-Chapter 1-

kagome's prov.

Someone was staring at me, an eerie sensation when you know your alone. I was in my room, where I usually was, reading a book that was required for the fallowing school year. Romance, something that had always, unfortunately, caught my attention. It was quiet, my family had gone to the store a while back, they would be gone for an hour or so more.

My mother had fallen in love with a older business man, 20 years her senior, two years after my father had fallen ill and died. The man, Kazoku, lived roughly in the middle of nowhere. A large, old, Victorian style house in the mountains. Furnished richly, old world type of man I guess you could say. He had no T.V, no computer, which I had thought weird, he was a business man after all, didn't he require these type of things?

Two weeks in this house and I still get lost when looking for the bathroom. Its like the hallways change, that, or I need to focus more on which way I turn. It was a Sunday, I could hear a radio playing somewhere, a church stationI could tell. Kazoku wasn't a religious guy, but he always had us pray before we ate.

My room was on the top floor, the largest besides my Mothers and Kazoku's. Four floors, basement--to which I have never seen, and if I have a say will never--,first, second, and third--which was part attic, another place I will never go. The room was nice, the walls a pale blue color, the wood floor had been recently done over, a shiny dark oak, easy to slip and fall on if you wore socks. My bed was farley large, a white, see-through canopy covered the left half. And a large bay window, with a small balcony, I absolutely loved it.

My brother, Souta, had the room below me. Kazoku had stocked his room full of video games, and a large flat screen T.V. The only one in the house to which he greedily never lets anyone use. Though I could care less, as long as I have a book, paper and pen, I will live just fine.

I closed my book slowly, marking the page and sitting it down beside me. I could feel my heart beating loudly in my ears, my breathing was a little shallow. I wasn't scared per say, just...excited perhaps. The eyes I have felt through the two weeks of my living here have never diminished once. I blushed. Not even when I was in the shower. How perverted...

I sighed deeply and got off the bed, my eyes searching every nook and cranny, trying to find the owners of the eyes that even haunt my dreams. Nothing. Relief filtered though me, with a tint of disappointment. I went over and grabbed the book, placing it in the shelf next to the bedroom door.

I walked out of the room, and immediately noticed the feeling came back. I ignored it and the eyes and tried to find my way downstairs, intent on getting something to eat.

After two wrong turns, I finally found the stairs leading to the kitchen. I immediately went to the fridge. Nothing but a small can of Coke. I grabbed it and snapped it open, taking a swing. I winced, my eyes watering. That stuff was always strong. I sat it down, my hands going for the cabinets, still nothing. I sighed and leaned back against the counter, my hand going to my stomach as it growled. Then the pantry door--which was on the other side of the room--creaked open.

I walked over, the eyes seemingly more intense, and opened the door all the way. There were some cans, soups and various eatables. But something in the corner made me squeal in delight. A bag of chips, unopened. I grabbed the bag and made my way out of the pantry. I sat on the island in the middle of the kitchen, my hands already tearing the bag open. I munched on my carb packed treat happily, then it hit me, the pantry door is always locked. I ate over half the bag before my stomach demanded I stop. I clipped the bag shut, and placed it back in the pantry, locking the door behind me.

I walking into the living-room. My eyebrows rose, a small incense was burning, and the radio was on, a song playing that I couldn't find the name too. My heart was beating in my ears again, but I couldn't find it in my being to be scared. I walked to the couch, plopping down and leaning back with a sigh. I recognized the song now, Goo-Goo Dolls I think they were called. The lyrics I couldn't find, but the beat lulled my into a drowsy state. Black Balloon, the name of it was, but my mind wasn't all present. I closed my eyes and sighed again, the smell of strawberries swirled around me. And then it was black.

I awoke to the radio being turned off, little things like that always woke me. I blinked lazily at the ceiling...wait, ceiling? Wasn't I on the couch? I sat up quickly, to quickly and a wave of dizziness washed over me, causing me to groan and lay back and close my eyes. A deep chuckle caused me to snap them open again, my body once again sitting upright. The dizziness was still there, but I held back.

There was a see-through figure sitting on the edge of my bed, I could see every detail of his being, yet I could see through him to the wall behind him. He had silver hair, seemingly gray at first and long, past the middle of his back I suppose, since it polled around him onto my bed coverings. Furry, fox-like ears on top of his head, twitching every now and then to some unknown sound. He was wearing white, all white, the thought of him being an angel came to mind but was quickly diminished when I looked into his eyes, the eyes that were most definitely not those of an angel. Yellow molten eyes, like melted gold shining in the sun light, where full of laughter and mischief. I'm not sure what made me decide they were not of an angel, but deep down something said no.

