Song: Cold Cold Heart By: Norah Jones
The moon was full and shining down on the group of Shard hunters. Sango was lying next to the fire with Kirara, Miroku was leaning against a tree, Kagome and Shippo were curled up in Kagome's sleeping bag, and Tala had made herself comfy in the tree Miroku was leaning against. There was one thing missing, Inuyasha.
Earlier that night, Kagome had seen the soul stealers of Kikyou flying around. And of course, as soon as Inuyasha saw them, off he went. Kagome sighed, and he hadn't come back since.
Kagome sighed and tried to let sleep find her. But sadly, the Sandman was busy elsewhere. Shippo mumbled and turned in his sleep and Kagome stiffened. Well, if she couldn't sleep, there was no reason to the others Kagome reasoned. So, Kagome carefully eased herself out of the sleeping bag and crept toward her backpack. She stealthily undid the zipper on one pouch and removed her CD player. Clutching the small piece of modern technology, Kagome walked out of camp and into the woods.
She wasn't too worried because she couldn't sense any youkai within her range (which had grown to be one mile in all directions). Eventually, Kagome came to a cliff. It was a breathtaking site. She gasped wordlessly at the beauty before her. The full moon shone down huge creating more than enough light to see by, the stars shone down in all their glory. There were so many! Hundreds maybe thousands more than what she usually saw at home! There was also a large rock jutting out from the cliff large enough and (seemingly) stable enough to sit on. It seemed like some otherworldly power and had made and led her to this place just for her. Kagome walked over to the rock, and after gingerly testing it deemed it secure enough to sit on. She sat on the rock with her legs dangling over the side of the cliff. She then slipped her head phones on and pushed, Play.
`Ah Nora!' she thought blissfully, `Sing to me!'
Kagome sat in contented silence for a while until…
"Crud!" she muttered observing the "battery low" sign. "Fine, be that way."
She shut off the player and set it next to her. Suddenly, one of Kikyou's soul stealers floated a few meters in front of her. The silence which had only seconds before seemed welcome and tranquil now seemed ominous. Kagome stiffened and spread her miko senses. She felt no sign of Kikyou, but something else tugged at her senses. She brushed it off, as she felt it wasn't a threat. Kagome sighed and stared at the moon thinking of Kikyou and Inuyasha. Then, suddenly inspired, she began to sing.
"I've tried so hard my dear to show
That you're my every dream
Yet you're afraid each thing I do
Is just some evil scheme."
Kagome smiled the words of the song were so true. They applied perfectly. And she liked how her voice echoed and spread passed the cliff to the valley below. Like she was singing to the world.
"A memory from your lonesome past
Keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold cold heart
Another love before my time
Made your heart sad an' blue
And so my heart is paying now
For things I didn't do."
Kagome's hand flew to her heart and covered it. Again, it was true. Every time, Kikyou came around, Inuyasha went away, and she felt like her heart was ripping in two. And, it always caused a fight. Which, she smiled wryly, brought her to the next part of her song.
"In anger unkind words are said
That make the teardrops start
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold cold heart?"
She smiled slightly and continued.
"There was a time when I believed
That you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled
To a memory"
Again, so true. Kagome sighed and finished her song.
"The more I learn to care for you
The more we drift apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind
And melt your cold cold heart?"
`And that," Kagome finished to herself, `was the biggest thing.'
"Why is that Inuyasha?" she whispered, "All I ever did was try to be your friend. Maybe even love you. So why do you feel that you have to punish me?"
Kagome picked herself up along with her CD player and started back towards camp. Hopefully, Inuyasha would be back by now. Unbeknownst to her, two golden eyes watched from the tree-line. They had witnessed and heard everything.
