Chapter 3: Payback
Sango held her adopted sister's lifeless body in her arms, cradling her even though she knew that Kagome was dead. Her heart had long stopped beating, the arrow running through it preventing it from pumping life giving blood to the rest of her body. Sango wasn't aware of anything else. Not Miroku, whose hand was on her shoulder as he cried. And not poor little Shippo who sobbed openly and loudly over the lost of his second mother.
“Why do you mourn her? She was worthless, nothing. Just a shadow of myself.” A voice said from behind them.
Sango instantly recognized the voice and held Kagome tighter. “You're wrong. Kagome was pure and a better person than you'll ever be!” Laying the dead girl gently on the ground, the demon slayer grabbed her giant boomerang. “You think that you're so much better than her, yet you weren't and you knew that. That's why you killed her!” Her voice rose higher and higher until she was screaming at the dead priestess. “You killed her, because she was something you could never be again, alive!” She hurled Hiraikotsu as hard as she could at the walking corpse.
There was a flash of red and the giant boomerang flew off target, deflected by non other than Inuyasha himself. “What the hell do you think you're doing?” He stood protectively in front of Kikyo, his hand on his sword.
“She killed Kagome!” Sango screamed, tears flowing freely down her face. “And you don't even care do you? Kagome did everything for you! She saved you from that spell put onto you by the dead bitch you're trying to protect! She gave up every chance of a normal life to come here and complete the jewel!”
Inuyasha stared blankly at the angry slayer before him, “So?” He pulled out the Tetsusaiga, the fang of destruction. “What?” The half-demon growled in irritation at his blade.
Sango smiled. “Your great sword won't transform for you! That thing standing behind you is not human, so the Tetsusaiga will not transform to protect her! She's dead and Kagome was alive!”
A flash of orange whizzed by Sango, and realizing what it was, she reached out grabbing it quickly. “Let me go!” Shippo cried out in anguish. “Let me GO! He deserves to die, he didn't stop Kikyo, he just let her die!” Shippo's sobs broke Sango's heart.
“Oh well, if my sword won't work I still have my claws.” Inuyasha said, running at a full sprint towards them. “Iron Reaver Soul Stealer!”
********
She was aware of nothing. The thick darkness surrounded her, just like before. She slowly began to become aware of voices, loud sad voices that she recognized. One voice made her stomach twist uncomfortably. Her eyes flickered open just in time to see him. The one person who had held her heart for years and then broke it. She watched in horror as he ran towards her friends, his claws extended. She couldn't stand to see them die, so she concentrated her power and pushed it out of her body. A huge wave of pink energy flew from her seemingly lifeless body and headed towards her friends.
Inuyasha hit the pink barrier at a full sprint. The barrier bent in like rubber then flung Inuyasha far away like a slingshot. Kagome smiled, wincing as she did so. Weakly she reached up to touch the spot where the arrow had pierced her flesh. It hurt, very badly, almost feeling like she had had a heart attack. “Hey guys…” All three of her companions turned to her flabbergasted. “A little help would be appreciated…”
The look on their faces was quite hilarious, and Kagome wished she had a camera with her, or the energy to hold a camera. Then, almost as one, they all moved toward her hugging her with tears running down their faces.
“Kagome, h-how?” Shippo asked as he gently touched her face. “You were dead!” His fear and sadness had diminished and was now replaced by curiosity.
She smiled slightly at her kit. “The Shikon no Tama has chosen its master. I guess it decided that its rightful guardian was worth keeping alive.” Kagome smirked as she said it, feeling the half of the jewel pulse in agreement from her neck. She had directed that statement to the dead priestess behind Inuyasha. Right now Kikyo looked as if Kagome had hit her across the face. She struggled to a sitting position, the jewel urging her on. Yes, she could do this. She would make her stand against Inuyasha and his dead bitch.
“Don't Kagome! You're injured!” Miroku said trying to gently push her back down.
He didn't understand. No one could. She needed to prove herself and stare down Inuyasha, then he would see that she was stronger than Kikyo could ever hope to be. She knew in her heart that Inuyasha would still love Kikyo and not her, but as long as she stood up to him it wouldn't matter. She struggled to her feet, gently putting her hand on Miroku when he tried to help her. No, she had to do this on her own. She did, she stood up, on shaking legs and a broken heart.
