A Forgotten Love
Kirameki Izumi
(Continuation of "Kagome's Life Endangered" and "Dansu")
"How dare he?" Kikyo was walking by a babbling brook. The night was bathed in moonlight and the stream was gurgling happily as she sat and fumed.
"How dare he threaten me?" Kikyo could still feel Inuyasha's harsh words burn horribly in her chest. "If you ever try to harm Kagome again, I swear, I'll kill you." She could feel hatred and anger moving through out her body. It burned within her like an unquenchable fire.
"You will suffer yet Inuyasha. You will regret the day you ever let that girl into your heart."
It was a beautiful, quiet day. The kind that feels like it will never end, and the kind that you would be very disappointed to have end. That is until…
"Sit!!" There was a great crashing noise as Kagome's sit command caused another crater in the earth with Inuyasha.
"Your so infuriating!" Kagome yelled in frustration.
"Damn! What in the Hell did you do that for?" Inuyasha yelled angrily as his head popped up from the crater.
"Humph!" Kagome turned away angrily and walked on ahead, leaving Inuyasha to pull himself out of the new made hole.
"Damn it." He said quietly to himself. "She's always so touchy."
"Well how do you expect her to react when you're being so controlling?" Miroku said with a tinge of weariness in his voice.
"I'm just trying to protect her!" Miroku looked at Inuyasha skeptically.
"I'm not jealous!"
"I didn't say anything."
"You're thinking it! Besides, how do we know this guy is trustworthy anyway?"
"I told you already! Hojo isn't like that!" Kagome yelled angrily behind her.
"Just drop it." Miroku said as Inuyasha opened his mouth to answer in protest. "Just give her some time to cool down and if you're lucky, she'll forgive you for your trespass."
"I didn't do anything!" However, Miroku was just walking on and ignoring him.
"Hey! I'm still talking here!" Inuyasha yelled angrily after him.
"He'll never learn." Miroku thought as he shook his head. Kagome suddenly stopped in her heated tracks.
"What's wrong Kagome?" Sango asked in curiosity.
"I sense a sacred jewel shard. It's that way!" Kagome then pointed eastward from where they were standing. Miroku and Inuyasha ran ahead while Sango, Shippo, and Kagome jumped onto Kirara.
"How close are we to the jewel?" Inuyasha yelled behind him.
"It's only a few yards ahead of us!"
"Alright!"
Kagome was correct. After a few moments, they had spotted it. A large, white, dragon-like demon with glowing red eyes turned and looked in their direction as they approached. Kagome looked up at the beast and searched for the sacred jewel.
"The sacred jewel is in its forehead!" Inuyasha quickly pulled out his Tetsusiaga and aimed for the dragon's forehead.
"Wind Scar!" But the dragon leapt up and out of the way just in the nick of time.
"Oh no you don't!" The dragon was now gliding away through the air, trying to make its escape. But Inuyasha was to quick for it. He aimed his sword towards the sky as he once again released the Wind Scar. There was no escape. The white dragon was soon engulfed in the bright light of the Wind Scar.
"Keh! Pathetic." The Tetsusiaga transformed back into its usual rusty form as Inuyasha placed it back in its sheathe. But as Inuyasha turned to walk away, he stopped suddenly and stared up at the sky.
"Soul Collectors?" Kagome said in surprise. It was true. The dragon had disappeared but now there were hundreds of Soul Collectors in its place.
"The Soul Collectors must have fused together to form the image of a dragon." Miroku said thoughtfully.
"But… but why?" Kagome thought in puzzlement.
"Does…does that mean Kikyo's near by?" Inuyasha thought as he stared transfixed at the sky. Kagome walked slowly up to Inuyasha's side and looked more closely at his face. "He's thinking of Kikyo."
It bothered her whenever he had that far off look in his eyes. It meant that his thoughts were only filled with Kikyo. She couldn't stand it. She had to look away. As Kagome turned away she gasped in shock. Kikyo was standing right behind her.
"Ki…Kikyo!"
"Kikyo?" Inuyasha turned and looked in the direction where Kagome was looking and frowned in puzzlement. He then looked at Kagome in concern. "Kagome I don't see Kikyo anywhere."
