A Deeper Destiny: Chapter Fourteen

Disclaimer: Inuyasha is the innovative creation of the prestigious Rumiko Takahashi. I do not own him, however, I do own this story and any new characters I may have mixed in. Curse of the Golden Flower, and any characters that may be from it, belongs to Zhang Yimou as far as I’m concerned.

“You’ve been looking for us, Sesshoumaru?” Kagome hoped the slight tremor in her voice was undetectable, blinking so that her wide eyes returned to normal and fighting down the slight heat in her cheeks. ‘What if he heard? What if he saw my stitching?’ Her heart raced as Sesshoumaru stood silently. After a short eternity, the Taiyoukai turned around, looking out the doorway.

“Yes, you will be leaving for the Northern lands with Rin soon. We have matters to discuss.” Mareo stepped forward.

“Then I shall take my leave, Sesshoumaru-sama.”

“Your presence is necessary, stay where you are.” Mareo froze at the quick command, stepping back and resuming a casual, yet attentive, stance.

“As you wish, my Lord.”

“What do we need to discuss, Sesshoumaru?” Kagome discreetly slid a hand into her sleeve and tucked the embroidery deeper into her clothes.

“You will take Rin to Lord Toyoharu’s palace shortly. You shall stay as their guest overnight and return to me tomorrow morning.” Kagome nodded.

“Yes, I know this.” Sesshoumaru glanced at her, and she flinched internally. He wasn’t done speaking yet, apparently.

“Yes, but Mareo will be accompanying you.”

“Eh?” Was the response he received from the room’s other two occupants.

“Mareo? Him?” Kagome asked, pointing at the violet-eyed male. Mareo nodded his head, a hand rising to point at himself.

“Me?”

“Yes, you, as you so eloquently put it. Now I suggest you start packing for your journey, Mareo. Kagome, your luggage awaits in the front hall. Rin is waiting impatiently; I shall escort you to her.” The raven-haired warrior left to do his Lord’s biding as the Taiyoukai and Miko made their way to the front hall.

“That was a beautiful song,” Sesshoumaru remarked quietly. Kagome blushed, sneaking a peek at him through her eyelashes. His face was blank of all emotion.

“Ah, thank you.”

“Hn.” After a long pause, Sesshoumaru spoke again.

“Kagome, Lord Toyoharu is an old family friend. He was very good friends with my father. If you could please...”

“Sesshou! Have you no faith in me? I promise not to make a fool of myself and to not tarnish your reputation. I would never soil the great Sesshoumaru’s impeccable honor.” Slightly taken aback, he let the shock slide from his features as the corners of his mouth lifted. Kagome flashed him a dazzling smile, looping her arm through his. Before they reached the end of the hall, Sesshoumaru pulled her into an open doorway and slid the door shut behind him. Eyes wide and momentarily speechless, Kagome stared up at him in awe. The room was fairly dark, yet the Taiyoukai seemed radiant in this half-light, golden eyes smoldering and silver hair glinting. When an arm snaked around her waist to pull her against him, her hands slid around his neck on reflex.

“Kagome,” he murmured against her lips, before claiming them as his own. Kagome felt her knees tremble as his lips caressed her own with a tenderness almost surreal. But she needn’t worry about her knees, for his strong arm tightened round her waist till they were pressed so tightly together hat she had no clue where he began and she ended. A clawed hand slithered into her hair and tilted her head backwards. Feeling his tongue upon her bottom, pleading for entrance, she parted her lips, allowing his appendage to enter her mouth and taste her hungrily. She returned his fervor, tongue tangling with his until their breaths were sucked form their lungs. Breaking apart, he rested his forehead upon hers. Sesshoumaru released his hold on her neck and cupped her cheek gently.

“This Sesshoumaru... Will miss you.” His eyes danced as an endearing pink rose in her cheeks. ‘So she blushes when I tell her that I miss her, yet I get nothing when I steal her breath with a kiss.’ Chuckling, he placed a soft kiss on her forehead.

“I will return to you tomorrow morning. But...” She smiled, sapphire eyes shining with happiness, “I will miss you too.”