“So, where do we go from here?” Kagome asked, swaying slightly on her feet. “I never did anything to either of you, and yet both of you seem to want me dead.” Her voice was cool and calm, too calm to have come from someone who had just been shot in the heart with an arrow. “I tried so hard to help you Inuyasha. But all you did was push me away, insult me, and mentally wound me for the rest of my life. Believe me, if you think this wound is bad,” She gingerly touched the hole in her chest, “then you should see what's going through my mind right now and feel what I feel. You may think that, that dead bitch behind you is better than me, but you're wrong. I realize now that I am better than the both of you.”
“What are you talking about-?” Inuyasha exclaimed loudly.
“Let me finish.” Kagome said. “You Inuyasha, attack innocent people who have done nothing to you, you can't seem to let go of the past and realize that Kikyo and I are nothing alike. I'm not dead for one, and two I'm pure enough to guard the jewel. Kikyo you are immature and can't seem to except the fact that the jewel wants me to guard it and not you. Both of you need to forget the past, get over it and realize that I am not a copy or a tool to be used as you see fit.” Her legs no longer trembled as she stood, and she could feel her wounds already begin to heal. She grinned. “Oh and by the way I found out the truth Kikyo. You can't hide behind that little shard of my soul any longer.”
Inuyasha turned to Kikyo, confusion in his golden eyes. “Kikyo, what does she mean?”
“I don't know what that pathetic copy of mine is taking about, hurry up and kill her.” Kikyo said grabbing Inuyasha by his haori.
“Oh but you do. Inuyasha, hasn't she told you yet?” Kagome smiled. She had dragged it out as long as she could; now the truth would come out. “Kikyo, that was really rude of you not to tell him, especially since you claim to love him.”
“What are you talking about wench?” Inuyasha snapped, his voice filled with irritation.
“I'm talking about how Kikyo has been playing you for a fool. How she's been lying to everyone, including me. Then, when I was close to uncovering the truth, she killed me, or at least tried to. I guess me living wasn't part of your plan was it Kikyo? No of course it wasn't. So here's the truth, whether you want to believe it or not is your choice. I am not Kikyo's reincarnation. Nor am I connected to Kikyo in any way.” She looked around at them, as if she had just finished an important speech. “Everyone got it? Good.” She turned walking in the opposite direction, away from Inuyasha.
“Hey! You don't get to just walk away like that!” Inuyasha yelled, running up to her. “Give me the jewel!”
“Do you hear anything, at all, ever?” Kagome asked, instantly reaching up to touch the jewel which hung around her neck. “You're not getting the jewel. Come on guys, we're leaving.” She once again started walking away from him.
But Inuyasha, being the thick-headed half-demon he was, didn't seem to get her message. He charged her, swinging his claws around. Kagome heard the cries of outrage from her friends, saw the excited look on Kikyo's face, and most of all, saw the bloodthirsty look on Inuyasha's face. He would never go back to way he was before Kikyo came into the picture. And Kagome knew that she could never kill him, even though he was attacking her. But she wasn't going to put all that hard training she received to waste.
“Fine, you want to attack me, I'll fight back!” Kagome said, her sapphire blue eyes glowing pink with spiritual energy. She grinned as she felt the raw energy flow through her, yeah this was good! She watched Kikyo's expression change as she felt the huge amount of power that was contained within her body.
Inuyasha hit the barrier around her and was thrown back so harshly that he was knocked unconscious. “Give me the jewel!” A voice said from behind Kagome.
“Oh, I almost forgot about you, Kikyo.” Kagome said with a smirk. “I believe you have something that belongs to me, don't you? My soul?” Kikyo's eyes widened with fear. “I'll be taking that back now.” Kagome gathered pink energy in her hand. It was time to end this. No more playing around. No more being seen as just a copy. She thrust her hands forward, her palms facing outward. The energy released and flew towards Kikyo. It struck its target head on in the chest. Kikyo flew backwards, skidding across the ground until gravity made her come to a painful stop. Kagome grinned, loving the fact that she now held all the power over Kikyo. “Inuyasha had made a grave mistake in choosing someone so weak. You are not even worth my efforts. Now, time to die.”
Kagome once more gathered energy, this time it was a swirling black. “Black Torment!” The energy released and hit Kikyo, this time the dead woman writhed in pain. This particular attack was taught to her by the dragon demon Ryuu. It was designed to make the victim feel all the pain that they had caused to others. Kikyo was getting what she deserved.
