A/N: 70 REVIEWS!!!! YAY!!
Yes, I know, you are all very disappointed in me for bringing about Kagome's death. But I dreamt this about a year ago, and became some of my inspiration for this fic. So yes, it may be cruel, but it was necessary. Many of you believe that it is Inuyasha who Kagome will be confronted by. Chehehe.. I'm so glad none of you saw this coming. It won't be Inuyasha, I'll say that much, but another person who has come to Kagome once before. I don't know if any of you will remember, but Kagome spoke of this person during the earlier chapters.

Sesshoumaru stood alone in a circle of light, everything else covered in darkness. Another shaft of light appeared, this one with Kagome in it. She was kneeling, face buried in her hands as she cried for Inuyasha. The silver-haired Inu-Youkai turned away and closed his eyes, wishing for the weeping illusion to disappear. Oh yes, he knew this was a dream. The real Kagome would never sob and wail so unabashedly, this he knew. Still, it hurt. He wished he could cheer Kagome up. But he was the last person Kagome wanted comforting from. He sighed.

“Cease your crying.” The crying girl vanished, and he was left alone again, nothing but darkness beyond the circle of light he stood in.

“Sesshoumaru, you arrogant bastard!!!” His heart froze as the gruff shout reached his ears. Eyes wide, he spun round and round, but couldn’t see anything but shadows. He tensed as he sensed a being approach from behind. “Heh.” He closed his eyes at the mirthless chuckle.

“Even in my dreams, you still exist to aggravate me, Inuyasha.” He turned around cooly, his face blank of all emotion.

“Yeah, yeah. Quit the insults, I’m here for better reasons. Wake up.”

“This Sesshoumaru will awaken when he sees fit. You may have ceased to exist in the land of the living, but you still have no right to--”

“Just zip it, will ya?! Look at what you’ve done!” The Hanyou pointed to something behind him. Arching a brow, Sesshoumaru turned to look, but froze.

A window of some sort was suspended in midair, looking into a room. His heart skipped a beat as he realized it was looking into his bedroom chambers from his balcony. There he lay, asleep, a weeping Kagome by his side. Wait, weeping? He turned back to Inuyasha.

“I tire of these illusions. Haunt my dreams another night.” He frowned as a growling Inuyasha came at him. He was seized by the collar of his haori, an angry Hanyou in his face.

“You damn asshole! This ain’t no dream!” Inuyasha pulled an arm back, then landed his fist in Sesshoumaru’s jaw. “Just fuckin’ watch already!” He jerked Sesshoumaru in the direction where the window had had been. Utterly shocked, Sesshoumaru allowed himself to be ordered around, and let his eyes fall on the image he thought had been an illusion.

Kagome was in the red kimono she’d been wearing earlier and was crying silently. “Koi, you look so peaceful when you sleep." A sob. "I’m sorry for everything, Sesshoumaru. If I had known that you would regret mating me, I would have never accepted. Even if it meant losing you, I would never force you to return my love, nor mate a mortal. But you were always so honorable, always true to your word.” She paused. “Inu-Youkai mate for life. However, if their mate were to die, they would be allowed to take another. Strange... When I first heard of this, it frightened me. I feared that after my death, you would find another. But now, these words bring comfort to me. Now I know that you’ll find happiness after I’m gone. Sesshoumaru, please forgive me.” Her head dropped, hiding her face from view. “Sesshoumaru,” she looked up, tears spilling down her face, a painful smile upon her lips, “you may not have been my first love, but you were my first true love. The one I willingly gave heart, body, and soul to.” She bent down to place a kiss on his lips.

The Sesshoumaru that was watching all of this felt a tingling in his lips, eyes widening as he realized it felt like a kiss. His body felt numb as her words registered meaning. He watched in horror as she pulled a dagger from beneath the futon and pointed it at her heart. He tore himself away from Inuyasha and roared into the darkness.

