Chapter two:
The shower sprayed thick droplets onto her sensitive skin calming and relaxing her. Her clothes clung to her skin, wrinkling with the weight of the moisture. Her body shook with slight, vibrating tremors that mirrored her labored breathing. The water was cold and helped chill the heat that had risen in her body. Why was she standing in a cold shower with her clothes on at...(looking towards the blinking clock) 3:00 in the morning? Because of those hated and wonderful golden eyes that seemed to haunt her dreams ever since she had returned from the past. Had she known it would be like this she might not have ever done it. Yet, as she looked back, she couldn't say she regretted it. If given the choice she'd do it again…and hopefully make it last even longer.
But now she was living with the repercussions. Sitting down and leaning over the side of the tub she tried to think of something other than her mystery youkai of whom, she knew she would never see again.
She had returned only three days ago. Her mother, brother, and grandpa were jubilant about her victory over Naraku. They had attempted to ask her about Inuyasha, but she just lied and said he had been sad to see her go and told her to them hello and goodbye for him. They nodded and accepted her answer even though her mother had looked at her out of the corner of her eyes. Well, what was she suppose to say? Hey everyone, Inuyasha, the boy you guys love and trusted to care for me over the past four years, just tried to kill me to give his old girlfriend, or my so called incarnation, her soul back in hopes that the two of them could pick up where they left off since she had died in the feudal era fifty years before I even went back into the past. Oh yeah, she could DEFINITELY pull that off. Her mind wondered with immense sarcasm that caused her lips to twitch into a smirk.
That night her mom had fixed Oden and these American sweet cakes that were she loved. The sweet cakes had a strawberry flavored covered in white icing. Taught her mom how to make these `cupcakes' after she had learned how to make them from culinary class during school. They tasted delicious and her brother agreed as well. She had graduated from school a year and a half ago, pulling through with just over a B average. She thanked whatever God had been looking down on her. She decided not to go on to college and for the past six months lived, almost, completely in the past. Her mother, although apprehensive about allowing her to live in the past, understood that her daughter had a destiny and therefore permitted it.
She sighed and rose, turning the shower off and stepped out of the tub. She undressed and put the wet clothes over the side of the tub to dry, then grabbed a towel and began drying off. For a long moment she just stared at her reflection in the oval shaped mirror that hung over the sink. She felt both different and the same, and to ironic humor, she reflected that. She still felt like the happy girl that she was four years ago, but she knew she had grown up. The things she had seen matured her. She had carried a burden for so long that she began to sympathize with Kikyo; the Kikyo that had died so many years ago. However, she had help to carry that burden, unlike Kikyo. She had friends that gave her strength and she was grateful. She smiled at the reflection, glad that she was still able to smile, so unlike the pale woman she had been compared with for so long. Her eyes that were a deep blue, the blue her mother had, still held life compared to those of Kikyo's brown ones that reflected death and sadness.
Her body had grown up too. Four years ago she was a skinny, boney girl. Now, with the help of constant walking, she was tone and held a figure that most males liked. She wasn't too thick, but definitely not skinny. Her hair that had grown to below her waist had become such a deep black that blue could be seen tinged within it as well. Lady Kaede had said that it was a result of her Miko powers that had grown and come under her control. She was stronger than Kikyo now; she had worked hard to get that far. Yet now, there was no reason to use them. There were no demons here in the present, an enigma of a question that had puzzled her for so long.
As she stared at the mirror her eyes drifted to the silver rose tattoo on her neck that she discovered the day she had returned. It didn't come off in water…trust that she had tried. It seemed to glow when she touched and every time she did touch it, those golden eyes would appear in her head. This explained her night…um…problems. She often slept curled up with her hands touching her neck. It was a curious mark and she knew it came from her mysterious lover, yet she didn't know what it meant. Despite it being a gift of some sort, that's what she assumed it to be, she tried her best to hide it. Hey, you try explaining to your mother how a tattoo got on your neck in the feudal era and see where it takes you.
