Disclaimer: I unfortunately do not own Inuyasha or Yu Yu Hakusho, but if I did... it would be perfect!
Well this is my debut fic, hopefully I can gain some fans. Although, I have absolutely no idea where I am really taking this fanfiction... Haha, damn my compulsive urges... Anyways, feedback and such would be appreciated, however, no flames please. I also have another idea for a Yusuke/Kagome fic, and I will post the summary at the end of the chapter. If you're nice enough to review, then I ask that you read that over, and decide which one you would like to see. I can't promise that I will put both up though. Okay, enough rambling, on with ze story!
After All Is Said And Done
Chapter One
-
Once upon a time, the world was filled with good men, and chivalry was alive. Yeah fucking right.
The woman snorted to herself, the disparaging noise in the back of her throat going unheard as her date continued to ramble on to her chest. Kagome Higurashi inwardly grimaced, when had the selection of men in Tokyo become so...minimal?
And to think, even for a moment, that she had went to high school with this boy. Yes boy, Hojo still had those boyish features, the shy smile, the same muddy brown eyes, short hair. Not quite what she was used to considering the men, er youkai, that were in the Feudal Era. Take Sesshomaru, Taiyoukai of the West for instance. Now, he was exotic. With long, luxurious silver tresses, the color of moonlight, and those smoldering golden eyes, shining like two beacons in the shadows...
Okay, she was getting a little ahead of herself.
She gazed ahead, the steady gait of her long legs leading her down the sidewalk, Hobo's, er Hojo's boring voice droning on and on. She wanted to chuckle, it seemed as though Inuyasha had influenced her quite a bit. She wondered when Hojo had become so conceded, since the moment she had (unfortunately) ran into him and inquired how he was, all he had talked about was himself.
What had happened to the sweet (a little too sweet if you asked her), caring boy that used to bring her bouquets of colorful flowers and odd presents?
And even setting aside that fact; if he was going to blabber on about himself, at least he could have the consideration to talk about something remotely interesting. Although, Kagome assumed that their interests differed greatly.
Kagome wanted to chuckle again.
Glancing obliquely to the side, her eyes flashed with askance. Hojo was such an air head, she had no idea what she was doing here. There were so many other things she could be doing.
Some god must have been looking down upon her, and sensed her emotional distress, considering that the catchy melody of her mobile drifted to her ears from the confines of her jacket pocket.
"Excuse me," she said politely, flipping the phone open and pressing it to her ear.
"Moshi, moshi?" she inquired to the person on the other end, weaving through the throng of people crowding the sidewalks, to a less populated store-front.
Yukimura Noodle Shop.
"Where are you, imouto?"
Kagome smiled, the slow, aristocratic drawl of Sesshomaru's voice reverberating through the phone and caressing her soul. Some of her chagrin ebbed away as she happily intoned, "Outside of Yukimura Noodle Shop," a grunt on the other line encouraged her to elaborate, "It's down in Sarayashiki," she continued, smiling, with a gleam in her eyes as she watched Hojo glancing around wildly for any sight of her. Slinking farther back into the shadows that the overhang created, she gave her full attention to the conversation that she was currently in.
A delicious odor wafted to her nose and she inhaled, a contented sigh escaping her lips. Perhaps she would drop in, and get some ramen. It smelled wonderful.
"Why are you down in such a seedy part of the city?" Sesshomaru questioned sharply, "What business do you have down there?"
Kagome wanted to snort, "I have no business down here, Sarayashiki just so happens to be where I ended up," she replied tersely, some annoyance filling her. Sesshomaru was always on her case, demanding to know what she was doing, where she was going, anything that regarded her social life. And although, she would admit that she didn't have much of a one because of her duties at the shrine, she wasn't about to admit that to the arrogant taiyoukai. The demon was insufferable most of the time, and quite smothering in his consistence to always be on top of everything. He didn't like surprises, but Kagome didn't want her life to be a routine.
