To Find A Heart
Chapter 5
Everything felt warm and happy. It was a feeling Kagome didn't realize even existed anymore, not with Naraku running Japan. She began to feel immense guilt suffocating her and she swore she felt like her heart was being clenched in a tight fist. As she sobbed, tearless cries escaped. That warm feeling became a body, though not quite solid, but it held her, cradling her body to it. A soft voice flittered into her head. It was feminine and delicate, like the tinkling of bells.
“Why would you cry my little Kagome? You have done a great deed for mankind.”
This made Kagome flinch. “How can that be? I've ruined everything. I brought back the jewel, I shattered the jewel, and I let Naraku control me, and destroy Japan. I'm despicable.”
“Nonsense.” The voice scolded gently. “It was your bringing the jewel here that will allow me to make the world as it should be, as you remember it.”
Her lip quivered. She let her eyes travel to the being holding her, and realized with a start that she was a goddess. It was like looking at sunlight, without being blinded by it. “I don't understand.”
The goddess smiled. “It was destiny for this to happen, and while I am sorry for the suffering you have and will endure because of it, it was necessary. With the power of the jewel, I can separate the world. Otherwise the youkai will forever dominate the human race.”
This made sense to Kagome. Demons would always reek havoc upon the humans, and this would explain why she had never sensed any youkai in her era. “So you're going to create two parallel planes, or something like that?”
The goddess chuckled, very fond of this girl. “Actually three, but yes, that's the basic idea.”
Kagome quirked an eyebrow. “Why three? Are you going to separate youkai and hanyou?”
Again Kagome was rewarded with the goddess's musical laughter. “No dear, I hold no grudge against those who are not purebred. The spirits, I fear, would end up even more lost than usual with more than one realm, so I will make the third solely for spirits.”
She saved the knowledge, and asked, “So… I suppose this is something I'll need to keep in mind?”
The goddess just continued to smile, refusing to give away any of her plans. “Kagome… I'm sorry for this, but you have to go back. I would love to let you stay, but your destiny is not complete. I will forewarn you, this life will not start off any easier than the last was, but a time will come when I ask you to come to me with the jewel, and you must do this if I am to separate the realms. Then you need to be ready for many changes. You will be allowed to live in the human realm. You're ashes will be stored in a protected place in the spirit realm, in order to protect you from being brought back to life again in the future. I am sorry for the trials you will have to face in living again, but you'll find a gift in the form of retaining your holy powers. I must go, for now, but remember that I am never far.”
The clenching that had all but stopped began again. It increased until Kagome couldn't breathe around the pain. Her whole body felt like it were being consumed in flames. She could feel her body convulsing in seizures. Every thing faded in, little by little. She could feel many auras at the edge of her mind a step behind the burning pain. The she felt the goddess's cool touch on her chest. The fingers slipped past her skin without pain or hindrance. Suddenly, Kagome jerked up, the pain completely gone.
Kagome stretched her limbs, noticing how real the skin felt. “It wasn't like this before… hmm… a much better job this time.”
Kagome turned to look at the room full of youkai. They were all extremely powerful, but two stood out the most to her. The first was a relatively short youkai, with black hair and deep red eyes. She looked into those eyes and wondered if Naraku had handed the reigns to his son. Had he ever had a son? Maybe he was sterile… Snapping back to attention, Kagome searched out the familiar aura. His lavender eyes locked with her own. She thought to him, `I missed you, what's going on?'
The shorter youkai growled low in his throat. “Was this some elaborate plot to be reunited with a lost lover?”
Kagome sized his up more carefully the second time. His aura was of conflicting elements, fire and ice, but he was definitely a full-blooded youkai. So it was a no to the possibility of him being Naraku's offspring. He had two other demonic auras that entertwined with his own so closely that even she could tell they weren't actually apart of him. One came from beneath the headband and the other from under the cloth rapped around his arm. She quirked an eyebrow at him. They were dark energies, but not evil, not by a long shot. She looked around at the youkai who were cowering before his supposed wrath, and wondered if any of them knew he wasn't as evil as he made himself out to be.
The room grew hot and humid and his deep voice burned a path up her skin, but not from fear. “Do not assume that you know me so well. And I will ask you only once more Hakudoshi, is this simply a lost lover or the Shikon guardian who I had requested?”
Kagome was stuck on the fact that he had obviously read her mind. `Well… this sucks…'
The youkai's eyes widened and flicked to her pouty expression. “If that was an offer, it was unneeded.”
Her eyes flicked to his in surprise. She tended to forget that many of her expressions weren't used in this era. She just shrugged.
“She is the Shikon Jewel's guardian.” Hakudoshi said smoothly.
“Everyone out.” It was a leader's order, or so she assumed.
After they had filed out, she looked around the room. It was lavish. The stone floors were covered in thick furs, predominantly black. Black silk hung from the ceiling, covering the stone walls. There were chairs and cushions, all covered in, you guessed it, black silk. There was a surprisingly modern bed that was not only huge but covered in black silk. Despite the gothic appearance, it seemed like a comforting place. No blood and gore as decorations, no dead bodies, no one else. It felt nice to be alone.
He watched her examine her surroundings, hearing the monologue. “This is where you'll be staying. You are here to keep the jewel in check.” Indeed he had noticed how much quieter the jewel was now that she was around. Even his normally wild and erratic aura was mostly calm. She was a strange girl. He wondered when she would notice her lack of clothing, not that he cared one way or another.
She nodded. “So you're the ruler now?” He nodded. “Well that's good.” She smiled at him, knowing he wouldn't return it. “I apologize for the jewel, it tends to go a little crazy sometimes. What is expected of me?”
The apology and question surprised him, though it didn't show. He shook it off mentally. “As I said earlier, you will be staying in here. These are my quarters. You'll find a bathing room just off of there behind that silk. You will have limited contact with anyone but myself, as you will have my jewel much of the time. Food will be brought here by one of the servants, and clothing will be supplied. If you have need of anything ask one of the servants and they will get it for you. Do not go wandering the castle, as it could be dangerous. If there is anything I feel you need to know, I will tell you, do not waste my time with idiotic questions.”
Kagome got to her knees and bowed with her forehead resting on her hands. “Yes, master.” It was monotonous and relatively dead of any feeling. It was a complete turn about from how she had acted earlier, and it confused him, because he felt no sarcasm, or anything for that matter, from her. It was like she was there in full personality one second and the next replaced with a lifeless doll.
Kagome fell easily into the roll as servant once again, though a bit weary. The last male who had said that he would provide everything for her had turned out to be insane. She pushed the thoughts away, using her earlier years of training to completely shield her mind.
“I am Lord Hiei.”
She knew she wasn't expected to respond and so she didn't.
Definitely a strange woman, Hiei decided.
