Chapter Two: That Shade of Red

"Don't even think about it." He told her harshly, "You need to stay here with us and collect jewel shards, you're no use to us back there."

Trying to sneak past Inuyasha proved to be a harder task than she thought it to be. She had been working on going back for a couple days now, all her efforts seemed to be rather fruitless. Trying extra-hard today

"I have to go back today!" She whined. "Inuyasha, it's winter, its not like we're going to find any jewel shards anytime soon."

"You don't know that." He scoffed, "If you go back there and there's a shard somewhere around here you won't be able to sense it and we won't be able to find it. So then Naraku will have it. You're not leaving."

She sighed. `Leave it to Inuyasha to make me feel like if I leave it'll be my fault Naraku is growing stronger. Give it a rest already…if I don't go back now I won't be able to meet Yusuke…'

"I need supplies and more bandages," Her hopeful face met his scowling one and she decided to use her trump card. "I'm out of ramen."

He thought about that for a minute, and she gave herself a mental pat on the back. Inuyasha's main weakness, ramen.

Well she wasn't lying…not really. She was fresh out of ramen, what did it matter if there were other reasons? Inuyasha didn't need to know that she the real reason she was going back was because of Yusuke, if he did she knew what it would cause. Problems, that's what.

"Two days" he stated

She widened her eyes, then got a hopeful look on her face. "Four?"

Inuyasha just glared at her. "Two."

"I need more than two days to get everything I need to do done!"

"And WE need you here to collect jewel shards! You're worthless to us there." He said, then added quietly, "Worthless to us here too."

"Inuyasha." Kagome smiled sweetly, "Sit boy!"

Inuyasha plummeted to the ground and Kagome jumped to get her pack. "I'm taking four days."

"The hell you are wench!" He grounded out.

"Sit."

Crash

"Four and that's it! Anymore and I'll drag you back here wench."

She gave him a wide smile "I knew you'd see it my way!"

As he started to get up, Kagome sat him again for good measure, walked to the well, and jumped in.

The only thing he was thinking about was how cold it was. `Great idea Yusuke, inviting a girl to meet you at a park in the middle of winter…shoulda just got her number.' He had been waiting for twenty minutes and about ready to turn around and go back home when he saw her come into view.

When she saw him she waved and made her way over. "Sorry I'm late, my…employer wouldn't let me out of his sight, took me forever just to convince him to let me go." She smiled sheepishly.

He just gave her a lopsided grin, "Don't I know how that feels."

"How long have you been here?" she asked him.

"Long enough, lets get outta here and someplace warm, its freezing." He winked. "Your place or mine?"

A boy that seemed no older than twelve, with brown hair and dark brown eyes walked up behind Kagome and grinned. "Ours!" He gave Kagome a smile, which was returned with a glare.

"I thought I told you to stay at home." Kagome warned.

"Yeah, but I don't get to bug you enough, so you understand Sis. I couldn't just pass up the chance!" The boy said smiling wider.

Yusuke stood there looking from Kagome to the boy, and then from the boy to Kagome. Watching their small argument unfold before his eyes he couldn't help but let out a laugh. His laugh brought the siblings out of their squabble to look at him.

"Yusuke. This is my younger brother Souta. Souta, this is Yusuke." Kagome groaned, preparing herself for what she knew was going to happen.

"Yusuke?! Urameshi Yusuke? THE Urameshi Yusuke? Did you know that you're a legend? I'd be afraid of you, but I don't think you'll hurt me because of Kagome. Are you and Kagome on a date?" he looked at Kagome, and then back at Yusuke.

Yusuke looked surprised, "Legend? Date? Um… Kagome are we…?"

Souta quickly cut him off. "Are you and her a couple? Kagome, why didn't you tell me you were dating Urameshi Yusuke? You think me being your brother that you'd tell me something like that! I could have bragged about that at school for days!" The young teen rambled on.

"Souta…" Kagome growled.

"So how long have you guys been dating? You better be honorable to my sister Urameshi! How old are you anyways? Can you show me some of your moves? Did you know that Kagome is seventeen, well if you didn't, she should have told you. By the way, I'm Higurashi Souta." Souta told him talking as fast as he could.

Yusuke raised an eyebrow. "No, I won't hurt you, and yeah probably because Kagome. Yes, on a date." He looked at Kagome. "No, not a couple. Just met. What do you mean honorable? We just met! I'm eighteen, and I don't have any moves that I could show you. Kagome already told me your name." Yusuke rolled his eyes.

Kagome gave him an apologetic look, he just shook his head.

Glaring at Souta Kagome told him, "We'll go home if you're quiet."

"Oh…okay." Souta said.

Yusuke looked at Kagome quizzically, "Does he always talk that much?"

