Chapter Six
Hiei was tempted to write it all off to delusions induced by what Masakazu had done to her but he couldn't. She didn't sound delusional in the least but where was the Jewel if she was the great Priestess of legend? `And why would Midoriko send her here after sacrificing so much?' He returned to his room to think this over some. As he sat on the bed he realized that it would indeed make sense in some ways.
The Priestess that had reformed the Jewel was unlike any other before her the legends had said. She had befriended not only youkai but hanyou as well, not allowing human prejudice to interfere with her friendships. Could that be why she had been wanting to help him? Hiei wasn't so certain, the lack of her attempting to put an arrow through him could have been because she had known he was unable to defend himself. The greater threat would have obviously come from Ryuji and the others so logically she would have tried for them first. But the look in her eyes had told him differently, she had been trying to help him. He sighed, no closer to an answer than when he began. He really needed to talk to the girl but he doubted that she would open up to him, not after what had just happened anyway.
Deciding that he wasn't getting anywhere with his thoughts at the moment he laid down with his back to the wall. If someone was going to intrude while he was sleeping he'd be ready for them. After he learned more about the girl and her capabilities it would be time to set his plans into motion. He needed to procure a weapon and secure it somewhere. Masakazu would kill him if he saw him with a sword, he had been most displeased to discover that Hiei knew how to use one and from then on took extra precautions to keep him unarmed. It would not matter in the end though, Masakazu would still die. It was only a matter of time.
It seemed like he had been asleep mere minutes when he slowly opened his eyes and took in his surroundings. It was an unfamiliar setting to him, it was obvious that he was no longer in his room. Instead he was in a cave which he had never seen before. Standing quickly he scanned the area for any potential threats. He could feel a great power in the cave with him, but there was something different. His eyes widened with realization as he held out his hand and called the fire forth. The wards were gone, he was no longer restrained.
Smirking he walked further into the cave where he felt the power source he had noticed earlier. After everything that had happened he needed to vent his rage on something, this would give him the perfect opportunity. He stopped suddenly at the sight before him, a giant stone statue comprised of what looked to be a mass of demons and a lone woman. It was an unusual sculpture to say the least. He paced forward with one hand raised, as his fingers ghosted across the surface, a hollow voice echoed behind him causing him to turn around.
"Welcome to my resting place Forbidden One." The Great Midoriko stood before him regarding him calmly ignoring the look of rage that he directed towards her. She knew of his past, just as she knew that he despised his name. But her purpose for calling him here was not to make friends and converse over a cup of tea.
To say he was pissed would be an understatement. He wasn't sure of who this woman was that stood before him but it was obvious that she knew of who he was. He was uncertain of how she knew that, very few people know of him although when Masakazu and the others fell that would be sure to change. "Who are you and how do you know of me?"
Midoriko smiled slightly, knowing she had managed to anger him. It was of little consequence, he was sure to become so again long before this was over and she relinquished control of his dream. "I know much about you Hiei, my name is Midoriko and I have called you here to speak to you about Kagome."
Hiei was surprised that he was standing before the Priestess of legend but he would not allow it to show. Questions raced through his head, he knew the woman was dead so this was likely to be nothing more than a dream but at the same time it had a feeling of reality to it. He knew then that she was controlling his dream but for what purpose remained to be determined. When he awoke he would still be in that hell hole, he'd still be warded and both his and the girl's lives would still be in danger. But this instance just solidified his thoughts that the girl was indeed the Priestess who's name had been lost and for some reason Midoriko had indeed sent her into her current situation. Fury ran through every nerve as he thought on this piece of information. How she was still alive after all that time was a mystery begging to be solved. At least one question had been answered, he had her name. "What about her?"
Midoriko felt the anger flaring off of the Hybrid Apparition as he realized who she was. When his aura unconsciously lashed out at her she sent a wave of purification along the edge of it. The warning was not enough to injure him, however she did take note of how he never even flinched as it brushed against him. His life up until this point had hardened him to pain, he would be able to withstand trials that would easily kill lesser youkai. "You are aware of who she is are you not?" She wasn't going to give him all of the answers, she just wanted to be certain that he would do his part when it came to the prophecy. But she had to be careful in how she pushed him into it. He would be unwilling to it just because it was foretold, he had to have a reason for it happening. She prayed to the Gods that they would forgive her for how she was to accomplish this. Perhaps one day they, and Kagome would forgive her.
Hiei merely scowled at her and waited for her to continue. He wasn't going to be the one to ask the questions. It would be too easy for her to steer the line of questioning to avoid anything she didn't want revealed. Instead he would allow her to talk about what she wished and see what she said, his questions could come then when she had no alternative but to answer.