Shaking her head she stood back and walked out of the bathroom. She grabbed a new pair of clothes: jean shorts, a white tee shirt that said, “Love me or hate me, you're still thinking about me”, and a pair of white Nike tennis shoes; she had no intention of going back to sleep. Then, silently, she walked down the stairs. One floor board creaked, her heart leaped into her throat. Her grandpa had been known to attack in the middle of the night if he thought someone was in the house. That was the last thing she needed at the moment. Nothing happened, so she continued on down the stairs to the kitchen.
Her stomach growled as she approached the kitchen, letting her know that she was on the right track. The light flared as she opened the refrigerator and her eyes focused on the last `cupcake'. Grabbing it she headed outside. The night air was refreshing, of course, nothing as wonderful as the feudal era. The air there was clean and pure; something she wished she could have brought here. Nevertheless, it did smell wonderful. The air had yet to be polluted by the morning factories and cars as well as the heat of the summer sun. It was mid June, and she smiled as the warm breeze played across her neck, ruffling her hair. The moon, now full, shone through the green branches of the goshinbuku (hope I spelled that right). The giant tree stood in all its magnificence against a full moon backdrop. She walked up to it and put her forehead against it. Her hand rubbed the puncture wound that had been the arrow that had held Inuyasha there. She could almost remember his face there, his hair blowing in the breeze as old tree vines grew up his body. She shook her head and quickly stepped back.
It seemed her feet were following their own path tonight as they pulled her into the well house. It was dark; the moonlight couldn't escape into the cracks. But she didn't need any light, her foots new the way by heart. Every step was subconsciously memorized and soon she found her hands bracing the sides of the old wooden well that had changed her life. Tears that she had yet to realize fell from her eyes and splattered the wooden surface. Sighing, she turned around and sat on the edge. Propping her head up on her hand and her elbow onto her thigh, she preceded to cry. Silently she said goodbye to the ones she loved and held dear to heart. Goodbye…Shippo, another tear fell. Goodbye…Miroku, another droplet hit her hand. Goodbye…Sango, another fell. Goodbye…Inuyasha, the dam behind her eyes broke and she found herself sobbing uncontrollably.
She was completely so focused on the memories that were racking her that she didn't feel the throbbing of the well until it was too late. A tentacle reached out and wrapped around the arm that had been bracing the well, and another wrapped around her waist. A green light, different from the blue she had been so use to, emanated like a beacon of hope from within. For a moment she felt déjà vu, her mind overlapping that fifteenth birthday with what was happening now. A demon of some sort roared out of the well only to grab her and pull her back in. The green light enveloped her and she felt as though she was moving through water that couldn't decide if it wanted to be hot or cold. The feeling tickled her skin like winter fresh gum. However, she wasn't given much time to bask in it as the ugly demon (she had yet to figure out what it was) had been talking to her.
“So, precious, you're the one my master wants.”
“Who are you?” She could feel her powers reacting to purify him. She held them back; she needed to know more about what she had been pulled into before the thing was purified.
“It matters not who I am, only that I have retrieved you.”
“Who is your master? How does he know of me?” She struggled with the demons grasp but he only pulled her tighter.
“You will find out soon enough. Now be still.” His voice was menacing but it didn't faze her: I mean, come on, has this demon met Sessoumaru?
“Well, tell me why it is your master wants me.” She had an idea and it was connected to the jewel she held around her neck.
“Why isn't it obvious? You hold the power and the connection from the Nigenkai and the Makai. You can and will make a pathway for my master from your world to our world.” Her mind was running. What the hell was this guy talking about? What the hell was the Nigenkai and Makai? How was she supposed to connect them? Who the hell was this guy anyway? And how the hell did he know her? Her mind scrambled for answers that weren't there and it only served to piss her off. She released her powers, deciding that the demon was of no more use. He screamed in agony, a last, “Master forgot to tell me you were a miko…” dying with him. He was dead before the green light had dissipated and Kagome found herself standing at the bottom of the well under a dark red sky that she imagined would turn blood red with the sunrise.