“NOOOOOOOOO!!!” Sesshoumaru bolted up, a sheen of cold sweat covering his shaking body. His eyes darted beside him, only to widen inexpressibly as his gaze fell on a pale Kagome, dagger embedded in her chest. He put an ear to her heart; only to hear no pulse, placed a cheek to her lips; only to feel cold skin and no warm breath. Looking up at the blurry moon through hot tears, he howled his pain.

Silent sobs wracked through his body as he gathered his lifeless mate into his lap gently. He buried his face into her throat and cried hot, burning tears into her skin. He sensed others approaching, probably to answer the grief-filled howl he’d let loose. He threw up a barrier of his Youkai and clutched Kagome’s body tighter. He barely registered the shouts that came from beyond his barrier, hardly noticed the spells that were cast to try and dissolve his shield... He focused on Kagome, only on Kagome. He brushed her hair away from her face, wiped away the tears that stained her face; both his and hers. He stroked her lips gently, remembering the kisses they’d shared. He traced her cheekbone tenderly with a thumb, then cupped her cheek gently with his hand as he placed a soft kiss on her cool lips. He stared listlessly at the dagger, closing his eyes for a moment as he steeled himself for what he was about tot do. Gripping the hilt of the dagger, he took a deep breath--

Only to go flying across the room. His head snapped up when recovered from the impact, but he quickly lifted an arm to shield his eyes as a blinding white light filled the room. Peeking through his eyelashes, he distinguished Kagome’s body. From what he could tell, she was floating in the air, her head, arms, and legs hanging limply. He could still discern the shape of the dagger rooted in her chest. He tried to get up, only to feel something pushing him back down. An unfamiliar aura was pressing against him, forcing him to stay still. From what he could tell, it was miko, but not Kagome’s. He allowed his Youkai to surge, and rose slowly. He took a struggling step forward, roaring Kagome’s name.

Kagome’s mouth hung open, eyes huge as the figure stepped closer. She dropped to her knees and hung her head.

“Rise.” Kagome looked up meekly, then did as told. “Don’t bow down to me so, child.” Kagome nodded, and studied the woman from beneath her eyelashes. Pristine white haori and hakama, polished breastplate armor, sword at hip, straight, jet-black hair, and small, feminine boots. The thought that this woman and Sesshoumaru dressed alike briefly crossed her mind before she looked directly into the woman’s face.

Smooth, perfect skin, pale pink lips much like her own, and beautiful eyes framed by thick lashes. But it was her eyes themselves that caught her off guard. Twin pools of milky liquid silver.

“Midoriko-sama...” Kagome clenched her fists at her side, horribly embarrassed.

“Yes, that is who I am. But are you Kagome Higurashi?” Kagome nodded silently, too stunned. Talking to the most powerful Miko in history as well as the strongest female warrior to exist was certainly very nerve-wracking.

“Your demeanor is flattering, but unnecessary.” Kagome’s jaw dropped.

“Unnecessary? Unnecessary? You, Midoriko, are the most powerful miko in history. You are the greatest female warrior to ever set foot on this earth. You have slain countless evil beings, be they demons or humans. Your tale is one so great it is famous even in my time! And I, a mere untrained miko from the future need not show you the honor and respect you deserve?!” Breathing heavily from her animated speech, her eyes widened as the silver-eyed woman began to laugh.

Sesshoumaru pushed forward with all his might, forcing his feet to move against the resisting aura. After what seemed like hours, he came to the hovering body of his lifeless mate. Taking her body into his arms, he held her against him, fighting against the aura that tried to repel him. His eyes were mere slits, trying to block out the intense light that radiated from her warm body. He did a mental double-take. Warm? Yes, her skin was warm. Hopes lifting, he held her tighter, tears leaking from beneath closed eyelids.

