A Child’s Trust

A little girl sits in a field picking flowers and humming to herself. Her checkered yukata rides up her slender legs as she sits indelicately, braiding the flowers into crowns and small bouquets. Not far from where she sits a little toad demon can be heard squawking his indignance over being left to babysitting duties by his master.

She can hear him muttering to himself about his disgraceful situation as nanny to “the disgusting little wretch” and how “Sesshoumaru-sama should just leave the filthy human at the next village and be done with her.” She snickers in amusement, because for all his bluster even Master Jaken would put his life in harms way for her sake.

A small smile crosses her face as she thinks on her lord. She is well taken care of, properly clothed and fed. Though most of the time she cares for her own basic needs, by bartering with townspeople or hunting for her own food, she knows that Sesshoumaru-sama would never let any harm befall her.

Most days she spends alone with Jaken and Ah-Un, but she does not fear. Her lord is always there to protect her when she is most in need. She delights in the small amount of time she spends in his presence by singing and dancing about him. Sometimes he even allows her to braid her flowers in his hair, much to Jaken’s chagrin.

Suddenly, he appears beside her and in her haste to greet him, her flowers are dropped and forgotten. She quickly jumps up and unabashedly hugs his empty kimono sleeve. Unused to such displays, he merely quirks an eyebrow at her affection.

“Come, Rin. It is time to go,” he says.

Without another word he turns and begins walking, never looking to see if she follows. He has commanded and expects obedience.

“Where are we going, Sesshoumaru-sama?” she asks, as she skips along beside him.

“You need not concern yourself with such details, Rin.”

“Yes, my lord.” And she follows with the trust only a child’s heart can have.

In the distance, Jaken -who has just realized he is alone- can be heard shrieking, “My lord, you’ve returned. Wait, don’t leave me!”

When two days later, she awakens to find her lord gone, it does not surprise her. He rarely tells her when he is leaving or when he will return. There is no need for words of parting. He will return -in a day, a week- it does not matter when. She knows he will be coming back for her.

What she fears the most is the day he tells her goodbye. She knows it is then that he will not be returning and she will be alone.