Mareo tapped his foot impatiently. His Lord had said to pack his belongings. He’d done so, and now he was waiting for his Lord and the Lady Kagome to arrive. Rin was standing next to him, talking a mile a minute as she ranted on and on about her kimono and if it were the right one and what would Amaya-chan think? Mareo shuddered at the mere mention of Amaya’s name. The Lord Toyoharu’s only granddaughter was one he had to stay away from. She was just as her name implied; like night rain. Dark, glistening locks of ebony that spilled everywhere about her, pale skin and smoky gray eyes that looked like looked the sky on a rainy night. Usually soft spoken and well-mannered, she became a carefree, regular teenager when Rin-chan, her best friend, was around. No longer was she the young Lady Amaya, heiress one day destined to rule the Northern Lands. When Rin was near, she was just Amaya, a regular thirteen year-old demoness.

A young demoness that made him uneasy. When she looked at him, he felt as though her gray eyes were seeing right through him. Like they pierced right through your heart and soul. Her eyes always creeped him out. Maybe she had the blood of a seer running through her veins. He’d only experienced that creepy-crawly feeling with one other person; on old dragon-Youkai that had turned out to be a seer. He shook his head to clear his crowded thoughts just as the missing Taiyoukai and Miko entered the front hall. Rin squealed and started running off at the mouth about Kagome’s dress. As the three departees and the Taiyoukai exited the entrance of the place, a luggage-loaded Ah-Un, as well as men from the Western Lands military, rose into the sky, heading north. Kagome smiled in awe at the assortment of colors the Youkai spheres produced. Tearing her eyes from the orbs of light, she chanced a look at Sesshoumaru. He seemed his usual impassive self, but his wilted glance in her direction told her all she needed to know.

Handing the brocade bag Rin had been holding for her to Mareo, she gave Sesshoumaru a smile before stepping close to the young warrior. Grasping Rin’s hand, she waved with her free hand as Mareo’s Youkai sphere rose from his feet to surround them. Rising into the sky, she watched Sesshoumaru’s stately form fade into a silvery speck.

Toyoharu chuckled as he watched his dark-haired granddaughter pace the stone floor impatiently. He glanced behind him and up the great stone steps that led to his palace. Everyone else waited patiently at the head of the stairs, while he stood here, at the foot, with an edgy teenager who was muttering nonsense about her apparently late guests.

He glanced over his shoulder when he heard a shout and saw that his family, courtiers, and servants were pointing at the sky. Directing his attention upwards, he chuckled as Amaya cried out happily. There, in the sky, was a procession of light orbs of various colors, followed by Sesshoumaru’s personal dragon, which was tailed by a single Youkai sphere. The convoy of light orbs landed first, and formed two straight lines of men in white haori and ultramarine hakama. The dragon landed next, close to the steps; where his servants ran down to unload the luggage.

A collective gasp was let loose as the very last sphere of light touched ground and dissipated. There was Rin, looking adorable in her vermilion kimono, eyes bright and grinning from ear to ear. And then there was that young warrior from last time, Sesshoumaru’s prodigy. But standing between the two was a newcomer. Smiling shyly and looking about herself, she definitely had everyone’s attention, whether she knew it or not.

She was definitely Japanese, despite the Chinese clothes she wore. Clothed in the traditional three-layered outfit of one of great royalty, she wore a cream under dress and golden silk net inner robe, ensemble finished off with rich saffron silk outer robe embroidered with golden dragons. Her long, knee-length hair floated about her, half up in an intricate bun, held together by golden pins with dangling jade and gold. Lips painted red and dusted with gold powder, eyelids smeared with smoky gold and amber. Focusing in on her eyes, the great Lord Toyoharu blinked, then craned his neck forward. It couldn’t be, her eyes seemed to be the deepest of blues. That was rare, even for Youkai. The darkest he had ever seen was steely sort of blue, his own family carrying the trait of icy blue eyes. Composing himself as Rin, Mareo and the woman approached, he scolded his granddaughter.

“Amaya! Collect yourself!” The teen looked at him dubiously, but stilled and composed herself.

Kagome forced away the wisps of nervousness that had wound themselves around her mind. She could do this; Sesshoumaru had faith in her to represent him. She studied the pair waiting for them cautiously, hoping they wouldn’t catch her staring. The man had long, silvery gray hair tied up in a coiffure and tanned skin from many centuries under the sun. Dressed in a black and rusty bronze kimono, complete with armor and intricate obi, he screamed power. The young girl beside him, whom she assumed was this Amaya-chan Rin kept talking about, stood perfectly still with her hands folded together and head slightly lowered to assume the look of reverential respect. Yet even at this distance, Kagome could see the trembling of her excitement and the slight sway in her posture as she rocked on her heels. Walking down the path between the lines of warriors, she gripped Rin’s hand tighter and smiled at the teen when she squeezed reassuringly. Quickly approaching the Lord of the Northern Lands and his granddaughter, Rin’s hand slipped from her own as they stopped before the formidable pair. Bowing, Kagome spoke.