This was definitely not the feudal era or anywhere near Japan. She jumped out of the well, and saw many plants and wildlife that she had never seen before in any era. There was a tangible aura about the place that reeked demon. Walking around she saw birds with three eyes and butterflies that had long tails like dragons. A flower she had bent over to smell even snapped at her. We are definitely not in Kansas or Japan Todo, “she stated sarcastically to herself.
The woods were thick and vines seemed to either sizzle at her touch or try and grab her. This was not what she had expected from a late night walk. She didn't know where she was and she needed to leave as soon as possible. She debated about jumping back in the well, but if she did she would only be leading this demon after her and into her families' home. If something happen to her family because of her she didn't think she would be able to live with herself. She continued walking until a voice made her stop.
“My sweet miko how was your trip? I trust you and my messenger arrived back safely.”
She gritted her teeth at his sarcastic civility, and decided to play along. “Yes I arrived here safely, but your friend he had a little…accident on the way here. I hope that won't be a problem, but thank you for asking.” Laughter rumbled around the forestry, a small pink and purple flower shook from its effects.
“You're a bit feisty, I like that.” She could feel a hand slide down the side of her neck. She twisted around but it was gone.
“Calm down, I don't plan on hurting you …yet.” He seemed to think himself funny since he laughed. “I brought you here for a reason; do you know what it is?”
“Yes. I do.” Her teeth gritted at the sound of the voice, and the fact that she couldn't pinpoint his aura. He keeps shifting and blocking his energy with some sort of spell. I can't pinpoint him. As soon as she found the general area he would leap to a new place and she'd have to start all over again. It was becoming infuriating.
“Well, what do you say to my proposal, hhmm? If you connect this world with the ningenkai I will provide you with anything you desire, anything at all.” One wish, huh? What was he, some sort of a genie? She laughed inside at the foolishness of the one with the voice.
“No thank you, I have no deep down desires that I would make me willing to do whatever you want me to do. Besides, I think you have the wrong person. How do you expect me to connect two worlds? Why do you want the worlds connected? Even if you told me I would say no simply because of the understanding that the two worlds are two for a reason. If you're planning on taking over my world, why would I help you?”
“You'd help me because I would kill the one closest to you.” Her heart skipped a beat. Mother…Souta…grandpa, so many faces flashed across her mind. He would kill them, or at least one of them. Yet, she couldn't say yes.
“No. Besides, I have no one closest to my heart.” His laughter made her nervous as it vibrated the hairs on her neck.
“On the contrary, I think you do my little miko, you just don't realize it. I will let you think it over and come to a decision. I promise you don't want to be too hasty in turning down my offer.” With that she heard a pop and felt his complete energy vanish. He was gone and had left her with a burden heart. It seemed the fate of the world was always being put on her shoulders.
She began to panic as the faces of her family and the faces of the people she randomly met in her day to day activities flew through her head. A child…her souta…a mother…her mother…a father…her grandpa. If given a decision, which one would she make? Her heart began to race and she found herself running dazedly in a direction she didn't know. Thorns scraped her skin and some flowers hissed as she ran by. Finally she saw a flickering light up ahead and she ran to it. It was a camp and surrounded by the fire were group of ten or so demons, all of whom had focused on her the minute she entered the camp as if she was the evening meal. The more she thought about it, the more she realized she probably was the evening meal.
“Well I needed a good fight anyway.” With that she ran into battle the demons that had already started stalking her.

“What the hell do you want now toddler? Jeez, I thought you said we were on a break before the tournament starts. We still have two more days. Do you know what that means? NO FUCKING DISTURBANCES!”
“Yuske, calm yourself. I had no intention on calling you, but a situation has come up that could prove more of a problem than it already is.” Koenma spoke around his pacifier at Yuske from his desk that was piled with papers. The spirit detectives had been rushed out of their beds at about 3:45 this morning and told to get their behinds here as soon as possible. Kuwabara had been left at home since he was sick with some kind of bronchial virus that was going around. Shizuru had all but thrown Botan out of her house when she popped in uninvited and asked for Kuwabara.
