Ryuji decided that while attempting to breathe with broken ribs was painful, attempting to breathe with a bitchy wolf demoness pressing all of her weight on those same broken ribs was excruciating. He could feel the flush that was on his face as he tried to draw in as much air as he could hold under the circumstances, if she didn't let up soon he knew he was certain to pass out and that was not a prospect that he was fond of. He'd be damned if he had survived all that he had during the quest for the scepter only to be killed by a pack of wolves out for vengeance. He knew that the only reason that his life had been spared so far was because they were interested in Masakazu's latest pet. If he played his cards right that knowledge would be his ticket to escaping this situation as well as the opportunity to rid himself of the crow.
He stared up at the wolf bitch defiantly and instantly regretted it as he felt her knee pressed down further into his injured ribs. The razor sharp claws of her hand dug into his skin, letting him know just how tenuous his position was at the moment. Blood began to run in thin lines down his neck contrasting sharply with the paleness of his skin. Knowing he had no choice he averted his eyes from hers as much as his limited movement would allow in a show of submission. The tension of her hand eased slightly and he turned his head further, baring more of his neck to her. He was going to need to be careful if he wanted to live long enough to go through with his plans. This demoness wanted answers which he could give her. He had no reason to lie after all they could accomplish something he needed, the weakening of the Crow. The same demon that he was silently cursing for having him involved in this mess.
Aiko's voice broke into his thoughts once more. She wanted answers, it was the only reason that Ryuji was still among the living. That could be easily remedied if he did not cooperate however. "I'll ask you one last time, fail to answer and I will not hesitate to take your life. Where is the priestess?" Her lip curled upwards in anger at the mere thought of the woman who helped to take her beloved mate away from her. She refused to give the woman a name, in her eyes the Priestess had no honor. She would perish just like all of the others that stood in the way of the pack. Her mate had always been soft when it came to the girl and would not tolerate any to speak against her. That softness had become his downfall. In her mind Kouga should have killed her the instant they met instead of allowing her to live. Miko's were mortal enemies of all demon kind and she had finally accomplished her goal. Kouga was dead, it did not matter what the circumstances were behind it. All that mattered was that the Priestess would die by her hands.
Ryuji tried speaking but his voice came out as a raspy whisper. Aiko released the stranglehold that she had on him, her claws freeing themselves of his skin. He took a deep breath, resisting the urge to cough knowing that her patience was at an end. "I have not seen her in many weeks but I know where she is. I can take you to her... If that would please you." Ryuji hated the thought of groveling to these lower class demons but it was his own smug arrogance that had landed him into their hands in the first place. He knew that overconfidence could kill him, he only hoped that today was not the day. Aiko's growl told him that was not the answer that she had been looking for and immediately her hold tightened once more, no doubt she did not care for the idea of his continued presence.
"If you haven't seen her in weeks then why is her scent covering you?" Aiko leaned closer to him, not caring about the amount of pain that he was in. She inhaled deeply taking in the Priestesses hated scent and smirked. "I see. So, the bitch has decided to play the whore has she? I'm not surprised." She caught the look of anger from the demon beneath her, knowing she had struck a nerve with him. "Tell me, is she a good fuck? Is that why you are protecting her? Why you would lower yourself to rut with the likes of her is beyond me but that is not my concern. You will tell me what we need to know before you die, know that we have no need for a guide. We are the hunters and the Priestess is now our the prey. We will not stop until she is dead."
Ryuji knew that he needed to think fast if he was going to survive this. He needed to dispel any ideas this wolf bitch had that he was fond of the girl and fast. "I have no reason to protect her, she has become nothing more than a whore and I have merely followed the orders I have been given in breaking her as well as healing her so she is well enough to continue to serve my Master." Ryuji waited in hopes that this would be enough to distract the demoness from ending his life. While he wanted nothing more than for her to take her leave he knew that thought was futile.
Aiko grinned as she contemplated his words. The Priestess was broken, enslaved into a life she had been protected from in the past by Kouga and the others. Her eyes lit up, thinking about all the possible reasons that the girl would need a healer. If it weren't for the fact that Kouga was dead she would have been tempted to leave her in her prison but it was not to be. Yet she still didn't know where the girl was and the demon below her was the ticket to finding her, as well as more entertainment. If it was true that he was a healer then the girl's death could be drawn out for an extended period of time. Yes, she would enjoy making he suffer for the crimes she had committed. Briefly she wondered how the girl had come to be in such a state but it wasn't important so long as her abilities were contained. "You know she holds great power, no doubt you have tasted it. So tell me, how is she contained? I have no doubts she could destroy you easily if you are telling the truth."