After the good nine years she had spent in the Feudal Era, she had learned to expect nothing. She could infer, but never expect. Her life had been fast moving and lucid exhilaration back then, but her life had steadily began to wind down in the past ten months. And the miko was having a hard time adjusting, which was odd, considering she had lived life in the future for fourteen years before she had been dragged down the well and thrown into the past. Albeit, the Feudal Era had consumed her life, taking up all the time and energy that she had. And she had grown accustomed to it. She liked it.
Now life was so uninteresting, she thought she would die of the boredom. She longed to be roaming the large expanse of plains, mountains, all landforms that she could think of in the past. The freshness of the air so pure and untainted as it filled her lungs. Instead, she was stuck in a loud, dirty city, the fetid odor of the pollution seemingly coating everything that walked, surrounding her senses, defiling her thoughts.
It was on her mind constantly. What would become of her if she could not adjust? Would she gradually waste away in her desires to be back in the past, where she felt she truly belonged? The thought would of frightened the miko had she mulled over it earlier in her years, however if that be her fate then she supposed she would embrace it. Destiny had mapped out her life to be this way. Nothing could be changed, well nothing in the past.
"Imouto?" the taiyoukai growled, "You know that this Sesshomaru does not like to repeat himself. We have some important matters to discuss. I will meet you at this Yukimura Noodle Shop, in a half an hours time," Kagome's interest was piqued at that moment and she inquired eagerly, "Important matters? What important matters?! Tell me Fluffy!" There was another low, warning growl, "Just for that miko, one hour."
Before Kagome had a chance to argue, the line went dead, a steady buzzing in her ear.
"Damn it."
Glumly, Kagome tucked the mobile back into her pocket, scuffing the dirt-laden pavement with the toe of her boot. Sesshomaru really had no sense of humor. With a heavy sigh, Kagome stepped back out into the crowd, cringing when Hojo's annoying voice rang in her ears. 'Fuck' she thought darkly, she thought she had lost him.
"There you are!" he exclaimed, pushing through the people. He came up to her side, "I thought I had lost you there!"
Kagome rolled her eyes up towards the slate gray clouds looming ominously above them. It would definitely rain today, and hopefully Hojo would drown. Plastering an apologetic smile on her face, the one she had practiced just for him, she decided that she wasn't going to beat around the bush, "Sorry Hojo-kun, but I am afraid that I have to cut this short. I have to meet someone, it is rather important and cannot be post-poned," In addition to the adorable tilt of her head, and the small smile, she had the disappointment seeping out of his eyes, "That's alright, Kagome-chan, perhaps we can continue this another day?" he had stated it as a question, although Kagome knew that he intended for her to agree to his proposal.
"Perhaps," she answered vaguely.
He smiled at her, small creases by his eyes. "I'll look forward to it. Sayonara," he lifted his hand in a motionless wave and turned, strolling off into the crowd, which had Kagome kicking up an eyebrow in his wake. That had been easier than she had originally estimated.
Kagome did feel kind of sorry for the guy though, if after all these years he was still pining after her, then he seriously needed to revamp his social life. However, anything having to do with the boy didn't require any substantial concern on her part, if not any. She never intended to follow up on his offer to see him again. If she wanted to go on date, she would have no problems finding a suitable companion.
She wasn't arrogant, well not as much as Sesshomaru, but she was aware of her physical attractiveness. All the time in the Feudal Era had toned her up to perfection. She had been lucky not to be jilted with the blemishes that acne caused, leaving her skin with a healthy, ivory glow, soft as the petals of a rose. Kagome appreciated her body and all of its curves, and believed it to be a blessing from kami.
The miko sighed, wondering just what to do for the remaining time she had before Sesshomaru arrived. It wasn't a good idea to stray too far, yet people might get the wrong impression about her if they saw her loitering around. Then again, who's business was it besides her own?
"What do you mean you're working tonight?! It's Christmas Eve!"
The black-haired toushin shrugged his shoulders, frowning down at the ground. He had expected Keiko would react this way, and as much as he wanted to scream back at her like he generally would of done, he was too tired.
