When Kagome got to the small shrine, she went in, closed the door behind her and leaped over the side of the well. She felt like she was going through water, even though she was in a well that had been dry for centuries. In a flash of bright blue light, Kagome was at the bottom of the well.
“Made it. Now to get out of here,” she said to herself. She took hold of the clump of vines that climbed up the inside of the well and made her way up. Because of all the practice she had gotten in the previous years, she made it out quickly.
She swung both legs over the side of the well and stood up on the soft grass, bathed in the sunlight. She looked around, but couldn't see Sesshomaru or the others anywhere.
“Where is everyone?” she wondered aloud.
It wasn't long before she heard a little girl's voice call out from behind her. “Kagome, you're back!” Kagome turned and smiled when she saw who it was that called her. It was Rin, a young girl who had lost her life and got revived by Sesshomaru's sword, the Tenseiga, which had the ability to save 100 lives with one stroke. Rin ran up to Kagome and hugged her tightly, tears in her eyes. Kagome frowned at the sight of them.
“Rin, what's wrong? Where's Sesshomaru? And Jaken and Ah-Un?” she questioned worriedly. Rin let go of Kagome and pointed to a group of trees to Kagome's right-hand side.
“They're fighting a powerful demon! It's too strong for them, Kagome! They need your help!” Kagome nodded, a determined expression on her face.
“Of course I'll help them. But I need my bow and arrows,” she said. Rin made a small sound.
“Um, I'm sorry… I think I dropped them before I came here to get you, Kagome-san,” she said shamefully, her head bowed.
Kagome shook her head.
“It's okay, Rin. Just take me there.” Rin nodded and ran to the forest, Kagome following close behind her.
Ten minutes later, Kagome and Rin arrived in a large grove of trees where a particularly large weasel demon was snapping at the demon known as Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru looked like he was as big as a squirrel compared to the weasel demon. He leaped around on the demon's body, his eyes narrowed in concentration, searching for a weak spot. He saw an ideal spot on back of the demon's neck and let out a battle cry, skillfully twirling his sword in his hand before plunging it into the demon's flesh. The weasel demon roared loudly and thrashed around, trying to get Sesshomaru off of its back. Sesshomaru clenched both hands tightly around the hilt of the Tokijin, doing his best to hold his balance. Sesshomaru's servant, a little imp called Jaken, gazed at the event in horror.
“Lord Sesshomaru!” he shouted, concerned for his master's safety.
Sesshomaru glared down at Jaken and ordered, “Jaken, distract the demon! I shall handle the rest!”
Jaken nodded and he ran around the demon, shooting flames at it from his Staff of Two Heads, trying to divert the beast's attention from Sesshomaru. Rin was just as worried as Jaken was and called Ah-Un, her dragon.
“Please, Ah-Un take me up!” she requested. Ah-Un bellowed low in its throats (Ah-Un was a two-headed dragon) as a sign of agreement and crouched down just enough for the girl to climb on. Rin removed the muzzles from Ah-Un's snouts, got onto the dragon's back and held onto the mane of hair on the back of the dragon's two necks as it flew through the air.
“Now, Ah-Un! Help Lord Sesshomaru!” she instructed. Ah-Un roared and shot an electrical wave out of its two mouths at the weasel demon. The attack hit the demon in the stomach, electricuting it and causing it to shriek painfully and stop thrashing around. Thanks to Sesshomaru's sword, the powerful shock of electricity was absorbed into the blade, leaving him unharmed. However, he was beginning to lose his footing.
Kagome looked up at him worriedly, searching the area frantically for her bow and arrows. She finally spotted them at the base of a nearby tree and ran over to them. She picked up the bow and an arrow and nocked it to the string, holding it at the ready, a determined expression on her face as she aimed at the demon's heart.
“Sesshomaru!” she cried, releasing the bowstring and shooting the arrow. A strong spiritual energy erupted from the arrowhead and surrounded the entire arrow.
Sesshomaru looked towards the ground when he heard Kagome's voice and smiled when he saw her with her bow raised. She has returned. He removed his sword from the weasel demon and jumped off of its back, doing a backflip in midair and landing beside Kagome. He looked at her, a small smile on his face.
“Just on time,” he said, looking back at the weasel demon. Kagome blushed and nodded.
“Yeah, I just got back. Still, I wasn't expecting to have to battle a demon on my birthday,” she admitted.
Kagome's arrow struck the weasel demon right in the heart; it resulted in a high-pitched roar from it when the spiritual energy surrounding the arrow began to burn it from the inside. Within minutes, the demon blew apart into several pieces, destroyed.
Rin cheered from her perch on Ah-Un's back, thirty feet in the air. She brought Ah-Un down for a landing in front of Sesshomaru and Kagome, hopping off of its back and smiling happily.
“You did it, Kagome-san! You were great!” she exclaimed, admiration in her big brown eyes. Kagome giggled.
“It was nothing really. If it weren't for you and Ah-Un, Rin, I wouldn't have been able to hit the demon in the right spot,” she stated. Rin's cheeks flushed.
“I'm just glad I could help,” she said bashfully. Sesshomaru chuckled and slid the Tokijin back into his sash, gazing down at Rin.
“I was beginning to lose my grip on the Tokijin when the demon was thrashing about, so if you hadn't lent your assistance, I would've fallen off and dropped my weapon. So well done, Rin,” he congratulated, bending over a bit and placing a hand on Rin's shoulder. Rin giggled and smiled at the demon lord.
“Thank you, my Lord.” Kagome looked around, realizing it was unnaturally quiet. She almost immediately realized what was missing.
“Hey, where's Jaken?” she asked Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru sighed and called out, “Jaken, come here.”
It was then that a part of the weasel demon's remains shuddered and Jaken popped out from underneath it, gasping for air. He found it hard to breathe under the deceased demon.
“Y-yes m'lord?” he questioned, staggering over to Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru rolled his eyes, glaring at the imp.
“You did not obey my orders to distract the demon, Jaken… Because of that, we almost failed in destroying it,” he scolded, a cold expression in his eyes. Small beads of sweat rolled down Jaken's face at the severity of the tone Sesshomaru's voice took on. Jaken threw the Staff of Two Heads to the ground and got onto all fours, bowing so low the tip of his nose touched the grass.
“F-forgive me, m'lord! I tried but could not bring its attention to me for very long before it began thrashing about again!” he explained desperately, his eyes closed tightly as he awaited his punishment.
“I will forgive you for the time being, for I am in no mood to deal with you right now. But be warned, Jaken… Should it happen again, I will have to kill you…” threatened Sesshomaru. Jaken nodded understandingly.
“Y-yes, my Lord…” he stuttered fearfully picking up his staff and getting to his feet. But he didn't stay in a standing position for long before Sesshomaru stepped on him as he made his way through the clearing. Jaken was then stepped on by Rin and cried out in pain. Much to the little imp's relief, Ah-Un did not step on him. He was grateful for that, because had Ah-Un stepped on him he would've been squashed as flat as a pancake. Weakly standing up again, he followed behind his master, his head hung low.
