Chapter 1
Forgetting the unforgettable
Kagome sat in her window, staring down at the shed that concealed the well that took her back to the era of demons, monks, and many other evils. She hadn't been in it for three years, she refused too. It was even difficult to be on the same grounds with it present.
She was leaving for college in a week and wouldn't be back until she graduated. Her mom and brother would come and visit her at her apartment during the holidays. Her mind wondered to her grandfather, she wished she could have spent more time with him before his time passed. It had been a difficult time fore her the first year of her return to her time. Everything had fell apart right in front of her. Her grandfather died, her love betrayed her and friends disowned her, including the ones in the feudal era.
Her mind was still foggy of the events and she didn't want to remember them, she kept them locked up tight in the back part of her mind, where she knew they wouldn't be bothered.
It was a beautiful day out. The sun was shining and the sakura trees were in full bloom and there was a light breeze present. She opened the window to her stale room, refreshing it with the sweet smell of spring. She leaned out the window letting the sun melt away her worries and the wind wake her, she took in a deep breath and she was soon flooded with wonderful memories of the feudal era, those with the half-demon she came to love and with her friends.
She liked remembering the good memories and wished that things could have been different or had never changed. She was interrupted by her mother's voice calling her down to breakfast. "Coming!" she yelled delightfully in response. She raced down stairs, tripping on Buyo. Kagome recovered hoping she didn't hurt their elderly cat. He was fine. He rolled over on his back and stretched.
Kagome giggled and rubbed his furry stomach receiving a comforting purr, signaling that he was satisfied by the pleasurable attention. She rubbed noses with him and smiled, even though he more than likely didn't understand Kagome, she still told him all of her secrets, knowing that he would never tell anyone.
She picked herself up and started descending the stairs once again, closely followed by the obese cat. She walked into the kitchen, the smell of french toast and the fresh spring air warming her head to toe. She smiled sweetly to her mother and then looked down were Sota was sitting. "Hey bro, what's up?" She asked giving him a warm smile too.
"Good, how 'bout you?" He asked as he flicked a cornflake from his cereal at her. "Great, isn't it a lovely day mom?" She asked returning the cornflake to him, by throwing it in the box then chucking the box at Sota's head. "Hey!" He yelled as he ducked out of the boxes path, he looked at his sister and stuck his tongue out at her. She smiled at him and picked up a pair of scissors and acted like she was going to cut his tongue off. He quickly stuck it back in his mouth, then covered it with his hands.
"Kagome, I'm surprised at you." Her mother scolded. "You shouldn't treat your brother in such a way." Ms. Higarashi added, placing her hands on her hips.
"I'm sorry Sota. I shouldn't be so mean to you." She apologized, satisfying her mother enough for her to turn back around to her cooking, as she did so the two siblings stuck their tongues back out at each other and began to laugh loudly, scaring their mother, causing her to drop her cooking utensil into the batter for the french toast.
Kagome put her hands over her mouth, covering her smile and subduing her laughter. Sota also followed Kagome in doing the same. They had really made their mother mad now. They both backed out of the kitchen and out of the house, avoiding a severe lashing from their mom.
"Tag!" Sota yelled as he touched Kagome and ran. "Sota! Aren't we a little old for this game?" she yelled after him, but knew she just needed to humor him and play along. She shook her head, she couldn't help but smile at her brother's antics, she ran after him and quickly caught up with him, tagging him and turning around to avoid him, she herself was laughing hard when he caught up with her.
She stopped in front of the shrine, causing Sota to stop also. He looked up at her, concern in his eyes. She was no longer laughing and the smile was gone too. The misery she had went through so long ago seemed to have come back in that second. He could sense it. "You miss him, don't you?"
"Yeah, I do. I miss them all." She answered, smiling sadly knowing that they didn't. "Tell me Sota, why can't I forget them?" She said as tears fell down her face then sank to her knees. Sota was there to hold her. He was no longer the little boy that needed comforting all the time, it was his sisters turn, it was time for him to repay her for all the times she was there for him.
"Shhh....Kagome it's alright." He cooed, stroking her hair as she continued to weep. He didn't know what exactly to do, he just let his instincts lead him and hoped that would work for his heartbroken sister. He couldn't help but feel sorry for her, even though he didn't know what had exactly happened between her and Inuyasha or her friends. She was to depressed, he could remember that day, he would never forget it.
She had come home from the feudal era, it was different from the other times. She was tired of coarse, but she was unhappy and had been crying, she didn't bother to say anything to anyone. She had dropped her backpack on the floor and went up stairs and he hadn't seen her afterwards for at least three days. She was so miserable, much as she was now. He had sworn himself to kill Inuyasha if had ever shown himself at his family's home.
"Kagome if I knew, what happened, maybe I could help you and maybe you would feel better." He stated, looking at the top of her head. She looked up at him, fatigue claiming her. "Sota help me inside to my room and I will tell you." He nodded and help her up, then he scooped her up into his arms and carried her inside, up the stairs, and into her room. He sat Kagome on her bed and pulled a chair up to listen to her painful story.