It was difficult trying to satisfy his fiancee and be the protector of three worlds. His obligation to the Reikai hardly ever left any time for himself. And it was slowly starting to emotionally and physically exhaust him. "It's pretty self explanatory," he responded dryly, leaning against the brick wall on the rear end of Keiko's noodle shop. He shoved his hands in his pockets, his standard scowl etched on his lips, although the hardness of his honey-brown eyes couldn't quite disguise the disappointed lurking in their depths. Keiko simply didn't understand.
She had never said it aloud, albeit Yusuke knew that she wanted him to give up his occupation as a Reikai Tentai. Their relationship had been rocky for the past few weeks, as he was spending most of his spare time defending the Ningenkai from the youkai breaching the barriers. While the toushin thought she was being selfish, she thought he didn't care about the stability of their relationship.
Raising his eyes slowly to meet hers, they locked, an awkward silence blanketing over them. As Yusuke stared into the livid eyes of the women he had loved for so many years, he suddenly didn't find her as attractive as before. She was always angry, her eyes never soft like they had used to be in high school. Only narrowed, flashing with the contempt that she felt towards his job.
"What do you want me to about it?!" he finally snapped at her, and when she winced at his harsh tone, the guilt that he usually felt didn't burn in his stomach like acid. "I don't control when youkai breach the barriers, Keiko! You know I wouldn't work tonight if it was my decision!" he muttered some choice words darkly under his breath, while her jaw worked.
The silence was considerably heavy before she whispered, almost as quiet as the wind, "Quit."
Yusuke's eyes snapped back to hers, his inner turmoil displayed openly on his face, "You know I can't do that. I won't do that. Keiko, please you have to understand that working for the Reikai makes me happy... I love what I do... I love you too, but I'm not going to make that decision. I won't choose between you and my job. And if you love me, then you'll accept that," he finished softly, wondering if this would justify the fate of their relationship.
Keiko was quiet for several long minutes, her mouth opening as if she was going to respond, but then it would close, almost like she was uncertain of her words. Yusuke felt perplexed by her actions, normally she would be quick to snap back, regardless of the intensity of their arguments. He desperately wanted to know what was going on inside of her head.
Turning away, she sauntered over to the back door of the quaint shop, wrenching it open with ample force. Yusuke knew she was crying and the guilt that had eluded him finally surfaced, hitting him square in the chest.
"Keiko, wait for a minute-"
Her fingers tightened on the doorknob, and the women offered him a grim smile, "And if you love me Yusuke, then you will do what you have to do to save our relationship," she murmured, "Otherwise, it's going to fall apart. I will leave the decision to you." Her back was to him once more and she disappeared through the door, leaving him outside, a numb feeling settling over his skin.
An ominous rumbling came from overhead, a fat drop of rain splattering on his cheek from the heavens. Perhaps someone was shedding the tears that Yusuke refused to allow himself to cry?
They weren't exactly over, albeit the chances that Yusuke could smooth out their relationship once again seemed very slim. She was asking him to choose between her and the one of the only things he was passionate about. Yusuke couldn't imagine his life without both of them being a part of it. And no matter which he chose, he was still the loser.
His shoes dragged along the asphalt as he walked away, rounding the corner and continuing down the long, dank alleyway that would lead him around front, his eyes downcast in spite of himself. The rain had evolved into a slight drizzle. Rain ran down his neck, and his slicked back hair fell into his dull eyes. He passed the store, wrapped up in his thoughts, and ignoring the feeling that someone was watching him very intensely.
Well... that was chapter one, hopefully the length was adequate enough, because I tried to add in a lot of description about how they were feeling and such. More so Kagome and Yusuke's as they are the main characters. Anyways, please read and review, tell me whatcha think. Oh and here's the summary to another story I was thinking of writing.
Perfect Candidate (If this stories goes up, I might change the title)
Summary: Yusuke is now the ruler of Makai, although a tiny factor had been overlooked when signing the contract, that is now causing some big problems. He is required to bear a heir in one year, and the mother must be spiritually oriented.
I think that's about all I wanted to cover, so once more I will ask you to read and review. Thanks a bunch.