"If you think that's bad, you should see him around Inuyasha," She sighed.

"Inuyasha?" Yusuke raised an eyebrow.

Kagome slapped the back of Souta's head as a warning to keep quiet. "My employer."

Souta glared at her, rubbing the bump on his head. "Yeah sis, like that explains everything." He stuck his tongue out at her, "Come on, its cold out here lets go to our house." He took off in front of Kagome and Yusuke to lead the way back to their Shrine.

"Welcome home Kagome, I didn't expect you back so… oh, who's this?" Mrs. Higurashi asked when Souta, Kagome, and Yusuke arrived at the house.

Kagome gave her a bright smile and introduced her friend. "Mama, this is Urameshi Yusuke. Yusuke, this is my mother."

Mrs. Higurashi looked thoughtful for a moment, then gave the teen a small smile. "Urameshi? As in Urameshi Atsuko?"

Yusuke nodded. "Yeah, that's my mom."

"Such a small world. Your mother and I were good friends in high-school. I even helped her through a bit of her pregnancy with you." Mrs. Higurashi looked from Yusuke to Kagome. "It's a bit ironic that you would find yourself with my daughter, however."

Yusuke scratched the back of his head and looked at his feet. "Well it just kinda happened, y'know?"

She nodded, "Yes, the just happening thing seems to follow my daughter wherever she goes."

Mrs. Higurashi turned towards the kitchen with a mischievous smile on her face. Perhaps this day wasn't going to be so dull after all, she just needed to give it an extra boost. "Now, now Kagome. It's a bit cold out there isn't it? I'll make you two something warm."

Souta piped up. "Hey! What about me?"

Mrs. Higurashi gave the boy a quick pat on his head and a wink. "You will be leaving Kagome and her friend alone, you wouldn't want to scare him off and ruin my plan, do you?" She whispered in his ear, then stated loud enough for Yusuke and Kagome to hear. "Go on and play outside with your friends, I'm sure that Ryou wouldn't mind having a snowball fight?"

Souta nodded and gave his mother a `I hope you know what you're doing' grin and set off outside.

Mrs. Higurashi ushered the two teens into the living room and set them down with a couple mugs of hot chocolate. "Why don't you two talk, I'm sure you don't want us bothering you." And with that she walked off to another part of the shrine.

Yusuke leaned back into the couch with his hands behind his head. Kagome just sat on a chair across from him, looking at him apprehensively. She looked down at her chocolate.

"This is awkward." She began. Fidgeting with her fingers.

"Yeah a bit." He agreed. "So do you normally go around inviting strange men that you've just met over to your house?"

She tsked at him and shook her finger. "Uh-uh. Remember, I didn't invite you anywhere, it was Souta. But yeah I have a bad habit for befriending people so quickly."

"Why would you say that's a bad habit? My friends tell me that I'm not friendly enough, and that I have bad manners, but that's alright I guess." Yusuke shook his head and looked at Kagome. "You're a lot prettier when you're not crying."

Kagome blushed, and Yusuke gave himself a mental pat on the back. Usually a small compliment wouldn't get a blush out of a girl, but he was sure the redness on her face wasn't from the cold. `Maybe she's not used to getting compliments…' he grinned, `lets see how pretty a red she can get.'

"It's true you know. I mean, you look beautiful with tears, but you're damn irresistible without them." Yusuke's grin got wider as her blush took a shade darker.

"Thank you, I suppose…"

"And your eyes, I've never seen a blue that color. They really bring attention to them." He smiled. He knew this game all too well. Sure he didn't know her all that well, but when it came down to flirting, Yusuke was a genius.

"It's almost like you aren't used to being told how gorgeous you are," a deeper shade of red from Kagome, "The way you blush and all, and don't try to say it isn't, cause I know that shade of red isn't from the cold."

She gave him a smile, he was right. She normally was only told how useless she was, and she was constantly letting herself believe herself to be ugly, even with Kouga and Hojou, around convincing her otherwise. Nobody had really even told Kagome that she was pretty other than a passing comment, but when Yusuke said it, she believed it.

And so it went, they sat there talking. Normally Mrs. Higurashi would stop in and see how they were doing and if they needed anything. After awhile, it had gotten late and Yusuke was sent off home with promises of seeing each other the next day. Mrs. Higurashi watched as her daughter hugged the boy, and waited until he was out the door to start asking questions.

"Well, he seems like a nice boy. How long have you known him?" She started.

Kagome fidgeted and looked to the floor. "A few days…"

Mrs. Higurashi just laughed a bit, "Very typical of you, Kagome. What of Inuyasha and your quest?" She asked, thinking back to the white-haired hanyou.

Kagome looked to the floor. "I don't know Mama. I really don't know…"
