A Deeper Destiny: Chapter Ten

Squeals of laughter greeted his ears as he walked through the hall adjacent to the gardens. Before the giggles could die down, they started anew; loud, boisterous, and utterly bubbly. Sesshoumaru paused in his smooth stride, feet stopping as he listened to the carefree laughter. Curiosity peaking, he stepped off the wooden path and into the grass, making his way through the rock-lined flowerbeds.
He found Kagome and Rin sitting on a knoll, the one that overlooked the small pond. And on the pond, to his surprise, was Jaken and himself. On closer inspection, he realized the life-like puppets were made of flowers, ferns, and grass. A careful prod with his aura, and he recognized Kagome’s miko.
“Forgive me Milord!! This lowly servant is unworthy of you!!” Kagome mocked Jaken’s pitiful squawks as the puppet bowed repeatedly on the pond’s surface. Rin burst into another fit of giggles at this. Kagome smiled and switched her voice.
“Silence Jaken,” Kagome said in a deep, low voice. The puppet Sesshoumaru rubbed his temple. “Your voice does grate on my nerves so.” The Jaken made of flowers began to bow again, crying out piteous apologies. Rin collapsed onto her side, laughing hard. Kagome smiled and joined in a bit, helping the teen up and brushing the dirt off the younger girl’s kimono. When Rin’s laughs had died down, the flowery Sesshoumaru and Jaken bowed dramatically. Rin clapped gleefully, a toothy grin plastered on her face.
“An interesting performance indeed.” Kagome jumped a bit, and looked over her shoulder. Sure enough, there stood Sesshoumaru.
“Sesshoumaru! Ah, we... Um, we--”
“Kawaii!” Their gazes broke as they turned their attentions to Rin.
“Oh!” Kagome’s soft exclamation was barely heard, the trio too caught up in the spectacle. The flowers that had Sesshoumaru and Jaken had been built of had burst apart and were now swirling gracefully in the breeze, some landing artfully on the pond’s surface.
“Sugoi!” Rin cried, eyes bright. She snuck a glance behind her. Her guardian, Sesshoumaru, and Kagome were standing awfully close. She watched as Sesshoumaru’s gaze switched to Kagome’s face, and how he smiled when Kagome looked up at him.
She smiled when Kagome took hold of Sesshoumaru’s hand. They were so enthralled with each other that they didn’t notice her slinking away. Before she slipped back into the castle, she took a glimpse at the couple. They were in each other’s arms now, enjoying the scenery. Rin smiled brightly; maybe her childhood wish would come true after all.
She listened intently as he entered and shut the doors, heart speeding up as his rapid gait stayed constant. She looked around herself. He was headed toward these scrolls, and fast. She quickly slipped into the space between two shelves in the preceding row, just as he arrived at the wall of scrolls.
She watched silently as he examined a certain column, the one with scrolls on old rituals. He swiftly pulled a scroll out and checked its contents. Kagome strained her neck to see over his shoulder, but to no avail. Closing her eyes for a moment, she let out her breath and stepped forward.
“Sesshoumaru?” She tried hard to keep the slight adrenaline rush from her voice. The Taiyoukai jerked slightly and spun around to face her-- but not without stuffing the scroll into the sleeve of his kimono first.
“Kagome. I did not realize you were in here as well.” She giggled comfortably, totally avoiding eye contact with his sleeve.
“That’s probably because I was practicing at hiding my presence. Sorry if I startled you.”
“It is of no consequence.” He offered her a small smile.
“So, are you looking for something?” She gestured to the scrolls behind him.
“Nothing of great importance. I was merely browsing around.”
“Alright. Would you like to take a walk in the gardens then?” She looked up at him expectantly.
“I’m afraid I’ll have to decline, I,” he paused, “have matters to attend to in my office.” Kagome turned to the shelf, hiding her fallen features.
“I see.” She turned back, smiling cheerfully. “I’ll walk you to your office then.” He nodded silently. “Come on then, Sesshou!” Kagome grabbed his hand and pulled him along with her. Out in the hall, she slowed her pace and walked alongside him. Her heart sang when his large hand squeezed hers comfortingly. Stopping at the door of his study, she released his hand and smiled brightly up at him.
“I’ll see you at the afternoon meal later,” Kagome said while turning around. “Goodbye then,” she tossed over her shoulder.
“Kagome!” She began to turn back around.