"You should never move to quickly after you have slept." He said, his voice smooth and seductive. Yes, he was definitely not an angel of any type.

I was speechless, what should one say to one who was see-through?

"It's rude to stare, you know." He chuckled, a sound to lovely to be legal.

"What-?" my voice cracked, causing me to blush and clear my throat as he laughed again. "Who-what are you?" I finally said, my voice even and slightly demanding.

He shrugged, his hear shifting with his movements. "A spirit? A ghost perhaps? I have never been entirely sure myself. Can you see me?"

I nodded, tucking a lock of black hair behind my ear. "I can see you, though you're see-through." It felt strange, talking to a ghost I realized, but at the same time, not.

He nodded back, his tail swishing in thought. How cute, I thought, what I would give to touch it. He must have noticed where my attention lied because his tail moved again, his ears flickering in amusement at my secret love. I blushed and diverted my eyes elsewhere. Then a thought hit me, "What's your name?" I asked.

"Youko," he said simply, his eyes on me again. "And you're Kagome Higurashi, right?"

I nodded, I was going to ask how he knew but then it hit me that he must have been there from the beginning. "How did I get here? I was on the couch last, if I recall..."

"Yes," he ran a hand over his hair. "I brought you up here, you didn't seem to comfortable down there on that old excuse of a couch."

"How?"

To my surprise, he laughed, "Ghosts have...many talents."

"The incense, music?"

"Me, I rather enjoy music and the smell of strawberries." His eyes flickered over the room absently, "You smell like strawberries, and oranges. Interesting combination, something I have never smelt before on a human, or Youkai."

I blushed, but asked, "Youkai?" my eyebrows rose. "I thought that was just a myth, legends?"

He chuckled again. "Then what am I, do you suppose? A figment of your imagination?"

I shrugged, "Perhaps, mother always said I had an over active imagination."

He shook his head, "I assure you, I'm not part of your imagination. I'm as real as you, just...dead."

"Why are you here, if you're dead?" I could feel the curiosity flying through me, I was talking to a ghost, but I was acting as if I was talking to a normal person.

"I'm not sure," he taped a finger to his chin. "I died..and then I was here. But then this house wasn't even built. I don't really haunt anything, I'm just...here. Like you."

I nodded, shifting in my spot. I pushed the covers off my legs, not missing how his eyes trailed across my unclothed flesh. I knew I shouldn't have put on that skirt. I pulled down the fabric, muttering a 'pervert' as he chuckled.

"Hn. It's nothing I haven't seen before."

My face flamed, and I gaped at him. A smug smirk on his handsome face. "I knew someone was watching me bathe!" I shrieked, my hands fisting at my sides, how dare he! "You pervert!" I grabbed a pillow and chucked it at him. To my dismay, it went right though him. He raised an eyebrow in my direction. "I would totally strangle you if I could."

"I'm sure you would, but thankfully you cant."

"Aren't you going to thank me?" Youko asked after awhile.

My face twisted in confusion. "What? Why?"

"I'm the one who found the food for you." he said simply, his ears swinging in my direction, waiting on an answer.

"The chips?" He nodded. "Ohh, thanks I guess." I said, waving my hand at him.

"That's all?" he 'humph'ed and crossed his arms. "See if I unlock and open anymore doors for you."

I shrugged, standing up and walking to the window. I opened the door leading to the balcony and walked out. I leaned on the railing, not at all worried if it was stable or not. I felt Youko's spirit beside me, and I turned to him. He was looking out into the woods. A large wind came in, rusting my hair and I noticed that his didn't move an inch.

"Why do you fallow me? I always feel your eyes on me." I murmured, my eyes looking at the garden bellow us.

"You intrigue me," he whispered. "No one has ever been able to sense me, let alone see me. I wonder why?" he said mostly to himself, my ears barely catching it.

"Wanna be friends?" I asked suddenly, surprising myself and Youko.

He blinked at me, his head tilting cutely to the side. The he nodded. "Friends.." he said, as if he'd never heard it--let alone said it--before.

I looked out to the dirt road, the roaring on an engine before my family's car appeared around the corner, Kazoku's oldies music most likely blaring the speakers in the car. I looked to my side, Youko was gone. I could once again feel the sensation on his eyes on me, and I felt a comfort I hadn't felt in a long time.

A/N: why am I starting another story? I'm crazy, plain and simple. Updates will most likely come slow, I need to work more on my other story before I can do much to this one. Please Review.