“Aha! This is the Kagome Higurashi that I have heard about! A woman with a spirit so fiery that grown men shiver in their shoes, a heart and soul so vast and pure that even the most evil of men will experience your kindness before your wrath, and a most forgiving nature that not even those who have wronged you most brutally will not be begrudged by you.” She chuckled softly a bit, shaking her head. "Ah, but maybe I am going too far into the future; your tale has not yet gained such length." Kagome drew back, hand covering her mouth.

“What?!” She whispered, not bothering to hide the shock in her voice. Midoriko continued obliviously, ignoring the awe-filled question.

“And what’s this about an untrained miko?! Do you know not the extent of your strength? Your power surpasses even my own, Kagome. Your time spent on the mainland [China] has dampened your senses, caused your miko to go dormant, but the prowess you possess is immeasurable. Do you not understand?” She took Kagome’s hand into her own. “You have been through so much. Both physically and emotionally. But the wounds to your body are nothing compared the pain in your heart and soul. While you collected the jewel shard with your friends, you suffered from constant heartbreak. From Inuyasha and from all the experiences of the people you met and helped. And even when the jewel was completed, you gave up your chance at happiness to make another happy. You lived through the deaths of all your closest friends, taught yourself to survive in the wild. Then, you saved a woman and traveled to the mainland on a whim; all to prevent something that would later become a tragic tale. And here you are now, finally enjoying your chance at happiness... But instead you choose to take your life, and all over a simple misunderstanding.” Kagome’s gaze fell as her heart began to twinge with renewed pain.

“What have I misunderstood? He regrets our mating.” Her voice was soft, but measured and deliberate. “How would he have been able to move on with his life if he had an unwanted mate to--” She was cut off by Midoriko, who took her by the shoulders.

“Still your lips! Do you put no faith in his love for you?! Do you turn a blind eye on the love you two share?! Do you not love him?!” Kagome thought back to the morning after she and Sesshoumaru's mating. She had awoken alone, her mate long gone. She could sense his aura, even from this great distance. His aura was heavy with rage and regret and she sank into herself at its intensity. Her greatest fears had been confirmed, he had regretted their mating. Yet even after all that, Kagome knew better. She loved him, with every ounce of her soul.

“Of course I love him!” Midoriko smiled, her hold going slack.

“Then go to him.” She pulled Kagome into a hug, caressing her inky locks comfortingly. “He is waiting for you, Kagome.” Minutes passed before the blue-eyed miko nodded against the other woman’s shoulder.

“Thank you, Midoriko-sama... Will Will we...?”

“Our paths will cross more than just this once.” She pulled back a little to look the younger woman in the eye. Kagome looked into those swirling silvery depths, and felt something within her stir. “Kagome, your life is not yet to end. Remember, yours is a deeper destiny.”

-End Chapter-

A/N: Ohh yes. How’s that for an ending to my T W E N T Y S E C O N D chapter?! So, you like? Is it good? Bad? Could be better? And finally.. the title comes into play. Are you surprised? Most of you thought it would be Inuyasha, not Midoriko. But don't worry, Inuyasha will be back, just not in the land of the living. And in case you all forgot, before the final battle, Midoriko visited Kagome and allowed her to 'feel' the future. I believe it was mentioned in chapter 3.

I'd like to take this moment to be very random. I'd like to share with you all that yes, school has started for me and that I am very excited because I am finally taking Japanese 1. I'm kinda mad though, cuz I already taught myself some of what we're being taught. We're doing introductions and things now, not bad i guess. My teacher gave me my Japanese name which is pronounced Ah-nn-jya-reen. And I learned how to write it in katakana. I sooo prefer kanji though!