Ryuji winced as her claws came up to his face and caressed the skin. It was hard enough to raise welts but not enough to draw blood. He knew that he had her attention now, he just needed to keep it. "She's bound, the bracelets won't allow her to use any of her abilities. She's nothing more than a weak human as long as she wears them, that's how we are still alive even after all we've done to her." By the gleam in her eye's Ryuji was almost positive that she was going to want him to go into details about what had happened to her.
Perhaps another time she would question him as to what they had done, assuming that Ryuji proved his worth which remained to be seen. "A healer you may be. A servant I am not so certain but it is doubtful that you are anything near simple." Her glowed as she stared down at him. She would be able to sense a lie should he be foolish enough to tell one but he could twist his words around. She had to know for certain, should he be attempting to deceive her he would never see the light of another day. "Kaito, come here." Her voice was commanding and the young male lept up to do her bidding. She specifically chose him for the lower rank that he held, one of the outcasts that lived on the edges of the pack. Should this experiment fail it would be no great loss to them. Viciously she lashed out at him once he was within range of her claws, his clothing and skin parting instantly on impact. The young male gasped and fell to his knees, frantically trying to keep his intestines from spilling out on the ground. Aiko stood, releasing Ryuji from his position on the ground and glared down at him. "You will heal him now or I will kill you. Make your decision."
Ryuji attempted to pull himself to his feet but the pain in his chest would make no allowances for such a move. Instead he managed to crawl over to the dying wolf demon, darkness clouding his vision with every movement. Quickly he pushed the male onto his back, ignoring the cry of pain that escaped his lips as he did so. His hands moved quickly, carefully pushing the organs back into the body that laid before him making sure they went back into their proper positions. Hot blood coated his hands but he paid it no attention, intent only on healing the demon before him. Once he was certain all was as it should be he allowed his energy to flow from his hands. He cared not for the amount of pain this Kaito was in, he had such fine control over his healing abilities that he could make this process as painful as he desired and he did just that taking his frustrations about the situation out on his patient.
Kaito screamed in agony as Ryuji's energy ripped through him and forced his flesh to heal. Aiko looked on, unconcerned with the process merely waiting on the outcome. The screams continued to echo through the air as Ryuji continued his work, sweat beginning to pour off of his brow. Once the final slices were healed he looked up at Aiko. He concealed the smile that wanted to come out, yes he had healed this demon but he had done nothing to prevent the infection that would certainly spread throughout his body. It would take days, maybe even weeks for it to claim his life but eventually Kaito would die and there was nothing that Aiko could do to stop it.
"I see. So you were telling the truth about that though I must say your control is lacking if you cannot perform without causing more pain then the initial injury." Aiko watched his expression, she suspected that he had done that part on purpose but there was no way for her to prove that suspicion. His expression gave away nothing but from what she had seen of his skills he could prove to be useful after all. She smirked as she watched Ryuji once more try to pull himself to his feet, this time coming close to succeeding. "My my this will never do. You will learn your proper place among us!" Effortlessly she swept his feet out from under him, enjoying the grunt as he hit the ground. "I never said for you to rise." Her look turned contemplative as she watched him gasp for air. It was obvious that his ribs were still broken, why had he not begun to heal himself? He would have had the perfect opportunity to do so while he was working on Kaito's injuries. The only reason she could come up with was that he suffered from the inability to heal himself. She filed this information away for later use. "Why would your Master let such a prized healer walk away from his lair?"

Ryuji stared at the ground while he answered her, unwilling to show her just how furious he was with her at the moment. "As I said I am also a servant. He commanded me to retrieve something for him." He glanced over to his pack, making sure that the scepter was still there but the action went unnoticed. He knew the scepter would be useless to this pack but that didn't mean that he wanted to attempt fighting for it at the moment.
"And have you done his bidding?" Aiko's eyebrows rose slightly as she asked her question. It was obvious to her that this Dragon was someone important if he was allowed to insist on the breaking of the Priestess, therefore she was wary about anything he had been sent to retrieve. She had never been a thief, objects really holding no interest for her but at the same time she would not allow an enemy to possess anything that could bring harm to the pack.
Ryuji felt like cursing, he knew she was going to ask that. He had no choice but to answer. "Yes. That golden rod was what I was sent for." He gestured vaguely over to the object sticking out of his pack. If he acted like it was of no great importance then perhaps they wouldn't examine it too closely. The power within it was still dormant, it was unlikely they would sense anything from it. It would look like it was more ornamental than useful.
