Kagome jumped as a soft knock sounded on her door. Mentally berating herself for her behavior, she opened the door. She came face-to-face with a bowed head of brown hair.
“Uh, yes?” She asked the Youkai hesitantly, taking in her appearance. She was about the same height as herself, and light-skinned as well. She wore a simple sage green kimono with a black obi, her long brown hair pulled into a braid down her back.
“Kagome-sama, I am Ayako and I shall be escorting you to the dining hall. Sesshoumaru-sama also said that I will be attending to your needs personally during your stay.”
“Please, just Kagome is fine.” Kagome found herself staring into startled yet beautiful light brown eyes.
“As you please, Kagome-sa--Kagome.” The blue-eyed woman smiled at the correction as they left the room.
“Please, you must not treat me so, I am of no royalty.”
“Yet you wear the imperial robes of China and you currently reside in the room meant for the Lady of the Western Lands.” Kagome was caught off guard by this comment and a glance told her the woman was smirking.
“Okay the first part is true, but is my room really--”
“Yes.”
“Oh.” They stopped at a great set of giant double-doors.
“The dining hall, my Lady.” The servant bowed once, “I shall see to you when you retire to bed.” Kagome nodded.
“I’ll see you then, Ayako.” Said woman opened the door and Kagome whispered a quick “Arigato” before stepping regally into the room. She was greeted with the sight of a lavish dining hall. The white stone walls continued in here, this time adorned with massive tapestries depicting several battles. All seemed to include a big dog demon. Long lengths of blue and gold silk lined the edges of the room; where the ceiling and the walls met, and hung in each corner of the room; from the ceiling all the way to the floor, strangely resembling Sesshoumaru’s obi. A servant immediately appeared at her side and escorted her to the head of the table where Sesshoumaru sat, a smiling Rin sat to his left. Thanking the servant softly before taking her seat, she smiled at Sesshoumaru and Rin, receiving a grin from one and soft, smiling eyes from the other. The meal was pleasant and cheerful, where the trio shared old memories and caught up on what had happened during the last seven years. Rin was swooning by the time Kagome had finished telling them about being a princess in China.
“I wish a was a Chinese princess..” Rin sighed dreamily. Kagome giggled as Sesshoumaru frowned a little.
“Oh but Rin, I think living here in Sesshoumaru-sama’s castle is much better than living in the Imperial Palace! You have hot springs here! And you don’t have to get up at ungodly hours in the morning! And you can wear your hair down! Speaking of which--” Kagome pulled the golden pins from her hair. Sesshoumaru watched, fascinated, as her long ebony locks cascaded down from her head. Rin squealed.
“Kagome-chan! Your hair is so long!!” Kagome giggled.
“I know.” She passed the golden pins she had been holding to Rin. “Here, these are yours now.” The thirteen year-old looked towards Sesshoumaru for permission. When the Taiyoukai nodded, Rin smiled up at the miko-turned-Chinese-princess.
“Arigato-gozaimasu!!”
220;Do-itashi-mashite.” Sesshoumaru allowed a smile to grace his lips as the two most important females in his life laughed and smiled while playing around with their hair. Kagome looked up at him once she’d finish styling Rin’s hair with the pins. She offered him a smile that made his insides feel warm. His own smile widened in return and she grinned happily before turning back to Rin.
“Kagome-chan, let’s go out to the gardens!”
“I don’t know Rin, we’ll have to ask Sesshouma--”
“We’ll go to the gardens.” Kagome blinked as his silky smooth voice washed over her, barely registering what he had said. She was brought out of her trance when Rin cried happily and pulled Kagome out and into the gardens. The Taiyoukai followed silently, a small smile on his face.