“Lord Toyoharu of the Northern Lands, I bear the unfortunate news that Lord Sesshoumaru could not make it today to see Rin off. I, as well as Mareo of the Western Lands, have come in his place.” Her head remained lowered as she waited for a response.

“My dear, you are much too formal.” Her eyes rose at his chuckle. Hesitantly, she stood up straight, nodding respectfully. “This is my only granddaughter, Amaya, heir to the Northern throne, and,” another chuckle, “Rin-chan’s best friend.” Kagome bowed respectfully. ‘Heir? Shouldn’t her parents take the throne?’

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Rin’s told me so much about you.” The dark-eyed teen bowed in reply.

“Yes, and she has told me of you as well, Kagome-sama.” Before Kagome could ask the girl to refrain from using honorifics, she was cut off by the Northern Lord’s exclamation.

“Kagome?! You are Kagome?” She nodded, confused and at a total loss. Mareo stepped forward slightly.

“Lord Toyoharu, if I may. Lady Kagome knows not her fame. It is true, she is the Kagome. Renowned Miko, Destroyer of the Dark Hanyou Naraku, Guardian of the Shikon no Tama, and, most recently, Princess Jinghua of China’s Imperial Family.” The Northern Lord’s pale blue eyes sparkled with a youthful radiance.

“Ah! Kagome-sama! I’ve heard about your tale up until your disappearance a few years back. It is an honor to have one as prestigious as you grace our home.” Kagome allowed herself to be herded up the stairs, still dumbstruck by Lord Toyoharu’s words. ‘I have a tale? I’m famous?’ She groaned internally. ‘When I get back tomorrow, I’m going to have a serious talk with Sesshoumaru.’

Back in the Western Lands, Sesshoumaru paused on his way to conference with his generals to rub at his ear. Jaken looked up at his Lord and stifled a giggle.
“Your ear burns, Milord?” At the usual ‘Hn,’ Jaken hid the mischievous glint in his bulbous eyes. “It is said that when your ears burn, you are in someone’s thoughts. Maybe the Lady Kagome is thinking of you--” Jaken broke off into a terrified squawk as he caught sight of his Lord’s icy stare.

Kagome sighed and sank into the soft futon, staring at the waxing moon hanging rather high in the sky. She was exhausted. After a long afternoon meal where she pretty much retold her whole life from seven years ago to now, she had spent some time talking to Lord Toyoharu, where she got to see his wise and caring side, the part of him that made a worthy, benevolent ruler. Aside from that, he was just a silly grandfather. She had learned that his only son and wife had died during a minor war four years ago, leaving him to raise their daughter. They were still talking when they were called to partake in the evening meal, and after that, Rin stole her away to share her with Amaya, where she shared about her experiences as a princess. They had gone crazy over her clothes and accessories, Amaya especially enthralled with her eyes. Kagome smiled sadly as she remembered what the girl had told her.

“I wish I had eyes like yours. Chichiue had eyes like Jii-chan’s. But I got Haha’s eyes instead.” A lone tear drop unnoticed onto the pillow from the corner of her eye.

Closing her eyes, she relished in the soft silk of the bedding. Her hair was still damp from her bath, but she didn’t care, she was drained. Blinking up at the moon drowsily, he pictured a moonlit Sesshoumaru. She drifted off, a soft smile on her lips.

Sesshoumaru picked up the needle and golden thread from the low table in the entertainment room he’d found Kagome and Mareo in earlier today. He had already searched the piano, the pile of cushions, and every nook and cranny of the room. He couldn’t find the damn embroidery. Growling, he opened his clenched fist to stare at the gold thread angrily. Gold, gold.. His eyes were gold! But then again, so were Inuyasha’s. He had a blue and gold obi. Putting the thread against his obi, he snarled as he realized they weren’t the same color. His mind searched frantically for someone who could fit the person in her embroidery. Gold... Gold... He frowned as her family back in China crossed his mind. Jai? No, their relationship was only brother and sister. Wan? Hm.. No. Yuu? No, too young. The Emperor? Sesshoumaru shuddered. Kagome and Ping? Ha! That was a snowball’s chance in hell. Besides, Kagome had worked too hard for the Emperor and Empress to accept their marriage and eventually fall in love.
Fighting the urge to rip out his hair, Sesshoumaru sighed. It was going to be a long night.