Aiko walked over to the pack and plucked the Scepter up off of the ground. Her eyes scanned it for any signature of power but found nothing unusual about it. Her lip curled upwards in disgust before tossing it back down on the ground. Her opinion of Ryuji's master lowered even further. Men always sought ways to display their greatness to the world whether it was through the amount of slaves they owned, clothing and jewelry or the dwelling they lived in. "You may live, for now. But realize that I do not trust you. Any man willing to turn on his own master to save his own skin is not to be believed entirely. Heal yourself now." She wanted to know if her suspicions were correct about his healing ability and there was no time like the present. If her thoughts were correct then controlling him would be easier then expected. She had no doubts that she would kill him eventually but for now he had information that would come in handy.
Ryuji forced back the growl that wanted to spill forth. This was not something that he had wanted to reveal about himself but it would seem that he no longer had any choice. "If I could I would have already done so, it is a limitation of my own abilities. I cannot heal myself." Ryuji kept his eyes trained on the ground near her feet, missing the look of joy that crossed Aiko's eyes.
Already thoughts of how she planned to torture him had crossed her mind. By her very nature she always looked down on those that she deemed weaker than herself, having grown up in her father's pack she had quickly learned that the weak fell quickly and were nothing to be mourned over should they die. Kouga had managed to temper the blood lust in her for centuries but now that he was gone it had free reign once more. "I see. Tell me, how far are we from this Master of yours and the woman I seek?"
"Six days maybe five depending on the pace set." Ryuji knew it could be done quicker but he still needed a little time to form a plan. With this new set of complications it changed things and he would need to adapt. Already his mind was mapping out possible routes to take that would gain him the time that he needed.
Aiko sneered down at him, something he had said didn't ring true but she couldn't pinpoint what. It was entirely possible that it would be delayed because of his current condition. "Draw a map of where she and your master can be found. Include the surrounding areas." She watched as Ryuji's fingers began the task, scratching a crude map in the dirt. He paid special attention to the lair, making sure to point out the cage and Masakazu's private chambers. He answered all the questions that she asked, becoming more certain with each passing moment. He shouldn't even have to lift a finger, he was positive they would do all the work for him by killing everyone inside the cave.
Aiko looked down at the map before swiping it away with her foot. She stared hard at Ryuji, wanting to make sure that he had drawn things right. "Draw it again, just like last time." If there was one thing that she was known for it was her impeccable memory. She watched as once more he began to make the map in the dirt, however there were changes this time that she was positive weren't there before. She sat down on the ground and watched, waiting to see just how much of it had been altered, her hand closing around a the hilt of a dagger concealed in her clothing. She waited until he was sufficiently distracted before removing it. "Show me where is this cage again." As Ryuji's hand stretched out to point to the location on the map she moved quickly, embedding the blade deeply within his hand and pinning it to the ground. Ryuji stared at his hand in surprise as she yanked the dagger out of his flesh. "I do not tolerate mistakes, you will draw the map a third time and I suggest you get it right." Ryuji held his bleeding hand to his chest as he hurriedly drew the map a third time, this time making sure it was correct. He would not make the same mistake again.
~Back in the cage of Masakazu's Lair~
Hiei looked down at the girl in his arms and for the first time in his life he was truly content. He no longer worried about the extent of her feelings, she had made them completely clear to him through her words and actions. He had finally found the one thing he had hoped to have, yet buried deep within his heart fearing it was asking to much. Love, such an elusive feeling to grasp onto and now it was his. It radiated off of her with every breath that she took, every touch that they shared. He had yet to take her for his mate knowing that such an action at the present time would be suicide for the both of them but regardless, they were forever bound together due to the circumstances they had endured and for that he was thankful. Whether Masakazu liked it or not, he had given the both of them something priceless and they would never turn from each other. He had been afraid that she would avoid his touch after their first time together, he wouldn't have blamed her if she had. She had been through so much already that he hesitated in inflicting more on her yet she had been there for him each time that his desires became to strong to control.
