Kagome was strolling down the street on her way to meet up with Keiko, still caught up in her thoughts about a certain green-eyed kitsune.
‘I wonder what was so urgent that he had to leave immediately?’ She couldn’t help but worry over him, in regards to his job. It was just in her nature. ‘I remember Yusuke saying last night how the barrier was stronger than ever, and that the demonic activity had slowed down due to the recent Makai tournament.’ Kagome’s ki was a little on edge, but she shook it off, concluding it was because of her new youkai acquaintances. ‘After all, other than my first time at Keiko’s and yesterday, it has been two years since I’ve sensed any youkai.’
Three blocks later, she spotted Keiko at their usual table behind the front window of Café de Luca. Entering the quiet café and plopping down on the cool metal seat, she smiled at her cousin.
“Hey, Keiko-chan. Before you spout out your absurd line of questioning which I’m sure you’ve been stewing over for the last thirty minutes, let me at least get a cup of coffee first.”
“Already ordered and on its way! Now, shoot. I need details about your evening with Kurama,” said Keiko with a smile, while Kagome inwardly groaned. “He’s quite the mysterious one, ne? I don’t even think I’ve heard of him having any girlfriends or love interests, other than those mobs of fan girls!”
Kagome blanched, picturing Kurama drowning in a sea of obnoxious teenage girls trying to grab pieces of his hair and clothes. “Kurama is (sigh)… Kurama,” she said, her face lighting up at just the mention of his name.
“Oh no you don’t! There’s no way I’m going to let you off that easy. Besides, I can tell by that silly little grin on your face that you’re holding back.”
Kagome smirked. “Okay, Keiko-chan, you want details? Don’t say I didn’t warn you…”
One hour and a couple cups of coffee and blueberry muffins later, Keiko was sure that her face was now a permanent shade of tomato red. She would definitely never pry into Kagome’s sex life ever again, or at least the very erotic details of the act itself.
“…That’s when he got the call from Koenma and had to leave. He did promise we would ‘discuss our relationship’ over dinner tonight,” blabbed Kagome. “What’s the matter, Keiko-chan? Nothing to say now?” Kagome couldn’t help but laugh at her cousin’s uncomfortable, embarrassed disposition.
“I-I… t-that was some evening you had, Kago-chan. How are you walking right now? And I thought Yusuke was incorrigible! I would never place Kurama to be so vocal and vulgar!” Keiko finally answered, clearing the vivid mental pictures of Kurama and Kagome from her mind. “Oh, and you so owe me, too!”
“Hai, hai. This Saturday afternoon is on me. I’ve been prancing around like a giddy schoolgirl since Kurama left. I even find myself starting to feel nervous about tonight. I mean, just because his youkai almost marked me, doesn’t mean Kurama himself feels comfortable with a more serious relationship, right? There’s just something in his eyes though. I can tell he’s going to have me on one hell of a ride if last night was any indication of what being in a relationship with him would be like,” stated Kagome, pulling out some yen from her Betsy Johnson handbag and laying the paper down on the table.
As the pair walked to the front door of the café, Keiko sincerely replied, “I don’t suspect Kurama as being one to lead you on, Kago. He’s pretty straightforward, polite, but straightforward definitely. Plus, the sexual tension was rolling off you two the minute you exchanged greetings. Damn, horn dogs!” Both women laughed as they hugged outside to part ways.
As Kagome clung to Keiko, she paused and gasped, feeling the tingle of five, maybe six unfamiliar youki and three familiar youki. She could tell the spiritual human aura of Kuwabara was knocked out and useless. The pull felt like it was coming from the alley behind the café.
“KAGO! Hello? You still with me, Kago-chan?” Keiko yelled, shaking her cousin.
“Keiko! Go home and wait for Yusuke! Do not follow me!” Kagome replied frantically as she took off around the corner, leaving Keiko in the dust and trusting her cousin to obey.
Rounding the final corner of the building, Kagome was almost knocked back by the auras of the unfamiliar youki, malevolence oozing from them. She was right, there were five. They weren’t that big, but they sure were ugly. She could tell they were different species, too. Two tortoise-like youkai, a pair of rat youkai, and a snake youki stood surrounded by the three remaining detectives. Kagome’s eyes immediately flew to Kurama.
As if finally sensing her approach, Kurama snapped his eyes to the blue of Kagome’s.
“Kagome!” he exclaimed, just as the snake youkai also caught sight of her.
“What’s a s-s-s-sweet looking miko like you–,” he never got to finish as the rose whip sliced his head clean off his body.
Sending a look Kurama’s way, Kagome rushed to Kuwabara’s side to check for injuries. ‘Just a considerable sized lump on his head. He’ll probably be out for at least another hour. They may have their work cut out for them. That snake youkai was weak. The tortoises, however, should prove to be difficult with their thick hides and shells.’ She dragged Kuwabara as best as she could and propped him up against the brick building. Then, refocused her attention back to Kurama and the others.
Hiei was occupied with one rat youkai, while dodging the other rat. The beasts were gnashing their huge front teeth wildly each time Hiei got close enough to slice them with his sword. He was fairing well. It was clear that the rats were only keeping him occupied while Kurama and Yusuke each took on a tortoise youkai.
If it weren’t for the seriousness of the fight, Kagome would have laughed at the gesture Yusuke was making at a tortoise. He was pointing the fingers of his right hand in a fake gun-like manner. That’s when she sensed his spiritual ki charging up. Kagome was very impressed as he shot off the ‘Spirit Gun’ blast, obliterating the unsuspecting tortoise.