Kikyo disintegrated right before their eyes, her body, which was made of ashes and dirt, could not stand up to the immense attack thrown at it. Her screams however, seemed to echo around them way after she was gone.
A glowing white orb floated slowly towards Kagome, it drifted a foot away, almost hesitating, then slammed into her chest. Kagome gasped. For the first time in years she felt whole, complete. She knew what she had to do. She turned to her friends. “I don't have much time guys, he'll be awake soon.” She jerked her thumb over her shoulder at the unconscious half-demon. “I need to go home for a while. When I come back we will finish completing the jewel, but until then I want you guys to relax and take a break from it all. If he tries to attack you, which I don't doubt he will, I give you each the power to activate his rosary, whenever you see fit.” Kagome waved her hand and a pink energy floated over Sango, Miroku, and Shippo. “Remember you have to use the S-I-T word.” She turned, her eyes searching the ground. “Kuro! Where are you?”
“Uh, Kagome? Who are you talking to?” Shippo asked, thinking for a moment that she had lost her mind.
“My neko demon, Kuro. Midoriko gave him to me when she trained me.” Seeing the confused look on her poor friends faces, she bit back a laugh. “She trained me after Kikyo hit me with her arrow. She trained me in a place where time moves faster so I got years of training, while only a few minutes passed on this plane. Got it?”
“I think so…” Miroku said, thoughtfully. “So Lady Midoriko trained you to use your miko abilities, that is good.”
“Yup.” Kagome chirped. “But now I have to go home for a while to think things over. I know we have to complete the jewel and defeat Naraku, but after everything that happened…” She looked over at the unconscious hanyou. “I really just want to go home and relax for a while.”
“We understand, Kagome.” Sango said. A meow at her feet made her look down. There stood a black colored cat demon. “Oh, I guess this is Kuro.” She leaned down and reached out to pet the soft black fur. “He's sweet.”
“Come on Lady Kagome, the least we can do is travel with you to Kaede's village.” Miroku said, with a little two friendly smile on his face. He slid over to her and put an arm around her.
“Miroku that's nice of you but--” She gasped and jerked away from him. His cursed hand rubbed her bottom gently. “Miroku…” Kagome said sweetly.
Miroku knew that voice, that voice meant, it was evil, very evil. He backed up, a nervous look on his face. “Well I'll just be going—” He took off running as fast as his mortal legs would take him.
`1…2…3…' Kagome counted silently. At three she took off after the perverted monk.
Sango, Shippo, Kirara and Kuro sweat dropped, and Kuro meowed to Kirara as if to say: “They do this often?” Kirara meowed back: “Too often.”

They had all accompanied Kagome to the well. The all stood gathered around it as if it would jump out and attack them. “So this is it.” Miroku said, peering in the well.
“Yes.” Kagome said. “But it won't be forever, we still need to complete the jewel and kill Naraku…” She hugged them all in turn, all the while trying not to get all emotional.
“Bye.” And with one last wave, and Kuro in her arms she jumped in the well. The familiar blue light surrounded her and then she was home. Home. She smiled and jumped out of the well easily, balancing on the rim with cat-like grace. She turned back to the well that held so many of her memories. Then with emotionless eyes she said an incantation. A light erupted from the well, it was sealed. No damage could be done to it from either time, nor could anyone pass through it. She turned away from it.
“Mom? Souta? Gramps? I'm home!” Running to the door she slid it open, and stared.
There was a blue-haired girl outside, with a pink kimono on. Floating, on an oar. She turned at the sound of the well house door opening. “Hello, I'm Botan, and I've been sent to get you.”
Kagome stared. “Uhhhhh…”

AN: Cliffy! *Dodges random objects thrown at her by the disappointed readers.* Don't worry chapter 4 will be up soon! And just to cheer you all up here's a preview:
Chapter 4: Bodyguards
He had the most powerful priestess the world had ever seen in his room. It was risky; she could destroy everything, if she wanted to. But luckily Kagome didn't seem to be that sort of person.
A portal appeared and out came his spirit detectives. “What do you want toddler? Unlike you we do have lives!”
Koenma sighed. Some things never changed. “What I want is to inform you of your new assignment.” The prince turned his chair around and grabbed a remote. “You will be bodyguards to this young girl, Kagome Higuraishi,” he pushed a button and a picture appeared, “and her family.”