He had done his best to avoid hurting her, and his inner youkai had calmed greatly once it realized that she was there for him if he needed her. He had tried to ensure that she would enjoy herself through each of their encounters yet at the same time he was aware it would be a long time before she would truly get any pleasure out of their joining. She had even told him that it was enough for her to know that he cared about her and didn't want to cause her pain. Even now they lay together, legs intertwined enjoying the closeness that came afterwards. The smell of sex hung heavily in the air, no doubt it carried out into the hallway underneath the door. Hopefully it would be enough for Masakazu and he wouldn't intrude on their time together. The crow believed that her being taken by her one friend would destroy her and now nothing could be further from the truth. If anything they were drawing from each others strength. Hiei ran his fingers through her hair enjoying the feel of it. The ebony locks caressed her skin, covering much of her body from his view but it only served to make her look more desirable to him. He could feel his body beginning to respond and tried to ignore the growing ache. A few more days at most and his cycle would be over, things could return to normal. Or as normal as they could be anyway. He knew that Kagome had to have felt his body stirring but she made no move content to let him decide if he needed to sate his lust with her body. The level of trust she gave him touched him deeply, on levels he had never thought possible. His arms wrapped around her body as he buried his nose in her hair. Neither moved for the longest time, preferring to enjoy this contact while it lasted.
Eventually though Kagome decided that it was time for them to talk, she needed to know some things and the only time she would be certain of his answers was while he was calm like this. She knew he desired her but it wasn't the driving force that it had been. She propped herself up on one arm, her hair spilling over her shoulder and onto his chest as she looked down into his eyes. She wondered at the desire she saw there, held firmly in check. It was not the normal lust that they had held but something else entirely. A longing that she couldn't place, but she knew that she had nothing to fear from him. Nothing to fear of a physical nature anyway, emotionally was a whole different story and she needed to know. As much as she loathed the idea of changing the atmosphere of the cell, the questions she held just would not go away and the only one who could ease her mind was Hiei. "What is going to happen between us?" As soon as the question left her lips she wished that she could take it back.
Hiei closed his eyes, somehow he had known that she would need to know soon. What answer could he possibly give her? He wasn't even certain if he was going to survive the upcoming fight. When he opened them again he stared into Kagome's eyes, not missing how she was fighting back the tears that threatened to fall. His hand came up and caressed her cheek in reassurance, wiping away the one tear that had escaped. "I haven't thought of much besides killing Masakazu." He knew that she was asking was more then just the present time, truthfully he wanted more as well. He had never been patient to begin with and it was a struggle to keep himself in check each time they joined. It was always a fight to keep himself from joining their souls together, becoming mates binding themselves for an eternity. She wanted to know what they would be to each other when all of this was finally over and they had achieved the freedom they longed for. At the same time, he was no fool Midoriko's words had left him no illusions to cling to. She was not meant to remain in this time, eventually she would have to go home somehow and it was up to him to get her there.
Kagome wasn't about to allow herself to be put off though, she knew that he understood what he was asking. It had nothing to do with the time frame, she wanted reassured that he had no intentions of leaving her. "And after? Please Hiei, I need to know." Her voice wavered with emotion, she knew that if he turned her away that she had nothing more to live for. He had become her world, the one person that she could depend on and she loved him. She couldn't just let him walk away from her, her heart would shatter if he tried. It didn't matter that he was a demon, nor did it matter what kind of demon he was. Specifics like that were immaterial, she'd personally kill anyone who tried to keep them apart. Another tear fell only to be wiped away as she waited for his answer. It hurt to know that he had only thought of killing Masakazu.
He hated doing this to her but he refused to lie to her even if his own words were shredding his heart now. It would only hurt her more in the end if he did. "Afterwards I will see you home." The words came out as a mere whisper but he knew that she had heard him anyway as she pulled away from him, wrapping her arms around her knees. Hiei was at a loss for what to do or say, he couldn't stand seeing her like this. Tentatively he touched her shoulder hoping to comfort her. She should be happy at the idea of going home, the Makai was no place for her even he knew that. She'd be in constant danger from demons wanting to kill her just because of what she was. It would kill him to send her back but it was for the best. He also knew that if he had a date, he could find her in the future. He would wait for her, while to her only a few minutes would have passed.
Kagome felt the way that his hand shook as he touched her and she turned abruptly throwing herself into his arms. There was no hesitation as he held her so there had to be something that she could do. She wouldn't let him just walk out of her life, she knew that he had feelings for her so why would he do this? "No, that's not good enough Hiei. I will not leave without you, if I have to go you're coming with me!" She put as much force into her words as she could muster but they still fell flat. She promised herself that she would not leave him alone, he would be just as hunted as she would in this world and while he was strong she was not going to take the chance of losing him. Her stubborn streak, long thought to have been destroyed flared to life as she made her decision. If he truly loved her then he would agree to this. She would see Masakazu die and then they could begin their lives together. Her previous experiences with demons told her that they never could see past their own way of thinking even if it was flawed. Then again, that was a trait of most male species demon or otherwise.