Kurama suddenly caught her eye. She thought he was beautiful before, but she was tempted to drag him off to some public restroom after this fight. ‘I wonder if he can produce a thornless version of that rose whip?’ He was strength, power, and grace as he slashed fiercely at the weak spots of the tortoise. After receiving multiple blows, the tortoise collapsed, his body parts sliced and falling apart.
Kagome was about to run to Kurama when she sensed a presence approaching her quickly from behind. Kurama and Yusuke must have noticed, too, because they both screamed her name at the same time.
Turning abruptly, one of the rats must of escaped Hiei because it was charging at Kagome and was currently about five feet away. Kurama ran to her with all his might, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to get there in time, and Hiei was still busy landing the killing blow to the other rat. He continued screaming for Kagome to move, run, anything, but she just stood still, almost willing for the hideous rat to collide with her.
Suddenly, the air around Kagome swirled, her wavy mass of hair floating up and her eyes turned a haunting iridescent pink as she raised her arms so that they were straight out in front of her body. She almost looked as if she was going to embrace the mad youkai charging at her. Kurama, Yusuke, and Hiei shuddered at the surge of crystal purity emitting from every pore of Kagome’s small body, but were unaffected by the waves of ki. The rat youkai never stood a chance. Within two feet of Kagome’s person, the beast was nothing but ash in the wind.
Lowering her arms and closing her eyes, Kagome pulled back her immense ki. When she opened her eyes, Kurama was directly in front of her and crushing her tiny frame to his larger one. His body thrummed and tingled delightfully from head to toe as he was blanketed by her holy aura. Kagome was thankful for his support as she leaned further into him. Peeling back from him slightly, she managed to look up into those intense green orbs before his lips crashed down on hers. The passion in that kiss rocked Kagome’s world and again, she was thankful for the support his body offered.
The rough clearing of a throat brought the two back to reality. Kagome reluctantly stepped out of Kurama’s embrace and turned towards the spectators.
“What the hell were you thinking, woman?” yelled Yusuke.
Kagome frowned and responded, “I was curious.”
Hiei snorted and disappeared.
Kurama on the other hand, was just as furious as Yusuke, though he was hiding it well for the time being.
Kuwabara remained unconscious and forgotten.
“What the hell is going on? Just who are you, anyways? We knew you were a miko, but damn! That much power has to be reported to Koenma. And where’s Keiko? I thought she was meeting you in this café?” questioned Yusuke, his eyes darkening as he realized that Keiko was supposed to be with Kagome.
“Oh, relax! We were leaving the café when I sensed your auras and the unfamiliar youki coming from behind the place! I sent Keiko home with the orders to stay there until you arrived, baka,” spat Kagome. If Yusuke wanted to challenge her over the well being of her cousin, he had another thing coming.
While Kurama was enjoying the display of Kagome’s fiery spirit, he decided to step in to deflate the argument. “Yusuke, go home to Keiko. I’m sure she is concerned about you, as well as Kagome,” he supplied.
“Fine,” he grumbled, turning away, “Damn. I better grab the idiot, too.” He slung Kuwabara’s arm over his shoulder and continued muttering to himself as he disappeared around the corner of the building.
“As for you, Kagome, what on earth were you thinking? I have to agree with Yusuke. You should not have jumped into this situation blindly and just to sate your curiosities,” remarked Kurama in a scolding manner.
Too bad Kagome wasn’t the type of girl to hang her head and accept being reprimanded like a child.
“For your information, I wasn’t just ‘sating my curiosities’, Kurama! I sensed your aura and was worried. It might sound ridiculous considering you do these things everyday, but I wanted to protect you, damnit! Kami… if something had happened,” replied Kagome, whispering the last part. “Besides, it’s been quite a while since I could use my powers. Good to know they aren’t too rusty with the lack of use!”
Kurama’s anger softened at her concern, but again bubbled to the surface at her admittance. “You weren’t sure if they would be ‘rusty’ or not? Kagome, what if your powers hadn’t been able to be summoned? There’s no way that myself, or even Hiei, would have been able to reach you in time. Do you understand? Kami, I thought you were…” and he trailed off.
“I’m fine. I knew I would be able to use my powers, I just wasn’t sure how much I’d be able to bring forth. You saw that guy! It wasn’t going to take a whole lot of ki to purify him. I’m fully capable of handling a rogue youkai or two, Kurama. Do not underestimate me,” she said heatedly as she stood nose to nose with him.
“It’s not that I underestimate you, Kagome. You know I could feel how powerful you were upon our first encounter. Just promise me you will never run blindly into a battle again. I will not risk your safety. These terms are non-negotiable. Submit to me on this, my vixen,” he pushed back.
She debated on arguing, she really did; instead, Kagome let out a pout and something that sounded remarkably like, “Insufferable, chauvinistic male youkai.”
“I understand your strong will to fight, help, and protect others, Kagome. It is one of the things I admire about you,” he said as he squeezed her hand.
“Fine. I won’t go blindly into battle, but I won’t just sit on the sidelines if I sense trouble, Kurama. You told me last night that you trust me, just as I trust you. Trust me on this. My instincts and gut feelings have never betrayed me.”
“Hai, Kagome. I do trust you. What do you say I walk you home? After all, we do have a date tonight.”
“Not so fast, fox boy! What happened the last time you ‘walked me home’, eh?” Kagome joked.
“What if I promise to keep my hands to myself? Or at least in all the appropriate places?”
‘Kami, that sexy voice will be the death of me,’ thought Kagome, then she agreed, “Very well, Kurama. Shall we?”
They walked in silence, holding hands the entire three blocks to the front of Kagome’s building, where they separated with a fiery kiss and a promise to meet again in just a few short hours.
