To Find A Heart

Chapter 7

Kagome sat on a black fur, picking at the strands, bored out of her mind. Hiei was in the bath, she could smell his scented oils, sage and citrus. She'd been in his service for quite a while now, and he had not spoken to her since the first day. Despite his unsociable behavior, he took very good care of her. She was fed three meals a day, an exquisite variety of delectables, given fine clothing, aloud to bathe in his private chambers with her own bath oils, and she was treated well by most in the castle. It was a good life and from what she had seen so far, he was a good ruler.

She sighed loudly and flopped onto her back. She didn't like the fact that she was going to have to betray him. So it was her destiny to save the world that she knew… but was this world so bad? It had been so long since she'd been the naïve fifteen-year-old that fell down the well. How old would her brother be now? How different was the time stream? When she went back, how much time would have passed since the last time she returned? Would they think that she was dead? Would her grandfather still be alive? All those thoughts made her mood sway toward depression. It made her wonder if going back would be worth it. What would the goddess do if she refused? Kagome shook all the thoughts from her mind when Hiei emerged from the bathroom.

He really was a sight to behold, but with as many nude male youkai she'd seen, she wasn't awestruck. But he wasn't entirely nude, he still had on the headband and the bandages around his arm. He never took them off. `Does he shower in them?' Kagome wondered.

“No I do not.” Hiei didn't know why he had given such a thoughtless question a reply, but he had nothing pressing to do until much later that night, and could do with some entertainment.

Kagome was surprised that he'd answered, but didn't want to miss out on a chance to possibly get to know him better. “Then why do you put them on before coming out of the bath? If I might ask.”

“You should hide your secret weapons as best you can.”

“If you're trying to hide them from me, you should save the effort. I already know that you have two power sources separate to your own. They're so close to yours that most people probably cant tell that they're separate though.” She was looking up at him from the floor, her arms folded under her head.

Hiei analyzed what she said and thought on it. One of the reasons he could tolerate her, was that she was always honest about things, and never mocking or critical. Many females would scoff at your weaknesses, and rub it in your face that you're inadequate, but she was different. He had observed her behavior closely. She didn't gossip, talk bad about anyone, and was always patient and understanding. When a newer servant girl had made Kagome's tea, she had burned it horribly. Kagome had just smiled and helped the girl make a new kettle. She was strange, but pleasant. Beyond that, she kept her own secrets buried deep enough that, neither he nor Hakudoshi could discover them. Every now and then, when she was deep in thought, he could read her emotions. Regret, sadness, and pain were the most prominent emotions to flitter through her eyes. From what he knew, she and Hakudoshi had once been lovers, but she very rarely sought him out and of the time that she'd been here, she had never smelled of sex. It made him wonder what happened.

After a long silence, Kagome sat upright and apologized for her forwardness.

The dazed look left his eyes and he waved off her apology saying it wasn't needed. He sat on the edge of the huge bed and continued to wonder about the strange girl. There was no information about her anywhere. Not even Naraku's records included her. It was like she had just popped out of nowhere. Her attitude and education was an unusual attribute for the time she had lived in before. To his knowledge Naraku had neglected to provide any means of education.

Kagome watched him. He was thinking hard about something, she could tell. He was lovely and handsome. His nude body still covered in water droplets. His hair, which normally spiked, was damp and clung to his face, and his eyes were the loveliest shade of red. Kagome forcibly removed the thoughts from her head, but not before they had caught Hiei's attention. Kagome was so in her own world that she didn't notice when Hiei tuned into her inner struggle.

Kagome didn't want to think about romance or relationships. They always turned bad. The pain from loosing Inuyasha would always be a sore spot for her heart. Then there was him. She had those neon green eyes burned into her memory, she hated those eyes. It occurred to her, that she had never really known the name of her previous keeper, and she was almost glad that there was no name to go with the face. He had almost seemed to love her, in his own twisted way. He always asked the same question. “Are you comfortable?” It always sounded sincere. Then he turned violent. He had treated her like a doll. Hiei was doing much the same thing, yet it felt different, so very different. She remembered the deep voice and dark skin that accompanied the green hair and eyes. Like a haunting nightmare. It made her wonder if all men were like that, deep down. They wanted to possess you entirely, make all your moves for you, and take away your freedom. She curled up on the fur and refused to think anymore. It was silent and she fell into sleep almost immediately.