Hiei stood, as usual, up against the wall. His arms were folded, looking like something strait out of a badass movie or `bad boy' romance novel. He was draped in his usual black, leather pants that sculpted his tone thighs and a loose shirt that left a hint of what was underneath, yet still left room for curiosity. His expression was that of irritation, and from the pulsing eyebrow it was obvious he was soon going to lose his temper.
“Look here you pathetic excuse for a demi god, spit out why you have brought us here at such an idiotic hour and I won't be force to serve you up rare to my dragon.” What can I say, Hiei didn't like being woken up…especially not by a bubbly blue haired grim reaper of whom was chipper at any hour.
“Don't be too rash Hiei, although I am too growing impatient with this side talk. Koenma, please, just spit out what you have to say.” A young, sexy man with hair as red and silky as the reddest rose spoke, his irritation easily heard in his voice. His emerald eyes shone and flickered from that vibrant color to a deep gold. His alter ego was pissed. Kitsunes did not like getting up early and were not known for their civil behavior or, in Yoko's case, language when put in that situation.
“Thank you, Kurama, I will. A few minutes ago a young woman was kidnapped into the Makai by a demon that we know nothing about. It seems however that he was sent because of how he got to the girl and because of who the girl is. The woman is the Shikon Miko, a very important person and if something happens to her…,”He shivered, “My father will do more than just kill me.”
“Ok, so why did you bring us all here? Only one of us needs to go.” Yuske looked even more irritated, but he was too tired to argue anymore.
“True Yuske, but because my sources have no idea what reasons the miko was kidnapped we needed all of your expertise on this right away.”
“Fine, we'll go. Just hurry up and tell us what she looks like so we can get a move on. I was in the middle of a really good sleep before Botan popped in with all her bubbly glory.” Sarcasm laced his words and made Botan shoot him a glare.
“At least I don't talk in my sleep.” She shot back. Yuske's eyes bulged.
“NO…” He cried.
“Oh YES.” She smirked.
“What did you hear? Tell me now damn it!”
“Yuske calm down, I know you like it rough and everything, but that doesn't mean I do.” She gave him a wicked look and watched as Yuske paled.
“Oh, shut up. Hurry up Koenma.” Yuske's face was red and turning a tinged purple. Kurama was laughing internally with Yoko who found the detective's humiliation hilarious. Hiei, who had linked telepathically with Kurama and Yoko, was laughing as well, although it didn't show on either demon's face.
“Botan, show them the last place the miko was sensed.” The grim reaper opened a portal into the makai, and waited until the group had stepped through. It was just the three there now, as Botan had stayed to take care of some other business. There was a well in the middle of the clearing, old and slightly dilapidated. Purple vines grew up the side and sprouted yellow flowers which, Kurama knew, could be poisonous.
He scanned the area sensing for any abnormalities or something that could stand out of place. Not that he had to search for long; a male cry was heard before a loud crash a little ways into the forest ahead. The group looked at each other before running towards the sounds. What they came upon took them all by surprise; even Hiei looked a little out shocked.
She was beautiful. Long black hair with dark blue hints glowed in the firelight. Her eyes, fierce from her fight, were a deep blue. Her shirt and jeans fit her body that was both toned and curvaceous. Her hands held a sword made of pure energy, sparks of pink electricity flickered around it. She moved gracefully through the demons, cutting them down one by one. She didn't seem to in need of any help.
*Hey Yoko, are you seeing this?
Of course, I can see it red…I know her…
*From where?
Yoko remained silent which only served to intrigue Kurama even more. That dang kitsune curiosity is rubbing off on me.
A low whistle could be heard from Yuske as the woman finished off the last demon and turned on them. She looked suspicious and about ready to attack. Yuske stepped forward and Kurama could tell by the woman's expression this wasn't going to end pretty…for Yuske anyway.
“So look my—“ He was cut off when the woman, releasing her energy sword, punched Yuske dead in the face. Yuske did a slight 180 and fell limply to the ground.
