To Find A Heart

Chapter 1

She didn't bother to wipe the blood from her face or attempt to untangle the long mass of black silk that was her hair. Not a thought was spared for her blood soaked black sleeveless haori or knee length skirt. She merely looked over the scene, assuring herself that the mission was complete and all the youkai were dead. This was their great revolt? How pathetic, they never would have defeated Naraku, especially now that he'd made the wish on the jewel and became a full demon. She allowed herself no sadness or self pity as she thought of what Japan had become. Ningen and youkai alike were enslaved, doing as Master Naraku bid. Little was left untouched by his malice. The sky was always tainted red with blood and dust. Fields withered and died, the soil having been contaminated with miasma. The forests held little hope as they were home to Naraku's grotesque minions.

Every now and then, a group would surface that thought they had the power to defeat Naraku, that was when she stepped in and eliminated the threat to his rule. These youkai were out of their mind if they honestly had any hope that they were strong enough. The great of youkai had fallen to him first. Kouga of the wolf tribe, Sesshomaru Lord of the Western lands, and his half brother Inuyasha. She pushed the unpleasant memories away, careful to keep her emotions at bay.

Her blue eyes were empty, almost to the point of looking glazed. She looked to the skies, making sure to keep her mind completely blank, except for a simple, `Completed.'

A purple orb flew in and hovered a moment before dissipating to reveal a man clad in white silk. He was a few inches over six feet tall, with long white hair that was tied at the base of his skull. He had an arrogant face with doll like violet eyes. His body had matured from the childlike state it had been in when she had fought against him, so long ago, almost 120 years ago. He smirked, the same smirk as back then. It let her know that she'd been thinking too loud, loud enough for him to pick up. She quickly shut down her mind.

The smirk never left his face as he spoke, his voice eerily like Naraku's but a touch less maniacal. Which actually bothered her more. “Well done Kagome, Naraku will be pleased.”

Kagome stared at him coldly, moving to stand beside him. “Why don't you just say what you're really thinking, Hakudoshi.”

“So now you read minds too?”

Kagome shook her head. “Just experience.”

Hakudoshi put an arm around her, his hand resting on her upper arm. The barrier reappeared around them as they took to the sky. “I was able to read your mind. I normally cant. It's always annoyed me that I could never figure out what you're thinking. It's just empty. I could tell if you were shielding your thoughts, but it like there's just nothing there. At first I thought that it was just because of Naraku bringing you back from the dead, but Kikyo had been the same as you are now, and Id been able to read her thoughts.”

Kagome sighed, the first in the last few years, but lately Hakudoshi had gotten such responses from her. Maybe this life was starting to wear on her. She had been in the peaceful slumber of death for a hundred years when Naraku forced her awake and into the clay body she now wore. This body was 20 years old, so did that make her 20? Or would you count her previous life and death as well? It would be pointless to even consider any similarity between the Kagome now and then. The Kagome that was lover to Inuyasha, mother to Shippo, sister to Sango and Miroku, and friend to all that knew her, was 120 years dead. The resurrected Kagome had none to trust, no friends to speak of, and no true lover, though when she'd been punished in her early years of Naraku's tender care, he'd found great delight in teaching her how to please him and sometimes others. She'd been credited as a master of pleasure. The only companion she kept was Hakudoshi, who was more or less her keeper, making sure she does what she's told. After 20 years, he was the closest thing to a confidant that she had. She had learned over time that he didn't tell Naraku everything, in fact he only told Naraku what was asked and even then the truth was more a lie by omission. Hakudoshi had always been a master with words. He could make even Naraku think black was white, if he wished to do so. He was one of Naraku's most favored, and as such, was rewarded the most freedom of any of his subjects.

Kagome shifted her weight, leaning more into Hakudoshi, who in response tensed, unsure of her motives. When she made no further movement, he let out a breath, and relaxed. Kagome almost smiled, her first smile since she'd been resurrected, but it came out as more of a quirking of the lips from years of disuse. It was nice to be held. Maybe Hakudoshi could be trusted. “Hakudoshi… Do you want to hear a story?”

She had said it softly, but with more emotion in her voice than he'd heard in the past few years. He nodded, knowing that she would feel his movement. Her mouth did its odd quirk again, it still felt foreign to her, but it seemed as if she were getting better at it.

She began from the beginning, the very beginning, her first birth in her own era. She told him about her modern conveniences, the friends she'd grown up with, her school, her family, the death of her father, and how she'd come to be entangled in the misfortune that is the Shikon no Tama. It was a long journey, she had time. No need to rush.

End of Chapter

Um… been really busy. And I'm working on like 3 or 4 fics at the moment, not to mention my own original story. Can't wait to get that thing on the ball. If you're reading Matter of the Soul I should have some more chapters soon, but as I've been doing revisions… well, I decided I'd do at least 2 new chapters, before I post each new one.

Reviews & constructive criticism appreciate. Btw… this is a PWP(plot, what plot?) meaning it's all off the top of my head. Not much planning, just a general base plot to go by.
