Chapter one

Kagome Higurashi, junior high student, Tokyo resident, and shrine helper extraordinaire! At least that is how Kagome felt she should be addressed, seeing as all the work she did in the shrine should account for a title of honour. Alas she was forever cursed to help her senile grandpa organise the shrine shop almost daily.

It was the eve of her fifteenth birthday and Kagome figured that tonight of all nights she should not need to be reorganizing the shop. She robotically placed shrine trinkets and badly made shikon no tama copies on their corresponding shelves.

With a heavy sigh she paused to stare at one of the cheep, glass marbles, this one was pink representing the pure state of the jewel, it also came in black, red and clear, black representing the time it had been held my an evil hanyou who had tried to rule the world. Red for the colour it had been when another hanyou had killed the shikon's protector. And clear representing when a new miko had destroyed it.

Truthfully that was all Kagome could remember about the legend of the jewel, her grandpa though had retold the tale countless times, so many in fact that her younger brother, Souta, could mouth the tale word for word behind her grandpa's back.

“Kagome girl, be careful with those shikon key chains they shatter easily. In fact the real shikon was shattered once…” she tuned out her grandpa as he once again went into his storytelling mode.

After a while the tone of her grandpa's speech changed signalling he had asked her a question.
“Hmm, gramps, what was that?”

He grumbled a bit and she giggled.
“Teenagers these days, they have to respect for their elders. Speaking of teenagers how about opening an early birthday present?”

With a squeal of joy Kagome dropped the trinket she held in her hand, a replica of some sacred arrow that had something to do with the god tree.

“Oh gramps! Can I?”

Hiro Higurashi clucked his tongue at the youth's enthusiasm, but pulled his hand from behind his back.

With another squeal Kagome tore into the wrapped box, the joy froze on her face, however, when she viewed the box's contents.

“It is the mummified foot of a great kappa demon! It was cut from the kappa when…”
Grandpa once again launched into full blown storytelling mode.

Kagome gingerly picked the foot up by one of its claws. Well it certainly didn't belong to any kind of animal she had heard of before, perhaps gramps wasn't so senile, perhaps demons had existed?-

“The great kappa raised his mighty staff of flame, when the evil hanyou…”

-Then again maybe not.

With a yawn Kagome flung her pillow over her head and pushed the snooze button on her alarm.

“Kagome you had better be getting up now! That's the fourth time your alarm has gone off; you're going to be late for school!”

Slowly, Miouru Higurashi's voice and words filtered into Kagome's foggy mind. four times, alarm, hold on a second if the snooze button lasted ten minuets and she had turned it off three times before now… half an hour! She was going to be so late!

Kagome sprang from her bed, hair a mess, clothes askew and eyes wild, she rushed about the room getting dressed and cleaning herself up in record time, she ran down the stairs, grabbed her lunch and flew out the door yelling over her shoulder that she wasn't hungry and didn't need breakfast.

In typical Kagome fashion she did not look where she was going and tripped over here brother.

As she picked herself up from the pile of limbs and backpacks she and her brother had made, she yelled her frustration.
“Augh, Souta! What's wrong with you I'm going to be so late.” She stopped when she saw tears in her brother's eyes.

“Kagome, it's Buyou, he went into the well house. I've called but he won't come out, and you know Gramps said it's not safe for me to go in there; please can you get Buyou out?

Kagome heaved a sigh, some birthday this was turning out to be, late for school, a missing cat, a toad demon's foot. She shuddered at the memory.

Kagome hated the well house and now the hated the cat for running into it. The well house was always dark and smelled of rotting wood. The well had been sealed years ago when the previous shrine keeper felt a draft from inside the well.

Kagome walked down the old stairs and peered around in the near darkness. A flash of gold caught her attention in the far corner on the other side of the well. As she walked past the old well, a shiver ran up her spine, ignoring it she leaped at the cat and caught him by his tail.

“Stupid cat, get over here.” Buyou yowled when she pulled his tail to drag him closer. Really if he hadn't bolted she would have had a much more comfortable hold on the feline.

Picking the cat up, she walked past the well and passed the fat feline to her brother.
“Keep him away from the well house next time Souta; I'm going to be so late for school.”

At the sound of a heavy rattling Kagome made to turn, but a splintering sound erupted behind her. She heard Souta scream as three sets of arms wrapped themselves around her.

Suddenly all Kagome could feel was cold, the restricting pressure of the arms around her chest, and… something slimy licking her cheek. With a squeak Kagome pushed at the thing that had licked her.

“Power, I feel strong again. I can feel... the Shikon! Give me the jewel of four souls!”
The creature hissed in a voice that could only be described as evil. Kagome felt spittle hit her cheek as the creature spoke.

“I don't know what your talking about, let me go.” With a push and a flash of light Kagome felt herself fall, and then another flash of light this time almost blue and she felt solid ground under her hands and knees.