" What are you talking about? She's right there!" She pointed to the spot where Kikyo was standing. Inuyasha's expression remained unchanged. He just kept staring at Kagome in puzzlement and concern.
"Don't you see her?" Kagome said frantically turning to the others. They all shook their heads.
"It doesn't matter what you say or do. They can not see me." Kagome turned to look at Kikyo. Kagome began to tremble in fear. Why couldn't they see her?
"I used a spell to make myself unseen. I suppose it is because you are my reincarnation that you can see me. But either way, it does not matter." Kikyo pulled out an arrow and raised it to her bow.
"She's going kill me!" Kagome thought in panic "She's going to try and kill me again!" But Kikyo was not aiming her arrow at Kagome. She was aiming at Inuyasha! Horror struck Kagome like hard iron as she realized what Kikyo was planning to do. "Inuyasha!" Kikyo had released the arrow and it was now hurtling straight towards Inuyasha's heart. Kagome did the only thing she could think of. She ran and hugged Inuyasha and guarded his heart with her own body. Immediately after, Kagome felt the sharp arrow pierce through her body as if it were made of nothing but butter. She could feel a bitter cold seeping through her as if she were turning to ice.
Inuyasha stared down in horror as he saw the now visible arrow protruding from Kagome's back.
"Kagome." Inuyasha chocked quietly as the horrible truth reared its ugly head. Kagome looked up at Inuyasha and gave him a weak smile.
"Thank goodness. You're alright." Kagome said in nothing more than a whisper as her eyes began to close.
"Kagome? Kagome!" Kagome had fallen unconscious and was now falling to the ground. Inuyasha caught her in his arms and held her close. The arrow had vanished, leaving only the wound as a reminder. Why hadn't he listened to her? He could feel regret eating away at his heart. His eyes were beginning to sting as they tried to hold back unwanted tears. Inuyasha transferred his grieving and regret into anger as he carefully sat Kagome on the ground and looked up to see Kikyo. She had finally allowed herself to become visible.
"Damn you. You'll pay for this."
"The girl chose her death. Do not blame me for her foolishness."
"You knew she would jump in the way!"
The others were staring in surprise and awe at the scene before them. The unconscious Kagome, the wrathful Inuyasha, and the indifferent Kikyo who seemed to have appeared out of no-where. They weren't sure what to do or say. It had all happened so suddenly.
"It doesn't matter. I'll make you regret what you did." Inuyasha's hand flew to his Tetsusiaga but Kikyo vanished in an instant. All that was left of Kikyo was her dying voice.
"Do not fret Inuyasha. I will not let her die yet. You still have much more suffering to endure." And with that, Kikyo disappeared with out a trace.
"Damn it! She got away!" Inuyasha's expression softened as he turned to Kagome's still figure. He walked slowly towards her and gently lifted up her limp body into his arms.
"Come on. We have to take Kagome back to Kaede's village."
"Will Kagome be alright Grandma Kaede?" Shippo asked with concern and worry in his quivering voice.
"I'm not sure." Kaede wringed a washcloth over a small tub of water and placed it on Kagome's forehead. She had received a terribly high fever from the wound.
"It's strange. Usually the entire sacred arrow disappears. But this arrow's head was left behind and is now burrowing deeper into Kagome's heart."
"Can't you get it out?"
" The arrow head has placed up a strong barrier. Only the powers of Kikyo's or Kagome's sacred arrow could dissolve the barrier."
"But wasn't Kagome shot by a sacred arrow?"
"No. This is not a sacred arrow. The arrowhead has been dipped in a nightshade potion and has had an extremely evil and hateful spell placed upon it. We will just have to hope that Kagome's strength will endure."
Outside, sitting on the roof, was the worried Inuyasha. His leg was tapping in anxious, worried anticipation. "Please be alright Kagome." However, Inuyasha's thoughts were interrupted by Kagome's screams. Inuyasha jumped in horror and ran to the sound of Kagome's piercing screams. She was still screaming and thrashing in her sleep when he got there.
"What happened?"
" I don't know. Shippo said in a shaky voice. "She just started screaming." Kaede was gone to fetch fresh water and Shippo looked extremely lost on what to do.