“Go tell your master I don't want anything to do with him or his plans.” Kurama raised an eyebrow and so did the kitsune within. Hiei, being Hiei, pulled his sword and prepared to put the woman in a hold to come her down.
“Onna, calm your—“ Hiei found himself flying through the air to land on his bag and the onna straddling him, his own sword at his neck.
“My name, demon, is Kagome. Now that you know it, use it.” Hiei stared at her with a glare that could literally freeze hell over and Kagome stared just heatedly back. This left Kurama to smooth things over. He decided it was best to do this while giving her as much space as she needed.
“Miss Kagome, I am sorry if you think that we have come to harm you or a part of the plans to kidnap you. To the contrary, we were sent here to save you. But…it doesn't really look like you needed saving.” He smiled a cool smile in hopes of calming her.
He looked down at her and saw her look down at the demon beneath her. She smiled which caught Hiei off, and to the amusement of Kurama, made him blush. Interesting.
*Hey Yoko, I think Hiei is starting to like this Kagome.
It doesn't matter. She belongs to me.
His voice was fierce and it caught Kurama off guard.
*What does that mean, Yoko? How is she yours? She's too young to know you.
Silence met his ears again and it was starting to irritate him. What was Yoko hiding and what did have to do with the woman? Kurama eyed the girl in question, coming out of his internal discussion, and realized she was staring at him with an intensity he had never seen before. It was as though she was looking straight into his soul…even weirder, it seemed as though she was looking at Yoko. He could fill the kitsine inside move around restlessly. What's going on here?
The three boys were interesting, all of them being attractive…in their own way. The one laid out unconscious, to her present dismay, was handsome in a boyish way. His hair, which had been jelled, hung in loose tendrils across his face. Ironically, he looked peaceful. She smiled as she felt the sun start to rise with the temperature change, the warm air blowing the boy's hair around his face.
The one who had been beneath her was hot too. Gravity defying black hair that stood on end like he had been electrified. A sunburst of white could be seen laced through the soft tendrils. His eyes, blood red, were fierce; he seemed to be angry at something that was other than herself. She thought about the blush that he had earlier when she smiled at him. Ah, that must be it. He didn't seem to be the kind of youkai who liked his emotions to be openly seen. He reminded her of Sessoumaru, his power she could sense a mile away, so strong and conflicting. Her miko energy was telling her he held to opposing forces within him, fire and ice, and, although a battle, he held the forces in check rather well. She could also feel a curious, yet fairly curious and menacing force from beneath his head band. However, as she sent out her Ki to touch it and get more information, the energy beneath head band reached out and…stroked her own in a way that was extremely pleasurable to her surprise.
The last one who had spoke was the most surprising, and familiar, of all. His hair a rose red, the same shade as the color of the rose she had found that morning beside her head, blew in the wind. His eyes were a deep forest green that made her think of running and never stopping, of freedom. Yet they flickered to gold as well, and the gold…It just kept making the tattoo on her neck tingle. His aura fluctuated, which confused her. It seemed as though he was two people in one and she could since a demonic aura in it as well as human.
She realized that she had been staring, blushing she turned her head to move to the side and get a better look at both demons at once. She still was rather suspicious of them.
“Who sent you?”
“I'm sorry, what?” The red head smiled sheepishly and tried to catch what she meant.
“You said someone sent you to help me. Who sent you?”
“Koenma, ruler of Rekai. He discovered that you had been kidnap and since you were the Shikon Miko, he sent out here to help you.” He watched as a confused look crossed her face.
“Rekai…?” Nigenkai, Makai, and now Rekai. What happened during that time after she had left the feudal era?
Kurama wondered how it was that she knew about demons and how to fight without knowing about the separation of the barriers. He thought about asking Yoko.
*Yoko what do you think about this?
The more I hear, the more the pieces are falling into place. However, new pieces I realize are missing. She is indeed an enigma, red. Always had been.
*Yoko, what's with the mysteriousness? You know something, why are you hiding it?
I have secrets, you know this Red. But this one you will find out soon, I just want to see how it plays out first. Know this Red, there is more to this woman than it seems.
