, what do we want to listen to?” Kagome asked cheerfully.

Everyone looked at her in shock. One moment she was an angry, ready to purify anyone miko to a calm go happy innocent school girl.

Opening the CD case she got from her room she began pulling out CD’s for them to listen to. Most of the CD’s from the bands that hung on the walls of her bedroom.

“So old hag, don’t you think some introductions should be made? I don’t think your granddaughter knows anyone of us.” Yusuke proclaimed.

“What an excellent idea Yusuke.” Genkai spoke, her eyes sparkling at what would happen if her granddaughter told them who she really was.

“I’ll go first since in was my idea to begin with.” Yusuke said, “I’m Yusuke Urameshi. I don’t like taking shit from anyone so I tend to get in fights, which helps me keep in shape for my line of work.”

Kagome’s head cocked to the side at Yusuke’s introduction, something that made the young man chuckle at.

‘Line... of work? He looks just about my age. Didn’t grandma Genkai say we were going to the same school?’ Kagome thought as she inspected Yusuke.

Eyeing him carefully she noticed a few nice qualities about him. Under the green uniform he wore she could see the muscles he had built up over the years. They weren’t bulging, but well toned. His dark brown eyes showed how much he had seen in his one life time, reminding her of her own life. But he couldn’t possibly be working a job that involved fighting or so much strength. He was the same age as her for Kami sakes.

“What type of work do you do Yusuke?” Kagome’s curiosity took over, wanting to know more about the young man in front of her.

Yusuke looked uneasy at Genkai, asking for permission to tell her daughter about demons- and not the ones her parents told her where under her bed. Seeing Genkai nod her head in silent agreement, knowing without words what he was asking, he took in a deep breath.

Genkai on the other hand knew how her granddaughter would react. It would be a lot better then Keiko did when he told her why he was always gone. Kagome would understand what they did better then Keiko or Yukina ever would. She had told her granddaughter of the missions just as Kagome told her of the past. She was one of the few that knew what happen to her. It was because of the trust Kagome had in her.

“I’m a spirit detective. I protect the human world from the demons that escape their world.” Yusuke explained, ready for the girl to start laughing at him and call him crazy.

“Oh!” was all she could say

‘No wonder theirs so much energy coming off of him! But that doesn’t explain the demon’s I sense around us, especially his own.’ She thought to herself.

“My partners are Kurabara, Kurama, and Hiei. Boton and the old hag help once in a while.” He continued.

“I’m Kurabara.” The orange Elvis hair styled boy yelled out.

His uniform was much like Yusuke’s buy only a light blue color. His brown eyes made him look goofy. And just like Yusuke she could feel his power, just not nearly as strong.

“My name is Youko Kurama, but most people just call me Kurama. It is a pleasure to meet you Miss Kagome.” The red head spoke, charming her by grabbing her left hand and kissing her hand as he bowed down to her.

His uniform was purple, a color that fit him well. His eyes, a darker forest green then her new mustang, watched her carefully. She noticed the hint of gold that appeared in them, startling her as a painful memory came back to her. But he calmed her down with a smile that would make most girls turn to putty in his hand.

Kagome just smiled her polite smile at him. “It’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance Kurama. But please, there is no need for the formalities. Just call me Kagome if you will.”

The other member snickered behind her, catching her attention quickly. Quickly turning around, Kagome automatically grabbed for the Shikon no Tama. Her instincts were screaming at her that he was a threat to her and the jewel. But she could sense something different about him. He reminded her of all the demons that tried to take the Shikon no Tama. Yet he was a mix between good and evil, fire and ice. Something never heard of. He reminded her so much of Sesshoumaru, a deadly opponent but a great ally and friend.

“Hn. Like I have any need for that damned Shikon. I’ve heard of the legends of what is does to the most powerful of demons, miko. You can keep your cursed jewel.” Hiei growled out.

Startled, Kagome backed away from the small hybrid until she ran into a strong chest behind her. Startled yet again she pulled away and turned to see who she bumped into.

“Hiei! Be nice. She’s just doing what her instincts tell her to do. It’s not like you give the hint that you are a good guy all the time.” Yusuke warned the hybrid, “So be nice. Or else….”