"No! No! Please! Stop! Inuyasha! Help!" Kagome was now screaming at the top of her lungs and was thrashing so wildly that she was endangering herself to injury. Inuyasha hurried to her side in fear that she would do just that.
"Kagome! Stop it!" Inuyasha grabbed Kagome and gently shook her. Kagome stopped screaming, she was still breathing fast, but her breathing slowed down and she slipped back into peaceful slumber. Inuyasha gave a great sigh of relief as he placed his hand on her forehead to check her temperature. "What the Hell?" Kagome had been burning up not a few minutes ago, but now she felt perfectly normal. Was his desire for Kagome's recovery clouding his senses?
"Don you think Kagome will be alright now?" Shippo asked in a voice barely above a whisper.
" I hope so Shippo. I hope so." Inuyasha said this last sentence almost more to himself than to Shippo.
"I'm not sure. We can't be certain the spell has been completely lifted." Kaede had returned and Shippo was fretfully sleeping in the corner of the hut as Inuyasha explained the strange drop in Kagome's fever to Kaede.
"I see." Inuyasha sat and pondered Kaede's words for a moment, nodded as if confirming a decision, and then got up, and walked over to the sleeping Kagome. He picked up the bottle of jewel shards that were lying next to Kagome and placed them in his kimono. He then carefully picked up Kagome and started for the door.
"What are you planning to do?"
"I'm taking Kagome back to her own world."
"Then why take her jewel shards?" though Kaede already knew the answer.
"Because…because I don't think she should come back. I'm not risking her life again." Kaede nodded in understanding.
"When Miroku and Sango come back I'll take the medicinal herbs they found to Kagome. I don't know how much they'll help but…" and he walked out the door.
It didn't take him long to get to Kagome's house. Inuyasha sat Kagome on her bed and pulled the covers over her. She was sleeping with a peaceful smile on her face now. Inuyasha gently brushed the hair from her eyes as he stared at her face for a moment. She even looked beautiful in her sleep. Inuyasha bent down and pressed a fervent kiss on her forehead and then slipped silently out of the window.
"Is that everything then?" Inuyasha was putting the last of the medicinal herbs into a basket.
"That's all of them." Sango said as she checked in the cloth they had carried them in.
"Are you sure about this?" Miroku asked with uncertainty on whether he should have even asked.
"About what?"
"Well, the last time you used this method to protect Kagome it didn't exactly work."
"Then what do you suggest I do?" he said in a slightly irritated voice.
"I don't know." Miroku sighed.
"Well, see ya." and Inuyasha turned and walked out of the hut.
Inuyasha was traveling through the well, experiencing the usual hanging-in-midair feeling before his bare feet touched the cool earth at the bottom of the well. Inuyasha then jumped out of the well and was just walking towards the shrine when he saw Kagome.
"I'm off!" "Is she going to school? She shouldn't be going to school in her condition. I better check and make sure she's alright." So Inuyasha followed after Kagome as silent as a shadow along the rooftops
Inuyasha spent most of the day waiting on the school's roof until it finally ended. Kagome was just walking out of her P.E. class when Inuyasha finally decided that it was now safe to talk to Kagome. "I'm going to give her a piece of my mind. What's she thinking running around like this when she should be resting?"
"See ya!" Kagome yelled behind her as her friends started to make their way home. Suddenly Kagome felt a hand grabbing her arm
"You shouldn't be walking around you know, you just got better don't push yourself." But before Inuyasha could lecture Kagome any further, she started to scream.
"Let go of me you pervert!" and Kagome swung her bat at Inuyasha's head. Inuyasha ducked just as the bat was about to graze his ear.
"What in the Hell are you doing?"
"Keep away from me! Kagome yelled, holding the bat defensively as she backed away slowly.
"Kagome it's me! Your not mad at me or something are you?"
"Look! I don't know you are so just leave me alone!" Kagome turned and began to run.
"Kagome!"
"I said leave me alone!" Don't make me use this bat on your head!" Kagome yelled behind as she kept running in fear.
"Kagome." Did she really not remember who he was? And if so, why? Inuyasha began to feel a sharp, unmerciful pain begin to rise in his chest as if someone were poking and prodding his heart in mockery of his situation.