Hiei knew that she was set on this course but would she be able to accomplish it? He wasn't even certain how she was getting home yet, the possibility of him being able to follow her was slim. Especially if the Reikai became involved like he feared, as soon as they were outside of the barrier and the bonds removed no doubt they would sense her. It remained to be seen as to whether or not they would destroy him because of what had happened to her if they were found together. It was best not to think about it, for now he would try to reassure her some. "Masakazu must be destroyed before we can even think about what comes next. I am sorry but it must be that way. I can not think of tomorrow until this day is finished first." His heart wasn't entirely into the words, they sounded hollow even to him. It was becoming more difficult looking into her eyes by the moment.
Kagome looked up into his eyes, knowing that he was close to giving her what she wanted. She could see it in his eyes, he wanted to be with her but something was holding him back. Slowly she closed the distance between them and pressed a light kiss on his lips before pulling back slightly. "Please Hiei, please promise me we will be together. I can't lose you, not now, not ever." This might not have been the best time to discuss it but it had to be done. She knew that he would live up to his word, if he promised her then he wouldn't break it.
Her breath ghosted along his lips and he knew that he was lost. He couldn't bring himself to be angry with her for what she was doing. He knew that this was what she truly wanted and it was being done out of love. He looked into her eyes and watched as her body began to tremble. She was close to a breakdown and there was only one thing that would stop it. He sighed, no longer able to bear to witness her pain, pain that was his own as well. "I promise. One way or another we will be together."
Kagome smiled, relieved that things would be okay between them. He would not go back on his word and neither would so. "I promise, I will always be with you Hiei." She allowed him to lower her gently to the ground once more, taking up the position they held before this conversation had ever started. His words warmed her heart and she once more felt content that everything would be okay.
He watched her closely as she snuggled into his side. How a mere human had managed to catch his heart he would never understand but she had done it. "I don't want you to leave. When we are free from this hell, I promise I won't leave your side." He watched as she smiled hearing his words, his heart had finally managed to break free voicing what he had kept hidden inside. Even though it felt right, it still struck him as extremely odd to hear those words coming from him. He watched her as she drifted off into a peaceful sleep, her breathing evening out.
Occasionally she would nuzzle against his neck as if to reassure herself that he was still there and he responded by holding her closer. He didn't know what the future held for them but they would face it together. First things first they needed to deal with Masakazu. It was as if the thought of his name caused him to appear, his cold voiced echoed through the room. Immediately Kagome jerked out of her sleep, nearly throwing herself against a wall in an effort to get away from the Crow. Her eyes darted frantically around the room in an effort to find where he was. Hiei was up an instant later, standing defensively in front of her not caring in the least that he was nude.
"I'm disappointed in you Shadow, I expected to find that you'd have the bitch beneath you at every opportunity. Instead I find you two embracing like mates. It's disgusting, have you no instincts boy? Maybe I should show you how you should treat her seeing how you can't do things right on your own." Masakazu's voice dropped to a chilling level as he stepped out of the shadows and looked at the two of them. He watched as Kagome's knees gave out and she sank to the floor anticipating what was to come.
"You won't touch her!" Hiei's voice came out as a growl, what more could this twisted bastard want? Masakazu's entire plan was for him to have sex with her and he had done so. But he knew that he had wanted more than that, he had wanted Hiei to tear her up badly enough that she would never seek him out for comfort again. Regardless of what the Crow wanted, it wasn't going to happen.
"Who said anything about me touching her Shadow? After all, your screams are exquisite when you beg me to fuck you. It's been far to long my pet." Masakazu stepped towards Hiei, intent on dragging him out of the cell and taking him to the bedroom. He smiled cruelly at the both of them, perhaps he should start out here instead. After all, it would hurt her terribly to see her lover taken so brutally in front of her if the look she was giving him was any indication.
Author's Note: I feel the need to respond to one reviewer's question. I am well aware of the difference between the terms Rut and Heat. I used to show dogs extensively and it's become second nature to use the term heat cycle. As to why others use it, I can't say. I use them interchangeably even if it's not the correct terminology, though I hesitate to say that rut is an appropriate term for a demon's fertility either but it's not something I have a strong desire to debate. Rut tends to be used in reference to hooved animals, the deer family in particular, just as the term Musth is used to indicate elephants. One other thing I'd like to correct is the assumption that all male animals are fertile 100% of the time which is not the case. One example I can give off the top of my head is the case of male wolves. Their fertility window is generally between early December to early April. It's one of the indicators used to validate the records on the percentage of wolf that is in wolf hybrid pedigrees. I can give websites to use to double check the validity of this if necessary. Anyhow, glad that you liked the story otherwise. Eventually I may go back and change the terminology used but at the moment it's not a necessity.