Hiei was stunned at the brutality that the youkai had treated her with. He was a truly twisted individual. He knew that living with the youkai for as long as she had, had broken something in her. Made her not want to trust any males. Perhaps that was why she had drifted away from Hakudoshi. Hiei dressed quickly and left the room in search of Hakudoshi, to ask him for any information about the miko he night have.

A dreamless sleep seemed to elude Kagome, as she slipped from nightmare to nightmare.

The once melodic voice of the goddess was now harsh and brutal, each word attacked her very soul like needles stabbed straight to her core.

First it was the scene of Inuyasha, Shippo, Sango, and Miroku being killed, but it seemed more graphic somehow. More intense with Kagome having a front row seat. “All to waste…” said the Goddess.

Then a cruel repeat of her time spent under the watchful eye of her keeper. She felt each pain as it ripped the scabs open from her healing psychological wounds. Each agony exaggerated a thousand times. “Aren't you just a lovely rose?” whispered the Goddess, stabbing deeper still.

She saw flashes of what was to come. Her family. Her mother raped, tortured. Her grandfather didn't even live to see hers or her brothers birth. Though her brother didn't live to see his first birthday, he was eaten by a hideous youkai. Each wrong done to her loved ones cut deeper than all the other horrid images. Every flash of blood, gore, and pain tore sobs from her throat. “ALL BECAUSE OF YOU.” It boomed through her head so loudly that Kagome was left with ringing ears.

“You WILL bring me the jewel. Or what you saw will come to be. Your friend's sacrifices and the suffering you've endured will have gone to waste. Do not try to escape your destiny.”

That was the last of the Goddess' advice before Kagome was flung into the waking world, throat sore, eyes wet, and head pounding.

Hiei had been talking with Hakudoshi for almost an hour, when he felt someone's power scream, shooting through the entire castle. It did no harm, but sent chills up even the most stoic of youkai's spines. It left you with an unbearable ache. It was loneliness. It was guilt. It was pain, in every sense of the word.

Hakudoshi was the first to realize. “Kagome… it's Kagome!”

Hiei was amazed at the force and shear amount of the power, but his first thoughts revolved around how any single being could hold so much pain inside and still carry on living.

Hakudoshi was crouched down on the stone floor, hand fisted to his chest. Hiei sped to his room. Upon entering, Kagome's head jerked upward and her eyes looked at him, glazed and unseeing. She lunged at him, seeking to relieve the pain in her heart. She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face into his still unclothed chest. Cautiously Hiei returned the embrace. They stood that way. Dark clouds had rolled in, a late afternoon storm was approaching quickly. The first roll of thunder sounded. Kagome began to shake.

Hiei picked her up and carried her to the bed. Laying down, he wrapped his body around hers, spooning. He pulled a blanket up, covering the both of them. She began to settle and he finally decided to take a peek into her nightmare. He flashed through the death of her friends and her torture at the hands of the man with dark skin and green hair and eyes. When he got to her family, something was obviously filtering, as he could only see select clips. The Goddess had anticipated his prying eye and set up blocks. She did not want him discovering her plan.

When Hiei had gotten as much as he could, he looked at the miko with a new light. She seemed so frail and delicate at that moment. Like a stray breeze could shatter her. He breathed in her scent and could smell his own on her. That woke something in him. A long buried desire. A completely male possessiveness. He sent a mental note to Hakudoshi for him to handle the meeting he himself was supposed to attend later and that he didn't want any disturbances the rest of the day. It was received with a curious affirmative.

That night was the first, but not the last, night Kagome slept in the bed cuddled next to Hiei. In fact for the rest of the week they could both be found, body to body under the blankets of the massive bed.