Hajime mashite! Watashi wa Angeline desu. Douzo yoroshiku. (bows ^.^)

A/N Edit 8.12.07: Hello everyone. I'm about to enter my second full week of school, and I am already exhausted. There will be blood, sweat, and tears this year; and lots of it. I have two AP exams to take by the end of this year, as well as SATs and ACTs and whatever. I have to start my scholarship and college applications very soon and my current workload is unforgiving. So yes, the updates will be slow, but please bear with me. Many of you have expressed interest in how I've been. I've been good I guess, just a little stressed. The bf and I have been verrrryy good, and I just love my Japanese class. Our current project is to create 10 manga strips using the phrases we've learned so far. I, of course, have Sess/Kag centered comics. Honors Trig, AP English and AP U.S. World history will definitely add more white hair to my head; but I'm dealing with evrything the best way I can.The heat down here in Hawaii is unbearable right now.. but I guess it's worse on the mainland. Otherwise, life has been good, and hopefully, getting better. Love you all! Jaa!
oldestmaiden: I know, I know.. I hated chapter 21 too, but that was how this story all started. In fact, that was how I got the title for this fic. The night before I went to go see Curse of the Golden Flower, I had a dream where Kags and Sessh were mated, but has misunderstanding, thus leading to Kagome committing suicide to free Sesshoumaru from what she believed was his unwanted mate. Then of course, after watching the movie, I just had to toss in the parts where Kags ends up in China. I know chapter 21 wasn't enjoyable at all, but it was necessary. Hopefully this chapter was more to your liking. Thanks for the review.

Nyuka: Damn, you can't find Shinjitsu no Uta? I'm pretty sure you can find the music video or even an AMV of it on youtube.. I'm sorry to say that you weren't right about Inuyasha, but that's okay, nobody saw Midoriko coming. (I think?) Gosh, you must hink I'm so evil. But I love angst, remember? Hopefully this chapter will cheer you up and yes, chapter 23 is underway!

Miss Mischief: Yes, teishou does love angst. ^_____^ I think chapter 21 was the most angsty, although SesshyLove does get all emotional in this chapter and the next. I'm glad you liked the song and saw the connection. When I first started planning for this fic, Shinjitsu no Uta was the song I wanted to base everything upon. It wasn't the first song to be put into the story, but it was the first song I chose. If you read my response to oldestmaiden, I would say I only dreamt that dream because I had Shinjitsu no Uta on repeat, hehehhe. >_< But then again, maybe it was all those chocolate-covered pretzels..? ^.^ Nummy. Your review was deeply appreciated, hopefully this chap repays the favor.

half demon cat kagome: I hate misunderstandings. But it's strange how our lives seem to be filled with them. And these misunderstandings usually begin with miscommunication, or in some cases, lack of thereof. I lilke your idea of Sango and the others coming back to talk some sense into Kagome. I may just use that later on.. Well, You know now that it wasn't Inuyasha or Sesshoumaru that brought Kagome back.. but your other predictions and musings are..hmm, in depth? I love how you really think things through. As for a baby, yes there will be... but you'll have to wait to find out when. I hope your first day will be great too! I was kinda disappointed with my schedule though.. I have trigonometry first thing in the morning!! Yechh!! My schedule was totally messed up because i was pulled out of AP bio, so i ended up with food service for second period, but i've just changed it to school service; gonna be a teacher's aide. I won't get any credit, but it'll pretty much be a free perod for me. I have this dang AP english and history dual class for third period, and my gosh my two teachers will definitely give me lots of white hair. (I have one already!!! T_T) Fourth period is fun; Japanese. ^_______^ Hope you and your schedule get along, mine bit me.

Chase65: YES! You don't hate me!! My dear, your review has thoroughly embarrassed me. I am sooooo very happy that you see it as a real story with a REAL plot, and that you do appreciate my details and music. I love being able to visulaize things, and you have to admit, that dang jMusic is so dang addicting. Yes, Sesshy and Kags can be extremely frustrating as a couple, but that is one aspect of why their so good together. You're right about Inuyasha, he'll be good and supportive, not all 'I'm-gonna-steal-your-mate.' And don't you love Shinjitsu no Uta? I just love Tomiko Van's voice; so haunting... Thank you very much for the review; it was thoroughly heartfelt.