“Ye-- Oh!” She was then silenced by Sesshoumaru’s lips crashing down on hers. Her wide eyes began to flutter closed, her cheeks still pink as she returned the kiss. Her hands rested on his firm chest as his hands came up to wrap around her waist. Obeying his silent request when his tongue brushed against her lower lip, she opened her mouth; allowing his probing appendage to ransack her mouth.
Her breath effectively stolen, Sesshoumaru pulled away and rested his forehead on hers. He stared into her eyes; faraway sapphire orbs that sparkled dreamily. Placing a chaste kiss on her now-rosy lips, he brushed her hair from her face, and pulled her into a tight hug.
“Will you still be taking that walk in the gardens?” Kagome nodded against his chest. “I shall escort you from the gardens to the dining hall at mealtime then.” He kissed her forehead gently before entering his office.
Pressing a hand to her heart, she took a deep breath. ‘That was me, and Sesshoumaru... And our... Our children.’ The shock fell from her face as her lips rose in a smile. “I suppose, that what I just saw, is not a bad thing at all.” Kagome sat back on her hands, looking up at the sky. “Am I a seer now? Some sort of prophetess?” She laughed. “Rather, I hope I am. I would love to raise a family with Sesshoumaru.” She was silent for a short while, listening to the breeze in the trees and the song of birds. “I would love...” She repeated absentmindedly, her azure abysses staring blankly at a passing cloud.
Her eyes regained focus and widened as her mind registered a single thought. “I... Love him?”
The mating of a Youkai and Miko has not yet occurred during these ages. It is said that a Youkai and Miko will never be able to mate unless they possessed tremendous strength and were equal in power. Had there ever existed a Youkai and a Miko of equal strength, they would have to overcome their differences and love each other with no hint of doubt in their hearts. Thus, the reason there has been no Youkai Miko matings.
In spite of this, prophecies speak of a Youkai Lord who falls in love with a Miko from another world. Their mating would cause their prowess to escalate to unparalleled heights. Their children would retain extraordinary powers to end these times of hatred and suffering and mend the rift between the two races that inhabit this world.
The mating itself should abide by the Mating Ritual. Upon consummation, the Youkai will mark their intended. In return, the Miko’s fangs should elongate and the Miko will bite her mate.
If a Youkai and Miko with hearts tainted with doubt were to attempt to mate, their powers would fluctuate violently and result in death.
Sesshoumaru paused in his reading. ‘Death? If even a shadow of doubt existed in either of our hearts, we would die.’ He looked back over the second passage. ‘And what of this prophecy? A Youkai Lord who falls in love with a Miko from another world... Could it be...?’

“Okay, Rin. I think that’s enough for today’s lessons!” The brown-eyed teen cheered and began putting away the ink stones and brushes. “I’ll see you at lunch, sweetie. Stay out of trouble ‘til then!” Rin nodded her head and took off after a quick hug. The big, wooden library doors shut with a soft thud as Kagome sat back down. Stacking the scrolls into a neat little pile, she got up, deciding to look for something to read. Bypassing the shelves with the books with bound pages, she made her way to the farthest wall; the one with the old scrolls. Just as she was about to take a scroll, she sensed someone coming down the hall, and fast. Instantly recognizing Sesshoumaru’s aura, she smiled, but frowned when she felt the anxiety in his aura. When he paused in front of the library doors, she pulled her aura into herself and masked her scent. She listened intently as he entered and shut the doors, heart speeding up as his rapid gait stayed constant. “Kami, he knows how to take your breath away.” Fingers to her lips once again, she let the kiss play in her head. ‘Well, that wasn’t the first time he kissed me... There was that kiss that night he gave Tetsuaiga to her. But this kiss, it was different. It touched her soul.’ Blushing like a schoolgirl, she ran a finger along the surface of the pond she sat next to. Watching the water ripple, she gasped at the reflection she saw on the distorted surface. Sesshoumaru sat beside her, holding a newborn baby with golden eyes and black hair. She herself held a infant with silver hair and bright, blue eyes. She blinked, and the image was gone. A wide-eyed woman in a cerulean kimono stared back at her.Pressing a hand to her heart, she took a deep breath. ‘That was me, and Sesshoumaru... And our... A clawed hand with magenta stripes crawling up its wrist twitched, then shook as it was clenched into a fist. Sesshoumaru glanced back at the single roll of paper at the edge of his desk. Cursing beneath his breath, he dropped his ink brush and pushed away the letter he was writing. Lifting the aged scroll carefully, he rolled it open and smoothed the crinkled paper. Searching the text meticulously, he traced the lines of kanji with a claw until he found what he was looking for.The mating of a Youkai and Miko has not yet occurred during these ages.