Midoriko sighed, she expected this reaction from him after all. Fate had chosen an interesting partner for the child of destiny, on any other terms she doubted that they would come to accept each other. Kagome would be willing but it was unlikely that the Forbidden Child would have given her a chance. "Kagome is the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama, however the Jewel has been sealed away where it can never be used for evil purposes again. She is from another era, easily passing through the gates of time. She's touched upon the past already, her journeys have carried her here and when she is finished she will again find herself home in the future."
Hiei stared at her digesting what she had just said. Parts of it were not adding up, if Kagome was still the Guardian of the Shikon no Tama then where was it? If it was sealed away permanently it no longer needed a guardian to keep it safe. The Priestess was giving him half truths but he needed more of the pieces of the puzzle before the picture became clear. The questions of her age were easily answered if she was a time traveler but how was that possible? To his knowledge it had been attempted many times but none had succeeded. "How did she get here?"
Midoriko was surprised he didn't ask about the Jewel instead. Not many demons would give up the opportunity to learn of it's whereabouts. This proved to her that Fate had indeed chosen well. "Kagome completed her task of reforming the Jewel. When she made the wish to set my soul free from the Jewel, her presence was no longer required in the past. There were two options left to her. Bring her here and allow her to take her part in the prophecy or to take her home. I brought her here. It was her destiny to try and save you, just as it was destiny that deemed it necessary for her to be captured." Midoriko waited for his reaction to this little bit of news.
The way she said it stunned Hiei. Never had he expected such a blunt answer from the woman. She had known that Kagome would be captured, raped and beaten and yet she had still brought her. He could not believe that a Priestess would be so cold, so indifferent to what was happening. In all the tales they were said to be kind and caring, never placing an innocent in danger purposely yet she had admitted that she had done just that. What bothered him more was Midoriko showed absolutely no remorse for what she had done. Prophecies be damned, you did not turn on your allies like that! "So let me get this straight. Kagome is the Guardian of a Jewel that had no business being in existence but it was because of you. She makes a wish on the damned thing, freeing you from your prison and then because of some prophecy you take her and bring her here to be Masakazu's fuck toy. You cold, fucking bitch."
Midoriko ignored the insult he threw at her knowing that he had every right to call her that. Everything that he had said was true, even if he didn't know the reasoning behind it. But she wouldn't tell him of what was to come in the future, they had to do it on their own. Allowing him to know Kagome had been betrayed in such a fashion would give them something in common. "She tried to save you Hybrid, I doubt you'd be so insulting if she had succeeded."
"I can fucking take care of myself! Don't try to pass this off on me. Perhaps if you had trained her better she would not have been captured. If you had taken her home she'd be perfectly safe now. You are the one to have condemned her to a life of hell." He wanted nothing more in this instance than to attack the Priestess in front of him and tear her throat out for what she had done but he knew it would do no good. She wasn't alive to begin with and even if she was it wouldn't be a wise move to do so without being armed.
"Apparently not, if you were in such a position for her to be willing to risk herself to save you. Though I am not surprised to know that she would do so, she always has been too kind for her own good. She would not have left you there regardless of the circumstances." Her time was drawing to a close but she had accomplished what she had wanted. The Apparition would look on Kagome with something other than indifference now. It would be difficult for her but Kagome would now have someone to lean on when she needed it. If she didn't, there was no hope of her surviving this trial. Hiei was a vital piece of the puzzle whether he desired to be or not.
"She is foolish then. A typical human, never thinking before rushing into something." Even though the words were said he knew that they weren't true. A typical human from what he had been told did not give a damn about anyone other than themselves. Few would have attempted to help him at the risk of their own lives, instead they would have turned from the scene allowing Ryuji and the others to continue. She had done her best to protect him, and now he would return the favor by doing what he could for her. Now all he had to do was convince her that he was not going to hurt her.
"Never think that she is typical, Hiei. There are things she has survived that would have killed even you. Be grateful that she felt you worthy of her care. She is the only Priestess who would have attempted to save you, any other would have purified you without a second thought along with the others in that group." Midoriko faded as did the cave as her last words rang out. She had given him much to think on, it was now up to him to decide how he was going to proceed.
Hiei watched her go and closed his eyes. When he reopened them he realized that he was back in his room and awake. It had been no normal dream, he could still feel the purification burning along his senses. 'So everything that was said was true.' He shook his head and stood up to leave the room. By the feel of his internal clock he estimated a few hours had passed, Kagome was likely to be awake and terrified. Walking quietly out the door he made his way to the kitchen to steal some bread and meat. She was likely to be hungry and Masakazu was likely to keep her starving, making it that much easier to break her. He couldn't allow that to happen. With his decision made, he walked into the corridor and began his task of remaining undetected while he carried out his self-appointed task.