Kagome saw the glare Hiei sent to Yusuke, and then to her. It was then that she saw something she hadn’t noticed before. It sent a shiver down her spine as she saw the hate in his eyes towards her. And then he was gone in a flash. It took her a moment to calm herself down.

“Is he always so dark and mean?” Kagome asked out loud.

“Hiei is Hiei. He’s the worst enemy to have but a great warrior and ally. You’ll learn soon enough to ignore him.” Yusuke said, comforting her for the moment, “But for now its chow time. The others can introduce themselves during diner.”

Kagome looked to see that a giant make shift pick nick table had been set up and was filled with food placed on top. Smiling a true smile for the first time she headed towards the table with Yusuke behind her.

Kagome sat between Yusuke and her grandmother as they loaded their plates with the food Yukina and another girl had bought.

The one who went with Yukina introduced herself first. “I’m Keiko by the way. I was Yusuke’s girlfriend but now we’re just friends. You’re going to be starting school with us right?” Keiko asked, filling her plate with potato salad and turkey sandwiches.

Kagome watched Keiko load her plate, then turned to Yusuke who was waiting for one of the bowls of salads. He didn’t look like he wanted anything to do with Keiko, or be near for the fact. Yet some how he stayed civilized. She thought of how someone like Keiko was dating a guy like Yusuke. Opposites may attract but some shouldn’t.

Keiko seemed to be smart, bookworm smart. Books and school were the only things in her life. But she was beautiful… in a way. Her mouse brown hair was short. Her golden-brown eyes looked strained from all the reading she’d done.

Yusuke was strong, dominating, and protective of his belongings. That she could see when he bickered with Kurabara over the last turkey and cheese sandwich. He didn’t look like he cared for school, much less study when he was gone.

“Yes, I believe I’m going to you high school tomorrow.” Kagome spoke as she grabbed the spoon for the egg salad.

At that same time Yusuke also grabbed for the spoon too, grabbing Kagome’s hand instead. Kagome quickly pulled her hand away. Mumbling an apology she waited till he was done.
“So you like egg salad? It’s my favorites. Next to oden.” Yusuke said, taking the spoon and scooped some egg salad onto Kagome’s plate and then his own.

“I love oden! It’s my favorite dish of all time. I could live off it.” Kagome squealed in delight, “Or at least try too.”

“I know the perfect restaurant that serves the best oden.” Yusuke said a glint of some kind mixed in those brown eyes of his, “Would you like to check it out?”

“That would be pleasant.”

“It’s a date then. I’ll pick you up at seven o’clock tomorrow. It’s formal wear to enter. I hope you have a dress to wear.” Yusuke popped in.

Kagome’s eyes went wide. Understanding what his intention really was. Her mouth opened into a shocking O shape. A light blush crawled up onto her cheeks.

“Yusuke! She hasn’t’ been here for more then an hour and your hitting her up for a date! Poor girl.” Another brunet scolded playfully.

“Yeah Yusuke. Who’s to say she won’t find someone way better then you tomorrow at school.” Keiko sneered at her ex-boyfriend.

Kagome’s head jerked toward Keiko. How could she be so mean to Yusuke. Even if they date for a short or long period of time, it was wrong to treat him so rudely. She looked back at Yusuke. He wasn’t’ as cheerful as he was a moment ago. Instead his eyes turned into a dark brown color. His lips turned into a thin line. Something that shouldn’t be on his beautiful face

Yusuke glared at Keiko, who looked at him, daring him to challenge her words. He stood up and headed towards the dojo on the shrines grounds that her grandmother had added. Probably to vent some anger on the poor dummy’s no doubt.

“Keiko, that was uncalled for! I was only joking. You went too far.” The brunet spoke, scolding Keiko for real this time, “I’m sorry Kagome where are my manners. I’m Kurabara’s sister. This is Yukina and Boton” She pointed to the two girls next to her.

“Where are my manners? It’s a pleasure to meet you all. Buy I’m going to check on Yusuke.”

Kagome grabbed her plate and Yusuke’s a banded one and went off to find the spirit detective.