Kagome sat in the middle of a field of flowers, her long, jet-black hair woven into a braid, flowers interwoven as well. Sesshoumaru sat silently beside her as Rin ran about picking more flowers. She smiled at the way the moonlight lit up the Taiyoukai’s hair, the way his eyes shone like the golden embers in a crackling fire. Sighing contentedly, she rested her head against his shoulder.
“You were swift to grant her permission for this.”
“It has been a while since she has been so cheerful and carefree. I prefer this to her moody rebellion. It seems like just yesterday she was trying to braid flowers into my hair.” Kagome giggled.
“Well, I’m sorry to have stolen your hair-stylist.”
“It is of no consequence,” he replied, amusement coloring his tone. She made a small sound of acknowledgement, a smile lifting her lips. Rin soon joined them and wove even more flowers into Kagome’s hair. Afterwards she lay with her head in the elder woman’s lap, staring at the stars as Kagome hummed softly. Stroking the young girl’s brownish-black hair, she looked down to find Rin sleeping. With a soft smile, she stopped humming. It was silent for a moment before Sesshoumaru spoke, slightly stumbling over his words.
“That tune...you were humming. What was it?” Glancing over at him, she saw the curiosity in his eyes. Giggling softly, she couldn’t help but think he was like a puppy sometimes.
“It’s a song from my time. Would you like to hear some of it?” At his hesitant nod, she looked up at the stars and took a deep breath. She began to tap her fingers to the beat.

Sesshoumaru blinked after she had finished. Blushing, she turned away. “Sorry, I’m not at all good at singing.” His brow furrowing, he took hold of her chin and turned her head to face him.
“This Sesshoumaru enjoyed your performance very much.”
“You don’t need to lie. I saw your face.” She muttered, unconsciously pouting.
“I was just caught by surprise, the rhythm was quite upbeat, considering the song. Especially with such verses.” Deciding that he was being honest, she nodded.
“Fast, upbeat songs are quite popular. I only sang a part of the original song though. I guess you could say it's the part that appeals to me the most.” A comfortable silence fell between them once again, broken when Kagome noticed a familiar figure approaching. “Ayako?”
“Konbanwa, Kagome-sama, Sesshoumaru-sama.” The brown-haired woman received a similar reply and a stoic nod. “I’m here to take Rin-chan to bed.” Gently refusing the blue-eyed woman’s offer to help, she carried the preteen back into the palace. Kagome watched them as they disappeared into a doorway.
“Sesshou?”
“Hn.”
“Did you really look for me after I disappeared? And you really didn’t give up after all these years?” She waited patiently as the seconds ticked by.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you just assume I was dead?” He snorted.
“This Sesshoumaru trained you himself. I trust in my ability to teach exceptional survival skills.” She frowned, trying to figure out if he was complimenting her or himself. Seeing her inner turmoil, he added with an amused voice, “Besides, I trust you of all people to be sensible and keep a level head.” She gave him a lopsided smile before lowering herself to the ground. She rolled to rest on her side and stared up at him.
“I really did miss you, Sesshou-kun.” Scanning the area, he deftly lifted her and sat her in his lap. His arms wrapped around her waist as he buried his nose into her hair, inhaling her scent deeply.
“And I you, Kagome.” She sighed contentedly and let herself melt into his embrace, enjoying the warmth he was radiating. Breathing in his distinctly clean, male scent, she felt her eyes drifting shut.
The Taiyoukai gazed down at the woman in his arms for several minutes afterwards before rising and carrying her to her bedroom. He slipped her out of her outer robe, leaving her in her short inner robe and the simple-cut dress beneath that. Pulling the midnight blue sheets up around her, he caressed her cheek softly, his fingers lingering on her lips. When she pressed a soft kiss to his fingertips and murmured a drowsy “Oyasumi, Sesshou” he froze. Listening to her even breathing and steady heartbeat, he realized she was still asleep. Smiling softly, he pressed a kiss to her temple before rising. Striding silently to the door, he paused and whispered an “Oyasumi-nasai, Kagome” before shutting the door.

In her sleep, Kagome smiled.

Excerpt from My Will [Performed by Dream]

I've known all too well about pretending to be strong.
But since then, my doubts have vanished.

There's definitely things I want to show you
And so many words I want to hear
I want to see all sides of you, when you laugh and cry
So I'll stop waiting and seize my "chance"

I think of you, and I feel like that alone is enough to make my heart grow stronger.
I always, always wish that these fleeting thoughts would reach you...