"I don't understand." Kagome was now in her school uniform and was half way home when strange thoughts began to pop into her head. "How did he know my name? And why am I getting a strange feeling that I really have met him before. No! No!" Kagome shook her head to try and clear away such silly thoughts but they were sticking in her head very stubbornly. "It can't be! That's impossible! Pull yourself together! He's just starting to get to you! But it's strange. Why does he seem so familiar?" Suddenly, what flashed in nothing more than a second before her eyes; was a picture of Inuyasha sitting comfortably on the limb of a towering tree looking up thoughtfully at the moon. His eyes then seemed to clear the pondering mist from with in them as if they had just realized there was someone else in the world other than himself. He then looked towards her and smiled at her in a warm, familiar way. And then it was gone. "Wait! What was that?” But Kagome's question was put on hold when she felt a strange presence coming from behind. Kagome slowly tuned around. Fear was washing over like an inescapable tidal wave as she saw a giant, white dragon flying swiftly towards her. Kagome stared in awe and horror as the dragon approached closer. She felt like she had seen it some where before but how was that possible? Nothing this strange had ever happened to her before, or had it? Kagome's body turned to lead. Her brain was telling her to run but her body would not heed her. Kagome just sat petrified as the great dragon opened its mouth to crush her body within its rows of razor sharp teeth. Kagome closed her eyes, waiting for the dragon's jaws to claim her life. Suddenly she heard the dragon scream in agony. She opened her eyes to see the dragon's blood oozing from a deep cut in its side. It was staring angrily at a figure standing in the distance. It was he, that unknown yet so familiar person who had been the subject of all her troubled thoughts.
“So you had this thing come and finish your dirty work for you, huh Kikyo? Well sorry to disappoint you but that's not gonna happen.” The strange boy then turned to Kagome with a look of concern.
“Are you alright Kagome?” Kagome stared back at him in surprise and puzzlement.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Keh!” Inuyasha ignored this comment and turned back towards the dragon.
“ Unfortunately for you, I'm not in a good mood today. I'll finish you off properly this time.”
“Why are you doing this? Why are you putting your life in danger for me?”
“You may not remember, but I once promised you that I would never leave your side, and I don't intend to break that promise now.” Inuyasha then pulled out the Tetsusiaga and aimed it at the injured dragon. There was a great wind swirling around it, as there had never been before. All of his anger towards Kikyo and what she was trying to do were being transmitting into what was becoming one of the most powerful Wind Scars ever seen.
“Prepare to die! Wind Scar!!” Inuyasha then jumped into the air so that the Wind Scar would aim straight for the dragon's heart. Time seemed to stand still as Kagome watched him. “Why is he doing this? Why is he protecting me?” The answer suddenly came as hundreds of memories rushed back to her. “I'm going to protect you! I don't care who it is! They're not getting away with it! You got that?” Along with all the memories, Kagome remembered that long forgotten name which was so fond to her.
“Inuyasha?” The arrowhead suddenly burst forth from Kagome's body and shattered into a million pieces and along with it the white dragon. The spell had finally lifted. Inuyasha sheathed the Tetsusiaga and walked towards Kagome.
“Are you okay?”
“I'm fine.” Kagome said as she began to shake. Her eyes began to well up with tears.
"Are you sure because…"
“I was so scared!” Kagome suddenly ran into Inuyasha's arms to seek shelter from the horrible experience she had just had.
“I was in the dark and so frightened! I heard your voice but I couldn't follow! I tried to remember but your face kept fading away! And you almost got killed because of me because I'm so stupid and weak!” Kagome began to shake violently as she sobbed even harder. Inuyasha smiled and hugged her tighter to him.
“No you're not stupid Kagome. And you're certainly not weak. You're the strongest person I know.” Kagome lifted her sobbing head from his chest as she looked up at him in puzzlement through her still blurry eyes. This was so out of his character.
“Let's go.” And they walked back to Kagome's house in silence with Kagome's head resting peacefully on Inuyasha's chest as he guided her back home. She finally felt safe. “I'm so glad I didn't forget you Inuyasha. Thank you for not forgetting me.”