Kurama nodded and looked closer at the woman before him.
“Rekai is the spirit world, Nigenkai is the human world, and Makai, where we are now, is the demon world. They were separated 300 years ago when the priests and priestesses got together with the gods of the time. They came to a conclusion that life would be better if the worlds were separated. They then combined their power to make the three worlds.” He watched as the young woman nodded her head.
“I apologize for attacking you. It was forward of me, I should have asked who you were.” She directed her statement to Hiei. He just turned his head, seemingly unable to think of anything to say. Kurama thought it interesting that Hiei seemed to be tongue tied. However, he wished he was tongue tied with what he said next.
“Yeah you should have asked, but I don't expect much from a human onna.” He smirked as her smile faultered., thinking he had one.
“Who shoved their foot up your behind? Oh wait, it was me.” Her feisty attitude was back, Kurama noted with humor, as her eyebrows clenched together and her eyes blazed with blue ferocity. Hiei on the other hand seemed to be enjoying her little fire back. Kurama noted, again, that Hiei was talking more than usually did with anyone other himself.
Yoko was running around in the back of Kurama's mind. Enjoying the way the girl he had missed for so long stared at Hiei unrelenting. He had given up on finding her again centuries ago since she was only human. But here she was looking the same as the last time he had seen her. Vaguely he wondered if she was the reincarnation of the girl he knew. But he knew that couldn't be the case. You only get two tries at reincarnation and the `Kikyo ` he had faced off with when he came looking back for her was one of her incarnations. He could remember like it happen yesterday.
Yoko had traveled along way after talking with Koronue about the silver rose tattoo. When the bat demon told him the probable meaning he came back as soon as possible to find the beauty he started to miss.
He came back to the forest near the well he had originally met her at. Their by a giant tree stood a woman that looked just like the one he was searching for. But he knew it wasn't her. It took a moment for him to realize their scent was different. Where his lover smelled of Vanilla and Wildberries, the woman before him…or whatever she was…smelled of clay and burnt dirt. She turned around to look at him and gave him a solid cold stare. Not the kind that would freeze you, but a dead stare. There was no real life in this woman.
“Who are you?” He asked.
“I could ask you the same question.”She replied.
“I am searching for a young woman that looks similar to you. She was dressed in miko garbs like yourself but they were purple and black.” The woman smiled at him.
“You're a bit late. The one you are looking for is my incarnation; but she is gone and will never come back.” The woman walked closer to him until she stood face to face with him and her stench filled his nostrils.
“What do you mean, `never come back'? Is she dead?” He swore he'd kill whoever killed his woman.
“It matters not.” She reached out a hand to caress his cheek. “But why go for an incarnation when you can have the original…” Her eyes, though dead, looked at him with longing. His stomach turned in disgust.
“I would rather not.” With that he flicked out his rose whip and sliced the shell of body before him in so many pieces the wind couldn't find them. How dare she touch him? His disgust was further increased as the souls of the long dead floated away. One in particular caught his eye. It was pink and stayed with him for a moment as if it was watching him. Then it floated over and caressed his cheek. It was warm and he smelled the scent of Vanilla and Wild Berries. Visions of blue eyes tortured him and he sighed deeply. He leaned into the spirit as it caressed his face and watched, amazed, as it dissipated, landing in a cascade waterfall over him.
This was not what he had imagined when he had set out this morning. Looking around disappointed, Yoko Kurama walked home, lonelier than he had ever been.
That day was a sad day. Yoko heaved a sigh in the recesses of Kurama's mind. That was in the past and now is the present. He watched the girl laugh at Hiei's expression of shock and irritation. She was his and soon, she would know it. He smiled a toothy smirk that was dangerous in many ways. Unfortunately the young woman did not see behind the veil of Kurama's green eyes. If she had, she might have run away screaming…or not.
I wanted to personally dedicate this chapter to aznangelstarQT and ponygirl2112 for being the first ones to review my story. Because of you guys I wrote this chapter. Again thank you. I hope you like and it lives up to your standards as far as fanfiction goes.
